    I dont know much about Skating. But i do know this girl is the ONLY girl that could do a backflip onto only one foot. And what do they give her in return, they banned the move. I love her heart SO MUCH! Because even after the banned it. She did it again anyway!!! Even if it hurt her score. I LOVE THAT!!! I dont know why they didn't give her a gold medal in this video. But i do think she deserves it. You can clearly see that she KNEW she was the best by her emotions. At least she stayed... If i was that young and put in the same situation, id have probably just walked off. Either way! On that day, she didn't need gold to be number one. She was number one without it. Great job!!!❤❤❤ Also as far as the backflip goes, the only reason i believe they ever had banned it to begin with is because you could land with only one foot. Well she did. Like i said, NUMBER ONE!

      chinafakeeggs your the fool, that was not a tantrum. At the end of the day she was the one out there alone in that sport hearing day in day out everybody describing your competition as delicate, soft, and angel like while they describe her as exotic, catlike, and a jumping bean. That would get to most normal people eventually. And no she never won OG but she did medal as an Olympian and also was a multi French and European Gold Medal Champion. Success that most of those girls could only dream about.

    Figure Skating judging had been corrupt for years and Surya Bonaly knew she deserved to win gold. Why because she chose to express her distaste for corruption is she showing unsportsmanlike conduct but in 2002 when the Canadian pairs figure skaters challenge their silver medal it was okay? Which, lead to the whole judging system being exposed for the corrupt system it had always been. Maybe if they had taken the time back in 1994 to look into the scoring instead of bashing Surya and her Mom for being ungrateful, outcomes of World Championships and Olympics would have been different.

      Robert Lazenby The thing that I really dislike about today's system is that it is ONE score. ONE. So if there is something going on behind the scenes, which there usually is, you have no way to pinpoint it. The new scoring system protects the judges' asses. At least with the old one, if there was a problem they could find it. It's sad and it makes figure skating less enjoyable. I have to grab a calculator now to figure out what my fave's score is.

      All she did was end up hurting herself by acting on her emotional meltdown. No one here certainly had any sympathy for her . How the Canadians handled it was the best way to do it. plus there was hard proof that the French judge was being paid off that made it impossible to ignore. Had there not been any evidence, her vote would have stood and they still would have a silver medal

Whether it's unconscious or conscious racism, it exists and it does real damage to innocent people. My heart goes out to Surya. I think she was very courageous to give a silent protest to what was likely a biased (either intentional or not) panel of judges. It helps bring attention to this problem and it took great courage.

    There are plenty of examples where Surya lacked artistry especially pre 1994 worlds. She was incredibly focused on athletic ability and openly disagreed with what the judges wanted in a figure skater.
    That being said, her SP and FS in 1994 worlds absolutely without a doubt was better overall than Yuka Sato's. She had a 3 jump combination in a program that was undoubtedly more difficult than Sato's. And I think what really sealed it is she displayed a much better connection and flow with the music than Sato's, especially when it went into Vivaldi's winter. Surya knew she was supposed to win and while everyone likes to point out "oh but it was so close. Oh but it was because of the Finnish judge". No. It wasn't.
    She SHOULD'NT have been close. Her scores for artistry should have been way higher than Sato's in this particular competition. I will not be one of the many who harp on her 1998 olympic backflip being a "snub" but 1994 world's? She was cheated. Absolutely cheated. This was the only black woman at an elite level during this time post Debbi Thomas and the judges absolutely were biased when scoring artistry.
    People will say she was ungrateful, bratty, crazy, whatever. I think she knew she was the best that day and she knew no matter what it just wasn't going to be good enough for these judges. She displayed the exact criteria they preached and still got unfair scores.
    I watch this and think about how no one but her mother was on her side that day. Criticize Suzanne all you want but she raised her daughter to stand up for herself even when everyone was against her.

    • @tianzhonglong3373
      @tianzhonglong3373 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Imo no, Surya's performance in the FS wasn't better than Yuka's. Her spins were off centered and slow, she planted her hand on the 3Lo, with some other shaky landings in the 3F + 3T. Granted, Yuka also had a tight landing on her 3Lz and 3F but the landings were generally better. Her SS wasn't nearly as fast or connected as Yuka towards the later half of the program, so I'd disagree with the artistic impression part. Her technical scores WERE better than Yuka's, but definitely not on artistry.
      The real robbery for her was 1993 Worlds, not 1994.

