  • On The Spot Queen Rearing is a straightforward method of creating additional queens and nucs and in this 4th part, we're looking at whether the queens have mated successfully or not.

    Interesting to see what to do with the drone laying queen and the frames she is with.

    Why don’t you just go straight to 6 frame Nucs, rather than the extra step?

    can you become proficient in OTS if you don't view part 3?

    What is worring about the BS Nuc is That a flighty queen can drift off from one compartment to the other and the Drone breeder can end up killing the queen right queen compartment. One queen walk stright on to my hand when opend a nuc the other day. I am going to cover the top with thick see through plastic and use drawing pins to hold it on either side of the devision board some where on the hand holds area and will probably have some holes for them to access the feeder. I have found that the Drone Breeder queen will often disappear at a about the same as yours has do not know why. You give us a lot to ponder over Stewart. Thanks

      Hi John,
      Thanks for your comments. I can see what you mean about the queen possibly moving over and being killed. Currently the nucs are not supplied with any type of cover board but I know the guys at BSHoney are looking at ways of developing this. I looked for ages for the drone laying queen but of course they are generally smaller queens and so become almost invisible.
      We'll see if I can spot her next time!

      Stewart do you think she would be still large enough to be stopped by a queen excluder? Could you shake those frame through an excluder?

    Were you happy with the laying pattern Stewart? It looked quite spotty. Shame about the drone layer.

      Hi Pete,
      I'm going to keep a close eye on them, you're right it was a bit spotty, fingers crossed she settled down into a more consistent pattern over the next couple of weeks.

      The Norfolk Honey Company thanks Stewart. Thought my TH-cam was acting up again, I needed to replace a queen last Wednesday, so I pulled her and gave the the on-the-spot method a go. I checked the the marked frames this morning to see how things were going. Thy repaired all of the damaged cells, just like yours, and built QCs off the bottom row that had eggs. Today we transferred 19 Nicot cups to a bar frame. We are using the cloak board method for our stater and finisher hive. Fingers crossed.

    Three questions Stewart: 1. How does this feeder avoid drowning a lot of bee's, they have nothing that I can see to avoid drowning ?
    2. Why put the division board back in, unless it's to maintain spacing?
    3. Will this type of styrofoam hive work with Langstrof frames, if so where can I purchase one of these ?

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John,
      The feeder has a baffle to stop them getting into the syrup and the sides of the internal area of the feeder are rough enough for the bees to climb out I think. We will see and I'll let you know.
      I tend to lose things like the correx division board so for me putting it back in the hive keeps it safe, also it will hopefully prevent the bees from filling the gap with propolis.
      This particular hive is for the UK National sized frames but I think the guys at BS honey are working on other hive types.

    Stuart, great video again and i am about to split one of my 2 in 1 nucs, so really helpful info. One thing as you couldn't find the drone laying queen would it not have been safer to move the queen right colony to the new box in case you had the drone layer in the box? Does that not risk her killing the good queen or will her bees just kill the drone layer?

      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian,
      Thanks for commenting. I can't actually remember exactly what I did but it all worked out in the end and the queen right colony is about to go into a full sized hive.
