James and Ninetailedbrush are reacting to Peter Pan 2003! This adaptation of the classic book/play was awesome!! I loved how Captain Hook was portrayed in this movie, but honestly, they were all great! Wendy, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and so many more go on a wonderful adventure to Never Neverland and boy is it incredible!!! Enjoy this first time watching reaction to this awesome fantasy movies!

this is without question the best adaption of peter pan for so many reasons; the acting/writing, the look, the soundtrack, the perfect mix of action and whimsy and how well it portrays the genuine feelings between wendy and peter, as well as hook as a layered villain without taking away from his overall evil. that scene with him reacted to peter and wendy dancing i consider especially masterfully done.

Mrs. Darling’s speech about their father’s choice to put his own dreams “in a drawer,” in order to prioritize his family is one of my favorite bits of dialogue in any movie. So sweet, and so true of many fathers!

Fun fact: Some time ago Jeremy (Peter) and Rachel (Wendy) admitted that they fell in love during the film, and that they were also each other's first love, but they decided to keep their privacy and not reveal that they were dating. But they said that clearly what they felt was reflected in their characters who lived the same. When I was little Peter Pan was my favorite story, because I also loved telling stories to my two little brothers. I dreamed of the idea of Peter coming through the window and taking us on great adventures.
If i remember correctly to, Jeremy calls her ‘always my wendy’ and his new love (wife i believe), ‘his tinkerbell’ because the new love stuck around while Wendy flew home.
Same my mom would have to coax me away from the window as I was convinced Peter would come and take me to Neverland it never happened but I did go to wonderland and I never left

Fun Fact: Jeremy Sumpter(Peter Pan) went from five feet tall to 5’8 during filming. The window of the nursery had to be rebuilt 4 times because the actor kept hitting his head on it.

Also I loved how this movie emphasized that this is Wendy’s story. Hook represents her fears about adulthood and Peter is her childhood hanging on. I think it’s really well illustrated in the fight Hook and Peter have at the end about her. Hook saying that Wendy will eventually forget all about her childhood. There’s a lot of closure when she kisses Peter and makes a promise to always carry her childhood with her and not become bitter and burdened with jealousy towards youth like Hook.

Reading the original story the fear I come away with is a demon boy deceiving and kidnapping my children, and bringing them to an island where he erases their memories and makes them fight to the death in his pirate wars, eventually, by his own hand, executing those who survive to a certain age. BECAUSE THAT'S THE ACTUAL STORY!

Genuinely impressed that they adapted the 'I do believe in Fairies' scene and made it work. In the play it's a fourth wall moment where the audience joins in to revive her, most adaptations avoid it because it's hard to translate to screen.
Made even better because that only became a tradition after the first show. They thought no one in the audience would clap so they had the orchestra prepare to clap. It was a surprise when everyone joined so vehemently.
I agree! And not only did they take on the challenge of adapting it for the screen, they made it one of the best scenes in the entire film.

The absolute hold this movie had over my childhood. This is the only rendition I’ve ever known. My younger sister growing up had John, Michael, and Wendy imaginary friends that had to have their own seat in the car 😂 I didn’t realize until later that Jason Isaacs played the dad and hook. Also there’s an extended scene on dvd of Peter coming back to the window but Wendy is a mom w her own kids.
Ashley Irving: Wendy with her children... and husband. Just as Hook said. This is why Peter Pan never returned to her in this movie - adult relationships kill childhood and he almost died for that once. He chose eternal youth.
The book is crazy in its own way.

I think in most versions the dad and hook are played by the same actor i think its to do with the way the children see their dad at the beginning as they think hes being cruel like hook only to later realise hes just trying to be a good father

Id like to think peter would not kill them, but at the same time, peter and the lost boys have grown up in a world much harsher than the one wendy and her brothers have. So i dunno about that one. As for the aging thing, if your referring to the movie “Hook” the this is something that has confused me also, because peter claims to have been a baby when he first went to neverland, so how he was able to grow up i dont know, especially since we see him get a little bit older everytime he goes to visit wendy. I think thats probably one of the major plotholes of the film, but i still enjoy it.

