My father was a fisherman when he was young, and he used to take us out at night on his small longtail boat in southern Thailand. It was very scary at first but we get used to it. I cannot imagine how scary it is deep below the sea.
I live in Thailand. I LOVE riding in those longtails! They’re like hotrods! And I bet you must have liked those giant monitor lizards in the canals! Super cool.
I think there are creature's in our oceans depths that dwarf the largest creature's we've ever discovered. I cant think of anything scarier than being stranded in the ocean at night with no moon....
those are not the only 2 videos of giant squid alive, unless I head you misspeak, in which forgive me. There is a video of a Giant squid in Japan swimming near the surface, and one man went swimming along side it. perhaps that one was at death's door too because they usually don't swim near the surface, right?
@@mcgoo721no, they mean humanity as a whole. There are plenty of instances of giant squid on camera, but they're usually dying by that point. Also, it should be noted that there are several species besides the Giant and Colossal squids that are pretty big and can be mistaken for one. Like the above mentioned Taningia Danae, Dosidicus Gigas, Magnapinna and Onykia Robusta, trick is filming them in their own habitat, a mile or more down. That's happened barely a handful of times. While Giant Squids exist in every ocean. The range of Colossal Squids is a lot smaller, making it even more difficult to find one in its natural habitat, the deep cold waters of the Antarctic.
@@hansakkerman2611There are more than just 2 instances. I’m not sure where they got that number from. Plus I don’t think anyone out there would mix up a magnapinna squid for a giant squid 😂
Or they could, I don't know, look it up? Don't get me wrong, I know it can be annoying or frustrating. I have to look up lbs to kg, etc quite a bit as an American who loves science docs. When I hear an amount I look it up. It takes seconds, surely others can do that, no? Again, not trying to be rude to you. 😁 👍
As a kid I hoped to be alive when the giant squid was caught on film in its natural habitat. I'm an adult now, and I hope to see footage of a live colossal squid in its natural habitat.
I'm trying to figure out why certain people need to 'protect' the giant and The colossal squids? The only threat are certain humans but only a small, small handful of humans need an astronomical amount of funds to provide the means to go phantoms below the sea and try to capture, collect or even tag the squid! Leave the squid alone! Observe them in their natural habitat? Sure. Otherwise leave them alone.
I remember reading an article about a sonar navy vessel being attacked by something very large while out on manuvers in a part of the ocean that is very deep. There was a special rubber-like coating on their transponder, which was actually built into the ship's hull. It didn't work correctly after the attack. They took the ship back to port and discovered very large hook like teeth embedded into the rubber, which screwed up the sonar signal. After removing these things, they repaired the rubber and went back to sea. In the meantime, the Marine biologist analyzed the hooks to discover what they belonged to. They concluded that they belonged to a very large Squid. They compared them to know sizes of squid and determined that the squid was likely about one hundred twenty feet long, at least, and they didn't know what species it was. I read this very long ago, and I might be mistaken about the length, but I was studying marine biology at the time, back in the early 1970's, and do remember very clearly that it was well over a hundred feet long. This happened in the Pacific Ocean, and I remember that we were going diving off the Santa Cruz coast in the Pacific at night, looking for Squid. Humbolt Squid. There had been a report of commercial fishing boats catching Humboldt squids in their nets shortly before. My mom gave me the article and asked me if I really wanted to go diving at night out there, knowing that dangerous critters were in there with me. I said, absolutely! They couldn't be any more dangerous than the animals on our farm in the woods. By the way, we didn't see any squids at all. Only lots of fish feeding on krill, sharks, and some crabs, octopuses, urchins and sea anemones at the bottom. We were not in really deep waters where they took us. They claimed that they saw squid at the surface with their lights while bringing in their nets. More recently, I have been studying Sperm Whales. There are reports about some of these Whales having scars and damage from Squids tentacle hooks sugesting the size of some of the hooks damage putting the squids length the same or longer the the whales. Some of the Whaling museums have tentacles hooks recovered from Sperm Whales long ago, that are much larger than any of them found today. Given that Whale populations are still recovering from the mass Whaling industry days long ago, one would think that the Squid populations would have grown because of a lack of predators. One thing is for sure. There is still MOST OF THE OCEANS, to discover and explore, and there are still some large surprises to see. We actually know more about space than we do about our oceans, but I'm sure that our worlds military submarines have discovered much that they will never reveal to the public unless there is no choice about it, like Godzilla, or something similar.
