Interactions like this one are entirely the octopus's choice. It could easily flee and hide in another portion of the exhibit if it chose not to interact. If it were an aggressive interaction and the octopus was in “fight” mode, it would be capable of far more strength than it shows in this video and could inflict a painful bite.

    • @telaferrum
      @telaferrum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think not, actually, and not for the obvious reason that an octopus isn't gonna learn to play the drums like a person. Two thirds of an octopuses neurons are in their arms, and an octopus only gives high level commands to the arms. The arms kind of figure out the details of what to do on their own, and can perform very complex motions. But this also means they're not able to control fine detailed motions as well as humans, which could make it hard to keep a beat. They also lack proprioception, meaning they can't actually tell where their arms are without looking at them, though they are able to sense whether an arm is stretched out or not. They can tell the taste and texture of something using the arms, but not its shape without looking.
That's all just to say I think it's interesting how their arms work that way. Of course thinking seriously about an octopus playing drums you could say all sorts of silly stuff like sound not traveling as well under water.

Male giant Pacific octopuses have a hectocotlyus - a specialized arm used to transfer sperm to females. That modified arm has no suckers on its tip. So in order to tell male from female, we look at the third right arm tip and look for the presence or absence of suction cups.

It was utterly lovely to see, and the grace and intelligence of these creatures have captivated me ever since. The more I learn about them, the more I like them. I wish they lived longer!

I volunteered at this aquarium and sadly the tank that held this octopus is terribly small for such an intelligent animal to be held in. It rarely moves around and has nothing to do UNLESS it gets fed. Visitors comment on it's confined space and it's had that small tank since the aquarium was built over 25 years ago .They built a massive tank for open ocean fish...But the poor octopus is stuck in an outdated cramped tank. Sea turtles and other creatures had same problem. Not happy going there anymore and don't recommend it.

Octopi are largely solitary and territorial, they're one of a number of animals that are perfectly fine to raise in a large aquarium.
Aquariums in general are pretty benign, unless they're like SeaWorld, trying to do orca and dolphin exhibits. Always remember, your social needs are not the same as the social needs of a lobster or anemone. Don't anthropomorphize. Many simple creatures are at their happiest in a sheltered grotto with a consistent food supply and no predators.

I dove in the open ocean with a dive master who had a wonderful relationship with a very large octopus. This creature was playful, intelligent, curious and totally ready to engage us. She could have easily torn away our dive gear had she wanted. But as strong as she was she was gentle and trusting. I've never seen or felt anything like it. Imagine two thousand suckers over eight arms embracing your head, spine and legs all at the same time. Very weird but very wonderful. If you ever get the chance...go for it! You'll have a totally different perspective on life after it.

I live in Monterey and used to go to the aquarium , but not anymore . The handler clearly loves his job , which is obvious . Unfortunately , for such an intelligent animal , it has always been kept in a very small tank , which bothers alot of locals . They had turtles also in very tanks . If I was an octopus confined by myself , in a small tank , I'd certainly try to interact with anyone or anything that came by to break-up the isolation of not being able to swim around in my small tank. There hasn't been any change in tank size , for over 30 + years. They could put it in a larger tank with mentally stimulating games to play to get it's food . Instead , it sits beside a rock wall all day , with tourist wondering if it's real or not.

We fed scallops to baby manta rays no bigger than a small laptop -- put a scallop on your upturned palm, sink your hand 10 or 12 inches, as soon as your hand disappears under the baby manta you feel the scallop sucked up from your hand. ... There were 25 or 30 people feeding 50 or 60 of them. They had beautiful happy little faces that looked like flattened out dolphins. .... It was AMAZING, I get teary-eyed NOW thinking about it 30 years later.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium should have security or something that patrols around, I remember last time I went, in I believe 2013 or 2014, that octopus was pretty much just hiding in the corner, while wave after wave of people came by to take flash photos of the poor thing, despite "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" being posted on the glass. I felt so bad for it.

    • @miriamrobarts

This is also stupid, because if you're taking a photo through glass, the flash will just create a glare with the light reflecting off the glass. The best way to photograph through glass is to either use a polarizing filter to reduce reflections, or put the camera right against the glass.

I would love to pet an octopus.
I've had a fascination regarding octopi and squid since I was like 10 or 11, and I read Peter Benchly's 'the Beast,' a book about a giant squid who's normal deep water feeding ground gets messed up by humans, so it makes it's way to the surface, and finds out humans are extremely numerous and super easy to catch.
Peter Benchly wrote Jaws, so he's pretty good at telling a 'killer sea creature' story. There was a tv movie made based on the Beast, but I've never felt the need to watch it, since it looks pretty cheesy.
Great book tho, and since my relationship with the ocean was already on the rocks since I had read Jaws (and seen the movie) prior to cracking the Beast.
I haven't put a toe in the ocean since I was 11 years old. The last time I went in, my imagination had me seeing sharks everywhere. About halfway thru the day, I gave up, went to my towel and sat down and never, ever went near a beach again.
And I swear, I'll never go near the ocean so long as I live. People don't belong in it. The only thing we can possibly be in the vast, deep oceans of this world is fish food.

Beautiful creatures!🐙 And, very smart and mysterious! Of course, I also think tarantulas are beautiful creatures and have two of them. They're easy to care for and live a long time.🕷

I have a Chilean Rose & I love her. Bitten all the time by pet cats, but Miss Scarlett, never. Not once in over a decade! Like spiders, those other eight-legged cuties, octopuses are coming to be seen as highly intelligent, which is something both species deserve. 🕷️🐙

I used to live in Pacific Grove California and worked in Monterey California on Cannery Row, on my lunch brakes I used to go and visit this octopus. He was quite exquisite ! I had purchased a yearly pass for the aquarium and took full advantage of it.

When it's getting up close and personal, like that, is there a risk that it will bite? Does it know the difference between friend and food? Does it care or can it even help itself? Do they like finger food?

    • @grisflyt

It's probably little risk. Octopuses are quite intelligent and can tell food from not food. It is a wild animal and such does have strong instincts. But, again, if it doesn't feel threatened there should be little risk. A general rule is to not handle large wild animals on your own.

The evolved from Cambrian sea protosnails called Monoplacophora loosely related to current snails and slugs (Gastropoda). We know that because we have mitochondrial and nuclear DNA marker sequences to prove that. No god needed for that. Just time, cause-effect and survival of the fittest. If you now say that god created Monoplacophora 500 million years ago, then you should know that those also have ancestors. You can continue that until the very big bang. That's where it becomes a little bit difficult. While quantum physics shows that you can have an universe from nothing, it's still so hard to grasp that even most scientists are not happy with that reasoning. You can use god to fill the gaps until this gap of knowledge is also filled with data and facts.
