I love that when the wife is holding her, Dakota spontanously and of her own will, climbs the most advanced obstacle! It surprises Victoria. When she feels confident, in safe loving hands she shows her intelligent, courageous and determined terrier mind!
Just goes to show that smacking dogs (or kids) is not the way to train them. It just shuts them down and makes them distrust you. They'll never do something you ask them to without second guessing it or being afraid to do it.
Victoria going "that's your fault not hers" is one of the only times she explicitly says that in any episode. I think it's a real indication if how serious she was about this dogs treatment. She has to stay professional and keep the owners on her side, so she doesn't usually say it so clearly. But in this situation, she's reminding everybody that she is in the dogs corner first and foremost.
I love that Victoria doesn’t hold back when telling him “the dog flinched when you told her to sit. She’s so used to you hitting her. she doesn’t listen but That’s YOUR fault, not hers.” Damn right! Sad how visibly stressed she was while training but only with dad. :(
Also the wife saying Dakota is “a bit of a stubborn dog and impulsive”. That is literally the tag line for all terriers everywhere...way to research your breeds before getting a dog.

I don't believe he has anger issues. I believe he took on a breed that was far more than he bargained for and became stressed and frusterated when it became out of hand and he didn't know how to control it any longer or how to properly interact with the dog. If he had anger issues, he wouldn't have made the progress he had so swiftly. Once Victoria taught him how to interact with their dog so he could manage and bond with her again, all the frustration washed away. You could see the genuine smile on his face at the first sign of the situation turning around for the better.
@@magickmiiror2853 A lot of people have done that and been stressed out and frustrated but not resorted to violence towards their dog. Stressed out doesn't mean you are violent. It's totally unnecessary in training a dog, it actually backfires. Training is about teaching not disciplining the dog.

People like that get obedient dogs out of making their dog fear them and then I question why people like that even wanted a dog in the first place...
@@xDarkTrinityx Exactly, especially as dogs by nature are such loyal and loving creatures but people just treat them like mindless animals to be beaten into submission, it's just cruel and unnecessary. Animals as a whole just need understanding of what makes them tick and a relationship built on common respect of boundaries on both sides, they might be 'just animals' as some say (not me, I prefer animals to people 😂) but even then they deserve boundaries and respect, so many people 'teach' their dogs to deal with children's antics by pulling their ears and tails etc as puppies but my question is why aren't they just teaching their child to respect the animals rather than teaching the animals to put up with daily torment and disrespect?
I loved that she was so happy at the agility training, because finally she had a friendly interaction and was praised. She is a pure and very lovely dog.
To those of you defending this man, this is exactly what anger issues look like. This is not frustration, or being overwhelmed. It's anger and lack of control.
Anger is a sign of fear, insecurity and could be from stress and tension from career to upkeeping a family. I can't blame someone with such issues, I can only empathize. I wonder why people on the internet like to present themselves as completely sinless and blemish free like they are some virtuous show off that can do no wrong. Don't judge people so quickly. Talk to more people and understand their problems. I think the dog to me is secondary and the family's best interest is a father that is less stressed out and that he and his family remain loving and united and healthy.

I can't imagine how that man disciplines his children based on how he tries to discipline his dog. The way people treat animals tends to so easily carry to how they treat people. I don't think I'll ever be able to trust someone who is mean or cruel to any animals.

I'd love to hear what Victoria has to say about Nikki and Dan Phillipi who put their dog down just recently because it was easier than training him over the last 9 years. He was the same breed as this dog and the owners just as negligent and irresponsible, honestly probably more so.
I was thinking the same thing especially when there is old videos of their bad behavior to react to such as the smaller dog being shoved in his face and grabbing on his face while eating. I have no respect for that couple and they don’t want to be held responsible.

