The tectonic impact Björk had to electronic music with her 4 album streak of Debut, Post, Homogenic and Vespertine.
The maturation and sheer brilliance of Robyn's Honey.
The way SZA spoke to many millenials and Gen-Z with Ctrl.

The Velvet Rope was very groundbreaking when it was released in ‘97. It talked about domestic violence, depression, lack of self-worth, grief, black pride, BDSM, masturbation, and so much more. I was 13 at the time and my mother refused to buy me a copy of it and I was forbidden to listen to it. So once I turned 18, I listened to this masterpiece and I have been hooked on it ever since. TVR actually kept me from committing suicide. Thank you Janet.

The Velvet Rope is such a groundbreaking album and so many artists use this album as a guide for making dark and moody type albums and blend a little sexiness in it this album pave the way Janet Jackson knew what she was doing when creating this true masterpiece.

Picture this: It's 1997, I'm a 15yo kid obsessed with popular music. I go out and buy Jewel's album Pieces of You. Excited, I get home, put the CD in the stereo, press play, and expecting to hear some acoustic guitar, I instead hear this quiet voice: "Twisted elegance..." followed by distortion, some faint jazz piano chords, and a spoken word intro about the human need to feel special. The voice sounds familiar, but I'm certain it's not Jewel. When she says the words "the velvet rope," it clicks: that was the title of the new Janet album. The CD had been mislabelled; a factory misprint. I'm annoyed that I'll have to go all the way back to the store to return it. I keep listening though, and before long, that beat kicks in on the title track, and in that moment, I become a Janet fan for life.
I listened to it the whole way through. It was unlike anything I'd heard...daring, exciting, thrilling. So I listened again. Then again. And a thousand times more. I never returned the misprinted CD - I still have it today...along with the legit copy I eventually bought, along with every other Janet album, single and bootleg I could find.
There are only a handful of moments that, looking back on my life, I believe were not coincidence, that were destined to happen. And the way Velvet Rope found its way into my life and changed me forever, is one of those moments. It inspired me to self reflect and examine my own interior life, and nourished my emotional intelligence. It opened my mind and my heart, and gave me the eyes to see myself for what I was and what I will always be: a Work In Progress.

I don’t get how this woman only has 5 Grammys. The categories she has them in
Are bullsh**. How has she not won record, song, and album of the year? Control, RN1814. Janet, and the velvet rope are all album of the year worthy.. I don’t get the issue the Grammys have with Janet and Mariah 😭

    • @OGNeilNeilOrangePeel
      @OGNeilNeilOrangePeel ปีที่แล้ว +3

In the 80’s and 90’s the Grammy’s really were so white and the awards committees had a strong preference for singer songwriters who sat and played instruments over those that danced. Now I would say it’s virtually the reverse. Beyoncé might be good but there’s just no sane way she deserves more Grammy’s than Michael Jackson, Elvis, Queen, Janet, Tina Turner etc. I think if you added Janet’s, Tina’s and Whitney’s Grammys together you’d still have less than Beyonce

The year and month Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope album was released in stores
this was far the best album of Janet about gay pride, depression, failed relationships, self love and domestic abuse

The Velvet Rope, Butterfly, Ray of Light, & I want to add Whitney's My Love is Your Love especially since it inspired an entire greatest hits album of dance house mixes that elevated the Vocal house remix. It was the era of the Pop Diva for sure with so much genuine talent. These albums truly are conceptual works of art. These are the 4 horsewomen of the pop music apocalypse bc they created albums tgat were moments and movements that elevated Pop Music. The 90s was the era of the female singer songwriter with Lilith Fair that helped expose other great female artists.❤

Sadly the media blacklisting means that Gen Z mostly have no clue who Janet is or can name even a single song of hers, whereas for the most part they know Whitney & Madonna. It’s a great inequity and travesty. Janet’s music is so good, and her dancing is unparalleled.

Imo its her best work to date, the concept and production are on point. Smooth, vulnerable, kinda dark narrative and very bold for its time! And it aged soooo good

I like your in depth videos and commentary but I notice you tend to say things like “not a lot of people talk about” or “ not many people know” when referring to pop stars and certain events in their careers.
I feel like these comments reflect your age in that anyone who’s over 30 and have followed these legends know very well all of the things you’ve mentioned, these were pop culture moments that we grew up on.
Maybe for the new Gen Z”s who are just discovering these artists and their history that’s the case but it’s redundant and disingenuous to say those things, just my observation.

@@blameitoncapitalism todays current state of pop music & award shows are very boring & forgettable. Most rappers all sound the same just mumbling on a beat. A lot of the singers are bland and give lackluster performances. Nobody dances and gives memorable performances anymore for the most part
