I remember when I got Demon's Souls. I randomly stumbled upon some 480p preview footage of a game I had never seen before, but it looked AWESOME, the dark gritty world, thoughtfully paced action combat, I was all about it. I ordered the Japanese version because it released 8 months before the NA version, the translations were rough (but funny), and other than what I saw in that brief video I didn't know what to expect. Demon's Souls beat me down, over and over again. I learned, I overcame, and got beat down a lot more along the way, but it was so damn rewarding unlocking that new zone, or killing that scary boss. Nobody I knew was aware of the game at the time, so it felt like uncharted territory and I loved it.
While the sense of mystery and discovery won't be the same the second time, I'm looking forward to going back to Demon's Souls and showing the Adjudicator, Allant, and all the other bosses that slapped me around a thing or two I've learned in the past 11 years.

I never actually finished Demon Souls, but I never played it until about 5 years ago in the first place. I think I quit at about the time you fight the flame-demon or whatever it was.
I have finished Dark Souls 1, most of 2, all of 3, and got Sekiro 100% done. So this remake has a lot of potential to keep my interest so I can actually finish a version of Demon Souls.
This is another good reason for me to actually get a PS5, as I skipped the PS4 (have a PS3 though). Since Bloodborne actually bored me pretty immediately when I played it somewhat recently on a friend's system, I'm hoping that I won't have the same issue with this remake.

Right now we got the human boss, gank boss, and monster boss, but giant kaiju boss would be so awesome with new and exciting possibilities. The fact I still remember which NPC you're referring to, what item he requires for that line to trigger, what level where to find it and more importantly what chain to break for it to fall so you can pick it up shows me how many times I did that small but endearing quest line. Amazing game.

I know it's an old video by now but your genuine excitement in the showcase reaction reverberated to me, someone who didn't get to play DeS in 2009, so well I teared up (twice!) It must have been surreal to get a game that has special place in your heart get the treatment that it did, as a flagship title of a new gen console no less!

As soon as i saw this trailer i was sold!, ill never forget trying to get through that first level thinking that it is the most difficult game i ever played at the time. Been a massive fan ever since, I found Bloodborne and the DS3 ashes dlc to be the toughest

Something to add to the "Things to fix" section: Added weapon effects (Scraping Spear, Bleed, etc.) proc-ing even if you dodge through it and it therefore doesn't hit you.

I actually played Demons Souls before I ever even knew what Dark Souls was. I'm beyond excited for the remake! Maybe I'll actually go finish the original/ start over in preparation.

Having played the game when it first came out and loved it, re: healing items, you have to remember that this was a transitional era. A lot of people were like me: we hoard EVERYTHING, and would try over to NOT use consumables, for fear that we'd need them later. Best example is one of my buddies playing Silent Hill 2, felt like he was near the final boss, so repeatedly tried to kill it with board-with-nail, thinking it wasn't the last boss; finally beats it, and the credits roll. So I think the hope was that people would notice healing items are easy to get and not worry as much about hoarding or save scumming, but many didn't notice.
I remember seeing the announcement trailer as well as a commercial on TV for this game and I was soooo stoked and in love, I got the game on release day at VGE and still to this day love it. It is one of my proudest platinum trophies.

He was saying his first time playing it he couldn't get anywhere and Sony dropped the ball on marketing. I honestly don't think he has a foot fetish at all. Out of all the female characters in the series only like 3 or 4 of them are bare foot. If characters like the Plain Doll or Arianna that have obvious sex appeal had been barefoot he'd be onto something.
Bare feet is a rather common literary device that is meant to symbolize innocence and youth. In Pricilla's case this suits her as she is depicted as kind and childlike.
Miyazaki is known for this kind of visual storytelling.

Dude, nobody in their right mind would even dare to skip the intro cinematic after booting up the game! After viewing it so many times, it's hard not to know the intro outright even with updated graphics.

The friend who got me into the Soulsborne series played them all with me backwards. When we got to Demon's Souls though, it was a blind playthrough for both of us. It was insanely cool running OG Souls blind after a couple hundred hours in the other games. It stands the rest of time, and OH MAN I can't wait for the remake!