Made me so sad watching how nervous Dakota was doing the agility course with the husband. My dad treated me similarly. It's hard to describe the sort of stress it causes when you're constantly punished just for being yourself. She's scared because she knows that whatever she does, he's going to see it as "wrong" in some way. She's preparing herself for the inevitable punishment but also clinging to a tiny bit of hope that she'll finally be "good enough". I'm sure this guy treats his kids exactly the same as he treats his dog, if not worse. My heart goes out to them.
Very few things I consider my dog does wrong. Lol. We want to keep her out of the muck pond and 2 areas in the yard. She is learning the no no and ehhh noise means I'm not pleased.
The kids are following the father’s actions and hitting her too. That poor dog has no one she can trust. I wish she could be rehomed, I don’t think he’ll ever change his ways. She needs love, and all the positive training! Thank you for making this public so the world can see how great positivity is with dog training. When he was takig her into the room with the ability course, he was pulling up on the leash and her front feet were barely on the floor. Im really upset that nobody really caught it, but im glad hes respecting her more now!
I honestly don't know how Victoria can stand there and watch the dad wack his dog over the head and not blow a fuse.. I would lose my mind! This man is insufferable, poor dog.
She's been dealing with people like that for a long time. She knows screaming in anger isn't in the best interest of the dog. I bet she was fuming on the inside though.
Because people jump right to being defensive, and shut down, quit listening, and quit cooperating. If you're after real results, you need to behave in the dog's interest, first, rather than your own.
I'm sure these people get an earful in someway or another. But you gotta be professional but ultimately you're there to help the dog and the owners establish a connection and a bond.
I feel like he can change. His laugh is genuine when he sees the dog going up the ramps and doing things of their own volition. It makes me believe that he never intended to truly mistreat the dog, but that his temper, coupled with not knowing how to properly train and deal with a dog, caused a buildup of stress and tension between him and the dog, and neither could work together very well. This all may be a game changer for him, and he obviously needs to get help with his anger issues. He's being held accountable for his actions, and he can admit that his actions have done damage- which is more than most. This doesn't excuse his actions, but it explains that he can change for the better. Nobody is ever permanently lost. The dog has started trusting him again, he realized he was wrong, and started to work with the dog, he even rides his bike with the dog- This is how humans can truly change for the better. This is how change works, and its so good, so good, that he's learned better.
Some guys just take it personal when a dog “doesn’t like them”. Dogs are great. They can roll with the punches and are such resilient loving creatures. Just have to try to be the dogs friend first and everything else tends to follow.
I also felt like the guy was frustrated and even disappointed in the dog. but he really came around after the clicker training and agility. Really lovely to see the change in him. He really turned it around 👍
I get how people can be angry with the husband, but I’d just like to say that I’m happy he has made such a huge turnaround in such a short amount of time. Good for him! And the family and the dog! Everyone hating on the husband, how about a bit of positive reinforcement (the point of the video) - well done for making the change! 👍🏼

To be fair the only way I see this problem fixed is if that friendly looking women divorces that toxic anger issues guy. I have a scale for things. You cant take care of a simple beginner friendly houseplant? Avoid pets. You cant take care of pets? Avoid children. I dont trust anyone not capable of raising a dog in a healthy manner to do any better with kids. I feel bad for that whole family.
My mom held me down like that as a kid as well. I can tell you will not calm down. Hugs make me nervous unless it's someone I have a really close bond with. So far I can hug only one person comfortably
She was getting excited about playing with a freakin broom. That’s such a great opportunity to train and teach how to play and when to stop etc. Every moment can be turned into a learning moment unless the owner is incapable of thinking critically.
there's a brief moment at 9:04 right after the scene transition where he lifts her a little too, it's very fast and subtle. no wonder she's doing terribly with him when that's his idea of direction. you can tell it's a habit of his he doesn't even think about to just 'carry' her by the neck.
I love seeing the positive change in people, especially in ones who were more on the aggressive side to being very kind and compassionate. It restores my faith in humanity
My first bull terrior was the best dog I ever had. Miss him so dearly everyday. He had cancer and past away in my arms. My boyfriend and I got recently a bull terrior puppy, he is 5 months old and training is going well. He is a happy puppy and I feel bull terriors are misunderstood. They are truely the best dogs with the correct training, lots of love and patience.
I would never be able to stand and watch this happen. Someone should treat him the way he treats Dakota and see how he likes being: Grabbed by the collar Pinned to the floor Smacked in the face
And dragged on the leash! Did you see that when they were about to do the agility training? He held the dog so high with the leash her feet weren't on the floor and was literally being dragged! He makes me sick. Throw the whole man away and keep the dog.