So for those that don’t seem to understand why the actor who plays Hook also doubles as Mr Darling: It’s a tradition since the original 1904 pantomime. Why they’re usually played by the same actor is because both Hook and Mr Darling represent the darker elements of adulthood. The characters parallel each other.
The difference is Darling eventually learns his lesson about respecting children and letting them grow up on their own schedule whilst Hook in most versions does not.
Peter mimicking the voices, fooling Smee, and mocking Hook, and the crocodile coming and attacking Hook and him screaming “SMEEEE!”, all that was the best scene of this movie in my op

Fun fact! The actress for Princess Tiger Lily is actually native American and in a bonus feature she explains what exactly she said to Hook. It's been ages since I've watched it though so I can't give a bunch of info.

Adult Wendy is the one that’s telling the story. Her ending scene was cut, which is really unfortunate. Because it’s her telling the story to her daughter, Jane, and Peter then comes and takes Jane to Neverland to continue the adventure.

I am actually grateful that they did cut it. Did see the deleted scene on the DVD was will say it wasn't that great. also it felt a bit off on that ending deleted scene like Peter just decided to go oh nevermind on wendy i will go for the daughter now.
I've always LOVED this movie! I remember being mindblown when I realized Mr. Darling and Hook are played by the same actor. I was still a kid, so no wonder I didn't recognize him, but still, props to Jason Isaacs for *nailing* both parts! And Jeremy was my first celebrity crush thanks to this movie 🤭
Its the same i most versions I believe in the disney cartoon they are voiced by the same person I believe it’s supposed to represent the kids outlook on life seeing adults as bitter and mean and children as good and innocent. Thats the way ive always interpreted it anyways
Jason Issacs was interviewed and said the story is truly about puberty. It’s also his favorite role he’s ever done.

This is the most faithful adaptation on film of J.M. Barrie's original work. The themes came right from the themes of the play, almost unadulterated. The casting was amazing. I even forgave them for casting an American boy as Peter Pan - it was the first time Peter Pan was ever played by a boy, so let's count ourselves lucky. That's amazingly true. From 1904 to 2003 no boy played Peter Pan on stage or in film before Jeremy Sumpter.
By the way, the year after this film came out Great Ormond Street Hospital would lose the royalties from Peter Pan - donated by J.M. Barrie - when it finally hit the public domain.
When I was a kid, I didn’t notice his accent was different from the others. I think his lisp helped.

@@HeatherDeweyPettet Walt Disney made a deal with Great Ormond Street Hospital to buy the animation rights to Peter Pan. This deal included royalties to go to the hospital. A similar film rights deal took place between TriStar and the hospital for Hook.

I haven't watched this movie since I was a child. Now I'm 24, and I have a 4 year old son. The movie hit me in a completely different way this time. I cried so much watching you react to it. Just imagining losing your child, not knowing what happened... there's no bigger fear as a parent. The movie captures that feeling so well. This really is a fantastic movie. 😭❤️

Peter and Hook have a lot in common but mostly they share the fear of time. Peter doesn't want to grow up, meaning adulthood, feelings, responsibility and such, and Hook doesn't want to grow old, meaning death, and that's what represent the ticking inside the crocodile. The ticking of time passing by, death slowly creeping up on you... And yes you could say that Hook is jealous of Pan, afterall Peter represents internal youth.
This movie will always be a part of my life, it's just pure nostalgia. I'm so glad you guys reacted to it!

This movie means so much to me. Jeremy Sumpter (Peter) is actually “reacting” to the movie in parts. I forgot the name of the channel because it’s not his. Anyway, I can’t wait for your reaction guys! Let’s not forget the dad is Lucius Malfoy as well as Captain Hook. Don’t remember if the author or the director, but one of them has the tendency to have the same actor play the father figure and the villain.
Jumanji did the same thing. Ironic since next week they’re watching Hook. (Robin Williams)

In the original play, the same actor who played George Darling also played Captain Hook. That is how it has been for every stage production of Peter Pan. The casting for this film is a callback to that.

