    I had distal radius fracture a month ago. At first week and a half I got a backslab, then a full cast after swell went down. The cast includes my tumb and part of my elbow in a 90 degree horizontal. Hope this helps me a lot. I have two children and i'm a single dad. And having such a difficult time. Hope to recover soon and work. I just keep praying for you all ,that we get healed soon.

    I had an open fracture of my distal radius at the wrist. Dr Dwyer at MHMH had to put a plate, pins and screws. Just had my cast off after 8 weeks. It’s still pretty painful but hopefully after physical therapy it will get less pain. I’m also 66 which makes healing slowly. Overall very happy just anxious to have less pain. DHMC IS A GREAT HOSPITAL WITH VERY WELL TRAINED PHYSICIANS.

Also I ordered a wrist ball of Amazon which I squeezed everyday. The only time I feel pain is when I try to pick something up that’s heavy with an open wrist, this won’t stop you from carrying the object you find a different way to hold. Older people (60+) are usually happy even if the functionality of the hand is limited after the healing process. Many of them don't even profit from physiotherapy because it's painful and they won't do the exercises because they just don't need to bend their hand more than 30° anymore. That's why they are usually happy even if the result after the therapy isn't close to the functionality before the accident.
      When you're younger and still need your hand for work and stuff then it's a completelly different story...

      @@rosisunny9302 Last year I had a complicated fracture and had to wear a cast for 6 weeks. The joint of my wrist literally broke into 6 different parts and they had to use a metal plate and 13 screws to fix it. Back then the doctors were very careful to give me a prognosis that was too optimistic. Instead they used to tell me that my hand might have limited functionality later and that chronical pain might remain.
      Now - 1 year later - I'm almost back to normal. The plate and screws were removed after 6 monts, I don't have any more pain and the strength and flexibility is almost back to normal.
      But I'm still young (34) and after the cast was removed I went to phyio therapy at least 3 times per week for 2 months and I also exercised a lot at home. (at least 3 times per day!)
      That's why I made very big progress in a very short time.
      I wish you a fast recovery as well.

Other complications could be a non-healing wound.these complications can lead to a second surgery to clean everything out and replace the hardware. But that's pretty unusual. Just follow all of the doctors instructions.

    This procedure is just another good example of how the medical community in the US very genially advocates the incremental benefit of one procedure over another to boost its profit margins. How could you expect anything else from a healthcare system that is driven by profit? The profit motive works wonderfully for many things, but not for healthcare. The only way to bring down costs is to disengage the profit motive from the delivery of healthcare. That wont happen anytime soon.

    It sounds to me like you are pushing the plate and screws over pinning bigtime. Isn't fixating a plate and screws internally much more complicated? Isn't this much more invasive surgery? Doesn't it leave a scar? Isn't it always better to perform the least invasive surgery?

    • @loissterling7213
      @loissterling7213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so there's so much danger of infection in an external fixation and the pins and everything are sticking out where they could get caught on things and reinjured. I just had the internal fixation three days ago and already the pain is lessened and I can move my fingers so I'm really really happy with the orif. Still some danger of infection starting but I know what to look for and when to call the doctor if I need to

    Hi Dr. Warhold,I broke my radius into 7 pieces at the joint but they were able to set it without surgery,which surprised all the doctors.I play the guitar and it was my left hand which is my fretting hand and i,m concerned about not being able to play.Have you ever treated any guitarists with a severe break? If so how did they make out afterwards? Thanks for your time and great video.

    I had my both bones break near wrist on my right hand from falling on skiing. There was big deformity where my wrist went to right side, but it wasnt open fracture. My brother drove me to near hospital where they told me break was serious, they gave me anestesia and tried to bring it back in place. It was very painful, but succesful results considering how bad it was initially. I was put in cast and sent to my home town hospital. There they told me i will need surgery cuz my segments were not in line. I had surgery 3. February (11 days after injury) and they put external fixators and long pins going threw my arm. First day after operation was extramly painful, but it was going better and better. Now its 18 days after operation i dont have any pain. They told me they will get everything out after 6-8 weeks.
