My late father kept playing this song the last month or so before his sudden death, the lyrics hold some relevance for me with that. 14 years on i put this on to settle my children to sleep ❤
When I lived in County Mayo, my sister was a barmaid in the local pub, and Dolores used to drink there, my sister was new, and she didnt realise who it was and she actually put her cd on, turned this right up and sad to Dolores "God, Dolores Keane's brilliant, isn't she ?" lol x LOVEEE this song :-) x
Hers is the best cover of this song I've heard. There's something about female Celtic singers anyway. I feel the same way about Enya that I feel about Dolores Keane. It tugs at my DNA for some reason - my soul. I'll chalk it up to my Norse/Scandinavian/English heritage. But their voices hit me in a way no one else's does.
A song which rouses the deepest, most ancient part of your being, reminding you of your native land and your wonderful beloved family, neighbours and friends. This is a song which makes me think so strongly of my grumpy old dad who has a lovely Irish sentimental side, and my wonderful, beautiful sister, the best friend that I EVER had. My heart twists inside me hearing the lyrics here as I miss her so much and I hope that she's okay. I don't know why she went so wonky, but she can keep the damn house for all I care if that's what she wants. I don't care about money. I just miss her so much. Nobody else in my life has ever been so good, thoughtful and caring as she. It's like as if I was missing my right arm. God bless ye both.
Does the same for me. It grabs at something in my DNA. My U.K. lineage might be part of it; just feels right. But it also _feels_ like my dear departed wife holding me and telling me she's fine and everything will be okay and we'll be one again somehow, someday. I never heard this song until a couple years ago even though Dolores Keane's cover is 35 years old now, because it got no airplay in the U.S. That's a pity, but I'm certainly glad I was still around to hear it and have it talk to me and comfort me. Especially today. Been a tough day; my heart and soul had a rough time of it today and putting this song back on has helped tremendously.
@@briane173I'm sorry for your pain Sir. She sounded like she had been a good wife. They're very rare. God bless her spirit, her memory. It takes a rare man for a rare woman too, it must be said. Ye will be together again soon. Life is fleeting. Precious memories and being good to those around us and our people is what is most important and will be remembered in one's last thoughts. Hope you're feeling a bit better. God bless (from Éire) ☘☘🇮🇪🏴🏴🏴🙏🙏
l heard her cover this on an album featuring a lot of Celtic singers, and hers is the best version, no doubt. But even better than that one, which she sang solo, is _this_ one, accompanied by the backup singer/guitarist. That adds that one special ingredient that was missing on her solo recording, and it adds a great deal to the song itself. It's stuck in my head and heart forever now.
You're not kidding! Best cover of this song out there. Quintessentially _Irish._ She has such a powerful and pure voice; no need for auto-tune, she hits every single note square on, and that's what makes this music so enjoyable some 40 years on. Music today is so unimaginative, homogenized, computerized, it has no heart, no soul; it is dead. This tune and Keane's performance goes right to the DNA of anyone with English/Scottish/Irish heritage. It grabs the heart and breathes love and contentment onto it. The song Dougie MacLean composed is lovely, this cover does it _and_ his homeland perfect justice.
This song is so multi-layered for me.....Caledonia, aside from the actual country of Scotland, can be the great love of your life, your own personal place of safety, your homeplace, your family, God's Kindgom of grace, Jesus, whatever. It has all those meanings for me actually, and when I hear Dougie's great heart in words, in Delores' rich voice so full of feeling....well, I am there...it puts that lump in my throat and makes that squeezy thing happen in my chest...
Caledonia is my true home, heaven. Its my soul receiving her lover, the Holy Spirit. Wow u said it all for everyone who adores this song and Dolores voice. It can mean many things to many people. You put it beautifully in your post. ❤
I feel Ireland calls my Nana and all he kin were Irish and my Pop had a great great grandfather sent in chains from Ireland in 1840,I have Dreamed most my life of going to Ireland such a Beautiful COUNTRY that has Courage, and such beautiful Singers and Dancers I live in a Country town built by by Convicts who I hold in greatest respect. My Great Grandfather wrote this on it fell from a book on a small card Erin I Shall Always Miss Your Beautiful Shores.I am so proud to come from People who have come from such a wonderful Country,Beautiful Song touches my soul. Australia gets her strength from the Irish who came to this Country by force or choice and enjoying a laugh and a drink at a pub, thank you for posting.
