This just happened to my Infiniti Fx35 today. I was driving home and bam! Rough idling and slow acceleration. Got it to the mechanic and they said The coil in cylinder five was out. It’s impressive how one causes problems! Thanks man!
That one question I really have to ask: can't that small hole in the boot be patched w/ PC7 or something? Just to get you home etc. if you are far away..
For me nothing came up on the scan tool, did the manual check, put a new ignition coil in and worked beautifully. My symptoms was when accelerating normally, it would jerk a lot, but would be ok when accelerating slowly.
Good vid, I am likely going to use this on a BMW bike to puzzle out a fault indicator that I believe is a coil going bad. But I will order a fault cod reader first.. Best guess till then is the fault code is likely a slow failing coil.
Thank you! With the OBD scanner it was hard to tell which was bad because the "firing orders" are different for certain cars. The manual way saved my ass just now!
You're welcome! Usually if one coil fails, the rest of them are nearing failure as well, so its always good to replace them all at once, however if you are in a pinch you can just replace the bad coil.

In this particular example, could not just the rubber insulating boot be replaced since it clearly had the defect? I imagine the coil likely could still be operating correctly, but the spark was exiting through the defect in the boot instead of down to the plug. I could not really make out any discoloration in the boot around defect though in the video to support this possibility. It makes more sense in my mind to repair the part with a new boot at a fraction of the cost of a complete coil if that is the failure. It was $5 for a boot vs $60 for the coil on my Volvo. Start with the obvious things like checking ignition coil fuse, and move on from there. How do you know its not getting power, assuming you tested with a multi meter for power at the connector with key on? If so, you might have to trace the wiring, could be a broken or shorted out wire somewhere in the harness.

I’m subscribed. I need the diagnostic tips, the easier the better. I have an owner of a 2001 Land Rover Discovery, the vehicle will crank but not start. I asked the owner if the tach needle moves while attempting to start and he said “no”. I suspect the crank position sensor. The owner had someone else look at the vehicle and a scan tool was connected. That revealed an ignition coil to possibly be bad. I’m going to the owner’s house Thursday to check both of the possible problems. A wiring schematic I obtained does not show which of the three wires from the connector are what. I noticed upon looking at a connector for that ignition coil there was a red, a black, and a blue wire. I would reckon the red is for the power, black is for the ground, and blue is for the signal to the computer. I want to properly diagnose the coil with my multimeter and I want to check the proper terminals that the connector plugs into. What do you reckon? Also, I attempted a spark test but after testing three of the eight spark plugs I wasn’t getting a spark at all. To me that didn’t seem right.
It is quite possible for those parts to cause the car to go into limp mode, but simple misfires are more common symptoms of these parts going bad. If your car is shutting off after putting in gas, you likely have another issue. We'd recommend finding a local mechanic to help you properly diagnose the issue then coming back to us when you need the parts. We'll help you get exactly what you need!
I just change the spark plugs on my 2003 honda civic but when i was putting the spark plug back it crack when i was tining the crew do i need to change the coil or its still good i just change the coils like 3 weeks ago
I have a 2004 330ci and I got the PO302 code. I changed the coils, plugs, the injector at #2 and STILL misfiring. You said "wiring" and that makes me think that there is no power to that coil due to a wiring problem. Where should I begin?
My 2005 BMW 545I with only 77k misfires and sometimes I get misfire codes (by various cylinders, not always same cylinders )by obd2 scanner , other times I don t get codes. This happens only during cold start up in the morning after car was left overnight. it vibrates, shakes and misfires at cold start up but once it s warm, it s good for the rest of the day, even when it s still cold out. what causes this? I replaced valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, oil filter change, any ideas?
A bit of further diagnosis may be needed, but often times bad oxygen sensors can also trigger multiple misfire codes and cause a rough idle, on our "older" BMW's.
I replaced my coil after having it checked with a scanner at my auto parts store and now my car (328xi 2011) runs and idles fine but the service engine soon light has yet to go off 32 miles later. Is this something I may have to delete with a scanner? Or will it go off on own?
Hi Kevin. If the service engine soon light does not go off after more driving, you will probably have to clear the old code. You can have a shop do this, or you can purchase your own scanner, that way you can check and clear your own codes. Here is a great scanner/code reader: www.fcpeuro.com/products/maxidiag-md808-professional-obdii-scanner-autel-md808p
Is it possible (or common) for a brand new ignition coil to go bad in approx 1000 miles? I had all of them and plugs changed in my last service a couple weeks ago and today the car is driving and idling real bad. The coils are bosch
Anything is possible, have you checked the codes? If you purchased them from us, feel free to email service@fcpeuro.com and we would be happy to make it right.
I just spend nearly 3k on my car at a highly recommended shop. I’m a bit disappointed I left and my car has other issues it didn’t have before. They did a full tune up Including oil change and spark plugs. My car has a slight vibration when I stop at the light. I notice the car revs up before dropping idle before I come to a complete stop. I’ve been there twice to complain about the issue. My trust is loss and the fact I didn’t have this issue before taking it in.

