What food am I taking on my Appalachian Trail 2022 Thru Hike?

  • We'll talk about my initial food supply for my thru hike and my resupply plan for the entire journey.
    I have a hard time eating during the first few days on trail. For the most part, I'm just not that hungry so my meals have to be very appetizing. The little that I do eat has to pack a bunch of nutrition into a small amount. I know the thru hiking community likes to focus on calories but we also have to pay attention to nutrition as well. I believe I have a good balance between traditional thru hiker food and maybe not so traditional that will give my body what it needs to be successful in meals that are full of flavor.
    I researched several articles on resupply boxes and decided to go off of the recommendations from a thru hiker poll a few years ago. I've selected six towns that I'll be using for that and we'll take a good look at one of those boxes.

    Dietitian here: "good" nutrition looks completely different for everyone. Of course there are guidelines for micro and macronutrients, but they are just a jumping off point. Every body has unique needs and what works for one might be completely wrong for another. (You can in fact be healthy and not eat fresh fruits and vegetables everyday!) You are doing a fantastic job in paying attention to what YOUR body needs, especially when challenging it with something so physically strenuous. This looks like a great combination of foods to energize your hikes!

    Super awesome with the straws! and just a lighter to reseal. Nutritional yeast flakes are top tier and I'm very happy you are bringing attention to a super nutritional and delicious food :D

    Great video Greg! I do love me some nutritional yeast! I make a batch of nutritional yeast, hemp seeds and seasonings like onion or garlic powder, salt and pepper and use this on potatoes, rice and pastas! So delish!! I'm excited to watch your hike and I'll be on the lookout for my Melenzona!!! 🤣

      I like your seasoning idea and I may have to steal it! I've become a fan of the yeast in a short time.

      @@gregmortonoutdoors oh for sure I do about 1/2 cup hemp seeds, and maybe 1/4 Nutritional yeast and then just the other seasoning to taste and it comes out great. Almost mimics parm cheese. (Almost lol)

      Oh and your seasonings in straws is a great idea that I might be adapting

    How do you get spices into the straws? Thank you for sharing. From northern Kentucky

    • @gregmortonoutdoors
      @gregmortonoutdoors  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I melted the one end, scooped with the open end, then melted it. The spices were either in a decent sized plastic container or a bag, not in a typical spice jar from the store. One thing that didn't work out was the writing on the straw. It wore off, so I had to guess on the spice a few times. I'd recommend using a better way to mark them.

      It's a Melanzana micro-grid. Yes, they are very comfortable and just about the only thing I wear in the winter.
