    How can Silver Quill be so quotable? I'm starting to collect my favorite quotes from him to share with my friends to try to get them interested in these videos, and now I've had to add "Your discomfort is nectar" to that list. I'm glad I found this channel, since his reviews never fail to entertain. He even manages to make bathroom humor entertaining.

    Normally I would agree with you on how disappointingly easy it was to figure out the culprit, Silver, but I actually don't mind it in this case. The show staff even joked about how the new character specifically made for the episode was obviously the villain. Personally I think the mystery itself isn't important here but rather the fun of Rarity and Rainbow figuring out the mystery with the noir style, the references, the interactions off one another, the comedy, etc.

      I actually didn't see it coming, because his resemblance to Rainbow distracted me. He's the same shade of blue, his hair, though grey, still has stripes like it used to be rainbow coloured, and his eyes are the same colour as her dad's eyes. I wasn't thinking 'villain', I was thinking 'is there going to be a reveal that he's her uncle or something?'

    Dear Firebrand and Silver
    Hear hear! I agree the military, and I mean ALL forms of military, get too bad a press or are fladerized beyond belief by some writers, media and common misconception. I'm not a military man but I am a Mediaeval reenactor, portraying a man-at-arms during the Wars of the Roses (or as it was known originally, the War of the Cousins), and with what I've learned about arms and armour alone, I'm still shocked to see some myths about them persist.
    Plate Armour being so heavy and stiff a Knight couldn't get back on his horse? Total myth. A medieval army made up of down trodden peasants and overbearing Knights? Only in the early Middle Ages and even then all soldiers got basic body armour, they were all required to have at least padded armour, a pole arm and a side arm such as an axe or sword. Roman army equipment remaining the same throughout its 1000+ year history? Have you even read a history book? And that's just stracthing the surface. One day I would love to see a military character, or the military in general, in any medium, time period, country, world or whatever treated with intelligence and respect.
    I'm not saying all military institutions are perfect, far from it, there have been plenty of people in a military or warrior profession who have been incompetant, cruel, bloodthirsty, stone-faced or corrupt, but that doesn't mean that's the entire organisation as a whole. Even the Roman Praetorian guard and Templar Order, the embodiments of cruelty and corruption in popular media, started of or developed into competant and sometimes highly benevolant organisations. The Templars were bankers and brought trade and tolerance to the Holy Land, the Praetorians started of as loyal bodyguards (at least until the Emperor himself threatened the Empire with his insanity (Caligula and Nero being prime examples.)
    Long story short, an organisation or group isn't one person, so stop treating them like they are!
    Oh and great After the Fact Silver, you were very funny too....
    Sincerely
    Cannicus

      @Kartoffelkamm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really agree with you. I´m not a military man either, not a medieval re-enactor, but I still dislike how the military is represented across media.
      That´s why, in one of my fanfictions over on DeviantArt, there is a royal guard that´s actually competent.
      Sure, the first impression is when the captain of the royal guard doesn´t recognize his kingdom´s crown princess, but she´s been gone for the past 4 years and changed a lot.
      Still, these guards are the most capable I´ve seen in media thus far. Yes, they do get overwhelmed at some point, but rather than admitting defeat and surrendering, they send their fastest runner to get reinforcements, and do whatever it takes to hold their ground in the meantime.
      When help, in form of their queen, arrives, they inform her of anything she might need to know, and when a fortune-teller predicts the queen´s apparent demise, they ignore her orders to inform her of the impending threat.
      When someone from another kingdom literally drops in, they gather around the stranger in two rows, one facing the townspeople, in order to keep them calm and safe, and one facing the stranger. They don´t react with hostility, but with caution.
      Sure, I can´t really show much of these guards without it feeling forced, but they have several different authorities to respond to, should their queen be unable to give orders directly.
      Everything Firebrand said the royal guards in MLP are doing wrong went into the guards in my fanfiction, and I guess when I get back to writing MLP related stuff, I might just represent these guards in a good light, too.
      Maybe they deal with a timberwolf crisis or something.

      My grandpa was military. My dad was born in a base. So I understand. Though I must point out that until now the wonder bolts were just a goal in the show. So the writers aren't sure what to do with them now.

      Heck, even the 2014 Godzilla movie did a better representation of the military, and the only reason they were useless is because militaries doing jack diddly squat to Godzilla (or any Kaiju in general) is kinda the norm in the franchise.