The "Hidden Kiss" is a metaphor mentioned briefly in J.M. Barrie's original book. It seems to have a double-meaning: (1) It is the first sign of a girl's emerging womanhood, and (2) it refers to a woman's finding her true love ("Tis a powerful thing", as both Slightly and Tootles point out).
Peter Pan was originally conceived as a play, then later adapted to a novel. It's believed that Peter is based on J.M. Barrie's older brother David, who died in an ice skating accident the day before his 14th birthday. Thus, he's the boy who would never grow up. Barrie donated the copyright to Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, located in London, in 1929.
lol im super late to this but one of the things that hits my heart the most is Peter going from saying "to die would be an awfully big adventure" to "to live would be an awfully big adventure" because he's initially just saying it to Hook because 1. he can't really die/it's hard to kill him (flex) and 2. just to antagonize Hook by saying he doesn't care if he dies , but then it moves to looking at all the people he's ever cared about getting to fully live their lives, and while Peter will always remain Peter and never grow up, he actually longs for the idea of being able to fully live. The biggest adventure of all for him would be to be a normal boy, but that's not in the cards for him. It's heartbreaking to me

Love this movie! I'm a little bit late to the party but I wanted to contribute this:
Here is an excerpt from the novel, when Peter talks to Wendy and the Lost Boys after she has told the boys a story about parents:
"Wendy, you are wrong about mothers."
They all gathered round him in affright, so alarming was his agitation; and with a fine candour he told them what he had hitherto concealed.
"Long ago," he said, "I thought like you that my mother would always keep the window open for me, so I stayed away for moons and moons and moons, and then flew back; but the window was barred, for mother had forgotten all about me, and there was another little boy sleeping in my bed."
IMO this adds even more pathos to the moment in the movie where Peter closes the window to try and make Wendy's parents forget/give up on her and her brothers. When they refuse, saying the window must always remain open, they are doing what Peter's mother did not. Which is why he's so upset and angry in that moment.
If you see the deleted scene it made me bawl cause it’s about him visiting Wendy but she’s grown up, married with a kid and the reality just hits hard for me
This is the best version of Peter pan. The subtext and exploration or what it means to grow up and put childhood aside is amazing.

I will always think that Jason Isaacs done a great job with Captain Hook! This is one of my favourite Peter Pan movies but the original animation and Hook are still top tier 😍

Peter Pan was origionally a stage play that was adapted into a book. Of all the Peter Pan adaptations I've seen on screen, this one is the closest to the book. In most adaptations, Hook & Mr. Darling are played by the same actor, even in the Disney animated version. Until the Disney version came along, Peter had usually been played by a woman.

Not quite true. Peter Pan first appeared in an adult novel by J.M Barrie in 1902. Then in 1904 Barrie wrote the play, where he altered some of the story. And in 1906 the children's book, "Peter Pan in Kensington Garden" was released and in 1911 the book "Peter and Wendy" was published, which is the story most people know 😊
This is my fav Peter Pan adaptation, which yes is a very subtle kids book. You're right about the crock being a metaphor for time always chasing after us. I think the tragedy of Peter is that he's the spirit of youth but has all these responsibilities, if he grew up Neverland would die and yet you really want him to.
I like how there's this ambiguity about how much of their adventure in Neverland is real and how much is a dream. Makes me think about the potential significance of Captain Hook being identical to Wendy's father.
I know that Captain Hook and George Darling being played by the same actor is simply a tradition that began with the earliest productions and nothing more, but it's fun to speculate.
This was my favourite movie when I was a kid. Jason Issacs as Hook was definitely a highlight. Hook from this movie was also my first childhood crush according to my parents 😂
Ah yes, the one where Wendy is blatantly attracted and thus manipulated by Hook, who just happens to look the same as her FATHER. As my sister commented "Daddy issues ahoy!". Jason Isaacs mentioned in interviews that in the script, the whole Wendy/Hook thing was even more disturbing, but on the day of shooting he told the director he just could not film that with the young lady playing Wendy, thankfully the director agreed!

