- Chiba-Makuhari, JAPAN - 1994 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Yuka Sato of Japan skated a near flawless program that excited the home audience and impressed enough judges to edge out Surya Bonaly of France to win the Free Skate in a 5-4 vote. By doing so, she would win her only World Title here. What I love about her straight line footwork here is the speed and flow she gets across the ice, unlike the overly complex footwork sequences these days that move across the ice with little speed and impact.

저요.피알못이 봐도 이분이 금메달 받을만했네요.
보날리는 그냥 점프만 하고 기계적임. 무빙에 예술성이 없음. 파워리프터는 무게만 많이치면 장땡이지만 보디빌딩은 그 심사종목이 다르지. 엄연히 사토유카 경연이 더 낫았다라고 생각함

전에봤던 흑인선수는 힘을 많이줘서 기계체조느낌이 조금나는데 이선수는 진짜 피겨를보고있단 느낌이 확 들어요
전 영상이 인종차별로인해 못땄다고 감정팔이하는거같은데
그걸로인해 열심히 연습해서 금메달 딸만큼 잘했는데 인종차별해서 메달 뺏은 선수가되버린 사토 선수도 안타까워요
일본 별로 안좋아하는 제가 봐도 사토 유카 이분이 더 우아하게 느껴지고 더 감동적으로 느껴져서 금메달 받을 자격이 충분하다 생각합니다 그 흑인선수 보다

피알못이라 보통 점프 뛸때만 와 대다나다 이러면서 보는데 4:05 이때부터 나오는 스탭? 할때 진짜 빙판위라고 믿기지가 않을정도로 몸이 너무 자유로움... 빙판이랑 거의 하나된 경지아니냐

2등 영상보고 왔는데 피겨 잘 모르는 내가 봐도 이분이 금메달 탈 만 했는데; 동작이 훨씬 자연스럽게 흐르고 안정감 있어서 보기 편함. 시상거부는 도리어 이 분한테 실례 아닌가;
자기가 딱 2등만큼 했으니 이제 노력한거맞으니까 칭찬만 받으면 되는데 굳이 인종차별이라고 해서 금 따고싶었나봅니다

Yuka landed more clean triples than Surya too, and based on the judging palate, most judges were European and leaning toward Surya. The fact that Surya lost the gold just shows her underdeveloped edge work and stability on the ice during this time.

Bonari always had this attitude which gave minus image even with her jump skills. You can even seen her while waiting when Yuka was skating. Yuka skated better in total!

When you look at Bonaly’s reactions after the program has finished, I think she had a feeling she wasn’t going to win the gold. Overall, I truly believe Sato was better. There was no real controversy here, in my opinion.

Yuka's skating skill is superior beyond comparison.
It's quite natural judges prefer this performance.
Yuka is not bad as a jumper either. 6 decent triples.
Surya is not a good skater whatsoever.
Surya could do what yuka does but yuka COULD never do what surya does. SHe can be a skater and a "jumper" while yuka is simply just a skater. Surya's performance that year was exceptional you do not have to drag her down just to put praise to Yuka

She two footed lutz, fell on the loop, underrotated a 3T with a floppy landing on the 3F, Yuka definitely deserved the gold here with so much edge work and fluidity. 6 triples too, Surya only did 4 clean ones
Fantastic, clean, and STRONG. I miss this era of skating.
Clean is not a word that would apply to Yuka's landings. She got a few clean at World's to redeem the one or two from the Olympics.

The truth is Yuka Sato performance was smooth. I liked her performance better. Surya Bonaly is great but Yuka was better. Both ladies were talented.

This deservedly beat Bonaly's lacklustre skate. Bonaly's program was a choreographic disaster (at least in 1993 she seemed to be making some effort to interpret the music), and she wasn't clean technically (two footed the first lutz, stumbled out of the loop and under rotated a few jumps). It shouldn't even have been close.
Delighted for Sato that she pulled this off; her speed, flow, edges and footwork are to die for.

She was the clear winner in my opinion, her program was cleaner than Surya’s, even though she’s amazing at her jumps. She speaks very good English as well

I'm here cause of radio labs. I understand their decision here. Poor Surya just didn't have the grace and flow. Maybe if she would have owned her style even more and changed the music, but they probably still wouldn't have given her the gold. I feel for her.