  • @cadence4527

    Buckingham Palace guards are the inspiration behind the cold, statue like guards we see in modern media. I've been to every kind of military base minimum security where a civilian can easily get permission to go on base, to moderate security where they won't let you go on base, but if you want to get a picture in front of the static display a kind officer will sponsor you past the gate to do so, to the maximum security base where they'll confiscate your drivers license while you go on base to turn around. In no way have any of the guards at these gates been incompetent...with the exception of not being able to give you directions back to town. Having grown up in a military rich town, i have a deep respect for military units and I agree with firebrand. They aren't being shown in a positive or accurate light in MLP. For one, between the Blue Angles and the Thunderbirds, the Blue Angles are the more elite team and that's coming from a Thunderbirds fan. Its sad to see their pony equals are not so equal in eliteness. In all honesty, they're really just a bunch of show ponies which is NOT what the Blue Angles are. In fact, I was shocked to hear that's who they were based on, aside from their costumes, I really don't see it.

      Elise Leon We all know it was messed up in areas but I still like Yu-gi-oh the original series the way it is. I got bits of season 0 but I wasn't stuck on it and part of me thinks the fact the Duel monster's game wasn't in it was a big fact of it not being as strong. I'd also like to point out Dan Green has done other work besides Yugioh, he voiced Knuckles and at one point replaced the original Mewtwo voice actor while also voicing Entei. I know he has other acting credits too, so if it affects the way'd you view Yami, just remember Knuckles and you'll never look at Yami the same way again.

    I would like to bring up a point to the Equestrian Guards as well as the Royal Guards. Equestria as a whole has been peaceful for a long time, so the Equestria Military is probally very underfunded and undermanned, not a good combination. As for the Royal Guard, of course they would be useless in a crisis, they are mainly a ceremonial unit, created for show more then anything else. Now I would like to see a good portrayal in the series, but I think it should be along the lines of the current Equestria military realizing they need to start being more effective and working to improve their condition.

      @Kelaiah01 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Excellent points. But its been some years since Equestria has started to become "less peaceful", so I think the guards/soldiers need to wisen up. If somepony points out those reasons for why the soldiers have been useless so many times in the same episode where they finally have a moment of glory, then that will, in my mind, make up for all their previous shortcomings.

    • @7Seraphem7
      @7Seraphem7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelaiah01
      How many years has it actually been? At a minimum, it's only been three years since NMM's return, possibly four. And all the threats have been ones beyond their scope to deal with in any case.
      I go with the idea from My Little Denarians, that the Guards main purpose beyond ceremonial looking pretty and being seen, is to simply handle crowd control during these sorts of things. To evacuate/keep back the civilians as best they can while the Princesses/Mane 6 deal with it. Nopony actually expects them to face those kinds of things directly.

    • @largo778
      @largo778 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and that's the point I'm trying to get across. The Equestria Military and the Royal Guard spacifically have become nothing more that over dressed Mall Cops. The Wonderbolts have a long rich history but are doing nothing more that airshows now. Honestly we don't even know what their training is like or how long it takes. For all we know it could be "Oh, you have the guard cutie mark, here's your helmet, now go stand in front of that door for hours".
      That's not to say they don't have a porpous. Shining Armor, despite being, well, Shining Armor, was also powering the barrier that protects Canterlot. He had a defined role in the Equestria Military, living battery. Unfortunatly that's all we've really seen of the Equestria Military actually having a plan of some sort.

    • @7Seraphem7
      @7Seraphem7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      largo778
      Except they really haven't had a "Long rich history" The EUP Guard (which we can safely assume were the origins of the current Guard more or less, Weren't even created because of any real threat, it was just a response to loosing one Princess, and so ponies wanting to feel like they were doing something to keep the other safe. So really, their whole history has basically been to put on a good show for the public to make them feel safe that they are around and protecting the Princess... while not really able to do anything to that effect since any threat that would be a danger to her, is way above their league to deal with.
      Which I am not saying means individual guardsponies are badasses, and won't fight with everything they have to protect their Princess, and that should it come to it, they could shape up real fast and do what it takes. But, with a history like that, it does make being rather.. less then stellar compared to other militaries perfectly understandable.

    It's telling that the simplest form of storytelling is to keep the main protagonists capable of many things and romanticizing them to beyond realistic expectations, and everyone else is underused or imcompetent. That doesn't do the Royal Guard any favors, especially since they're all males, characters that haven't had the best representation in this show.

