I was fortunate to see Poco about a half dozen times, first time was shortly after Messina had left. They were billed 2nd to YES. To this day still the best concert I ever saw. I later saw them when Messina made a guest appearance . Also saw them after Furay left. Bur saw Furay when his band did a Delivering tour. Last saw them (and got pic with the band) a couple years before Rusty Young passed away😢
In my opinion Timothy Schmidt wrote the best songs for Poco between 1970 and 1977 in his time with the band. His voice us magical, songwriting great. I love his solo work. Don Henley and the Eagles would have out out even better material if they had allowed Timothy to write more if their songs. But I don't think Henley's fragile ego would ever allow it. Well then, at least we have Timothy's solo work and his beautiful Poco songs still to listen to. Amazing artist Timothy Schmidt is still.
@@DMorgan72 Oh hey yeah, I have the Day By Day CD, it's fantastic. I love Simple Man by Timothy on that album. Some great lead guitar on that song by Lindsay Buckingham too ! Great album!
Spot on on Henley. Intertwined here is that Henley kicked Randy Meisner out of Eagles and Schmidt came in to sing Randy’s parts. Schmidt is a good musician but the entire episode is depressing. Who knows how much interesting material from Don Felder that Henley and Frey spiked. Poco was and is cool.
How sweet is this man!! Love love love his voice. I wish he had been allowed to sing more leads with the Eagles. His voice is so precious. Fell in love with him back in the 70's and he still makes me feel like a love sick teenager today. So very talented and such a class act.
@@charlesreid9337 But it's not just as simple as dismissing him as a cancer. He and Frey drove the Eagles; it's not the Eagles without them and their drive for worldwide domination! Your statement that "his being part of the Eagles was the worst mistake they ever made" is such an odd one. You phrase it as if they brought him into the group late like TBS or Walsh.
Timothy still has that great voice! Ritchie's is pretty awesome as well! In their day, Poco was an awesome band, and definitely one of my favorite bands! In college, about 1982 or 83, a new woman I just met in the dorm, stayed up most of the night sewing the Poco Horse emblem on the back of my dungaree shirt! How I wish I still had it! I owe that precious SUNY New Paltz woman quite a debt of gratitude! BobbyK
Such a great song! One of my favorites from Poco. I was just telling my daughter the other day while listening to this in the car that I can’t believe this wasn’t a big hit. Many of their songs for that matter. I love In the Heart of the Night but, my God, Poco’s whole catalog are hits!
Well I never....God I love The Eagles.. and now Ive been introduced to 'Poco'...I love music so much, but sometimes I think I mustve been on a different bus...where the hell was I?? Brilliant stuff :)
The ageless wonder, Timothy B. Schmit. Saw him do an even better version of this classic on Mon. 12/7/09 at Portland's Aladdin Theater. The band he's assembled for this west coast tour is every bit as musically talented as The Eagles. Everywhere one looked in the audience you saw tears of joy at the sound that was coming off that stage. No man should be able to sing like that at age 62!
Richie Furay is definitely the one in the black cowboy shirt. He looks the same as he did the first time I saw them in concert in St. Louis around 1975. Awesome video !!
edward wright I feel lucky I never really bought any albums I had 4 older siblings so I just borrowed theirs, I just had to make sure I put them back in the right place !! :) great memories love them !!
Seems like their albums were frequently passed down from older to younger siblings, parents to children, cousins. Aunts uncles etc. Good songs encourage that sort of thing...
I also love the thank you nods and personal points of satisfaction in the faces of the players. Tim nods a thanks to Richie and Paul smiles it up when Tim delivers. What an incredible group of artists who have survived the tides of pop culture, music industry b.s. and economics and the personal stuff. If the Pentagon and the Military Industrial Complex had to endure this kind of scrutiny and budget cuts and these guys were given free access the world might be a better place.
No one sings harmony like this any more--except for CSN (who helped give life to Poco through their Buffalo Springfield lineage) and America. Awesome tune and perfect performance.
