    If ever a problem getting them to change it at 5k miles, just pull out the maintenance guide from the glovebox, and point to the special operating conditions section, then tell them to get busy changing the oil.

    Kind of nice watching a oil change on a clean rust free car. Don't see many of those in Ohio. Good job on Vinnie's part loaning you the shop, but that's what brothers are for. I have 3 plus 5 sisters. Merry Christmas to you and family.

      It’s got 16k on it now , it definitely broke in the car runs noticeably stronger and my mpg went up a sold 1-2 mpg . Toyota dealer did the next oil change at 10k , the 15k service was just a tire rotation and fluid check, the oil is still so clean at 16k I’m just going to run it to 20 k and let the dealer do the included oil change.

    I have exactly same filter type 90915-10003 on my 2022 Prius Prime and our dealers in Ontario Canada also don't change oil at first 8000km, so I'll have do it myself.
    Right now this type of filter is out of stock at Toyota, so I had to get a similar size Fram at Canadain Tire.

    It is so convenient to do it on the hoist. I am thinking to do the oil change at 5k, but still trying to find where the jack point is, just can't see it because the car is so low. Good video. Thank you.

      E Tran Thank you. I have a set of the low ramps they would work great for you. They aren’t that expensive either. I only used my brothers shop because I wanted to film it since no one else had done an oil change on one on TH-cam . When I changed it the oil was so clean , but I just couldn’t let the first oil change go to 10000. I’m at 8400 now and the oil is still so clean it’s hard to see on the dipstick ..going to get my free 10000 service probably in about 6 weeks or so at this rate ..btw let me know how tight your filter was, mine way too tight from the factory . I almost had to crush it to get it loose .

    • @fisherpaykelauto6137
      @fisherpaykelauto6137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnDiMartino Hi John, thank you for the suggestions about using the ramps , I will go to my local auto store and check if they will go under my front bumper before I buy it. Also thanks for the warning about the oil filter's tightness :) I can see you have a useful removal tool there for it, I have a different type , sort of like a adjustable plier I hope it will work for my car. My car has only 2000 km about 1300 miles I think, as Australia is using metric system. Like you I also hate the cartridge oil filter type which my Camry hybrid has. We also have the 2003 Corolla that has a spin on filter and it makes life so easy for every oil change. I will do the oil change in April and I will let you know :) Thank you again.

    Loved your routine oil change for the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid; just remove four bolts to remove the shield and drop the oil drain bolt and old filter using the oil filter wrench; easy as can be now; looks like it is highly accessible space behind the shield; I would love to also install a bypass oil filter in conjunction with an oil filter cooler to not only keep the 0w-16w synthetic oil as clean as potentially as practically possible for at least 10k miles oil change interval; so that the synthetic oil stays very cool in even in the hot weather and also so that the synthetic oil stays pure and clean down to the three micron contamination particle size; their looks to be enough space behind the shield; what oil bypass filter parts would I need to buy and what kind of oil cooler should one install to be able to keep one's 0w-16w synthetic oil as clean as potentially possible for at least 10,000 miles; I would like to keep my 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid for at least 25 years and I figure keeping the synthetic oil ultra clean with 3 micron bypass oil filter and using a matching accompanying oil cooler would be the best way to do that task; from what In understand it is not that an expensive initial investment to protect one's typical Toyota Corolla Hybrid vehicle.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand you wanting to do the bypass filter ,In this case I really don’t think it’s necessary I did pull an oil sample At 30,000 miles and the oil was still usable.If you live north in the salt belt ,And drive less than 20,000 miles a year I would focus more on keeping the underside rust free because it’s going to rust out before it wears out. Keep all ground connections coated with fluid film or dielectric grease.If you want it to last forever I would just change the oil at 5000 to 7500 miles it’s really easy to do when it’s very cheap you can get the oil and filter for $30-35 when the oil is on sale,Just stock up on it. Thank you for your comment and for watching the video I wish you the best of luck with your car,I love seeing other owners taking control and doing their own maintenance.

    I don't reuse the metal drain plug gasket on my 2020 Toyota Camry nor on past 2011 Toyota Camry . Though it's metal , when do you decide to replace it , before it starts leaking for what reason !? I'm using now a magnetic plug and had soft " gunk " on the tip , but no hard metal particles . I always use an oil flush of either Amsoil or Liqui-Moly . Would use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum as before , but only their Platimun 0W16 is available and a Amsoil filter .

      I just did my 30 K service yesterday I replaced the drain plug washer the dealer did both of the 10 and 20k and you can see the washer was pretty beat up,So it’s not likely they replaced it. I’m gonna be uploading the 30 K video soon.

    It seems odd that the drain plug is not at the lowest part of the pan. From what I can tell from the video, it is at the front and up a little. So, I would put the car back on the ground and lift the rear to get a complete drain of the pan.
    On my Gen 2 Prius, the drain plug is on the right (passenger) end of the pan. So, I put the car on the ground and raise the car on the driver's side. By doing that, I am able to drain almost a full cup more of dirty oil !
    The result after refilling: Oil on the dipstick is light amber; looks just like it did pouring out. And... it will stay light amber for approx 3k miles before showing sign soot discoloration.

      @JohnDiMartino  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The regular Corolla has a lot more options . In the US you can’t get leather a sunroof or heated seats/wheel in a hybrid , but in Canada you can, also it’s 15” wheels only ..... it’s LE trim level only . I’m ok with it since it’s just my commuter car , I may add heated seats ...

      We have a Camry hybrid, and a petrol only with the 2l engine. One family member also have the previous Corolla hybrid hatchback model, I don't mind to own one of the Corolla hybrid as they are excellent for fuel economy. But I decided to buy the petrol model because it's cheaper and also it doesn't use that much petrol either. I can get around 6 to 7.5l/ 100km. On the plus side it has a little bit more power if I ever need it.

