If I might share a tip:
My mom was sending all my boxes. I numbered them, and wrote the address on the mailing label and stuck it inside the box. Dont seal the boxes! Mom was able to add or subtract things for me before she sent them as needed. I also didnt put the label on the box, in case I needed to change my pickup location. I marked a calendar for her (she's a little older and asked for this) so she would have an idea of which # box to send on which date. Those were my latest dates. So unless I called her, she would ship by those dates. I ended up a week faster than planned, so we shifted the schedule a week, no biggie. Making resupply user friendly for those sending boxes is a little work upfront (just like making the actual boxes), but it will save you a ton of stress on the trail. I totally plan on doing this again for my thru in 22. -Dandelion

We get a lot of mail drop boxes at our hostel and if I could offer a little advice from what I've seen: people are sending themselves too much stuff. There's a lot of access to the supplies you need on the trail and that will save you a lot of money in postage. We do keep boxes for free.

Another great use for a bounce box (especially on a northbound AT thru hike) is to bounce extra or unnecessary gear and other items up the trail, for instance a cold weather sleeping bag, cold weather jacket, Q-tips, razors, &c. I knew one hiker who bounced electric hair clippers because he hated having long hair, so he'd bounce the box up trail and pick it up every month or so to give himself a haircut.

Thanks for the info! I’m working on planning my resupply boxes as I know I’ll need to use them. Beings vegan on trail will be a bit harder to resupply in some small towns so I plan on using resupply boxes to help with that. OK, you just gave me a Merry Christmas without knowing it - I rewatched some of the 66 videos today - loved the "quick" trip north, out of GA into NC, through the Smokies, Rocksylvania, through the Greens and Whites, meeting Fresh Ground, the view of Katahdin from the bridge (the "OH MY GOD" started the tears) skipping segments up the mountain until the final approach, kissing the sign and your quick review and the proposing (the tears kept flowing) - you and Fresh Ground have inspired me to be available between Albert Mountain near Franklin NC up through Damascus VA for some trail magic this spring and early summer, especially coming out of the Smokies between Davenport Gap going under I-40 before Standing Bear Farm Hostel - any comments on things to have would be appreciated - can't cook like Fresh Ground but fruit, candy, soft drinks, beer, a place to dump trash are all types of things that are doable.

Owning an outfitter you are correct it is uncomfortable when we see people come and use the lounge to empty their resupply boxes and then leave us their empty boxes. Shoes clothes etc totally doable but we do understand and it’s their choice to send themselves boxes. We still except all hiker boxes.

Great Tips! 👍 I just recently heard about the bounce boxes and that sounds like a good idea. Also on my SHT hike I packed too much food/snacks in the resupply boxes and ended up with extra. Two guys that I hiked with for a couple of days were running short on food and they were glad to take some of mine. btw if you ever come back up to the SHT maybe with Krissy I'll hike with you for part of it. My wife would like to do a few days there.

Nice video but, If you're going on a very long hike and cant get to your pickup location within the 2-3 weeks (they'll hold it for you), you'll need someone you can trust to send these boxes for you on cretin dates ie.. 3 weeks from now (on blank date) send box 1 here, 4 weeks from now (on blank date) send box 2 on and on, etc., etc.. For example my local post office, once a box comes in, they write the date and in 3 weeks its returned PERIOD. They say there's no room to hold things longer. You can call the poster master of the post office and ask them about their specific post office rules. ALSO, some places will charge a fee for holding your package for you AND charge an extra searching fee if you dont have ur name on all 4 sides.

My biggest question is how often to resupply on the CDT? I want to maximize my trail time with very few zero days. With the PCT and especially the AT, this is a no brainer ... resupply every 3-5 days. More towns along the way that are close with easy hitch hiking, and you don't need to spend a bunch of time off trail getting resupply and recharging batteries/power banks. But with the CDT? Not as many towns, and I suspect getting to these towns, taking care of business, and getting back ends up taking much of your day. I would prefer not to carry 7 days of food, but I also want to finish the 3100 plus mile through hike.

Biggest reason not to send yourself boxes all along the trail is you don't know what you're going to be sick and tired of eating by week 3. If you want to plan and send the first couple weeks and maybe some spots up the trail where there isn't a good place to resupply that fine. But other than that, hit the stores.

You should use priority regional boxes ( a type of flax rate) vs the standard flat rate/priority boxes. The prices is usually about half the cost. You have to go to USPS website to get the regional boxes. Also, if you ship enough boxes, you will eventually have issues and loss a box.
Overall, I'd probably do about 50/50 if I have someone who doesn't mind doing the shipping and can handle the challenge
