Love the brick drive contrasted with the darker walk material. I am so glad you didn't make boxes around the plantings between the drive and walkways; I always think they are just obstacles for car doors and snow ploughs, but I wonder if the car door hits the retaining wall on the neighbour's side. All the lush green softens the space beautifully. Still not sure why you don't mulch to keep the weeding and watering down... Glad you reused the urns. The oval planting was a small touch, but so impactful. I'd love to see it all flowering again after a year's growth. You should do a whole series of revisiting previous projects :)
Looks lovely. I would never have thought to plant so much and never dreamed you could plant in winter! Looked fine in the spring but I would be too chicken to try it. I do wonder about the walkway from the sidewalk appearing to take you to the alleyway (where I think I saw trash barrels) then the sharp turn left to the door. If it were my house I would want to soften the turn. Would mean some of the plantings being shaved off their view from the interior, but I think an entrance is important and should have a graceful shape.
Lavender prefers well drained, poor soil and full sun - it’s a Mediterranean plant. Similar preferences for Echinacea to grow well. By contrast, Beech trees want moist, rich, acidic, non-compacted soil. Just because it sounds like it will be pretty together does not mean that all the plants will be able to grow well together or survive in that location.
You are right, but it does very well in the cloudy, rainy, Pacific Northwest. Beautiful fields of it over on Whidbey Island and a lot in yards here. Even did well out on the edge of my north facing, shady yard.
I dislike lavender, but I have Echinacea that crops up, grows and flowers in my yard in the shade of my beech tree. My mother also has lovely Echinacea and a lovely healthy Tri-colored Beech.
All of the south. The varieties there grow huge, with gorgeous, fragrant, cream colored blossoms the size of dinner plates. I was surprised when I moved from there to see them in Seattle, even on the downtown streets. Not the same varieties, but pretty nice. I bought a nice one for my sister’s yard there to bring in something reminiscent of our original home.
I had some service berry in my yard a few years ago and had to get rid of them since they attracted massive amounts of Japanese beetles. Live in Minnesota.
After watching a number of your videos. Question: why do you leave dirt showing? Why not use a natural mulch? Also, what is the zone that you are working in? Just curious. Thanks.
They leave dirt showing when putting in young plants rather than mulching because it encourages the plants to grow, covering the earth and eliminating the need for mulch. Much can deter their growth at times.
I don't understand the sense in obscuring the front door and steps with trees. That just draws one's eyes to the car parking spot more than the house itself. I would've put a paved walkway leading straight to the front porch and would flanked that pathway with plantings instead.
You’re so right. It looks horrible with the entrance blocked. You can delineate the walkway from the parking spaces with paving pattern or materials and give more separation from the neighbor.
They are from Canada. That’s really how they pronounce it there. They also said ‘proh-ject’ at the opening of the show. And if asked, I bet they would say they have a ‘shed-jule’ to follow for their ‘proh-ject’ that covers everything from ‘A to Zed’ ;-)
I don’t get that four guys have to collaborate on a design concept for this tiny space. Normally it takes only one, who can also do all the material selection and estimating. And the term “plant material” makes me cringe! 😬

Your planting instincts are good ... trust them.
A decorative gate would take care of the pathway issue. Quick fix.