The real reason Surya lost was because she fell, fell out of two spins, and didn't have the difficult non-jump content in-between her jumps the way Sato had. If you become a skater, you'll realize how much more mastery of skill Sato displayed in her skating than Bonaly was capable of doing at this point in Bonaly's career. Bonaly, while still being distinctive and stylish, improved so much as she got older.
Surya got valid deductions. In this system, the one with the least amount of deductions wins (along with difficulties and the such). Surya's jumps were impressive, but her basics and spins needed a lot of work. Those things don't fall on artistry, they fall on technique. Whoever coached her did her a huge disservice in ONLY focusing on the jumps and not on "ground-based" techniques like spins or footwork. If she wanted to be a technician, she should've been technically great in all techniques including basics. As it is, it's impressive that she got silver on the power of her jumps alone
I always felt the music and choreography was not the best choice for her. Perhaps if her mother wasn't so involved things would have worked out differently.

May I say just three words ? SHE IS INCREDIBLE.
She spins and jumps almost as fast and high as Fumie Suguri from her golden years.
What got me more surprised was...almost all the audience at the place seemed to be giving her supporting cheers...
PS. I watched Surya Bonaly's performance, too. Not just beautiful, but she knows how to skate with elegance and speed.
Well, this olympics are held in Japan, so it's only natural for the crowd to cheer more since majority of them are Japanese. Your observations fail to take that into account. If that was held in France, you could bet that the Crowd would cheer for Bonaly more.

Wow. I'd seen the back story to this and was expecting something bad. I'm no expert, but this looked far better to me.
That speed!! Holy moly. She has amazing stamina and endurance
Yuka was a skater's skater and she absolutely had the performance of the night. I always loved her skater and was thrilled for her.
Yuka skated with more speed and flow than Surya. Less flawed too. Better carriage on the ice. Six triples, the same as Surya. Two triple loops, whereas Surya missed her one triple loop. Yuka deserved the gold medal.
Bonaly was great but Yuka seems to glide on the ice and she seems to embrace the music, not fight it like Bonaly. And ice skating is a lot like Ballet, it has to look pretty. Jumps and all are fine and they matter a lot, but it does have to look pretty.
First time to watch after 29 yrs..There's no doubt she deserved the gold..Still wonder why Surya thought she was robbed..
I think this is a long story. Surya has often been ranked 2 during the WC. She won the EC many times, and this time she felt she deserved gold with the absence of Oksana Baiul and Nancy Kerrigan.
I've watched both programms and I must admit u're right.
Of course, Surya has got better technical skills but figure skating is not only about technic.
Yuka's skating is smoother, and much more artistic. The end of her programm was brilliant, accelerating all the time, and her choreagraphy is undoubtfully stronger, with all these elegant arms movements and speed of foot.
This was very close in the end, and only one judge made the difference.
So I can understand Surya got the impression there was a conspiracy against her for not giving her the gold medal.
But she should not have taken her medal off, especially in Japan, where respect is so anchered in tradition. And not in front of a Japanese crowd who cheered up their champion...

とにかくスケーティング技術が優れていた。
伊藤みどりさんがアンコールで３Aを含む
ジャンプを観客から求められるのに対して
佐藤有香さんはストレートラインステップで
観客に応えていたのが印象的だった。
この世界選手権では、ほぼジャンプミスなく
伊藤みどりさんに次いで日本人２人目で
優勝できたのが凄く嬉しかった。

Yuka's skating is absolutely first rate all the way! Her skating is light and airly as well as simply breathtaking all wrapped up in one!

Do you think sato got the same level of difficulty as surya? The technical marks margin should be wider, and surya presentation marks were at 5.6/5.7 when competing against oksana Nancy and Lulu, how the hell does that mark goes down, when in the olympics both sato and bonaly got similar presentation marks, furthermore, sato skated way better in the olympics but score better in the worlds which held in her home country? What a shame and idk why would you think sato should win, 2 triple lutz and 2 triple triple jumps, couldn’t beat 0 triple triple and 1 lutz, and Santos repetitive triples was just sal and loops while surya was doing lutz, both lack one kind of triples, so technically surya should be at 5.9 and sato at 5.7, for presentation, since both score similar in the Olympics, I think at most sato outscore her by .1 that is definitely robbery
@punchingkwan3052 Bonaly set up an extremely difficult technical routine but did not fulfill it.
She almost fell and touched the ice with her hands.
But that's it.."technical "....just technical without fulfilling her attempts along with a super horrible artistic program.
You only get little additional points for being technical.
I mean every little margin does help but when you make a mistake like that ......the technical program is not worth attempting.
Not to mention she totally ignored or was not able to be artistic with grace.
SORRY BONALY DID NOT DESERVE THE GOLD.

