Not just because I am Italian, but being Italian and sixty years of age and growing up with the greats, it was easy to fall in love and admire their beliefs. Why did people think my family was nuts because we had friends of all colors and religions staying overnight when we were kids. My dad, who passed away last year at eighty, always taught me and my three brothers and sister, you never make fun of anyone because they are short, skinny, heavy, black, white, Catholic, Jewish, etc..., your true friends come in all shapes and sizes and colors. Miss you like crazy dad. Love always, Billy

Fellow Italian here. My dad raised us the same way. He was so against ethnic slurs toward Italians, and he was equally against any racial or ethnic slur against any group of people. We grew up to be accepting and tolerant.

Thank you and blu48 for these thoughts. Always sad to read the responses of the poorly raised, 'bless their hearts'. My parents, Scottish/English and Italian/Irish raised us to feel the same way. For all their faults, and despite all their other failures, their anti-racist, pro-equality feelings always came through. Maybe it's partly because of all the stuff they went through themselves, especially through the war. Missing both my parents too.

Amen! Born in 69 and was lucky to catch the end. Ok...the 70s...huge lapels, leisure suits and Disco. It got a bit funky. Glad it was my early childhood. But the big 80s. Wild times. Actually, my teen years were some of the hardest but damn...do I miss them. It was that magical time where we were casting off the ugly stuff like racism and other ugliness. You saw times were changing. But, people still had enough of the older values like strength and not crying over ever little thing. America was coming back and had some pride again. We had hope! Two major events, the hostages freed in Iran and believe it or not, Team USA winning goal in the 80 Olympics. That..was massive. It reminded us thatm if we stick together we can do anything. Oh..we still had some hard times for sure. But, the worm had turn. We had a President that spoke of hope and loved America. Our politicians were still crooks....but they weren't bat crap crazy. Reagan and Tip O'Neal, dem speaker of the house, had movie night or lunch just about weekly. They may have talked a bit of shop but then...it was just two men hanging out and being men. It was a better time.
Oh...and the music! I feel so bad for kids these days. Saw Van Halen, and most bands for $12!!!! General admission and it was some great band every month. Especially summer time! It was.... amazing! Now.... you pay what....few hundred to watch lip syncing and dancing? You've been robbed!
When we had problems....we leaned on our friends and self medicated. We didn't take pills that made us shoot up schools and we didn't get on social media to see what the outrage of de jour was so we could hurry and change our profile pic or bio!!! We certainly didn't give a damn about what some anonymous stranger thought and we didn't try and impress them with what we thought. We worked hard and played harder and still believe there was an American dream.
That's all gone now. Our leaders only protect their own power and wealth and the wealth of the elite ruling class! We are a nation of whining cowards!

Now the government may even censor you on social media. WTF happened to freedom of speech?? Oh yeah, trump took care of that with CISA in 2018. But Sinatra also refused to perform at any venues that were racially prejudiced because of his love for Sammy. When Sammy lost his eye in his accident, Sinatra famously paid his medical expenses.

      @BruceLee-rc2dr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

@@Zihannya Frank was known to be against prejudice. There is a story of him going to a restaurant and a busboy dropped a entire tray of wine glasses after Frank said to him ''How you doin' kid?'' and got shocked Frank did that. The owner of the place started to berate the poor kid, calling him all kinds of names including racist one and said that he is fired. Frank stood up and asked ''Whats the problem? How much for the glass? 5 cents per glass? OK, you kid. Whats your name? Hector? Ok do me a favor i want you to go and bring me 2000 dollars worth of glass from the back'' The busboy did as Frank said and brought out every piece of glass there was, even some plates. When he brought em out he told the young kid ''Now start breaking all of em one by one'' Frank then turned to the owner. ''If i ever come back here, and Hector aint working, i am going to tell my friends not to come here ever again, and that will be the least of your problems''.
Frank was a legend. A class act unlike anyone else. Stood up for the little guy, he never forgot where he came from. He was against that crap when it was ok to be a racist a-hole. Hell he even convinced the Mob to open the first ever non segregated Casinos and Hotels in Vegas. They even made a freaking fortune because of it.

The movie came out the same year Frank died. Of all the 'Rat Pack' only Joey Bishop was still alive when HBO aired this, and one wonders what he may have thought of it. As for me, I thought it was great, and I think that as impossible as it may be to fully capture the essence of any well-known superstar, they did about as good as anybody could've done with this film's casting. They used voice-over dubs for Frank's singing, which is almost obvious since Ray Liotta's speaking voice doesn't sound like Frank's speaking voice at all -- yet Ray's a great actor who embodies the essence of Sinatra in his mannerisms, I think. He comes across as intimidating when he needs to be, Sinatra having been rather volatile at times.
One thing that is a bit anachronistic, though, at 13:35, is when they depict Sinatra's Palm Springs pool having the Queen of Diamonds artwork depicted in it before JFK gets elected. THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE was released in 1962, some 2 years in to Kennedy's Presidency, so Frank would not have had that iconic image from the film decorating his pool prior to the election.

