    I was a US Army brat living in South Korea in the late 70s and early 80s and we visited Japan a couple times. I remember being amazed by the lights of downtown Tokyo.

      @@user-sb1pl1ln6b "Army brat" is a term meaning I was the child of a parent in the military. So I was a child of around 7 years old and went to school at the Yongsan US military base. South Korea at the time was a developing county and I remember the Seoul Metro Green line was still under construction. So going to Japan which was in the middle of a economic boom was amazing.

    Even in 1980, Japan looked so futuristic. So competently and quietly advanced. So totally ahead of its time.

      Japan isn’t advanced they still use letters physical newspapers and fax I don’t see anything here that is more advanced than the U.S. It’s just a lot of lights and panels that were placed for an aesthetic look
      Also remembered this is restored footage that I doubt is from that time and was probably remade to look modern

      @@ohyaa1510 actually in 80s era, Japan was quite advanced since they undergo economic boom and having one of the highest GDP per capita, since then Japan had been stagnating until now

    I went to Japan as a 22 year old in march 1979. As an English man from rural Suffolk my six weeks there was a great education and I always have loved the whole place and people. I found a sense of peace and belonging and it has remained on all my other visits and always will.🇬🇧🇯🇵⛩🍣

    This is a hidden gem! I've never seen such a high quality video from 30+ years ago. It's interesting seeing Japanese life before their bubble economy collapse, and I feel like in today's world it'll be cool to see this era once again. I feel like add in today's technology and how they are more welcoming to the world, I can see so many people loving 1980s style Japan if it came back.
    Also I recognized a few scenes from Black Rain.

    Absolutely poetic! Blade Runner, 1982 portrayed Los Angeles as a futuristic cyberpunk city, but in fact this cyberpunk atmosphere was already a reality in Tokyo. Looking at the city from this perspective makes me feel good, and at the same time frightening.

    I was born in 1971. I spent the 80's from low teens to high teens. I was born in Tokyo and raised in Tokyo. There are many places I have never been to in this video. But it makes me feel nostalgic.

      Tokyo is a city where buildings are being rebuilt rapidly.
      More than half of the small wooden structures in this video probably don't exist.
      Especially after the economic recession around 1990, the speed at which old buildings disappeared accelerated.
      Japanese people tend to value old things, but in big cities like Tokyo, new things come in and old things disappear.

      @Allen S better is now? People are more isolated now. Less open than they were with one other back in the 80s. Yes even in Japan people were more open with one another, because they hasld to be, due to lack of mobile phones etc distracting them. Plus they had an economical boom, and good work flow, higher birth rates and stronger family connections. 80S = better.

    People from overseas deify Japan in the 80s, but there were many problems.
    School violence and juvenile crime were also major problems in the 80s.
    City pop music of the 80's was also minor in Japan at that time.
    It is certain that they were economically well-off.

    The 1980s is when technology started to explode and individualism really started to take off. Loneliness also started to become a problem during this time, even though people still socialized a lot without cell phones

    The presentation is so 80' that it has a lot of cuteness in it, but what intrigued me more is the actual daily life of 80' gen, some are reflected in this presentation but get overly shadowed by performed and acting

    My family moved to Nara in '89 when I was just a baby. I attended elementary school there, left after and moved back to attend high school in Osaka because of my parents decision. After high school, I moved to California to attend University and haven't left since, but I still visit my old friends from time to time. Good times

      I did that in the summer of 2003. There was internet, but I didn't have it in my pocket. The trains were a challenge. Signs often didn't have romaji.

    I was born in Boise Idaho in 1990 and have lived my entire life in Southern California.

      LOL. Interesting. I'm from Australia but lived in Tokyo for 8 years. Your instinct seems correct. Japan is one place that gets into your soul. It's deeply cultural and the people have wonderful respect for each other. There is not a foreigner I know that has spent time in Japan, and has left, and has not missed it.

      Кто потерял Японию? Россия, чьим челнокам стало выгодней везти некачественные подделки из Китая и Кореи? Так это проблема самих россиян. В развитых странах оригинальные качественные товары из Японии по-прежнему пользуются заслуженным спросом. От автомобилей до электроники. Хотя Китай и пытается сбивать цены в США с помощью своей сетью магазинов Walmart для бедных и непритязательных, не очень-то у них это получается. Не так просто корейцы сделали автомобильную эмблему Хундаи похожей на эмблему японской Хонды.

    タワーマンションという概念もなかったし、超高層ビルもわずかだった時代。
    国鉄、電電公社、共通一次という単語が存在した時代。
    大正生まれの人がまだ60代だった時代。
    新築のマンションに和室の部屋が必ず一つはあったような時代。
    割烹着が愛用され、肉屋では経木に肉を包んだ時代。
    こんな時代を愛したい。2023.2.15

      Cars from each era weren't all brand new, it's easy to forget that, and I notice that mistake in movies sometimes. Ironically the shot is almost certainly from a movie, as all the clips seem to be.
      The Nikon label has been around since 1946 though (the company itself started in 1917 apparently, with a slightly different name).

    It's clear that this is almost wholely not real candid footage. You just can't get candid footage like that except in quite rare circumstances.

      Siempre ha sido la tierra de la tecnologia las mejores camaras japon en los 80 y 90 fue pionera en todo luego ese puesto se lo fue quitando korea del sur al llevarse a sus mejores ingenieros a montar factorias alla samsung se construyo con ingenieros y gente de i mas d de sony y toshiba al menos su seccion de televisores,celulares y laptops
