When I was a kid, all stores had security guards. If you were caught stealing, you were thrown out immediately, and were not allowed to return. Stores were a lot safer then.

This reminds me of a store owner who jacked up all the prices in his shop, then gave out massive discounts at the register. This way, customers bought the products for a normal value; but without the coupons, just one stolen item is enough to get a thief into jail. I imagine that something like that could work here, if the District Attorney follows their own “rules”. Like if you want to buy a big shampoo bottle for $30, the price on the shelf would be $1030, and then you’d get a $1000 discount at the register. This way, anyone who steals it would be over the $1000 limit. It might be confusing for customers at first, but I think it could work.
It will no doubt be argued in defense of the thief that it isn’t reasonable to expect a bottle of shampoo to cost $1,000 and it could never be resold anywhere near that price so there was either no knowledge or no intent to break the threshold.

A few weeks ago there was an assault in New York, a couple of teenagers entered an electronics store and filled a bag with expensive cell phones, ran out the door, a few meters away they met a group of men who beat them and took what they had stolen in the store, the incredible thing is that they filed a report of theft and assault, they were not ashamed to admit that they had stolen, what upset them is that other people took advantage of them.

The politicians do not care about low income or even middle-income families, their agenda is to attract high wage people and keep them there. This reminds me of a store owner who jacked up all the prices in his shop, then gave out massive discounts at the register. This way, customers bought the products for a normal value; but without the coupons, just one stolen item is enough to get a thief into jail. I imagine that something like that could work here, if the District Attorney follows their own “rules”. Like if you want to buy a big shampoo bottle for $30, the price on the shelf would be $1030, and then you’d get a $1000 discount at the register. This way, anyone who steals it would be over the $1000 limit. It might be confusing for customers at first, but I think it could work.
I do not think that would hold up in court price gouging is a thing however he may have a loophole with the discount at the register.

A few weeks ago there was an assault in New York, a couple of teenagers entered an electronics store and filled a bag with expensive cell phones, ran out the door, a few meters away they met a group of men who beat them and took what they had stolen in the store, the incredible thing is that they filed a report of theft and assault, they were not ashamed to admit that they had stolen, what upset them is that other people took advantage of them.

I used to live, work, and go to school in NYC. I live an hour away and work 15 minutes away. I will not go into NYC for any reason now. Sooner or later, no one else will.
