This brings up a good point. I got ashamed at some point of key centered, major scale based soloing, because I heard so many of the people I look up to talk about playing the changes. It’s still good to use a key centered approach at times. The exceptions are when you have an “outside” chord. You have to at least speak to the outside note that it contains. Like when you have a dominant, major III chord when the three is usually minor. Better highlight that major third.
Pretty cool when you’re playing quietly in the kitchen on the THR while the family’s still asleep, and a new Corey video pops up. Saturdays rule. Thanks Corey!
@ congrats! for me it was a game changer. Still love my tube amps, but I can play so much more often, and virtually anywhere. It’s an amazing tool. Hope you love it.
Thanks Corey! Trusting our ears is so critical in improvisation. A lot of focus on triads out there lately. Which is great but you are spot on with the major scale as a more melodic option. Every arrangement is different and these are all excellent tools. Again, thank you!
Thanks so much! I’ve recently started doing this more and even switching b/t triads and scales for different parts of songs. Intro, solo, putto, etc. It helps massively especially when playing in a trio environment. Keeps it fresh for the audience too!
I frankly only use triad chunks to spice up my lines, and for barre chord substitutions. I rarely think in terms of triads while single note soloing; they don't sound quite right to me when just using by themselves. Just imo.
I find that the "major scale" gets a stupidly "bad rap" from esoteric jazz snobs, theory shunners and metal heads who possess an unnatural aversion to the MOTHER of all scales and ALL music theory. the MAJOR scale. before there were chords or anything, there was the major scale. it is in fact the basis of everything. (in western harmony anyway.) Every thing.
Man. RHANK TOU SO MUCH. I'm a drummer, but get more work on guitar (ruthmn mainly) In a group now that's got a lot of work next year and I'm I'm rythmn and lead duties so this type of shit really helps. The way you come across is aesome, friendly and no ego. Again, cheers man.

wow....thanks.
Very bold of you to say, and I belief this is verbatim, “I, Corey Congilio, detest all shreddy players, and wish to physically fight them.”
