How does a Water Softener REGENERATE?

  • Water Softeners regenerate the internal resin in order to provide several years of SOFT WATER. Most issues that can occur with a water softener are tracked back down to a water softener malfunctioning during the regeneration cycle. Signs to look for are:
Salt tanks with high water level/ overflowing water
    Salty-tasting water
Error codes on the display screen (if it has a digital display)
Water pressure reduction in the house
Yellow or black residue in the water
This video is on-the-field training for a team of new techs. The regeneration cycle is demonstrated on a Puronics Hydronex C Water Treatment system.

My system says “filter” on the screen. What does this mean? And how do I take care of it?

If your softener has filtration capabilities, the screen may show "Filter" on there, depending on the configurations. Nothing to worry about. Keep an eye out for "Call for Service" or "Service Error code xxx" (the "xxx" being a series of numbers..for example: "Error Code 205")- this normally indicates a problem or issue requiring a certified tech to go investigate.

My concern is that when my water softener regenerates once a week, it only uses 4 gallons. What possible reasons for this?

How much is the correct amount of water it should be using to backwash? I'd start there. Who manufactured the equipment? Check out their website, if there is one, and check for manuals and system details.
On a side note: how do you measure the backwash water amount? Collect it directly into an isolated container?

This system got my entire family sick. Took a lot of salt. No support

Sorry to hear about your family as well as the lack of support! All water treatment systems need routine check-ups and maintenance or they could cause some major problems and headaches. These systems have certified ratings specific for high efficiency when it comes to salt usage. It definitely sounds like your system was malfunctioning.