    Look up Openpilot Logan Legrand videos... Self driving level 2! I've got it in my 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, I really enjoy it for trips. (I only get 51 mpg, even before I installed the Openpilot. Any tips on increasing fuel economy? Mixed driving, very little city... Thanks!)

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NoOneOfConsequence I have been watching the open pilot videos since I got my car, From what I’m seeing it doesn’t do anything unless you have active cruise control on .... I hate how the car drives itself on active cruise ...That’s been what has been preventing me from buying. I only have a 2.5 mile section of highway going to work , I hav toll plazas and red lights and turns at them . I only use the car to go back and forth to work pretty much so I haven’t bought yet... I’m sure the longer I wait the more revisions to the hardware there will be too . Improvements are constant ... I just checked my mileage again in my hand calculate mileage is about 58.5 now this is over the winter months it’s gonna get better in the summer. I think your road speed has a huge effect keeping it at 65 or under makes a huge difference also the most efficient speed for the car is 25 to 45 mph IMO and most of my commute is in that range . My dashboard said I was getting 67.8 miles to the gallon the last time I filled up and that is a tank average my hand calculated mileage was 61.3... so you can’t go by the dash it’s always optimistic . I keep my car in the garage in the winter that helps tremendously I don’t need to warm it up at all no defrosting it’s always 45 to 55 in my garage back right out and drive off gently. I put the driver side seat heater in ,That helped a lot in the winter now I can keep the heat off on 14 mile section of road where my engine doesn’t run at all or just for 20 seconds if I catch a red light . Of course on the way home I pay for that it’s all uphill. But having tone garage and seat heater stops the engine from running a lot to make heat and defrost .

    John, I'm contemplating trading in my 2012 Toyota Corolla with 110,000 miles for a brand new 2020 Corolla hybrid. Do you like driving the hybrid? Does it have adequate power for merging onto crowded freeways?

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ray Emanuel It’s adequate but definitely no rocket . It is definitely stronger than my old 03 Honda Civic auto..And the Corolla lacks the nimble feel of my old Honda, but it’s way more stable . I’m kind of impressed with how well this car handles considering it only has 15 inch wheels ,The OEM Yokohama tires are excellent in the dry and rain.If this thing had 17 inch wheels it would be on rails. The car takes a set in the corner and even a few bumps won’t disrupt it it holds a line great. I like it more now than when I got it at six months ago.My biggest complaint about the engine is how noisy it is above 2500 RPM although it doesn’t run there much when it does it’s kind of noisy. The car does not struggle to maintain speed either like most small 4 bangers . And my miles per gallon are between 60 and 62 in the summer and fall and now in the winter I’m down to 54 miles per gallon it doesn’t shut off nearly as much with the heat on high.

      I would do the oil change after you have the engine up to temperature , use caution removing the drain plug. That’s how I do it . This gets the most contaminants out . I try to remove the drain plug within a minute or less of shutdown . I agree it’s hard to see the oil level . I check mine in the morning before I start it . That’s the easiest way to see it . On my 2020 4.2 quarts filled it . I had Toyota care and the dealer overfilled it both times they charged the oil . I don’t think they check it they just put a little extra in and call it good .

    what's the oil change interval? 10k, or 5k? My maintenance light comes on every 5.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine came on at 4600 said maintenance soon... the oil change interval is 10,000 miles exc for severe service (towing,roof top carriers, extended slow speed operation such as Taxi) then it’s 5000 . But every 5000 it requires the floor floor mats checked,(seriously) tire rotation and multi point checks fluid checks etc,and there’s also a HV intake filter for the hybrid cooling system that needs to be serviced at 5000 if on the servere schedule and 10000 if not. I think every other service it gets the hv cooling system level checked as well.... I have Toyota care so there doing all the services til 25000. I only did the first oil change because I didn’t want to go. 10,000 miles on the new engine before changing it.

      @@kyle-qw5yx No problem, they really don’t tell you much about the peculiarities of a hybrid, I recently learned about the hv battery not charging in N , they should tell you that when you buy the car. Very poor wording and putting in park isn’t an option once you commit to going thru the wash .

      It's not like it will break or warp or leak, so you can take a chance on a simple oil filter, especially if you change your oil on schedule you will notice if something is wrong. If they made them here it would cost at least twice as much. So again, it's just an oil filter man.

  • @BluSky1
    @BluSky1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do not Do this to a new Toyota (Bad move), the oil in the car from the factory has special additives. You shouldn't change it until the 10,000 mile interval as dealer and manufacturer says. The special additives help with the engine break in period. These cars are bullet proof as long as you follow the maintenance schedule listed by the manufacturer who created the car.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It had 3800 miles on it , I spoke to my dealer about it, your information contradicts there’s . According to the Toyota dealer , there’s nothing special in the factory fill , They said they would change it at the 5000 service if I wanted . My car doesn’t use a drop of oil and I’m getting 61 to 66 miles to the gallon the worst thing I’ve ever done to my car is take my car to the dealer service dept . Once I do this last oil change at 20,000 miles in the next few weeks that’ll be the last time my car sees a Toyota dealership unless it’s a warranty issue.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My oil analysis came back absolutely perfect in part because I did this ….There’s nothing special about the oil , changing it early removes the high levels of wear metals from the initial engine break in when the parts are wearing in together . Waiting 10k miles ona new engine is just dumb unless you do not care about the long term service life . Btw this video more than paid for the oil change and I helped a lot of ppl with it who weren’t sure how to do it or what filter to get. 👍