Hi, Jamar. I'm not sure what you mean by heater color 5 hose. Do you mean your heater core hoses busted? If so, coolant would have probably sprayed out rather than oil and you possibly could have overheated or damaged your engine.

I had one go bad as well...had to have it fixed so it was $500 parts and labor... I had no idea what was wrong so I had to pay the price. While I was waiting I looked on TH-cam and found out it's done... about a 15 minute job that anybody can do... paid the price because I didn't know...they used an aftermarket part from O'Reilly and charge $60 over what I could have paid if I bought myself. If you drive too long with the bad coil it could burn out the catalytic converter so now I know what to do if happens again.
buy yourself a FULL BUS scanner for $50 more... you will have access to all the car 30+ modules! Dont buy a limited "check engine light" ("4 systems") scanner or you'll miss the whole picture. The OBD2 CAN-BUS was developed by Bosch, everyone else was forced to join the wagon
you need to scan you OBD2 port to understand what module is acting up or what sensor is bad! Transmission in "Limp Mode" is a serious issue to prevent more damages.

Would not suspect the issue to be ignition coil related. Ignition coils will cause misfires and rarely will ever cause a vehicle to stop running. Without further info it's hard to say for sure what the problem is but seeing that the truck turns off like a switch is being flipped it sounds like an ignition switch issue which is pretty common on B2200's.

I want to properly diagnose the coil with my multimeter and I want to check the proper terminals that the connector plugs into. What do you reckon? Also, I attempted a spark test but after testing three of the eight spark plugs I wasn’t getting a spark at all. To me that didn’t seem right.
Do u know if bad ignition coils n spark plugs can cause a bmw to go into limp mode,? And can it cause it to shut off after putting in gas?
It is quite possible for those parts to cause the car to go into limp mode, but simple misfires are more common symptoms of these parts going bad. If your car is shutting off after putting in gas, you likely have another issue. We'd recommend finding a local mechanic to help you properly diagnose the issue then coming back to us when you need the parts. We'll help you get exactly what you need!
I just change the spark plugs on my 2003 honda civic but when i was putting the spark plug back it crack when i was tining the crew do i need to change the coil or its still good i just change the coils like 3 weeks ago
Hi I have a 07 750li I'm getting p300 code along with 304 305 302 308 301 do you think it's the ignition coils?
A bit of further diagnosis may be needed, but often times bad oxygen sensors can also trigger multiple misfire codes and cause a rough idle, on our "older" BMW's.
would you change the plug as well?
Changing spark plugs is always a good idea since they are cheap and easy to do!
Well done. Thanks.
Hey question? Do the misfire cause a stall? I have a bmw 330i and I’m getting codes (29d2-29d9)
Misfires can cause your engine to stall if they are bad enough, however that code you are getting is likely a bad fuel injector.
This saved my pockets.
Awesome, Aaron!
Can I do this procedure on a 2003 Mercedes E500 because I've Been Told doing so it can damage the ECU ,my scanner show that I have cylinder 2and 3 misfiring and I'm hoping that could be the coils not something before like cable harnesses or fuel injectors I've already installed 8 new spark plugs so I want to do the manual test but I was hesitant plz let me know if that is Okay to do so thanks
Hi Monir, your engine has 16 spark plugs as its a dual plug per cylinder design. Additionally, yes you should be able to swap coils from the other bank to isolate which ignition coil is the issue.
i hope this wil work i put in new sparks today but now its idling the same as in this vid. so tomorrow ill chabge all 4 coils and hope its done .. did all this cuz between 2-3k rev. it releases boost like 1-3 times in a row but now with the new sparks at .022 it does it like one time at 4k revs only whilst punching the throttle whilst driving .. but eith all that no check engine light or annything 🤦♂️ PLZ SHARE YOUR APINION ON THIS
hello mate. i have a F30 which have N13 engine. sometimes i see engine check light on cluster. When i runs diasnostic its give me this error: ignition coil. All cylinders. open curciut. But my car working correctly. what is the problem ?
What can cause this same 2012 528i 4 cylinder to stall while driving randomly usually when I punch the gas ? Help ?
Hi Steph, It's difficult to diagnose that kind of issue without seeing the car. I would recommend bringing the car to your local service center to get it diagnosed. Once you determine the issue, we'd be happy to help you find the parts you need!
In nissan you are not getting code for coil and some toyota cars no codes and in maxima coils are underneath the plenum so it's not easy you can check front then swap them back and coils on the back shift it infront and check big headache 😅😅😅
My f30 n20 was scan by dealer high pressure rail sensor.the sympthon crank cannot start the engine.sometime i can start the engine suddenly for a few minute or second the engine turn off.drivetrainnmultiction. its is true the high pressure sensor fault?
It could be! You said the dealer scanned the car? What did the dealer say the issue was?
@@fcpeuro the dealer say that is high pressure rail sensor fault .The dealer already erase the fault but want to check again either the fault still or not. Rail pressure sensor fault the symphton is crank cannot start and sometime the engine is turn off and the rpm go down to 0 from 1???
Can you please help my BWM 320i e90 does not start, does not engage ignition. No ignition lights on the dashboard. This happens after having a battery issues. What could be the problem?
It sounds like you still may have a batter issue or a battery connection issue. Check for loose connections at the battery, loose ground, loose positive wire, etc.
@@fcpeuro thanks the problem solved. It's like there was a system break down between battery system and ignition system. The car was fine after being synchronised.
Very good
can you tell me how to reach 5th and 6th ignition coil (which are very inner side) in 2011 BMW 535 ix drive?
The cabin air filter box will need to be removed to gain access.
Nice job man wow,,,, South Africa
Thanks for the love!
gonna do this to my E39 540i now
This is cool
My Volvo s60 heater color 5 hose busted and oil sprayed all over the engine I fixed the hose but now when I try to start the car my car won't crank all I hear it's a spinning sound coming I think from my starter I changed the starter but I still get the same problem what would this problem be and how would I fix this problem
Hi, Jamar. I'm not sure what you mean by heater color 5 hose. Do you mean your heater core hoses busted? If so, coolant would have probably sprayed out rather than oil and you possibly could have overheated or damaged your engine.
@@fcpeuro yea I changed my spark plugs and they were drinched in oil went would that happened
what about coils on mercedes benz 1994 S420?
Awesome!
The first start, it runs 2 cylinders, I let it runs for 30 seconds then turn off and restart it, and it runs ok. What was happening?
Thanks
You really should have showed how the scanner followed the coil pack.
Outstanding
I changed the coil on my BMW 535ii 2011 but still had Check engine Light It's still on
Hi Juan, you will always want to reset the check engine light after doing your repair.
Great! I had an identical issue on sons 2007 e83 X3. We needed to fix it right away so bought one from Autozone as they had an equivalent in stock. It fixed it but given the high mileage of his car I’m going to order a complete set from you. The one I took out looks like Bosch unit. Do you have these in stock?
Yes, we have them in stock.
My car is in the shop right now for bad coil and other stuff. The total is over $600. My car would jerk, hesitate and shit off while at the light. There was a ticking sound and smell of gas. I live in Miami, Fl
Did it fix the problem ?
What else was wrong with it
I had one go bad as well...had to have it fixed so it was $500 parts and labor...
How to take off the cilp in
What if the there not individual coils and you have a coil rail
What scan tool is that
iCarsoft ....is printed as its label, (0:44) search that ...find this: HD I for Heavy Duty Diagnostic Tool $295.95
Can anybody help me with why drivetrain malfunction comes when car is warm and gone when car is colder.
THANK YOU! :))
What scan tool did u used ?
An iCarsoft scanner was used.
buy yourself a FULL BUS scanner for $50 more... you will have access to all the car 30+ modules!
Dont buy a limited "check engine light" ("4 systems") scanner or you'll miss the whole picture.
The OBD2 CAN-BUS was developed by Bosch, everyone else was forced to join the wagon
89 Chevy 1500 2wd, very rough idle, when stopped, engine stop, will restart, pulsing idle,
I am using a hyundai elantra and it jerks intermittently whiles driving. can it be a faulty ignition coil?
Elijah Bourban Boateng ever figure this out?
What if ignition coil is stuck?
Hi Natalia, sometimes they can be a bit stubborn, just give it a good tug and it should pop out!
My car went in safe mode also wont change gear faul and i change the coils and erase then woks fine , is that is normal ????
you need to scan you OBD2 port to understand what module is acting up or what sensor is bad!
Transmission in "Limp Mode" is a serious issue to prevent more damages.