This is my favourite of the Peter Pan film interpretations. If you're jumping into the lore, you'll definitely enjoy "Hook", as well as "Finding Neverland" with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, which tells the story of Sir J.M. Barrie's friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. Dustin Hoffman and Freddie Highmore star as well.
I absolutely adore the whole vibe of this film. That scene where peter is tempting wendy, with the slo mo and the music, ranks up there with my fav movie scenes of all time. The feeling that scene gave me at 10 years old in the cinema, I’ll never forget it. Lovely stuff!
I love how this story really speaks differently to children and grown-ups. I feel that is something that was somewhat lacking in the older animated movies which were more specifically made for kids, but that has been brought back in the more recent 'kids movies'.
To me PP symbolises both the fear of growing up (as seen in Peter Pan), but also the idea that as adults you should leave behind your 'childish behaviour'. I love how Mr Darling at the end first tries to 'be reasonable' about seeing his children again, but then breaks down in happy tears.
If you haven't seen the movie Finding Neverland (2004) I would definitely recommend that to learn more about the author (playwright) of Peter Pan and story of what inspired him to write it.
This adaptation definitely gets its source from the original book/play by J.M. Barrie and honestly has one of the best film scores ever. It’s also a usual trop to have the same actor play both Hook and Mr. Darling (the dad), they even continue that in the Disney Peter Pan and the stage musical.
You should also look up Peter Pan Goes Wrong, it’s hilarious!!
This is one of my FAVORITE adaptations of Peter Pan. Looking at the story through the lens of a parent is eye-opening. I want my child to stay a child forever, but it's not possible. The ending where Mrs. Darling couldn't see that her children had returned resonates because ALL parents have seen their children asleep so often it feels like a dream. Love this movie!
16:16 actually having the same actor play Mr. Darling and Captain Hook is a tradition that goes back to the earliest stage productions of the Peter Pan play. Even Walt Disney upheld the tradition by having actor Hans Conried provide the voices for both roles in the 1953 animated film.
This film is definitely in my top three favourite Peter Pan films
Jason Isaacs I believe the first actor to play Captain Hook as having his right had cut off. He had to learn how to use his left hand for the sword scenes. He said that he came up with the idea to make it harder
In the book it is his right hand that's missing
In the book, they explain that the island is basically connected to Peter. So when he’s gone everything kind of goes to sleep. That’s why it was winter longer when he was gone.
I read somewhere that while Peter Pan is what the kids would be like without a father, Hook is what Mr. Darling could be like without his wife. Not sure if that was the authorial intent, but it is an interesting interpretation.

Will ALWAYS be one of my favorites. This movie really allowed itself to live in the story. Colors, acting choices, morals and themes all feel genuine.
The story telling in this movie is amazing. Imagine all the children who grew up watching it. It's amazing.

This version, Peter Pan Goes Wrong (can't recommend enough especially to anyone who enjoys the likes of Starkid) and the Mary Martin version from the 60's are my top three favorite versions. I love how Smee is actually somewhat competent in this version, I love that for him. And Hook is actually intimidating while still having his entertaining mannerisms.
Grew up with the Mary Martin version and still love it; this movie is good, but only for Jason Isaacs' Hook.

The Mary Martin Peter Pan musical was originally on stage in 1954 and then was live on TV on March 7, 1955, which was 2 days before my 8th birthday, then it was shown again in January 1956. The 1956 one was then shown in color in 1960, (for those who had a color TV, which wasn't very many then. We didn't get our color TV until 1966.
It’s really vindicating as a big fan of this movie that you guys caught so many of the themes and fun connections between the characters. I don’t think most Peter Pan adaptations do a good job of painting pan and hook as two sides of the same coin. And Jason Isaacs playing both Mr. Darling and Hook is so brilliant
In all productions with live actors, Mr. Darling and Peter Pan are always played by the same actor (except in "HOOK" with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman) and in most stage productions, Peter Pan is usually played by a woman or girl. Some actresses who have played Peter Pan in the past are Mary Martin (1954, '55, '56, '60. Sandy Duncan in 1979, and Cathy Rigby (the former Olympic gymnast) played Peter Pan after she retired from gymnastics and had around 3,000 performances. I was lucky enough to see her live on stage years ago and she was phenomenal, especially her "flying" skills which also should her gymnastic abilities. PLUS I didn't know she could SING! She has a very nice voice. It was the same Peter Pan musical that originated with Mary Martin on stage in 1954. Same music and songs;
The new Peter Pan movie that’s coming out from Disney is actually the first movie that’s going to deviate away from the father and Captain Hook being the same character. This is a custom that has been done by every production since the first play. It’s also very symbolic. The few their father, as this opposing figure that’s supposed to childhood, and that’s exactly what hook us. An enemy to childhood.
That's because this wasn't the case in the animated version either.
Wrong! Hans Conried voiced both the father and Captain Hook in the original Disney animated version.