Not monsters? I don't know about that if you were swimming or diving and encountered a healthy specimen out looking for a meal you would have a nightmare of a monster on your hands I can assure you of that. I would rather see a Great White coming at me then a massive squid. Loved the content!
I wonder where the missing 5 Seconds went? From 11:35 to 11:40, it could’ve been slightly modified as an intro, oh well I guess it was not to be. 4:09 Also 32 Feet Long VS 43 Feet Long is close to 50 Feet Long VS 66 Feet Long, I am of course referring to the Giant Squid and Colossal Squid’s lengths prospectively with the Giant Squid being the longest specimen.
Moby Dick. Ishmael said if you see giant squid, you see the whales and vice versus. They were only interested in the whales. Did NOT want to encounter the squid if they could help it
I think that’s just estimated. They took base proportions from the ones found and probably measured the beaks collected over the years to determine other sizes (if I had to guess).
The ocean is a world all on its own. It's so facsinating. And we haven't even explored the depths of our own oceans yet we went to the moon! It kinda makes me sad that because of us, their world is affected. We dump so much junk and chemicals in the ocean but it's literally what they breathe in. It's so unfair that we plunder their food supply and damage their ecosystem and so much of that "seafood" is actually wasted and not even eaten.
QUESTION! Why can't you just put a camera capable of high pressure, with wifi, with night vision (i don't know if that will work underwater) and with rechargeable battery powered by bladeless wheel that will spin while the giant squid swims to charge it endlessly. Then it sends its footage tru livestream or uploading it in internet like how we send satelites to other planets.
How large are Octopods? Do Giant Octopuses generally not exist today? Also, is the Loch Ness Moster a Plesiosaur, an amphibian, or another sexually active species of marine reptile, possibly a descendant of the original Plesiosaur or Mosasaur?
We have the worlds biggest octopi here near me they can get as big as 12-20 feet. That's their average size range so add 10 feet for extremes. People come from all over the world to dive in the Hood Canal to see them and film them. Most don't really like to interact with people so I imagine humans are just paparazzi down there being a nuisance following them around everywhere. Some of the giant pacifics do like to interact, though. They have accidentally drowned at least one person by being overly curious and taking regulator out of a divers mouth. Also I THINK they are venomous to a degree but they don't usually bite/attack people.
Also if you play ARK: Survival Evolved, name your Plesiosaur females Nessi and all Mosasaur females Nessy. Name all the males Ogopogo. All I have for you on good ol' Nessi and Ogopogo.
Colossal squid have never been filmed at depth, in their natural habitat, before. to learn about the species and their natural behaviors and lives we need to film them at depth.
Am i the only one who underwhelmed by the size colossal squid. They said its huge, but based on the carcasses, it looks like the size of a small kayak.
I have always considered the NASA budget to be bloated and wasteful and think we would have been better served had we explored the oceans vs space. Yet we want to go to another planet and start affecting its ecology when we don't even know and understand our own planet, completely. smh
It was filmed, yes. But it was not in its natural habitat of the deep dark ocean depths. It was a vital video, but the individual was dying. Sometimes, deep sea creatures float up to the surface when they are at the end of their lives.

Giant squid all day. His portions are just right. Colossal squid fans might not like it but the giant squid is the ideal squid body.

I think armored squid deserved to be on the top 5
Colossal looks more mythic though

I could be wrong but it sounds like they may have meant that they themselves, ocean, have only been able to catch the squids on film twice.

They need to start putting cameras on sperm whales to find and see these giant squid
Nearly impossible to do. Sperm whales are rarely tagged, putting a camera on them is way harder
Reality freaks me out more than any horror or scifi movie.
not that dumpling squid though, I want it to like me.