    I don't think it's horrible that Rarity flirts a little and uses flattery to get her way. It makes the other pony feel good about themselves and ia FAR better than other tactics like being confrontational with the delivery pony for messing up and threatening to complain to his boss, which she has a right to do, assuming the packages were labeled correctly. It's not like she uses flirtation to string along a single stallion she has no interest in and make him believe they'll have a relationship when she's really just using him. That would be cruel.
    Yes, she's being a little manipulative, but you know what? We manipulate each other pretty much every day to get what we want, and it's not harmful. We just don't usually call it manipulation. Haven't you ever done someone a favor to soften them up when you intend on asking them for a favor shortly afterwards? Or complimented someone before asking them for something? Even seemingly considerate things, like asking someone nicely, even when you're frustrated and want to make demands can be manipulative, if you're not being nice for their sake, but because asking nicely is more likely to get you what you want, that's manipulation. Rarity's not doing anything wrong. Perhaps a tad inconsiderate, but that delivery pony is not helpless. If he was that busy and really couldn't do it, he could have just said no.

    That rant of commander firebrand really reminded me of Star wars Clone Wars. It is one of the few series that I know of that really portrays soldiers as individual characters. Even though they are all genetically identical and raised identically they are still different.
    One scene especially when they are suspicious that one of a squad is a traitor. The first one is timid and shy and chokes up when they pressure him. So much so that another squad member has to answer for him but after that he answers the questions. He was busy cleaning his weapon like he does after every mission. The second one is laid back and somewhat informal, he uses all the correct ettiquete but has a informal voice about it and is casual even though he's talking with his superiors. He went right away to the mess hall to eat something and procrastinated a little on his duties therefore. The third one is also laid back but a little more formal and is quite supportive (he helped out the first one) and also stumbled a little on his words when they pressured him. He did his duties and then joined the second one in the mess hall. The fourth one is very formal and proves his innocence easily and casually while keeping a polite tone. He was wounded in the last battle so was in the infirmary. Finally the fifth one is quite eccentric, he's a loner mostly and spend the entire time after the mission on his own. When they pressure him he first tries to deny it but then admits that he collects enemy battlefield scrap to make jewelry as a form of revenge for his fallen comrades (it's not permitted to pick up battlefield stuff though). The culprit ends up being the lieutenant of them who thinks the soldiers are only slaves as they are completely submissive to the jedi who occupy almost all of the high ranks.
    Even though the scene is only 4 minutes long and none of them are named they still all have personality.
    Another very noteworthy scene is when 2 scout troopers come across a little girl when on patrol. The first one gives her some food as she looks starved which causes her to follow them through the ruined and empty town. The second one though doesn't approve and thinks of it only as a distraction. They accidentally stumble upon her house which is totally destroyed and seeing that the girl starts crying. The first scout who gave her the food sees that and comforts her, the second one looks around but can't bring himself to disapprove of it. Then they suddenly are attacked and are forced to barricade themselves inside the ruined house. The little girl shows them an underground passage which leads them out. Their commander is upset they let themselves be distracted but their general is more interested in the girl and how she was able to lead those soldiers through the tunnels. Fortunately he can speak her language and together they free her father.
    When they have to leave she waves them goodbye and keeps saying "Nairo". The soldiers ask their general what that means and he says it means "brother" to which they are quite moved.
    Or the time when they were put under the command of another general who threw their lives away recklessly and showed them no respect and they eventually rebelled. Also the time when you see 3 rookie soldiers kind of partying after they have been in a outpost where nothing has happened at all for over 3 months and they complain they are bored out of their minds.
    Noteworthy individuals are the rough but fair Rex who is known for doing the unorthodox and offer suggestions to his superiors. The very textbook Cody who is sometimes seen as annoying but always has a plan. The very impulsive and individualistic Fives who cares deeply about his comrades. The hyperaggressive and joking Hardcase. The stern but very caring Jessie. The openhearted and also sarcastic Waxer. The extremely obedient and almost blindly loyal Dogma. The are many more.

    That first scene before the OP is one I just really love. Something about it just clicks with me. Sassy Saddles really feels like a character how she is perturbed by Rarity's enthusiasm but then goes with it. How she talks in a very gossipy voice about rumors, how she does almost anything with grace and no annoyance.
    Also Rarity and Rainbow really do feel like friends and they rarely interact.
    It does make me kind of sad that Sassy Saddles never got another real scene again.