Some of my uncles spoke about Sinatra like he was family and I guess you could say he was in the Italian way, the same way the theme for the Godfather movie was played at my Uncle Mike and Aunt Lena's 60th. wedding anniversary. They lived in East Palestine, Ohio, near Youngstown, where my 12 aunts and uncles grew up. Hollywood did much to frame the nature of those with Italian heritages and this movie is no exception. My favorite line in the Godfather was when Kate said to Michael, while they were walking down the street, followed by a limo, just after he returned from Sicily, "Michael, Presidents and Senators don't have people killed." Obviously another misinformed American. My favorite "line" from the scriptures, and one that impacted my immortal soul while I was having my "rat pack" fantasies was and is, "What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?" You tell me if you think you are informed...

Sinatra and JFK's Friendship was over after JFK didn't show and went to stay at Crosby's. Well, JFK didn't live long after that, and neither did Bobby who advised him to Sever ties with Sinatra because of his association with 2 Mob figures. Meanwhile, Frank Sinatra lived to see Old age and was still Rich & Famous performing up until his dying day filling up the house with Fans and Celebrities alike to watch his shows. Dean & Sammy continued to perform before health issues due to aging. The last time the Rat Pack performed together was 1984.
Sammy, Dean and Sinatra remained friends and passed away mid to late 1990s.

The book " Double Crossed" gives you even better insight as to how badly/hard Sam Giancana took the news of Bobby Kennedy becoming the US Attorney General. Sam personally felt that without his (The Mafia) assistance in the state of Illinois, John Kennedy may not have won the 1960 election. It's a "must-read", highly recommended publication.

Bogie was cultured and intellectual - not at all a snob, but he did realize that contrasted greatly with his tough guy persona. His private and public lives were worlds apart.
Too, he and Bacall's friends in theatrical and
literary circles were as important to them as anything. The fact that they were a team was obviously different relationship from the ones the other rat packers had with their wives.
Guess I'm saying his position in the pack didn't matter for posterity, but it did in his heart.

It’s really too bad that nobody has retained a city block that cultivates talent the way it was done back then. Music stores. Record shops. Theaters. Even the night spots. Today, people are actually following the auditions, instead of seeing the finished, refined musical performance.
Not that a LOT of vice didn’t go hand-in-hand with it-but what incredible skill under pressure, by those Pack Greats, including Lawford & Bishop, live or televised!! Even when they missed a note or two, nothing but poise and aplomb, all night.
No wonder Sinatra had no patience for endless takes by company-employee directors. It’s worth a mention that Sammy Davis, Jr. had the longest career, having been a child when he joined his uncle’s Vaudeville band/act. He was also the first Black TV talkshow/variety host to be monetized commercially, after Nat Cole was ‘unable to be sponsored’ in that way.
Dean Martin had already been given his first break after boxing by Jewish mob men, not Italians, interestingly. Frank Sinatra, also grew up on multiple sides of neighboring bad boys who mobbed-up later as Irish & Italian adults. As did the older Kennedys, Joseph, Jr. & his brother John. Kathleen and Rosemary, too, in all likelihood.
A tacky shame that Politics requires so-called minorities to cut-off old, established ties with the very people who gave many political aspirants their starts. Hypocritical, too! Considering that NO immigrant wave was exactly the crème de la crème of its origin points, truthfully, & very few have demonstrated real skill at actual conscientious, sanguine “leadership” once in the New landscape.
Yet somehow, instead of fresh starts, new values, different futures, each generation saddles itself with proving something to “the folks back home” that none have successfully proven: Justice, and “better living.”
They generate more dollars, to be sure, than ever before. But lose moral compass every time because of blind ambition, egomania, and love of pretense, love of staging, then resorting to lying about grim realities, instead of really working to find and resolve the causes. Staging’s just easier.
Try, try, try though they may, they’re not generating the kinds of talent & spine that era (& others) did. Too busy making-up “privileges” out of ordinary living, & overcharging for that. Too desperately hoarding access which should be granted to every single public schooler-just in the hope of rekindling something vital that’s been lost, possibly forever: Promise. 🎼🎶🎻🎺🎸🌷

I really wish some people today, especially the ones that are so infected with politics and ideology...would remember when people like Sammy went through then...so they would have the chances the do now. They have no clue what being offended or oppressed is!!! Sammy took a thousand paper cuts and they shame his memory and sacrifice! Its disgusting and cruel!