Still a fun game though and there are some things I think it did better than the later games (atmosphere was great, level design pretty good too, and world tendency is a cooler mechanic than hollowing imo.)
I never played a souls series game, but I'm intrigued. I'm on PC exclusively so I will have to wait to rip and port the armors to Skyrim... uh I mean play it.
My Souls journey, in order of what I played first:
1) Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition (made it to Firelink Shrine and tried like hell to progress down past the skellies without realizing you could go UP, gave up on the series for about a few years)
2) Dark Souls 3 (stopped playing at Soul of a Cinder, didn't want it to end.)
3) Dark Souls Remastered - Loved every second of it (I learned I was supposed to try and Ring a Bell and that the first bell was UP, liked it much more this time)
4) Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin (playing this right now, early stages) love it, don't care what people say
5) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Hated it at first, but now I understand it. Just amazing. early stages...
Just finished Dark Souls 2 few months ago and It's great compared to what the critics say about it. Bonfire Intensity, dual wielding, build variety, weapons, spells. Enjoy, Bearer of the Curse.

This was the game that pushed me to buy a ps3 when it came out and I was in love. Everything about the game was fantastic, and the end-game honorable pvp battles were an experience of its own.

real quick, i love the healing grass.
I found myself extremely low on healing items when i first started to learn how to survive in this game. and it gave the feel of a hopeless survival mode. Trying desperately to hold on to what little grass i could obtain just to make it by two duds with halberds to find out i'm only half way to the boss. THAT was the most i had ever felt the atmosphere of a souls game and i'm so happy it was my first introduction all those years ago.
Loved world tendency, item and equipment encumbrance. Made me consider which gear to wear before exploring every level. Just perfect. Loved the dark moody atmosphere. I am gonna play the remake, Buepoint's work is top notch, but the atmosphere will be missed.
Welp, time to dust off the old Dragon Bone Smasher.
My favourite weapon along with the Hiltless (or the Uchigatana 'til you find the Hiltless). I also miss the gender exclusive armour sets, and even that the unisex sets, while some look pretty much the same (eg: Gloom and Brushwood), others look slightly different (eg: Mirdan, Chainmail) and while others totally different (eg: Fluted, Plate), whereas on Dark Souls, armour and germents look pretty much the same on both genders.

unfortunately i played demon's souls after i played the rest of the series and blood borne so I didn't get to experience how it was when it first came out i was spoiled by more polished gameplay of ds3 and bloodborne so i didn't have very much fun playing it i really think the remake could be amazing though.

Demon's Souls was my first Souls game. It made me fall in love with the Souls genre, which ultimately led to one of my favorite games on the PS4; Bloodborne. I fanboyed so hard seeing this trailer. I'm so happy that the rumors of a remaster/remake were true, and I'm so happy that Demon's Souls is coming back and people get a chance to play it again.
I'm so hyped for this and hope it'll release on PC, too (well, which isn't that likely for now). Loved the bosses in Demon's Souls and they really left an impression. And the boss arena's, the music, the Tower of Latria
I wanna be excited but if it's not coming to PC there's just no way I can be. Here's to hoping it does!

I fell in love with dark souls, so much it made me play every souls game from DS1 to sekiro. I unfortunately never played demon souls because i never had a PS3, but after this announcement I’m so excited to play this game that started the souls series.

I remember the first time I seen the intro for Demon Souls I was absolutely blown away, had chills running down my spine the whole time, then... THEN that big ass dragon comes up at the end and my fucking hype over loaded lol. I never actually got to play this game so I'm extremely excited to have it for ps5.

For a man who claims that the Nexus is his favorite hub, you seem to not get why it wasn't tedious to return to when Hubs like the Hunter's Dream were treated like the shit they were.
Item Burden was one of the mechanics that made returning to the Nexus functional for how leveling worked. If you have to regularly return to the Nexus because of item burden, then you have an incentive to make the action as efficient as possible, and interact with your spell merchant, the maiden in black, as well as make time for the other bookkeeping tasks like improving your weapon, or talking to NPCs. Removing Item Burden for modern convenience will make the Nexus more like the Hunter's Dream, as place that takes two loading screens to do stuff Dark Souls proved was possible to do with a simple menu at the bonfire.
but they don't have loading screens in the remake, we know from the game footage released. released after this comment though, so yeah.