    9:05
    Half-Right, the Primary Example of that being the Queen's Royal Guards in Buckingham Palace, while they do serve as the Queen's Protectors therefore being Actual Royal Army Soldiers, they also serve Propaganda Purposes.
    Another Example would be the Guards guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, except in this case they're guarding the Tomb 24/7 instead of just 2 to 4 Hour Shifts for the Queen's Royal Guards.
    Both also undergo the Changing of the Guard, a Ceremonial Ritual that rotates the Guard Shifts between the Old and New Batches of Sentries.
    Because this is supposed to be Extremely Ceremonial, No Soldier would probably be allowed to act like an Ordinary Human Being at that time, as Discipline would be the Highest at that point.
    This is just my Opinion so don't take it Personally, I'm not a Soldier but I am interested in those kinds of stuff and what Actual Soldiers perform in their Duties.

    I'm glad that Firebrand's annoyed at the Wonderbolts. They're self-centered, narcissistic, and egotistical and they don't really redeem themselves of being that. I really didn't get why a lot of people with military families or people who are in the military would ever like them as a representation. Maybe in season 1 when they had nothing wrong with their personalities, but they keep getting progressively more dickish; especially in the last episode they were in. The guards are bad at being protectors but at least they aren't jerks like the Wonderbolts have been.

    **After watching** Hmm...I like it, but...HOLD IT!!!
    You described that you had your doubts about Wind Rider when they were at the cake store. But what if I told you that your doubts were in fact right!!!...OBJECTION!!!
    The mare described was not Wind Rider. The culprit was really a pony connected to the Wonderbolts, a pony with a raspy voice, a pony with a grudge against Rainbow Dash. And that can only be one mare...Lightning Dust!!! TAKE THAT!!!

    +FOB Equestria , +MLP-Silver-Quill ... Could it be that the degradation of Equestrian Military is due to long periods of peace and little to now use? It could be also be due to the fact that their Military usually stands no chance against the Periodic "Boss" fight, which inevitably gets solved by the more experienced Celestia.
    And could it be said that when faced with armies, they could actually (sorta) fight, like in starlights changed timelines. Maybe after so long of a world without war, they have become lazy, and are just out of practice.
    If we look at History... we can see that at times, long periods of peace make countries vulnerable.
    I would certainly like to hear your guys thoughts that!

    In my opinion, I think the reason that the Wonderbolts and the equestrian royal guard are the way they are in the show is because they're NOT the main characters. Or in a better term, not the center focus of the show.
    The show has been dedicated to not only sell toys, but by making adventures for the mane six and building up their character development with simple lessons that are designed for children, disregarding Slice of Life, Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes, and just general fun episodes. The mane six are the focus and not the side characters, especially during seasons 1 and 2.
    Sure in later seasons there have been episodes where they introduce new characters with interesting personalities and they sometimes come back in later episodes, and yes, they sometimes also contribute to the character development of the mane six, but that's it.
    I think the reason they exist is because there has to be some sort of military involvement in the show. To show that we don't always have to rely on the mane six to save the world. Sure some actual activity from them and some usefulness would have been nice, but at this point, no one cares. And apparently so does Hasbro.
    Or maybe Hasbro is afraid that if they show that the equestrian military is not as stone cold and useless as they are, then kids will be convinced that joining the Army will actually be a fun time, and parents will be worried that they'll get themselves killed. And then come the enormous lawsuits.
    Then again, who knows. Maybe Hasbro will one day start to care and will surprise us later in the future.

    9:30 As somebody who doesn’t know anybody in the military, I do think it’s a shame there aren’t more depictions of the Armed Forces (and the other parts of the military complex) in art. I’m a little ashamed to admit I find it kinda creepy that anyone would want to serve, but that’s only because the culture I’ve grown up in depicts enlisting in the army as akin to subjecting oneself to ritualistic brainwashing. Any art that depicts the military in a positive light tends to be pretty... well... propagandistic. See every Michael Bay movie, ever. Shit, isn’t that a great example-michael Bay may love the military, but he has no respect for how he depicts soldiers, portreying them as petty assholes incapable of feeling unless it directly involves soldier stuff. From what I’ve heard, anyway.
    What I’m saying is I should watch that thing you mentioned, Commander Firebrand. (What is the abbreviation for Commander? Comm.?)