my b2200 will run for most of the day then it will turn off like a switch and and wont start again. and then the very next day it will start again, and repeat the same process. could that be a bad ignition coil? i am completely stumped. PLEASE HELP!
Would not suspect the issue to be ignition coil related. Ignition coils will cause misfires and rarely will ever cause a vehicle to stop running. Without further info it's hard to say for sure what the problem is but seeing that the truck turns off like a switch is being flipped it sounds like an ignition switch issue which is pretty common on B2200's.
won't that change firing order for those two cylinders
No he moved coil one to the number two and two to one, but did not move spark plug wires which would of changed the firing order
@@kcmescal2618 but the electricity is coming from the coils.....
@@rajanbrar6561 there cool over plug, so the charge is the same, coil over plug can be placed over any plug and will be the same, but defect will show up where defective coil moves to, same can be done with a wire or plug
You didn't mentioned if the check engine light went out immediately
If you had a check engine light before, you will want to clear the code after replacing the coil packs, the light will not go out immediately.
Aprendí algo👍🏽
How much doesthe coil cost
www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-direct-ignition-coil-12138616153-1
So you think Delphi it’s better that bosh for bmw??
Bosch parts are purposely the bottom of the barrel, anything else is better
It would be better to disconnect the injector associated with the specific cylinder in question as disconnecting the ignition coil pack cuts all combustion in that cylinder sending more raw gas downstream that isn't particularly good for the catalyst.
@Arnold Rimmer these car are built to eat parts, everything goes: rims, cats, coils, intake manifolds.
The home mechanic understands that 1 coil being bad announces the others going the same way