Hook is the best Pan themed movie. But the best Peter Pan adaption is this one. It doesn't rush through the story like the Disney version. It gives each character room to breathe.
I love this Peter Pan movie for so many reasons, but I think my number 1 reason are the complex characters. Take Peter for example. He looks about 13, just on the cusp of adulthood. He is attracted to Wendy, but romantically accepting her would require a level of emotional maturity that he isn't ready for (or isn't supposed to have). So he runs away. Still, he can't help but feel a little disappointed that she won't stay with him.
Now let's look at Hook. When he sees Peter and Wendy dancing, I speculate that he becomes jealous. Peter may have a romantic partner but Hook knows that nothing will become of it because Peter is a child. At the same time, Hook is an adult but doesn't have anyone he views as a romantic equal. It's like wanting a promotion at work but seeing an unqualified coworker get it instead. So he tries to sway Wendy to his side. Not for romantic reasons, but because he just doesn't want Peter to have the POSSIBILITY of romance. This changes when Hook realizes before the final battle that Peter actually does have feelings for Wendy, so he uses them against Peter.

The gentle guitar strumming over a pink sunset and Wendy crying a single tear, moments before Hook is about to kill Peter is probably one of my top 5 most memorable moments from both my childhood and all-time
My best friend in elementary was OBSESSED with Jeremy Sumter and this movie growing up.
I think I liked the adventure and wish fulfillment aspect.
Also there’s a reason why the soundtrack has endured almost longer than the film: I think Disney used it for ads in the 2000s? Maybe universal? It made everything so magical

I adore this film. It works brilliantly as a film while also succeeding as an adaptation. Many of the deeper themes of the play/book are taken up, and as you say, it is indeed much more intelligent and mature in its treatment than one might have expected it to be. Jason Isaacs is magificent - so subtle, nuanced, thoughtful in a role that any other actor would soon have turned into an insufferable, affected parody.
I just adore the child actors in this movie, especially Peter and Wendy. Both have embodied the characters so well that I can never imagine another Peter and Wendy, it’s only them. Peter’s childlike playfulness and mischievous stares, Wendy’s loving and gentle demeanor, they’re forever in my heart. And rewatching it with you guys, it warms my heart to see you guys enjoy and appreciate this wonderful movie, and just proves to me how timeless this movie is, as it still holds that magic for me! ✨

I have three all time favorite movies, and this is one of them!! Such a well made, beautiful movie. Jason Isaacs and Jeremy Sumpter are amazing!
I remember watching this movie and Wendy's love obsession with Hook went completely over my head as a kid, this movie is one of my favorites for how dark it is, but yeah when the voice-over was talking about Wendy and Hook and her affection for him instead of fear I was completely oblivious to, even when Hook preyed upon it. This movie got away with a lot.
It was the opposite for me...the main reason why I don't particularly like the movie is because I did get it, and was extremely uncomfortable with the erotic undertones between a child and a grown man.
@@swanpride So was Jason Isaacs, who did not want it to come across like that and had their interactions toned down from what was in the script. But it still kinda does and it creeped him out when he saw the finished thing.
@@swanpride Yeah, I understand why it can make a lot of people uncomfortable, I understand it because it's an adult theme and because realistically Wendy was 13 officially a teen and developing an attraction to Hook which is something a lot of people experience as they grow.
But yeah when Hook started to prey on her affection for him as an older man that was ew.