I don't know what I would do without him. He's truly my angel. He knows everything about me and comforts me when I'm not well (I have a chronic illness). How delightful that Joe did a complete 360 and was able to say Dakota was his buddy and really mean it. All dogs need training to be the best they can be and I’m glad they found out rewards and love was the better way to go.
Wow, she really did a good job of not making the dad feel like he was getting scolded or berated for hitting the dog. She instead phrased it in a way that was calm, logical, and didn't shame him. If she didn't do that I doubt he would have listen and his pride would have kicked in and told him she was just being too sensitive.

This is why it's so important to take dog training classes before getting a dog. So many owners go into it with all of these preconceived and incorrect beliefs and notions about dogs, how it should be, how to train them, and pretty much every problem they have with their dog stems from that. Learn about dog behavior, learn how to train and interact with your dog before they become a problem. Prevention is always better than reaction!
The dad reminds me of mine... and my parents were not just that way with the dogs. They were short tempered with my siblings and I as well. Wouldn't teach you how to do anything, but would punish you for not doing it right. In most cases with violence towards animals, (in my experience), the individual is also violent towards people. At least the guy in the show did try to change
There is a BIG difference between tapping and hitting. One way we trained my dogs was a two finger TAP on the snout. Only as hard as you tap your phone. We used it to let them know they were biting/eating something they weren't supposed to, and so now if you tap them on the snout they'll drop what they have in their mouth. They never flinch or get scared or act aggressively because it's not hurting them, it's not hitting them, that would just do the opposite of training

Indeed. I'm very happy to see that he is putting in some work, and making progress. Not just regarding Dakota's training, but his view on her. It's a very positive turnaround.
Having worked as a Veterinary technician for a decade, more importantly having owned an English Bull Terrier for about 15 years their work is cut out for them. Bull Terrier's are highly rewarding when properly trained and a nightmare if not. I loved mine more than any other dog I ever had, it was a sad time of my life when she passed away.

It just teach the child or the dog "if I do this they punish me" yes they maybe stop doing something but they will not understand why they need to stop! So it's not a good thing they will just make them scared of you, kids or animals!

I adore Victoria!!! She is not only dog trainer but a human trainer as well. The way talks and acts like a trainer is stinnunig! I love how she breaks down an idea to the owner to solve a problem.
I think sometimes people aren’t taught (as children) how to treat a dog properly and so they don’t know any better as adults, good on this guy for actually being open to learning, learning new things is never easy.
Joe's eyes were so angry at the beginning and his jaw clamped down. They were also squinted, another sign of anger. As the video progressed, his eyes started opening up more and brightening. That let me know that he wasn't just acting like he liked Dakota more - because his body language gave it away. That made me feel better because WOW, he was so angry at the beginning. It gives me hope that he actually stopped mistreating and abusing her.
This man thought it was acceptable to post the pup for sale without his wife's knowledge, less than 2 minutes into the episode and im already seeing red flags

Funnily enough he wanted a dog with a lot of energy.. 🤷♀️ this is the breed their "research" came up with. Even though a labrador also has a lot of energy, though it still needs basic training they are more known for being good beginner family pets over terrier types which have a pretty substantial prey drive as they're used to hunt small rodents and rabbits etc..
@@Kat-mu8wq well said! English Bull Terriers are not recommended as a breed suited to someone who has previously not owned a dog. Whilst they truly are a wonderful breed known as the “clown dog” they do require an experienced owner. Their stubbornness is too often mistaken for low intelligence. NOT TRUE. In the instance of this family I hope they continue with their progress, however if it all starts to revert back to how it had been then it would be best and kinder to rehome Dakota
@@Grintock a 1 year old child is not going to understand why it can't put the fork in the electric socket or drink the pretty blue liquid under the sink no matter how much you talk to them 🤨 they instuctually put things in their mouth to try and eat it because they are curious. That Doesn't mean dogs and human kids are exactly the same, just that there's usually a pattern with behavior like this.

