Restoration of a Rare UMT Screwdriver from ISRAEL

  • Funny Kenji story! While working for the MTA we routinely had to drive the busses thru the bus wash- Before the wash there was a huge pit that a mechanic could walk in and inspect the undercarriage of the bus. It was only used a few times a month... One day while driving over the 30 foot long pit I saw something dart across! I thought it was a Rat! However upon closer inspection I realized it was a small kitten! My friend Justin and I entered the pit from each end and caught the kitten! She was about the size of a soda can! Well, we looked all over for the mother to no avail- Afraid it would get hit by a bus I decided to take her home... The kitten was happy and healthy but needed a name- another friend at work said “How about Kenji!” I said “Kenji? I never heard of that!” He said Kenji was Japanese for “Lucky”. I thought “What a fitting name!” So I named her Kenji!!
    Fast forward three years and I find out Kenji doesn’t mean Lucky- it means “Strong, second Son”. To this day I never told Kenji the truth! 😃

    Here's some info on this screwdriver:
    UMT is the name of "Urim Metal" - an old metal factory in Kibbutz Urim (western Negev area) in Isreal. It started as "Urim Metal" - a factory for knives and cutlery (I think), that later (circa 1977) moved to manufacturing screwdrivers. During this transformation they also changed the name to "UMT".
    in a newspaper article from 1977 they claim to manufacture around 27 screwdriver models, which are assembled from 2 parts: an acetate handle made in germany by "Bayer", and the steel blade that is made locally in Israel.
    I believe the factory no longer exists today.
    I hope it helps, love your channel! :)

      ScoutCrafter thank you! It's the least I can do. Israel is quite young and doesn't have much history in tool industry, I was lucky to find that information myself :)
      You did a beautiful job on this one, just like on all the other tools. Thanks for taking care of these pieces of history!

      @@ScoutCrafter I got inspired watching your wonderful restorations and decided to try on some of my old tools. I started on a screwdriver that is almost a mirror copy of the one you did but I always have trouble shaping flat screwdriver heads - so you have a video that shows how to do this?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ian! In the beginning the best way to shape a screwdriver blade is by hand using sandpaper wrapped around a small block of wood! You are so right as it is very easy to over-grind the profile of such a small area!!!

      Bayer's history ties it to IG Farben. It's fascinating that an Israeli company would do business with them.

    Today I was lucky enough to find a 1/4x4 UMT screwdriver at a thrift shop. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone when I saw that it was made in Israel and that the blade was stainless steel. It had a bit of paint splatter, but in a few minutes, it cleaned up and looks nearly as good as your finished restoration. Thanks for the tip on the clear coat!

    ScoutCrafter, I just laughed hard when I saw this project because it has everything you love: Exotic, Hefty, and not just Red... translucent Red just like the Klein Plier grips you love so much. If we could, we'd have your whole shop dipped in transluscent red plastic!!! Nice job, really, and adding the clear coats really did make up most of the finish gap to what you wanted.

      Hello Joe! Very possible on the second coat!! The only reason I was very sparing with the clear is I want to see how it holds up! Will it crack and chip off? Will it fog or discolor? Hello Tony- Sometimes I would get guys at work that would say "I'm a dog guy, I don't like cats". I used to reply "unless you own a cat you have no idea what your missing" They really are unique aren't they? Thanks very much!!!! 😃👍

    Based on your two screw-driver restoration videos I recently purchased a handful of beat-up screwdrivers at our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
    I’ve restored two so far and it’s very gratifying. I certainly don’t NEED more screw-drivers but there’s something therapeutic about bringing something useful back to life.
    Thanks for the tips and inspiration!!

      Hello Matt ! That is so awesome! Screwdrivers aren't easy but it really is, like you said, rewarding!! Some come out better then others but all a great learning experience! Thanks so much!!! 😃👍

    Hot-Diggity, that is enjoyable to see and watch. I loved the wooden handle screwdriver, blown away by the acetate screwdrivers video, and this just adds to the library. We see those plastics, and think it must be a goner, but you still bring it back...

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Will!! You and I aren't the only people who like screwdrivers! I was pleasantly surprised to find out we have quite a few people who appreciate these forgotten tools!!!! I bought his at the flea market a couple weeks ago and when I asked the guy how much he looked embarrassed to ask one dollar... I guess he thought start high and when I offer a quarter he will come back with fifty cents! However you should have seen his smile when I said "ok sure!" Then as I gave him the dollar he looked almost guilty... Lol. I don't bicker over a few cents when the item isn't broken or overpriced... I'm glad I picked it up because it turned out quite nice! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

    Hey scout me again. The other night after watching one of your videos I got the itch to get out in the garage and restore one of my old tools. It's an old combo square that's been in my family for a long time. A couple generations at least . And it was pretty rusted could barely see the measurements. Long story short after a good polish up through the grits of some wet/dry paper it revealed a logo , turns out I've got my self a starret combination square . It's my go too I use it for everything and now I know that the old square I've been using is a starret . Just a silly little story but the idea is I just wanted to thank you for these great videos you keep pumping out they really inspire me and get the engine running. Keep it up thanks alot

      Hello CJ! That's always awesome to find out the tool is a Starrett!!! They made awesome stuff and still do! Did you see my video on Starrett's first invention! He was pretty amazing!!! I'm really glad you are saving these tools and giving them a second life!!! Thanks for sharing!!! 😃👍