As usual, people inject current ideas into works that aren't going that deep. Wendy, like a lot of girls, have crushes on older men. Like the Majority of men, they have no interest in little girls.
Hook Used Wendy to get to Peter. He didn't care about Wendy beyond how she could help him kill Pan. There's nothing beyond that... from what I recall from watching a long time ago, of course. haha
As a kid, I remember practically sobbing when Tink died. I was crying so bad my parents thought I was hurt or something
The most magical moment of this reaction was when both guys showed genuine concern and distress at Tink apparently dying.
i LOVE this movie! jeremy sumpter was such a crush lmao and jason isaacs playing both the father & hook was absolutely amazing. also, peter pan used to be my fav story when i was a child and hook was my fav “villain” even tho i never really saw him as the bad guy of the story since peter really tried his best to make him angry!

In the play Peter Pan the father always also plays Captain Hook. To get a better handle on the Pan story watch Finding Neverland with Johnny Depp as the author JM Barrie.

I love the themes of this movie but I particularly love the cinematography with the different colorful lightings sometimes pink, blue or green, and as you pointed out the storybook feel of Neverland everything is so unique and pretty !
I really look forward to your reaction to the Disney animated movie and Hook (which is one of my favourite movies) and see the differences with this but also how all the themes are still there it's gonna be interesting !
Also, another one of my favourite movies is Neverland it came out in 2004 with Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman and it's about J.M Barrie the author of the play and how he got inspired for the story ! So if you want to continue on your Peter Pan journey this would be a great one ! 😉
I'm loving the reaction to this guys! Obsessed is an understatement...that's how much this film meant to me growing up haha. I was fortunate to have seen this in the cinema and I'll never forget the beautiful cinematography and the colours. This is truly one of the most magical movies I have ever seen. I remember Jeremy Sumpter (Peter) was pretty much every girl's crush at time (although not for me lol). I also edited a music video as a tribute to this film when youtube was more "relaxed" with using clips. It was such a fun time experiencing the hype and the love this film got back then. I'm so glad to see you both enjoying it :) PS: the 'kisses' comment had me rolling James 😂
I first read the book when I was 16 and I remember it as quite dark but the symbolisms really blew my mind. I love how you guys are picking up on it!
No debate, hands down the best Peter pan adaptation. Nobody can change my mind. This movie was my childhood and I still watch it as my comfort movie to this day.
Peter represents immaturity. It seems fun and harmless until you peel back the surface and see the problems with always being that way. It goes against nature to not grow up and mature, but you don't have to grow up to be the extreme that Hook represents.

My favorite part of this film is the “flying” score. It was the first score I bought. I always picture a ballet on stage where they use wires to create a flying effect.
I always loved this version of Peter Pan because it emphasized J.M. Barrie's original idea that Peter wasn't fully human. From the way he hissed and flashed his sharpened teeth at the mermaids like a vampire, to his limited emotional range, to mimicking other animals, to outright controlling the weather and animals around him, J.M Barrie's Peter Pan was an incredibly primal creature and this is the only movie that went out of its way to portray that.
I was obsessed with this movie so bad as a kid that it was actually banned from a couple of my friends’ houses as a kid. I’ve watched it so many times that I still remember every single word in this movie. It became my comfort movie when I first got diagnosed Ulcerative Colitis and was something my mum bought for me to watch while I was staying in the hospital and it’s something I still watch when I get really sick and have to go to the hospital. BTW, the behind the scenes of this movie is so entertaining. They talk about all the stunts and Jeremy playing himself and his shadow.
I'd recommend you to watch Finding Neverland. It's a movie starring Johnny Depp about how J.M. Barrie, the playwright, found the idea and wrote the original Peter Pan play.

🤯I had never caught the symbolism of the ticking clock and it chasing Hook before! Also, comments like the “fairy rave” and “Hook as a sniper” comments made me laugh. Very fun and intellectual movie review!
I have loved every version of Peter Pan from the books to the movies, and I agree with other comments that this is one of the most faithful and charming adaptations that I've ever seen! Definitely my favorite!
I like how this Peter Pan movie asked interesting questions. I've not seen any other adaptations do that. The lines were lifted straight out of the book with the exception of the little jokes here and there, and the thought-provoking questions.
"Peter Pan" began as a play in 1904 by Sir James M. Barrie. It was so successful, Barrie also wrote it as a novel (book) later.

