Wow, I am blown away by the performance on these machines! I am also stuck on a gaming laptop bought in 2017.
I guess it’s time for an upgrade! ;)
@@NotebookcheckReviews i have recently upgraded my 2017 model to a MSI 3070 11800h .
Also a very solid machine! And that 3070 should still manage to pump out some frames! 💪🏻
@@NotebookcheckReviews definitely, I am looking at Asus's options as well! Everyone did good this year.
For sure, pricing is a bit painful tho 😅
notice any thermal throttling while gaming of any sort. ?
I have Legion Y530 that I bought in 2019 (1050ti / i5-12th gen) it was a good laptop for its price back in the day ($800). A few days ago my gpu stopped working because of code 43 I think its hardware damage but idk. Currently I am planning on buying either gaming laptop or pc. I am stuck for now cause as a developer I need laptop but currently my job is providing me MacBook so I could go with PC. However, you never know what happens tomorrow. I mainly do gaming with external monitor/keyboard/mouse
I am very happy with Legion laptops. The port layout is by far the selling point of the Legion brand laptops, however this time around there is something that I find very disturbing. The first is that the GPU is been giving a pointless 140Wats when 120 is more than enough. The remaining wattage could be used in feeding the CPU be it Intel or AMD. I don't know whether or not the new AI chip inside the new Legions would automatically compensate for the difference in power once it realizes that 120Wats is sufficient on the GPU. This would be very interesting. Even a BIOS update would suffice for such a shift in power.
As always terrific review. I always enjoy seeing Legion reviews from you and other content creators. Keep up the good work. Although on a personal note, I would say the 4070 is the way to go and if you are going to go higher then definitely take the 4090.
Thank you for your feedback and your kind words.
I agree; the 140W for the RTX 4070 and 4060 is pretty pointless since the GPU rarely takes advantage of it.
The 4070/4060 are great choices for smaller and slimmer gaming notebooks (like the Flow X16, for example), and the chunkier models make the most sense with the 4080/4090. But that is, of course, also another budget range entirely.
'Especially since the Legion is a great gaming notebook with either GPU.
Should i buy it

The ROG Strix G16 and Rog Strix Scar 17 are on the same line. Both values are also combined.
Oops, they are on the same line, but the numbers are not combined! The G16 has insane battery life!
@@NotebookcheckReviews I see!
It looks like there was a cut/copy/paste issue because the Scar 17 is listed twice: once in the top and then on the third entry (which is missing the information found at the top)
Yes, the first one was supposed to be the ROG Strix G16 whereas the third was supposed to be the Strix Scar 17!
The values are accurate tho! I will pin a comment correcting that mistake first thing tomorrow!

Could you please check out the new 2024 versions? I really want to buy it ut not sure which cpu this time..
bought the amd version legion 5 pro, 7745hx is very hot, but you can undervolt the cpu in the lenovo vantage, for long time gaming loading, the cpu keep the power consummation aroung 45watt, temperature is around 80 degree
Thank you for sharing.
So How is the performance when you undervolt the cpu?
Which is best in terms of temperature and long time performance
Amd one's or Intel one's
how did you undervolt?
It's good to see such tight competition between the two major CPU brands. Of course, for the same price, I'd take the 4070 over the 4060 given they are so close. The fans sounded surprisingly pleasant, too.
But really, my biggest takeaway is that the market is *screaming* for the 7800M, as I can't help but feel bad about these still being 8 GB. An Advantage Edition of the L5P could be amazing, and likely even cheaper than the 4070.
Competition is always good for us in the end. So a well-placed mobile AMD card would certainly be welcome.
The same price was for both 4070 configs. They have been within 100$ if I recall correctly. But it seems like Lenovo is changing its asking price every other day.
Saw your new review on the asus zenbook pro 14inch, am not sold on the weird choices on the new Razer 14" so looking for the Lenovo Yoga pro 9i 14" but havent seen a review on the performance anywhere!
Anyone know a resource that thoroughly goes through the Lenovo or even compares these new 14" monsters?