+clarebannerman THANK YOU SO MUCH CLARE I WILL LOVE TO LISTEN TO MORE MUSIC THAT MAKES ME FEEL I AM WITH MY PEOPLE AND ALIVE WITH IRELANDS BEAUTIFUL VOICES.
+Lisa Russell Lisa, what a lovely note to leave, I can tell by your writing that you have "The spirit of the Gael". You have to put those dreams in motion today. Go down and open an account in the post office and call it your "trip to Ireland" account, just make the first lodgement even if it is only a dollar. Once you start, you won't stop. Come and experience the "Wild Atlantic way" which has recently been upgraded. Visit the cliffs of Moher, The Burren, Giants causeway, Connemara, West cork and West Kerry. It took for me going to live in the states for three years to appreciate what I had left behind. I returned to Ireland in 1991 and could not be happier. I know I'm biased, but I do believe Ireland is the best country in the world to live in. Check out a video on youtube - Song for Ireland - by the Dubliners with lyrics. This song was written by an English folk singer called Phil Colclough and his wife June who had lived on the west coast of Ireland for a spell and fell in love with the country and it's people. The famous English folk singer Ralph McTell, who also has a love for Ireland, has always said that he wished that HE had written "song for Ireland"! Ps, you can also research where your people were originally from before they left these shores!
+Arthur McBride Dear Mr McBride thank-you I will start a account and save to come visit Ireland I can not explain how deeply I love Ireland my Great Grandfather returned to Ireland at 72 the first time since her was 23 he stayed for 9 months had it not been for Family in Australia I know that was where is heart & Soul was feel Ireland in my blood I would love to move there and bring back some of my families Irish souls that long to rest in the land of there home. I will look up the song you wrote about I listen to a lot of Irish singers The one where A young man was sent away so there babe My last the nite for some stolen corn I love the group Celtic Thunder and was so sad for the loss of George Donaldson when I was a child my Nan who was my best friend would take me Irish dancing my feet always want to jig when I am happy or hear music have to watch myself when out shopping.if you know of any more song plz post I love the folk songs, thank you for kind words Mr McBride .
Please go Lisa, I know your heart is in Ireland. Ireland's not a daunting, impersonal place. The people in the countryside will make you feel right at home. Regards James
A voice so powerful yet effortless. A voice of that quality is so rare anyway, but to breeze through each note with no vibrato, that is SO hard to do. Dolores does it with ease. I've heard her do other songs with gorgeous natural vibrato, so to be able to do a song either way is just indescribable talent.
Shes an amazing singer. I saw her recently at a concert she was still brilliant even though she was extremely drunk and forgot many of her words. have to love her :D
Without question. It was performed by Dolores 35 years ago but I never got to hear this until a few years ago because it never got airtime in the U.S. The song itself is lovely but Dolores Keane's voice is SO perfect for this ballad. Needs no vibrato and it's forceful and comforting. This song has really struck something deep in my soul; part of it might be my U.K. heritage but it also _feels_ like my late wife holding me and telling me she's fine and everything will be okay. Strange but true. Makes me sad but also gives me hope and comfort.
Such IMAGERY in this song... "Sitting here before the fire, the empty room, the FOREST CHOIR..." Only someone close to the "faerie folk" could create such imagery, no? (And what a fine voice has the lass!) Thank you, Clare Bannerman...
If you have one drop of Celtic blood it will rise....can't help itself, This song is so multi-layered for me.....Caledonia, aside from the actual country of Scotland, can be the great love of your life, your own personal place of safety, your homeplace, your family, God's Kindgom of grace, Jesus, whatever. When I hear Delores sing D. MacClean's great heart in words....well, I am there...it puts that big ol' lump in my throat and makes that squeezy thing happen in my beating heart...
LOVELY SONG AND A LOVELY VOICE WELL SUITED THERES NO MANY CAN SING THIS GREAT SONG AND SHE DOES IT WELL I WOULD LOVE TO HERE HER SINING THE DARK ISLAND BRILLIANT SINGER /////////

For me, this song epitomises Scotland. I love it, I miss it, I will always be Scots. Thank you Dougie Maclean for putting into words what it means to be Scots. Unless you're from this great country, you'll never truly understand the feelings this song conjures up (no matter who sings it!) but listen to it and you'll be a part of it...and we'll welcome you with open arms to the friendliest country in the world.