Yes, My expressions of pure anger would instantly show. I wouldn't be able to control certain things with myself watching how he slapped her around and pretty much choked her while walking her around in the agility room.
We got a pitbull from the shelter years ago, he's gone now, wonderful dog, very sweet, but when we first got him I noticed he would tense when we reached out to pet him. It was heartbreaking, clearly someone had been hitting him, so sad because he was such a sweet boy

Bull Terriers need people who understand them. They are honestly not like ANY other breed. They need people contact and involvement and they love to be included in their humans' activities. They are highly affectionate and quite intense because they don't know they're not human. They need patience, firmness, games that challenge and entertain them and lots and lots of love. They're actually really intelligent but they are stubborn. They're not for everyone... if you want something that behaves like a labrador, don't get a bullterrier. I've had one from 8 weeks and another as a 3 year old rescue. They're phenomenal pooches 🙂
I actually struggled with my dog that had trust issues with me. I didn't really know how to handle it, coz praise didn't really work, joe did food or play, but Victorias videos helped me think a bit deeper inside a dog's head and I managed to fix the situation, by playing and praising his friends around him to show him "hey look everyone else is having a good time like this" and he just seemed to get it. It's like all the pressure on him just went away and he wanted to fit in with the rest of the dogs having fun. Like if I'd call him, he'd get skittish and leave, but then when I call him friends and they come, I praise and play with them and he would then feel more confident to approach. He was and still is friend motivated :) I also wanted to get rid of him because he drove me nuts as I had no idea what to do, but now he's my partner and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Victoria.
The awful situation with Nikki and Dan Phillipi made me think of this family. Same breed of dog with a family that WAS NOT prepared for a bull terrier. I know this channel doesn't really get involved with TH-camr issues but it would be interesting to hear Victoria's thoughts on the matter.

Animals as a whole just need understanding of what makes them tick and a relationship built on common respect of boundaries on both sides, they might be 'just animals' as some say (not me, I prefer animals to people 😂) but even then they deserve boundaries and respect, so many people 'teach' their dogs to deal with children's antics by pulling their ears and tails etc as puppies but my question is why aren't they just teaching their child to respect the animals rather than teaching the animals to put up with daily torment and disrespect?
I loved that she was so happy at the agility training, because finally she had a friendly interaction and was praised. She is a pure and very lovely dog.
To those of you defending this man, this is exactly what anger issues look like. This is not frustration, or being overwhelmed. It's anger and lack of control.
As a person who has autism and often gets overwhelmed, I would never ever think about hitting my dog
I show dominance to my dogs but he is for sure going too far because my dogs don’t act like his dog at all.
Anger is a sign of fear, insecurity and could be from stress and tension from career to upkeeping a family. I can't blame someone with such issues, I can only empathize.

Don't judge people so quickly. Talk to more people and understand their problems. I think the dog to me is secondary and the family's best interest is a father that is less stressed out and that he and his family remain loving and united and healthy.

I'd love to hear what Victoria has to say about Nikki and Dan Phillipi who put their dog down just recently because it was easier than training him over the last 9 years. He was the same breed as this dog and the owners just as negligent and irresponsible, honestly probably more so.

Made me so sad watching how nervous Dakota was doing the agility course with the husband. My dad treated me similarly. It's hard to describe the sort of stress it causes when you're constantly punished just for being yourself. She's scared because she knows that whatever she does, he's going to see it as "wrong" in some way. She's preparing herself for the inevitable punishment but also clinging to a tiny bit of hope that she'll finally be "good enough". I'm sure this guy treats his kids exactly the same as he treats his dog, if not worse. My heart goes out to them.

Very few things I consider my dog does wrong. Lol. We want to keep her out of the muck pond and 2 areas in the yard. She is learning the no no and ehhh noise means I'm not pleased.
The kids are following the father’s actions and hitting her too. That poor dog has no one she can trust. I wish she could be rehomed, I don’t think he’ll ever change his ways. Because people jump right to being defensive, and shut down, quit listening, and quit cooperating. If you're after real results, you need to behave in the dog's interest, first, rather than your own.
I'm sure these people get an earful in someway or another. But you gotta be professional but ultimately you're there to help the dog and the owners establish a connection and a bond.