About temperatures - Ryzen laptops have always been hotter than Intel ones at the same wattage(given the same cooling system), ever since 4000 series\Zen 2.
Thanks for the review!
Yepp, this is what we observed as well. I guess it should be fine, but of course, it is very hard for us to do any long-term testing.
Any laptop will be hotter if it pushed further. downclock it 2% and make it cooler.
@@vmafarah9473 how do you downlock a mobile Ryzen CPU by a slight amount? so far I only know ways how to either power limit it or disable turbo boost completely. Neither of which is ideal.
@@NotebookcheckReviewsI heard that intel's die is thinner than amd's and thus dissipates heat better hence intel running cooler despite using more power.
that's because they are smaller and more dense. The bigger the chips are (less dense node, transistors further from each other), the higher clocks and lower temperatures at the same wattage, but also the more power they need overall for the same performance
If only Lenovo would release the 7945HX/4090 here in the US 😢 I'm so tired of waiting and the Scar 17 according to users is cancer with so many issues.
The Legion Pro 7? What are the reports for the Scar 17? I still have it here for a review!

I would like a legion 7 with AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX and 7800M XT or 4080/4090. Please Lenovo bring it to Europe this year.
Let’s hope they will be released over here too!
As to the minimum power consumption by CPU, I was able to have 4.1 Watts in IDLE state for 7745HX… the problem was GeForce experience, always doing something in background don’t letting go the power consumption less than 11 Watts 🤦♂️
Interesting!
@@NotebookcheckReviewsand another point, Lenovo packs these laptops with 1Rx16 Ram… I have replaced the Ram with 1Rx8 and got +30% to Ram write speed (51.5k -> 67K) in AIDA64 test :) unfortunately read/copy are still around 50K :(
my 5 year old i7 8750h consumes just 1.6 watts at idle.
HX this year are desktop CPUs, hence high idle power consumption. When it comes to 8 cores I wish they stuck to H\HS instead.
@@TabalugaDragon 100% agree! Unfortunately have bought the laptop already, and use it like desktop replacement. The only option is to buy 6800H or something similar with a bit more than half of performance 7745HX. Intel has similar consumption (I have tried 13650hx), also not so good choice :(

Hello!
Since the last few weeks, I have been researching a lot to decide between Lenovo Legion Slim 7i 13900H+4070, Legion Pro 5 13700HX+4070 and Legion Pro 5 7745HX+4070. My actual purpose of buying is music production, live music performance and gaming as well as CGI. Music does need a higher single core performance and therefore thinking about buying the Slim one as its 13900H has a higher clock speed. But I'm afraid because of it being slim, will it compete well against the other two laptops?
Can anyone please help come to a conclusion? Thank you so much!
If you travel a lot, I would seriously consider the slim 7 over the pros. It also feels a lot more premium. Our full review will be out on Sunday for the slim 7.

After waiting for almost a month for the Slim to be in stock again, I am out of time now. So it comes down to either 13700HX + RTX 4070, or 7745HX + RTX 4070 Legion 5 pros. Can you please suggest the best one for music production out of these two?

Mine has FCN on Intel (vise versa) and produces very annoying high frequency pitch mostly noticeable on low - average loads. Did you noticed it on AMD? I can hear it a bit on your sound samples. Wanted to hear AVC in comparison.

