I grew up in Spanish Town and lived at 31 King St. My grandmother Enid Wilson was once the Registrar General of the Record Office. My grandfather Leo “Pope” Wilson was the Paymaster General & the Organist at the Cathedral Church. Thanks for the history lesson.
Spanish Town is a treasure that we neglected that's why criminals took it over just imagine the revenue that could come from that city with good investments
Loving this parish series please do Portland! Also, you touched on it a bit but I would love to hear about Jamaica’s pirate history. Thank you for the quality content🇯🇲
i have never been to Spanish Town, but will visit if I ever make it to Jamaica. Interesting history that I do not remember ever learning in school. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this history, Alexx. Thank you.
I've always enjoyed watching documentaries and often expressed my wish that someone would make good quality documentaries about our region (it's easy to find history of Europe, etc). This was very informative. Thank you. Keep up the excellent work.
I too was born and grew up in Spanish Town and enjoy the history of my home Town. Left Jamaica 1977 and would love to return, but the new breed of native, not knowing its history, introduced crimes and violence to a once peaceful Town.
Sir Alexx this is the first time I ever heard of female pirates when you mentioned Anne Bonny and Mary Read. This video is very educational. Thanks again to you and Team Elite. Where are the Primary School teachers liking this video.
@@HummingbirdJa I am sorry Patricia they don't, in fact they CANNOT. We, a FREE people of JAMAICA is forced to uphold the remnants of our colonial master ENGLAND. The teachers are only "authorized" to teach what the Tertiary Instititions taught them and what the Ministry of Education, Jamaica(ENGLAND) approved for the curriculum. None of our successive government has ever sought to bring about an INDEPENDENT JAMAICA!
@@HummingbirdJa let's not beat around the bush here. Both political parties are responsible for the state of our nation. Every single polititian I know has joined and maintained a monopoly of governance - GARRISON POLITICS, and until every hard working, honest Jamaican stop voting for everyone of these politicians it will never stop. The Constitution allows for citizens to abstain from voting if they do not see a viable candidate. Or you can walk into the voting centers across the island and draw a line through your ballot in a show of protest. The result will be a Voided Election but it will send the true message that we need a new breed of PERFORMANCE POLITITIANS.
Spanish Town also called Santiago de la vega. Has rich history not only was it a Taino village but became a cattle ranch. The earliest ranching culture in the Americas started there. Vaqueros or cowboys worked that area with long horn cattle and Andalusian horse's. Bullfighting was also a weekend sport in early Spanish Town. The first black catholic priest was there at the church. Spanish music was developed into a creole style there. We are the first cowboys not Mexico or America.
Am starting to like this channel these are the things they should teach our kids n stop teach them a history that is not ours I like in my community in Jamaica for years n I was never thought about the history of my community are parish
Half that story, as I listen, is filled in by non-euro-centric rasta people. I have spent 3 separate portions a time in, Half Way Tree, Irishtown at Strawberry Hill, Sp.colonial manse, and weeks upon Stony Hill, jus below Barrington Levy’s house. One stay in Negril, near Kaiser’s place. No doubt one of the best history lessons, my reggae music partner, coulda ever teach, was complete, today, when I saw Bullocks street, inna Spanishtown, my singa, was ‘Ras’ Jahn Bullock, fr. Boston.. we played roots music, for 35 years, recorded 2 albums, thanks to Bob, Colin Leslie, and Errol Brown.. Loose Caboose🇲🇱!
It was Juan de Esquivel who did it Christopher Columbus did in 1506 and he discovered Jamaica in 1494, it was the conquistador Juan de Esquivel who settle it. But good content.
Again,I thank you on SPANISH TOWN,yes there were many historic buildings, Some still exists, some years ago it came out that whomever statue, occupies ‘RODNEY’ in NOT HIM,that statue was sent by mistake, so RODNEY,,exists somewhere, other than JAMAICA !, an accident by chance,,, and so it goes,!,, ,,,,;;;🏴🇬🇧🇯🇲🇯🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
it is a shame how this important part of our history has been left to decay and the area is now essentially a ghetto when it could have been an attraction earning money for the country and educating our people. Alex what has happened to the Arawak village that used to be there, also the nearby arawak museum? This area should be cleaned up, traffic diverted and the buildings restored. So sad.
Oliver Cromwell had no desire for the capture of Jamaica he actually wanted Hispaniola which is today’s Dominican Republic & Haiti . Hispaniola was well defended by the Spanish so Admiral William Penn & Admiral Robert Venables went for the less defended island of Jamaica which they stole from the Spanish !
Miss Barnes I suggest that you go back & listen to the video & to what is said about the strategic importance of Jamaica. You know what, don’t bother, just keep on doing what you’re doing !
They Black that came on ships was coming from Ireland whales Scotland very few whites they were sent to Barbados from their they the British sent the to various other island but Barbados was the home to the British landing in the islands... one ???? People if Cromwell sent 350 thousands people to Barbados n they were WHITE then y r the islands from them time up to now is still 90% Blacks???? Spanish town is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica. NOT western hemisphere
A simple google search will prove that
Yup that title belongs to La ciudad primada de América aka Santo Domingo capital of 🇩🇴