I feel like he can change. His laugh is genuine when he sees the dog going up the ramps and doing things of their own volition. It makes me believe that he never intended to truly mistreat the dog, but that his temper, coupled with not knowing how to properly train and deal with a dog, caused a buildup of stress and tension between him and the dog, and neither could work together very well. This all may be a game changer for him, and he obviously needs to get help with his anger issues. He's being held accountable for his actions, and he can admit that his actions have done damage- which is more than most. This doesn't excuse his actions, but it explains that he can change for the better. Nobody is ever permanently lost. The dog has started trusting him again, he realized he was wrong, and started to work with the dog, he even rides his bike with the dog- This is how humans can truly change for the better. This is how change works, and its so good, so good, that he's learned better.
Some guys just take it personal when a dog “doesn’t like them”. Dogs are great. They can roll with the punches and are such resilient loving creatures. Just have to try to be the dogs friend first and everything else tends to follow.
I also felt like the guy was frustrated and even disappointed in the dog. but he really came around after the clicker training and agility. Really lovely to see the change in him. He really turned it around 👍

I get how people can be angry with the husband, but I’d just like to say that I’m happy he has made such a huge turnaround in such a short amount of time. Good for him! And the family and the dog!

She was getting excited about playing with a freakin broom. That’s such a great opportunity to train and teach how to play and when to stop etc. Every moment can be turned into a learning moment unless the owner is incapable of thinking critically.

there's a brief moment at 9:04 right after the scene transition where he lifts her a little too, it's very fast and subtle. no wonder she's doing terribly with him when that's his idea of direction. you can tell it's a habit of his he doesn't even think about to just 'carry' her by the neck.

My first bull terrior was the best dog I ever had. Miss him so dearly everyday. He had cancer and past away in my arms. My boyfriend and I got recently a bull terrior puppy, he is 5 months old and training is going well. He is a happy puppy and I feel bull terriors are misunderstood. They are truely the best dogs with the correct training, lots of love and patience.
I would never be able to stand and watch this happen.
Someone should treat him the way he treats Dakota and see how he likes being:
Grabbed by the collar
Pinned to the floor
Smacked in the face
And dragged on the leash! Did you see that when they were about to do the agility training? He held the dog so high with the leash her feet weren't on the floor and was literally being dragged! He makes me sick. Throw the whole man away and keep the dog.

How delightful that Joe did a complete 360 and was able to say Dakota was his buddy and really mean it. All dogs need training to be the best they can be and I’m glad they found out rewards and love was the better way to go.
Wow, she really did a good job of not making the dad feel like he was getting scolded or berated for hitting the dog. She instead phrased it in a way that was calm, logical, and didn't shame him. If she didn't do that I doubt he would have listen and his pride would have kicked in and told him she was just being too sensitive.
He’s abusing the dog, no wonder she “acts up”. She’s probably stressed out living in that kind of environment. They should remove her from that house and give her to someone who can take better care of her
This is why it's so important to take dog training classes before getting a dog. So many owners go into it with all of these preconceived and incorrect beliefs and notions about dogs, how it should be, how to train them, and pretty much every problem they have with their dog stems from that. Learn about dog behavior, learn how to train and interact with your dog before they become a problem. Prevention is always better than reaction!

The dad reminds me of mine... and my parents were not just that way with the dogs. They were short tempered with my siblings and I as well. Wouldn't teach you how to do anything, but would punish you for not doing it right. In most cases with violence towards animals, (in my experience), the individual is also violent towards people. At least the guy in the show did try to change

There is a BIG difference between tapping and hitting. One way we trained my dogs was a two finger TAP on the snout. Only as hard as you tap your phone. We used it to let them know they were biting/eating something they weren't supposed to, and so now if you tap them on the snout they'll drop what they have in their mouth. They never flinch or get scared or act aggressively because it's not hurting them, it's not hitting them, that would just do the opposite of training
Great progress with the dad learning to love and train his dog! That experience will also make him a better parent.

Having worked as a Veterinary technician for a decade, more importantly having owned an English Bull Terrier for about 15 years their work is cut out for them. Bull Terrier's are highly rewarding when properly trained and a nightmare if not. I loved mine more than any other dog I ever had, it was a sad time of my life when she passed away.
So happy to see that the man was willing to give it another try and improve himself too! The dog looked more relaxed a d content as well.