You will not see a big difference but the Intel CPU does run a bit cooler.
AMD for sure... less, but more powerful cores (enough for gaming). It's like going to a lady... You don't need many small dxxk's, you need one but a decent one. Intel runs cooler, but eats more W? @@NotebookcheckReviews that amazing! I searched for it and didn't find a single video.
1:01 You say you are testing an i9 and then go on to talk about the i7. What is going on here?
How does it not matter when the AMD chip clearly runs hotter? AMD's CPU constantly hits the mid-90s and when you have an option to go with Intel, get similar performance and keep those temps in low 80s, then there is a clear winner IMO. You shouldn't equivocate, people come to your videos to get advice on these specific questions and you just like to sit on a fence.
I gave you guys precisely that information, did I not? In addition, it seems like this is how these chips operate since most Zen4 CPUs we tested so far operate at a similar temperature, so I would not generally say it is bad per se.
And I prefer to give you guys our results so you can make up your own mind than to make our reviews all about my opinion. I understand if that is not decisive enough for some, but that is how we want to handle it.
@@NotebookcheckReviews And based on your final conclusion many of your viewers who are not tech savvy will get the AMD powered CPU who then will be heartbroken seeing CPU temperatures hitting high 90s on a new laptop. Later, they will spend a lot of time on the internet trying to find ways to bring those temperatures down and will be forced to make many visits to their local computer shops if its something then cant do themselves, and still the issue wont be resolved because lenovo already uses one of the best thermal pastes in their systems. This all could have been avoided if you had just steered them towards the better alternative in your "comparison review".
The final impact on the end user is not much different when a company misleads a customer by not clearly mentioning all the product info. For example, a manufacturer like MSI that doesn't clearly mention GPU power draw for their GPUs in the product info, I talked to 2 dejected people just today online who bought a MSI Cyborg with a 4060 and later realized that it is limited to just 45W. If the reviewer they had watched clearly mentioned that the 4060 in a MSI Cyborg is hobbled and had advised them to avoid MSI Cyborg because they would be leaving 33% performance on the table, they would not have to spend the next few days trying to return their product, if there is even an option for them to return.
Anyway, I think you should be more clear and offer better advice because not everybody is that informed who does thorough research, and its hard for many to form their own opinions and they come to online reviewers like you to get help, obviously, you think otherwise and thats alright. Have a good day.
I get your point, but I think this particular situation is very different from your example. Low TDP values will definitely impact the user, whereas high CPU temps (that are very common on a lot of different machines) will not. And it’s still the question if it’s actually that bad, since these chips are still running „at spec“
But I will of course take your feedback into account for our new videos! I will put more emphasis on temperature and high load behavior anyways in the future! And maybe we can do some more testing if there are any long-term problems with high CPU temps, or if it’s just the way manufacturers design their cooling solutions these days.
It’s just very difficult for us to do long-term tests!
Thanks a ton for your feedback tho, I really appreciate it when you guys take the time to keep us on our toes to reevaluate and question our information! These discussions are extremely valuable for all of us!
@@NotebookcheckReviews I disagree with the statement that high CPU temperature will not impact the user. The single biggest concern while using a high performance gaming laptop is how well it manages to cool the system to prevent thermal throttling. Every year companies pour so many resources to design better cooling systems and chassis. Cooling is the biggest problem in such a small form factor. If a laptop fails in that department then everything else simply does not matter. That is why any respected reviewer should spend a good chunk of time talking in depth about the thermals because 100 nits difference in screen brightness or a better wifi are secondary and irrelevant if the cooling is not on point in a gaming laptop.
Most CPUs today are rated to run at 100 degree C, so your statement that we are not certain about about the impact of running in high 90s on long term health and that it is not necessarily catastrophic which will fry the CPU may be true but we are absolutely certain that the laptop will 100% thermal throttle when it hits those high temperatures nearing thermal limit. A CPU that is running in mid 90s out of the box will reach that thermal limit within a month as it gets a little dirty and little dust particles get into the fans and grills. And nothing ruins a gaming experience more than stuttering caused by a thermal throttling CPU, all other specs don't mean anything and its a garbage experience.
Lenovo 5i with intel and 5 with AMD have the same chassis with the same cooling system so its definitely not a matter of a manufacturer designing a cooling system in two different ways, thus, the 15 deg C difference is only because of the different CPUs (and even if the cooling systems are different thats exactly what we are comparing and reviewing, we are trying to find out the better cooling design in order to avoid hitting thermal limits). Lets look at it another way, if you had a choice between these two systems where everything is similar including the CPU performance but one CPU runs just below 80 C, far away from thermal throttling limit and one in mid 90s already approaching that limit, which one would you choose? I personally would choose the cooler system, its a no-brainer decision because dealing with thermal throttling is the single biggest issue plaguing gaming laptop users around the world and is a nightmare to deal with. If a friend or family came to me for advice on choosing between those 2 systems, I would die before letting them choose the much hotter system. And I would offer the same advice if anyone asked the same question online. I simple cannot recommend a CPU running at 95 deg C when there is an alternative in the exact same machine with same power running at 80 deg C.
And that is the reason people trust youtube channels like "Gamers Nexus" and "Jaystwocents" over most others, if they reviewed these exact 2 machines, they would spend at least half of the review talking about the drastic difference between the thermals in two configurations with the same chassis and exact same cooling solution, they would not beat around the bush and equivocate and will tell it how it is like they are recommending to a friend because they care about their customers and don't mince words. I just wish you would recommend your viewers like you would recommend your friends and family if you want to gain long term trust.
Well, that's my opinion, anyway, you do you. All the best.

