  • Hello everyone and how do you do?
A number of you have been asking me about colour deficiency and whether it would be a barrier to becoming a pilot. I asked an AME the question and this was his explanation. I hope it helps answer the very important question that is a big concern for some aspiring pilots/Air traffic controllers and other professions too.
I wish you the best in your quest to be a pilot- don’t give up.

I just did my class 2 medical two weeks ago and my AME straight up told me “you’ll not become a pilot” because I failed the Ishihara tests. Unfortunately in India we do not have the facilities to accommodate the alternative colour vision tests as it was a straight failure for me despite being seeing Green and Red quite well. Now I am currently planning on doing my Class 1 medical in the US under the FAA which allows me to under go the alternative tests and hopefully settle there working as a CFI. The last part of the video really cheered me up and gave me hope. Thank you so much Pilot Obet!

Excluding people from being commercial airline pilots on the basis of colour vision deficiency is dark ages stuff. The safety issue is whether someone can accurately interpret what they are seeing. In 21st century civil aviation, there is no safety-critical information conveyed by colour ALONE. That would be bad design. (Speaking of bad design.... PAPI is fundamentally flawed because it has a propensity to fail UNSAFE for all pilots of whatever colour perception 'status'.) There are thousands of pilots with colour vision deficiency out there who have 'clean' medical certificates on the basis of operational tests which demonstrate the ability to interpret information as accurately and quickly as pilots without any colour vision deficiency. And those pilots fly in and out of Hong Kong all the time.

@@cootamundraclinton434 I know- I put this post up in response to several people asking me the question. I decided I’d speak to a medical person to give the info. I know many people that are outside Hong Kong that operate with no problem 😊