I adore Victoria!!! She is not only dog trainer but a human trainer as well. The way talks and acts like a trainer is stinnunig! I love how she breaks down an idea to the owner to solve a problem.

I think sometimes people aren’t taught (as children) how to treat a dog properly and so they don’t know any better as adults, good on this guy for actually being open to learning, learning new things is never easy.
Joe's eyes were so angry at the beginning and his jaw clamped down. They were also squinted, another sign of anger. As the video progressed, his eyes started opening up more and brightening. That let me know that he wasn't just acting like he liked Dakota more - because his body language gave it away. That made me feel better because WOW, he was so angry at the beginning. It gives me hope that he actually stopped mistreating and abusing her.

Funnily enough he wanted a dog with a lot of energy.. 🤷♀️ this is the breed their "research" came up with. Even though a labrador also has a lot of energy, though it still needs basic training they are more known for being good beginner family pets over terrier types which have a pretty substantial prey drive as they're used to hunt small rodents and rabbits etc..

Whilst they truly are a wonderful breed known as the “clown dog” they do require an experienced owner. Their stubbornness is too often mistaken for low intelligence. NOT TRUE. In the instance of this family I hope they continue with their progress, however if it all starts to revert back to how it had been then it would be best and kinder to rehome Dakota
You can talk to children, they don't have instincts the same way dogs do. That attitude is not transferable at all.
@@Grintock a 1 year old child is not going to understand why it can't put the fork in the electric socket or drink the pretty blue liquid under the sink no matter how much you talk to them 🤨 they instuctually put things in their mouth to try and eat it because they are curious. A dog is a lot like a 1 year old toddler. The difference is I can teach the dog to sit still and not put stuff on their mouth

I feel sorry for the wife and kids as well as Dakota. If he hurts the dog he also hurts her. Abusers like this don’t often change. Leaving isn’t simple or easy but I hope that she can someday. I can see why the kids are so rough with Dakota, they’re just copying their father. So sad :(

Yes, My expressions of pure anger would instantly show. I wouldn't be able to control certain things with myself watching how he slapped her around and pretty much choked her while walking her around in the agility room.

We got a pitbull from the shelter years ago, he's gone now, wonderful dog, very sweet, but when we first got him I noticed he would tense when we reached out to pet him. It was heartbreaking, clearly someone had been hitting him, so sad because he was such a sweet boy

Bull Terriers need people who understand them. They are honestly not like ANY other breed. They need people contact and involvement and they love to be included in their humans' activities. They are highly affectionate and quite intense because they don't know they're not human. They need patience, firmness, games that challenge and entertain them and lots and lots of love. They're actually really intelligent but they are stubborn. They're not for everyone... if you want something that behaves like a labrador, don't get a bullterrier. I've had one from 8 weeks and another as a 3 year old rescue. They're phenomenal pooches 🙂
I make that same ah ah! noise w my pets. It refocuses them. Even my cats!! 🙏🏼
Some here with my Yorkie. She is eight years old, so well behaved and everyone loves her, she is a treasure to have 💕
I actually struggled with my dog that had trust issues with me. I didn't really know how to handle it, coz praise didn't really work, joe did food or play, but Victorias videos helped me think a bit deeper inside a dog's head and I managed to fix the situation, by playing and praising his friends around him to show him "hey look everyone else is having a good time like this" and he just seemed to get it. It's like all the pressure on him just went away and he wanted to fit in with the rest of the dogs having fun. Like if I'd call him, he'd get skittish and leave, but then when I call him friends and they come, I praise and play with them and he would then feel more confident to approach. He was and still is friend motivated :) I also wanted to get rid of him because he drove me nuts as I had no idea what to do, but now he's my partner and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Victoria.
My dog learns best from other doggos doing the tasks I need her to perform, so I show her videos of dogs performing the tasks successfully.
I hope the dog gets a new owner 🙏💜

The awful situation with Nikki and Dan Phillipi made me think of this family. Same breed of dog with a family that WAS NOT prepared for a bull terrier. I know this channel doesn't really get involved with TH-camr issues but it would be interesting to hear Victoria's thoughts on the matter.
