    Really well explained. I had feedback/unwanted noise on my jbl 305p Mkii 5 powered monitor speakers. Swapped the cables to balanced and it was so much better.

      If u don't already grab a power conditioner rack 😉🐼 you'll have crystal clean power and as a result better mixes and a safer setup for ur monitor against dirty un controlled energy 😉

    Great video information as usual Kett!
    I just wish you showed us the internals of the cables as well because, as a noob for cabling, all I know is that the balanced cabling is a stereo and an unbalanced connection is a mono signal connection. My question is;
    1. Does the balanced cable need to have 3-way connections (1 ground ; 2 audio L & R) for the ring and 1 for the tip? or
    2. Can you just use a MONO CABLE (1 ground ; 1 audio) and just jump the ring and tip all together?
    Because we all know that the Scarlett output (Left and Right) have mono signals right? It leaves me to think that if we connect BALANCED CABLES to a mono output(1 Scarlett output L or R) and mono input(1 Speaker L or R) which only connects the TIP and GROUND part of the TRS, then the RING side is left with no connection to both sides but "still helps" the signal to prevent the noise right? Like a noise gate?

    • @MichaelFrankNZ
      @MichaelFrankNZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A Balanced signal isn't stereo, it's two of the same signal, but one is inverted. That's why it needs 3 poles (tip, ring, sleeve). You can use a "mono" cable, but that is an unbalanced signal given that it only has one pole for audio (the tip) and one common ground (ring and sleeve are effectively joined). Additionally, while the signal out from the Scarlett is mono per channel, it's a 3 pole signal for Left and Right and if you look at any tear down video, you will see the 3 contact poles in the L and R output jacks, thus making it balanced or unbalanced depending on the cable you use.

    Are method 1 and 2 equivalent in terms of quality and interference protection?

    • @robchalmers
      @robchalmers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, both of those methods (1 and 2) are balanced connections which will offer the cleanest path for your signal. However, as with many things, the relative quality of the cables might make some difference. For example, a junky set of balanced cables may not perform as well as a good-quality set, regardless of which type of plug is on the speaker end of the cable (XLR vs. 1/4" balanced).

    Hi! Can we connect 1 Left and 1 Right from a pre-amp's OUT (e.g. from a stereo) to the 1 and 2 MIC inputs of the Scarlett 2i2 so that the signals are led to the speakers like in this video? Will the Scarlett act like a DI-box balancing the unbalanced signals from the stereo pre-amp?

    This is great! But here is my problem, I am using the 4th method. I have iLoud Micro Monitor. Great speaker, but there is no Aux or Headphone port. What I am doing I am using he Line 6 POD Go processor, when I connect the iLoud monitors to the Amp Out of the Line 6 Port, I can hear the amp, but when I connect my headphones to the Line 6, I still hear the amp, not the headphones. But I do have an audio interface, the Focusrite 2i2. I am going to see if this works.

    In case of Scarlett Solo: does the 4rd method allow connecting with only one speaker? The Scarlett Solo has only one pair of the Left-RIght line outputs, and from my understanding a cable like this will have 2 jacks and 2 RCAs which are for one speaker. What the heck? :D

    • @kettnercreative

      Yeah, that's normal. Any time you turn a pre-amp up past 8-9 out of 10, you'll notice that hiss. This is why people use a cloudlifter or other inline preamp for hard-to-power microphones.