I tried both amd and intel version of Lenovo Legion Pro 5. I gotta go for amd. More cooler than intel. I got more fps on amd
The Amd is actually more cooler than the Intel? I'm still stuck on choosing which to choose...
Whooo, new video
💪🏻
It’s not 500 nits??
No, there is a 240Hz panel as an option that is supposedly 500 nits!
Love the red vibe in this video, even the shirt is red xD.
Happened by accident ;)
The choice is yours, but USB4/Thunderbolt is NOT. Why on Earth is Lenovo not allowing this port on any of 2023 laptops is such a stupid choice keeping me away from their machines
Seems like a weird cost saving measures. I do not get it either. The Legion Pro 7s do have thunderbolt tho!
Can you give me that wallpaper 😅😅
I found it on unsplash.com
Someone tell lenovo that this protruding island on the top of the lid completely ruins the design of the laptop
Maybe not everyone agrees with you?
@@NotebookcheckReviews Maybe. Let's see will be there any likes or not. P.s. thinkpad line design was destroyed by this notch, but this is only my opinion)
0:56 he says i7
But on screen it is shown i9
You are absolutely right, that should of course be the i7-13700hx
My 2021 model has a 500 nits 4ms display... What a downgrade this is
In fairness they also offer a 500 Nits 240Hz display as an option!
@@NotebookcheckReviews ok fair enough
shirt link ?
Only AMD 💥👍
Only watching not buying , like or comment
Thanks for watching!
great device but the display is crap for the price
Intel
Why? ;)
Children's headgear worn backwards and indoors by an adult. Opinion discarded.
Also, why even include gaming benchmarks in an "AMD version vs Intel version" video, when the two tested versions don't have the same GPUs.
Since my opinion is discarded because of my hat, I guess there is no point in answering your question?
eww at the price in euros...
Yepp 😑 but it was „on sale“ a few days ago … Lenovos pricing is super weird!
Whatever gets me the 4070 for cheaper
Fair enough. You will not have to make any significant compromises with either CPU platform.
Better bat time = ryzen
Better temp = intel
You choose
Pretty much 😅
What is what wallpaper for that laptop????

@@NotebookcheckReviews thanks man ill use that when ever I get a new machine
Which one is better RYZEN 7 7745HX or I7 13700HX ? which one should I buy, help me pls 🥲🥲🥲
The difference is minimal, so I would go with whichever is cheaper!
@@NotebookcheckReviews so which one should I buy legion 5i pro or 5 pro?tell me from your prospective pls
@@nishankjain5081itel is 5-7% better if you get and virsion for same price then get Intel if there's big difference in price then get amd
@NotebookcheckReviews which one to choose between legion 5 pro amd and asus rog strix16 i9 13780 4060
Tough one; I prefer the Legions design. Their chassis is a bit more subtle, and the port variety and arrangement are much more versatile.
What kind of display comes with this G16 config?
Alex
@@NotebookcheckReviews nebula display , qhd+
ok, well the G16 will have the better display then
@@NotebookcheckReviews whose performance is better
How do i buy one of these without any money 🤔🥲 do a video for that
I will, once I have a solution for that particular situation! 😅