I was at work at a terrible job to the east of Houston one day. They had me making glasses in an un~airconditioned optical lab up stairs above their optical store, I won't tell you the name of the place but it started with a T and ended with an O . I was making glasses for people(optical) & I was listening to the local Houston fm station while I was working and the I think the Eagles were playing in town that night, anyway they had Timothy B in the studio talking to people on the telephone. I walked over to the phone and dialed the number and to my surprise didn't get a busy signal, the phone started to ring. It rang about 10 times and Timothy B. answered the phone! I was shocked that I didn't get a busy signal in the first place and triple shocked when he answered the phone and had no idea what I was gonna say so I just asked him " Why did you leave Poco?" He laughed and told me that the Eagles had called him with an" offer he couldn't refuse" . I chatted with him for a couple of minutes and thanked him for taking my call and he took down my address and mailed a black and white photo to me that he had signed. I like the Eagles ok but I love Poco music a lot more. anywho that's my Timothy B story.
@@markshepherd9133 I never got to see Timothy live, saw a version of Poco in Houston once and they were excellent, but I have to agree, the Timothy Poco albums are great.
This is my favourite Poco song (or just plain all-time favourite song) performed by my all-time favourite Poco line-up. Does it get any better than this.? Jeeez I only wish I'd been there.
I think Tim is free to pursue anything individually he wants. I think he's almost finished with a new solo album himself. I can't wait til it's released.
TBS has earned a reputation as the finest Rock Bass player in the world. Check the guitar mags, you'll see I'm speaking the gospel. With that rep, TBS pretty much does as he pleases when he pleases.
You might want to check those dates. Timothy B. Schmit replaced Randy Meisner twice - as a member of Poco in 1968 and as a member of the Eagles in 1977. The Eagles broke up in 1980 and reunited in 1994, again with Schmit as their bassist. He is still an Eagle.
Since I asked that question, a pickin up the pieces vid from Stagecoach 2009 has appeared on youtube. At the beginning, Richie intorduces George G and then George sings. So that means all the original members plus Paul, Jack and George L were on stage together! When Poco appears with the Little River Band and America both of those bands bring Rusty on stage during their performances. I've been told when Richie pops up unannounced, they bring him out and mention his being the R&R HOF. Kewl huh?
Rusty, Timothy, Richie, Jimmy, Paul, & Jack all on stage together! Who was playing drums? George has been appearing on a very limited basis. I'll bet that was a great evening of music and memories. The flow of energy WAS SO FINE.
Timothy asks Paul what key they are in 1:07. I saw Don Henley on the Hell Freezes Over DVD turn to the percussionist to get the beat on one song. A lot riding personally and professionally in both performances. People are people even with success and big bucks. I love the Stagecoach performances as much as I love Poco Live at the Belcourt Theater Reunion DVD in Nashville.
Hey Kitnewell...true, Paul is not a founding member. But neither is Tim! Randy Meisner was the original bass player; bolted during Pickin Up the Pieces. Tim was not a part of that; he joined after that first album. But Paul and Tim are part of what many consider the 'definitive' Poco; the 'Good Feelin' To Know' years. Jimmy didn't play on Good Feelin;. Richie didn't play on Keep on Tryin'! but he surely knows it here! Fascinating history, this band. A Super Group, RRHOF worthy.
Tim was not an original member of Poco. Randy Meisner was, but left during the recording of the first Poco album. Tim replaced him for the 2nd album. Randy also was the original bassist for the Eagles, then after the infamous fight with Frey on the Hotel California tour, quit. Eagles recruited Tim from Poco in '77, and so he again replaced Meisner in a band. Poco, the original band, reunited for a short time in '89; Meisner was again in Poco, and had a top 40 hit for them, Nothing to Hide.
Everytime Poco takes a new direction or shows a new influence, the next Eagles album mirrors that change. Trace it down through their history, you'll see I'm right. Listen to the Common Thread Eagles tribute album, The country artists' arrangements make the Eagles songs sound more like Poco songs! However, Clint Black's Desparado is true to the original and wicked good!
That would be Paul Cotton: guitarist and vocalist with Poco since 1970. Jim Messina is the guy on the left in the black cowboy shirt doing backup vocals. You're shocked? Let's see what you're up to when you are 65. Maybe he doesn't have his hair, but he's got his mojo.
He is the best ❤
This is superb having Richie, Timothy and Jim back up there. How about a thumbs up for Paul Cotton 👍