I remember my brother bringing this home for me on ps3 for my birthday... man. What a trip it's been. So thankful i stuck it out and finished the game back then.
I've played through DeS probably dozens of times and it's one of my favorite games I've ever played, but if there are things they "fix" (Stockpile Thomas duping) without addressing the reason those were valuable (limited crystal lizard spawns? Who thought of that?), we're going to have some real problems.
I think losing levels to fall damage as a phantom or red signs would be regarded unfavorably now, and I can't imagine what sort of nonsense an Old Monk could get into today, but I honestly appreciate a lot of DeS cheese in a way I never would with other games. Maybe my fear is that devs will buy too much into the hype of the series' difficulty and remove a lot of the silliness. I liked stormruler knocking people off edges, scraping spear invasions, having a broken early weapon like the Crescent Falchion if someone knows where to look. There were so many goofy elements to the first game in an excellent series that were later scrapped in the name of realism or challenge and I just hope it doesn't lose its charm in a remake.
In short, the game has got a heart of gold and I don't want it taken.
My main use for the stockpile dupe was so I could pvp without having to farm grass. I would only use like 5 grasses per encounter, unless the other person was spamming them. Then I just went crazy with them and kept the fight going until one of ran out. Good fun
Totally agree. I've only gone through it a few times, but I do appreciate its weirdness. I'm guessing they're going to try to balance it for a new generation of players. Things are going to get nerfed and buffed, per the usual. And the old skips will go away, obviously.
You don't need to dupe. It's just convenient. It's actually not that hard to get a world to Pure Black and kill all the lizards for upgrade stones, before getting back to Pure White with Colourless+special Black Phantom+Final boss.

I totally agree on the Intro of Demon's Souls being the most powerful video game intro ever. I also find the soundtrack and the voice work and every little cut scene just perfect and the most memorable i can think of. It is super emotional, dark, dramatic and kind of vague and mysterious at the same time.
This got me into the souls series. I was really invested in the lore. And I love the penetrator sword even though it was shit. Looked awesome tho

I absolutely loved this. I have and always will be an absolute fan of the series. When you said “a good 85% of you haven’t played this” I was instantly just like. Yup that’s me haha but sadly I wasn’t ever Introduced too the series till DarkSouls 2 but from that point I put in over a solid 1,700 days combined between the DarkSouls series. When I did try to get a copy of it. It was almost impossible and when I did. The disc was shredded. So I am so aesthetic about this.

Potential spoilers;
I know you said you wanted to avoid spoiling too much, but I wanted to bring up some of the other weird stuff that I feel like you omitted.
- world tendency also affects the spawn of certain items and enemies, eg Makoto only spawns in pure white 5-2, whereas in pure black 5-2 you fight the phantom of the swordsman who wields it. It also opened up other passages that were previously closed, like the very first gate on the left hand side of the spawn in 1-1 where you fight Executioner Miralda and get the Brushwood set
- tendency can also he shifted just by doing something to restore life to another player, so beating the boss as a summon is one way, but Faith users also had the option of a spell that just straight ups revives the person who summoned you
- the game has a stronger rpg feel to it where each build has strengths and weaknesses. Heavy armor ACTUALLY had a significant effect on how hard you could be hit, increasing faith improved your magic resistance since Miracles were almost strictly healing and buffs so you could make a mage tank support / cleric build, dex increases your fall damage resistance, etc
- ENEMIES HAVE SPECIFIC RESISTANCES THAT ACTUALLY REQUIRE YOU TO SWITCH UP YOUR WEAPON TYPE AGAINST THEM. Eg, the miners in world 2 shrug off anything but piercing and the fire beetles at the bottom of the mine are weak only to blunt or magic
Those are just some of the things that stand out off the top of my head since it's been almost a decade since I earned my plat, but yeah I love every single one of those nuances