Fun Fact: Jeremy Sumpter (Peter) and Rachel Hurd-Wood (Wendy) were actually boyfriend and girlfriend. It didn't last though. Jeremy has said that Rachel was his first girlfriend and first love. They're still great friends to this day. Oh! And they both have a Peter Pan inspired tattoo because they love and have fond memories of this movie.
My goodness, i haven't watched this film since i was a teen. Revisiting it now, I'm really starting to appreciate the angle they took, having Jason Isaacs play Hook and Mr. Darling. Both, dictating the lives of the children in a way. Wendy overcoming her fear when they finally defeat Hook, seems to have translated over to her real life situation. I really liked the actors and their performances as well👏🏿👏🏼👏🏾👏🏽👏👏🏻
There's been many iterations of this film: live action, cartoon, stage... But this is by far, my favorite. Besides the stage production starring Mary Martin as Peter!
This is my favorite and most memorable Peter Pan adaptation. The soundtrack was epic as the writing and action. I remember the colors vividly like I watched it for the first time today. It’s just one of those movies as a kid that has stuck with, and when I watch it’s not only nostalgia, but the magic I feel. Glad you guys got to experience the movie!

I love the peter and hook similarities. Hook runs from time (Crocodile) taking him out. While Peter runs from time making him grow up.
This is by far the best adaptation of Peter Pan that I have ever seen! It's also my favorite movie ever! I agree that Jason Isaacs playing as George Darling and Captain Hook was to mean something important and I think that it may recall back to when Mary Darling was talking about George having his dreams locked in a cupboard. IDK, that's my best guess, but I super enjoyed watching you both react to this adaptation. I nearly squealed when I saw you'd done this one already.

Stage plays often double parts, and the part of Hook is often doubled with the father (or sometimes, I think, the mother--I am not sure which is more frequent, actually).
I don't have the DVD anymore, but its worth seeing the special features. The effects were done with care, and there are some good deleted scenes. This adaptation, as some has mentioned is close to the book, and reading up on how the story of Peter Pan came around is also interesting, as it's based on a real boy, and is quite sad, really.
In my opinion, which more or less agrees with Isaacs' own interpretation, the story is an allegory for transitioning into adolescence (Wendy is almost 13) and in a minor way, sexual awakening.
More recently, I've come to theorise that the whole thing is a fantastical take on Wendy's conflicting feelings about becoming an adult.
Hook would embody adulthood, but as seen through the eyes of a child: not fun or understanding, uncaring and detached, but at the same time alluring and enticing. That's why she pictures Hook in her father's likelihood, because in Wendy's mind, as much as he's a stiff man that reprimands her and wants to take her innocence away, she also admires him and recognizes him as a role model.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Peter. A boy that literally cannot grow up. What I find very telling is that he is the same age as Wendy; in other words, he too is on the edge of leaving childhood behind, but he's forever frozen before it happens. He represents the want of all children when they come to that point in their lives to stop the change and remain pure and unburdened by adult concerns.
"[...] would be expected to go to school. And then work a job. And become a father."
In the end, I think the most nuanced interpretation is to see Peter as the manifestation of Wendy's subconscious resistance to growing up. That's why, when she kisses him, it has a deeper reading: she's vowing to stay true to herself and never forget how it felt to be a child.

Jeremy Sumpter was the absolute best Peter Pan ever casted. I remember as a young boy feeling cheated when they had a woman play the part of Peter Pan instead of casting a real boy for the part. It simply ruined it for me.
But this version hit so many aspects of the original story. Jeremy Sumpter first of all was an amazingly beautiful boy. But his sparkling eyes and mischievous smile really made me believe he was actually Peter Pan. Julie Andrews eat your heart out! This kid was a thousand times better than she ever could have been.
The rest of the cast were amazing too. And I thought the Lost boys were just as cute as they could possibly be!
This is by far the very best live version of this story.

Literally my number one favourite movie ever. It has a very special place in my heart. It came out the year I was born and was something that stuck with me throughout my childhood. The movie itself still speaks to me now as I enter adulthood as well. 😭😭
This movie was EVERYTHING in a theater. I dragged my mom to it multiple times when I was 11, completely enchanted. Everyone has already said it, but the stakes were perfect every moment in this movie. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but leans in perfectly for heavy emotional moments throughout. After watching this, I think the movie Hook will break your hearts 🤧
