@@KaboombooVery true. It was very unsportsmanlike for Surya to do that. As much as I am a fan of Surya, Yuka really should have won this thing way more convincingly. what really annoys me about this comment section are the double standards. People think Surya deserved the title, and think her not getting it was racist (bullshit, if you ask me), but what's so NOT racist about denying the efforts of a more artistic Japanese skater? Also, if you ask me, I think both Skaters deserved their places. Surya worked to get to 2nd place, and Yuka was meant for 1st place. Yuka's Technical may have been slightly lower than Surya's, but artistry was and still is a thing looked for by the judges, making her more rewarded. Surya's Technical, although it had a couple of faults, was above Yuka's, but with as much technical needed to come as much artistry. Also, I feel people wanted Surya to win 'because she's black, and black people deserve a title in sports history' - they actually have loads, and also another reason 'Well, she was the only black skater. Imagine the prejudices she would have faced as the ONLY black female skater, there. Because of this, we need to reward her more for battling through hate and prejudice' - The real world does not work like that. Both skaters were prestigious in their own ways, but Yuka, that year, deserved the title, based on the judges' standards. It's in the past. Anyway, Surya was a European Champion. I'm happy for both of them, and people should consider the prejudices a Japanese female would have faced, as well as a Black Woman's. Plus people WANT to believe that something should have happened, based on the relation they have to the issue. All people who hate on either/both skaters need to sit back and think what it's actually like to skate. Hey, I have it the worst, considering I'm an artistic roller skater! So I have heavier skates than Ice Skates.
@@DistrictPhive There were 7 European judges, one of them being French. There were only 2 Non-European judges and only one of them was Asian - Being Chinese, so everything was against Sato’s odds. There wasn’t even a Japanese judge. Sure, the Japanese crowd may have hyped her up, but you must understand everything comes down to the judge.
I think this is a long story. Surya has often been ranked 2 during the WC. She won the EC many times, and this time she felt she deserved gold with the absence of Oksana Baiul and Nancy Kerrigan. I've watched both programms and I must admit u're right. Of course, Surya has got better technical skills but figure skating is not only about technic. Yuka's skating is smoother, and much more artistic. The end of her programm was brilliant, accelerating all the time, and her choreagraphy is undoubtfully stronger, with all these elegant arms movements and speed of foot. This was very close in the end, and only one judge made the difference. So I can understand Surya got the impression there was a conspiracy against her for not giving her the gold medal. But she should not have taken her medal off, especially in Japan, where respect is so anchered in tradition. And not in front of a Japanese crowd who cheered up their champion...
I appreciate your opinion. With all due respect... Skating is a LOT more than just jumps. Jumps are a LOT more than just squeezing rotations in and force-landing them. I can tell you that there was no controversy about Yuka's win that night whatsoever. The controversy, instead, was more about the judges being too generous with Surya, perhaps because she had been second in the world in 93.

They were in Japan tho...
First time to watch after 29 yrs..There's no doubt she deserved the gold..Still wonder why Surya thought she was robbed..
그 흑인분께서 치기어린 행동을 하신거같네 이분 진짜 잘하셨는데
An absolutely exquisite performance.
Apples and oranges. I think they both skated beautifully.
I can't believe how little Michelle Kwan is!
Fantastic performance. She speaks English so well, too.
佐藤有香さんがこんなに素晴らしいスケーターだったとは!!!
그냥 존나잘하네.........
She deserved to get gold
I appreciate your opinion. With all due respect...
Skating is a LOT more than just jumps.
Jumps are a LOT more than just squeezing rotations in and force-landing them.
I can tell you that there was no controversy about Yuka's win that night whatsoever. The controversy, instead, was more about the judges being too generous with Surya, perhaps because she had been second in the world in 93.
And second in 1995, too, when British judge just robbed Syria. The only 5,6 marks from GBR, when the other 8 gave her 5,8-5,9
@@aleksandaraleksovski2423What matters in the 6.0 system was the placements. e.g., A 5.5 may be a 1st place mark while 5.8, 3rd and so on.
@detectiveonline Rules were different 17 years ago. Hello! Sports advance, rule change. Heck 17 years before this performance, women were bairely doing 2 triple jumps. You cannot apply today's standards to the past. Back in 1994, this was difficult. The footwork Sato did moved across the diagonal twice as fast as the footwork done these days. You try replicating it successfully, then we'll talk about lack of difficulty.
보날리 너무 억진데? 뒷구르기 하면서 봐도 이분이 훨 잘하셨네
Absolutely this was a very well-deserved win! The presentation and footwork and edge jumps were far superior to any other skater.
UKA went for utter perfection. She's always so kind and very sweet.