@@jy-no4vqGreat point there! Yuka landed 6 triples while Surya only had 4 clean ones. Szewczenko should have gotten silver, her program was very well choreographed and difficult. Surya should have gotten bronze.

it's ridiculous that was even that close.......... yuka was amazing! syria made at least 3 technical mistakes and she has no artistry whatsoever........ yuka's footwork and jumps, along with her expression should have won this title by a lot more than it did........ go yuka!!!!!!!

Yuka was just so graceful. When she skated, everything just flowed perfectly. Other skaters got points for doing cheap tricks... Yuka really showed the true artistry that goes into it. It's more than just a sport and requires more than brawn.

what really annoys me about this comment section are the double standards. People think Surya deserved the title, and think her not getting it was racist (bullshit, if you ask me), but what's so NOT racist about denying the efforts of a more artistic Japanese skater? Also, if you ask me, I think both Skaters deserved their places. Surya worked to get to 2nd place, and Yuka was meant for 1st place. Yuka's Technical may have been slightly lower than Surya's, but artistry was and still is a thing looked for by the judges, making her more rewarded. Surya's Technical, although it had a couple of faults, was above Yuka's, but with as much technical needed to come as much artistry. Also, I feel people wanted Surya to win 'because she's black, and black people deserve a title in sports history' - they actually have loads, and also another reason 'Well, she was the only black skater. Imagine the prejudices she would have faced as the ONLY black female skater, there. Because of this, we need to reward her more for battling through hate and prejudice' - The real world does not work like that. Both skaters were prestigious in their own ways, but Yuka, that year, deserved the title, based on the judges' standards. It's in the past. Anyway, Surya was a European Champion. I'm happy for both of them, and people should consider the prejudices a Japanese female would have faced, as well as a Black Woman's.
Plus people WANT to believe that something should have happened, based on the relation they have to the issue. All people who hate on either/both skaters need to sit back and think what it's actually like to skate. Hey, I have it the worst, considering I'm an artistic roller skater! So I have heavier skates than Ice Skates.

As much as I am a fan of Surya, Yuka really should have won this thing way more convincingly. Surya's (flawed) triple-triples just weren't enough to overlook the messiness and multiple small errors littered throughout her program. Surya's 1993 free skate could have beaten Yuka here. But here in 1994? Yuka all the way.

Wow radio lab was biased as fuck. Look you can swing either way. If you think figure skating should be mainly about artistry than Yukasato clealrly wins. Now if you think it should be more about technical skills, fancy jumps. Than there is a case for Sara but Yukon with no falls still can be justified to win. So all in all. Yuko. Cut the racist card people. Not this one
+Burg Which Also, people forget that there is more to the technical side of skating than just the jumps. Yuka's edges, footwork and choreography were better and more difficult. Yuka did double her toe-loop, had a wild landing on her flip and did not have any triple-triple combos, so her technical marks were justifiably lower. Maybe you could argue 5.7's were more appropriate than 5.8s.
Artistically, it isn't even a question. Yuka comes out on top. If she had skated a clean short program at the Olympics, she could have won that event as well.
That being said, I won't pretend that Surya being black had no impact on her career at all. The difference is that in these high profile defeats, someone usually skated better. There's no card to play.
I did not hear the beginning of the Radiolab report, but technically, it was balanced. However, overall, the tone was that this gold was stolen from Bonaly. I don't really know much about skating, but it appears to me Sato's win can be justified. I do know a lot about journalism, though, and there was a biased undertone. Somehow, they made the judge they interviewed sound really petty and nasty. But, in fairness, I did not hear the report from the beginning. I have heard over the years, though, that skating is a pretty "corrupt" sport with some questionable scores over the years. Interestingly, when I heard the Radiolab story, I was rooting for Bonaly and glad she protested when receiving her medal. Now that I saw it in person, she looked like a poor sport.

It's pretty Obvious that the Judges at that time prefer WEAK Ice princess that have slim body with no Muscle definitions. Majority of the Critics and Professionals have been criticizing these judges for their bias scoring.
Apparently "artistry" only consist of young women who dance around looking elegant and WEAK. While Strong women who shows different mood and artistry are not considered artistic at all.
Autumn Shag Artistry consists of gracefulness, one quality Surya was lacking in. If we want to talk about her skill, she still falls flat with her messed up jump, sloppy footwork and terrible sequence. Yuka definitely deserved to win this gold medal.
