When poetry is set in music, this is what happens. Magnificent.
I do not know if anyone else has noticed this, but the use in this arrangement of a song about the mind that spins almost uncontrollably of the glass harmonica, an instrument that in order to produce a sound must physically spin, is both, symbolically powerful and hauntingly beautiful. The arranger commands all my respect.

Yes and it's also a great metaphor for the alchemical nature and cycles of life and the universe too. Supposedly light and time work in a spiral, not linear as we assume. (Look up Walter Russell) So this song is very metaphysical too. It also refects the Buddhist and Hindu concept of the cycle of life with no beginning or end either.

About six months ago I finally found a copper windmill music box that plays this song after four years of searching. I only found them on eBay and thought that the shipping cost was not worth it as a few listings had the shipping costing more than the music box itself. I also have a porcelain doll that plays the song as well.

One of the first pieces i learned on guitar. The line 1.09 "like a tunnel that you follow, to a tunnel of it's own. Down a hollow to a cavern, where the sun has never shone" has always stuck with me! mind you, the lyrics of this entire song. Describes the thought process i go through, as an adult, when I'm trying to understand someones suffering, who's been controlled and used by others! ILY always.

Some of the lyrics are different from many other versions, but for me it made the song is more understandable.
RIP Michael LeGrand. This song, Le Chanson Des Jumelles, Le Chanson De Maxence, and I Will Wait For You are my favorites by him, but all his work was exemplary.

I love this song but weirdly I seem to remember a line that went "And the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair" I had the feeling that the reference to Autumn in the song is of a time of our life where we are aging and the mind is becoming forgetful.

Yes, but Brel is another story... Do you know the musical " Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris..." with the incredible translations and adaptations of Mortimer Shumann who was a great friend of Brel. For me Brel's most poignant song is "Les Vieux/The Old Ones" because I am getting there and the clock here is speaking to ME too... in the original French! "Qui dit OUI, qui dit NON, qui dit JE VOUS ATTENDS."
Now... where Brel's song concentrates on the slowing down until the end, this Legrand song recalls the vortex of life and the perpetuation of love. It makes me think of the 1995 film "Bridges of Madison County" (Meryl Streep/ Clint Eastwood) where the children eventually refuel for Love at the very soul of their mother and of her brief and powerful secret love story!

I too forgot the amazing vocal range of Alison Moyet. I agree that there is no obvious story to her cover. But her voice is lovely enough to just enjoy. I don't know who wrote this song. From the first time I heard it (sung by a man) it sounded clever but rambling, like great lyrics but confusion as to what point it was making, or was the point confusion?