    I love how so many took PopSugar's biased video where they went with a conclusion first and then twisted selective facts to serve that conclusion rather than let the facts naturally lead to a conclusion. It's obvious many people who think Surya Bonaly was robbed really don't know much about skating and what makes it difficult and what is scored, and are not interested in informing themselves. Rather, they just want to support the idea she was robbed to feed their anger. This is a clear example of mob mentality. I agree that institutional racism is a real thing, but let's not ignore the facts that Sato did not rob Bonaly.
    Most people claiming Bonaly was correct in her bad sportsmanship (love that people are selectively applauding it when I bet if the situation was reversed, the same people would say Yuka was disrespecting Surya) are the same people who just blindly listen to something that so happened to agree with their politics/opinion but aren't actually informed. For those of you who are just going by the PopSugar video and think people like Dr. Stacey Patton, who I used to respect and follow until a few incidents revealed she's not very informed or thorough before she goes on her rants (that and her transphobic post), here is a post for you.
    First, what Surya did do well was incredible (double axel from stand still and that 3/1/3/2 combo). However, she really only had four clean triples in this routine, severely underrotated that last triple toe, double footed that first Lutz, fell on a jump, fell out of a spin, nearly fell out of another, didn't really hold her spins long, severely telegraphed her jumps, had no content in-between her jumps, was slow in her middle section, slowed down towards the end with messy and barely held spins showing fatigue and lack of endurance, and had a ton of posing on two feet doing essentially nothing with her blades (two big sections in a 4 minute routine to catch her breath) in this routine where she didn't skate. Those are all technical/athletic issues.
    There's more to athleticism and technical difficulty in this sport than jumps. This sport is ice skating where just standing still and being balanced on a quarter inch on metal in slippery ice requires tons of concentration, balance, and athleticism. So obviously, when a skater does more in the program, performs multi-directional skating, has transitions into jumps, does moves-in-the-field, and doesn't spend all her time standing on two feet to catch her breath for a good proportion of her program, the judges reward that in both the technical merit mark and presentation mark (which is more than just subjective artistry as it has itemized and very technical things the judges measure).
    Secondly, Yuka Sato performed six fully rotated triples compared to Bonaly's four. Her triple flip was messily landed but it was rotated all around and landed on one foot, unlike Bonaly's Triple Lutz, which was two footed. Two-footing is a big deal because a skater would fall out if not for putting the other foot down. Ignore the style and skin color of the skaters, and just watch the feet of both programs. Sato is doing a lot more content throughout the routine. She's on her deep edges (all skaters, especially world-class ones say that's the hardest thing to master), going in both directions (extremely hard and considered part of the technical merit mark), has a lot more one-foot skating, covers much more ice, skates a lot faster, and actually picks up speed at the end (where one's legs is extremely tired and sore as every skater who has skated in the elite level says). She also does a lot more in-between moves and more interesting and difficult things going into and out of jumps. That's technical difficulty that Bonaly does not display as she severely telegraphs into her jumps. Sato also had a much more difficult and much better executed footwork section where she was blazingly fast. She also had a lot more variety of spins, spun faster, and did them very cleanly in terms of positions and centering, issues Bonaly had.

    It's quite annoying to see all these non-skating fans here acting like they know what they are talking about after hearing a RadioLab episode that was narrated from Surya's point of view. Yuka was completely justified in her win here under the 6.0 system; had this been conducted under CoP the margin would have been greater due to the lack of quality in Surya's jump landings and difference in basic skating.
    It's also convenient that in their assessment RadioLab completely ignored both Debi Thomas (who was a much better all-around skater during her competitive days) and Midori Ito, whose technical content eclipsed Surya's in actual difficulty, technique, and execution. If people want to have a field day over skating politics/racism and the aesthetics vs. artistry debate Midori is a far better case study.

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But as a Japanese skater, Ito doesn't have the cache that comes with being black in a debate where the race card will be used to trump all, so they focus on Bonaly instead.

    The reference to her mother was due to Suzannes’s very bad reputation for tricks and poor sportsmanship. She fired Surya’s coach appointed herself coach and would tell Surya to throw in backflips during the warm up against other skaters, one time almost making Midori Ito crash.Suzanne was a sick and abusive woman who adopted Surya and enslaved her for her natural athletic talent to gain fame and money. Luckily Surya became an adult and emancipated herself from this sick demented Racist woman and moved across the world to Las Vegas. Surya fell in love and is married and coaching kids now happy and free.

    Le patinage n'est pas évaluer de la manière du judo ou du tennis, c'est un verdict peu objectif voire biaisé.
    Si j'aurai été Yuka Sato je ne me serai pas senti à ma place, j'imagine qu'elle-même a dû être surprise du verdict. Je ne me serai pas senti honnête envers moi-même en acceptant ce titre.
    Yuka Sato aurait dû offrir sa médaille d'or à Surya Bonaly et l'invité à occuper la première place sur le podium.
    En agissant ainsi elle aurait largement mérité son titre et aurait réellement été considéré comme la gagnante légitime mais à l'inverse en acceptant ce titre et cette médaille elle a valider la malhonnêteté du jury et à laisser dans l'esprit du publique non pas l'image d'une gagnante mais malheureusement l'image de celle qui n'aurait pas dû gagner.

    • @hermioneonice
      @hermioneonice 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Caitlin McMurtry No ties allowed. Back in 1994, each of the 9 judges would give skaters a technical and artistic mark. Skaters would then be ranked based on that total. As an example, the Chinese judge here gave Surya 5.8 and 5.7 for a total of 11.5. Same judge scored Yuka at 5.8 and 5.8, for a total of 11.6. This is where the the first place ordinal for Yuka and second for Surya came from. You can see all ordinal placements around 3:34 in the video. To make matters more confusing, ties (both skaters getting 11.6, as an example) were given to the skater with a higher artistic score in the long program and higher technical score in the short program. These days, it's a cumulative point system based on elements you do, so it makes things a little easier :).

      kolgar IMO, Surya should've done this in 1993 with Oksana...now THAT was a f**king robbery if I ever saw one. And I would've LMFAO'ed if Yuna had ruined Sotnikova's medal ceremony by "protesting" there. :D

    Bonaly should deserve to win but I know that it's not my business but I think bonaly really deserve the gold medal she's been working hard showing respect but some people didn't respect here that's just rude if I was here and all,this people boings me I would be so sad but I would ignore people doesn't appreciate me. Those people who's boing should earn respect that making bonaly 😭 hurt so try to be 👍🏻 nice. I'm only a 10 years old girl , I only notice the video on 2017. I hope that bonaly is reading this. Also those judges and I have something to right down to you bonaly your a great skater whatever people say to you bad ignore them I can tell by your heart ❤️ is pure and no one else can do that backflip and landed with one foot. It's quite entresting though and one more before I stop writing god gave you the back flipping because you are a special woman who has a great heart with starssssss👀🌌. Bye byeeeeee

    People there were no racism here! Go watch the two women's competition video and you will understand why Yuka was given first place. After watching both women compete i agree with the judges decision.
