Celt music is very raw and truthful….my father and mother were immigrants to England, from Ireland. I was born here I. 1962, and spoke English easyish….but my parents were Gaelic…. Discrimination was hard for my parents, but they worked hard and the English people welcomed them with open arms. English people are honest with immigrants so long as you are honest and want to fit in….you must work hard like they do and not expect no favours. Don’t take the piss and they will respect you…

My thanks will always be towards the Czech government after WW2 for their aid to Israel after an embargo against Israel was set up that nobody was allowed to sell Israel arms to protect themselves from the onslaught 1947. That conflict, as can be seen today hasn't ended. As an Irishman said all of the Earth belongs to Ireland but Israel is Ireland's heart and soul.

I know this song is practically a Phil Coulter's memory of Derry, but it really transcends all borders and everyone can in one way or the other relate to it. That is why this song will always be relevant and "modern" even though it is already about half a century old. Well done mr. Coulter and well done Luke. If it wasnt't for Luke I don't know if it would generate that kind of "notoriety" and fame. R.i.p. Luke, you are one of the greatest ever.

Luke had the unique ability to put emotion into every word he sang. This is a sad strained song and from the begining you can hear both of those things in his voice. I wish i was alive to see the man. Met a few lads who heard him in concerts and in sessions. From what i can gather, the recordings dont do him justice. Passion for this music was something Luke was just able to put across to the listener. I doubt we will ever see another like him

you can see that they are sweating heavily in every concert. this was for a tv recording in belgium (in front of a terrible, terrible audience), so the lights for tv gave them some extra sweats. i think (but of course could be mistaken) he was in an angry mood, trying to get the audience to clap along for a few songs before this one and the audience only followed for a few seconds (they seemed to be rather the opera viewers then irish folk). he closed the gig by saying "i hope you enjoyed it as much as we did" and i'm sure that was quite ironical. but i assume he was just in the right mood for this song, passion mixed with some anger and frustration. incredible performance as always from them and him. he had so much more to give, shame he passed away so early. :-/

I recently returned to Dublin after 4 years. I saw they had erected a small statue of Luke near Grafton St. I almost wept. I made sure my wife took a photo of me with it. Solidarity, Irish Republicans. Never forget the four green fields.

There are actually two statues of Luke in the city. He has appeared on two postage stamps, has a bridge named after him and recently a 15 euro silver coin issued with his image.

I woke up with this song playing in my head. Had to listen to it now to quiet the restlessness in my soul. Been wishing I could go back to "better days." Luke Kelly's rendition helps me realize that "what's done is done, and what's won is won, and what's lost is gone and lost forever." That line helps me to move on and keep moving on and not just pine for the past I'll never get again.
