The fact that there are so many ways to game the system and approach this boss fight speaks to how fun and free form this game was. Play it as intended, get the invulnerability by activating the panels up top to wail on him for a short time, play like a true gamer and go one-on-one and prove master, do something sneaky and cheap like this, or break any of the pillars and make the debris fall on him (my personal favorite). It was all so cinematic, it's something Kyle Katarn would do. I daresay that would be how I'd write it if I was making a movie based on this game.
I personally enjoyed the irony of defeating him with nothing but turrets, hovering sentries, and the flachette launcher. No lightsaber, no Force. Can't block everything. What was it that Desann said in their first meeting? "As a Jedi you might have proven a worthy adversary"?
Kinda hilarious that the lil blaster drone orbs which is considered to be some of the most basic training for younglings distracted em so badly enough to get constantly force pushed down so much XD gods I loved the Jedi Outcast series and Jedi Academy after this.
Something that'll always stay with me is the very first time I did this fight I won it by doing a backflip in such a way that it ended with me standing in front of him and then doing a backstab right into his crotch.
I have played this game like 20 times but I can't think of a way to beat that. I always try a backflip after the reborn die though, in both this and Jedi Academy. It has become a trademark, just to show off.
Heavy style is so slept on in both Jedi Outcast and Academy. Sure, fast style+force speed trivializes most encounters, but there's something about killing Reborn with one heavy swing, Vader style.
I always go red against reborn/bosses. In Academy Act 3 I go Force Rage Rank 3 and sidestep with the saberstaff. It's usually a one-shot without any risk. Unless your 10-second window runs out, then you're in trouble.
I remember one time I had an anticlimactic Desann fight. And it was not too long ago either! During the fight I jumped over him and sliced his head and was dead right then and there. Tavion gave me SO MUCH MORE TROUBLE then he did that run.
I've spent so much time on Jedi Academy that I keep forgetting that Jedi Outcast had an inventory system. I never made as much use of the turrets or seekers as I could have.
This is basically how I beat him in my no lightsaber, no Force playthrough. Except I was up top raining fire with the flachette launcher. Overwhelmed and demolished. Can't block everything.
Huh. It never occurred to me to do that. I always used Force Speed to turn Desann into a slowpoke and took him down with two heavy (red stance) top - down swings.
@@lanceislateagain My guess is they use Force Speed only at higher difficulty levels. I've always played on Padawan to spare myself from unnecessary frustration that comes with higher difficulties. 🙂
Frankly, while this really looked like a pragmatic, fast way to win, Jedi Knight series, pretty much like Soulsborne and other From Software games now, made you actually work for it. Like, if you tried making a cinematic, beautiful, long lightsaber duel, Desann easily won, even on the easiest difficulties. There was no way to prolongue the duel, because his AI was just that good, and he also had a few advantageous cards up his sleeve, like you couldn't have pushed him away, once he started choking you, or his heavy Vader-esque lightsaber style was much faster and nimbler than your typical Strong Style. So you yourself had to find other means to gain the upper hand and then USE said upper hand as quickly as possible to win this otherwise extremely OP enemy, which always looked cheap and anticlimactic, because otherwise, Desann wins, and you have to do it all over again.
I'm pretty sure he and Tavion both have a 4th and a 5th style that you can only get with cheats. One of them is a fast side-slash straight through your chest, which is how they kill you so fast.
I switched my lightsaber style to fast and used force speed to get my licks in. In and out until he died. I remember him being a tough cookie, but I was also super young. No clue you could drop the ceiling on him or activate the panels lol. Everyone beats him their own way.
