If this man doesn’t become the gold standard of pop drumming, the industry itself will have shot itself in the foot. Imagine how many more people you could court to pop albums simply by having someone like Luke do the work instead of a producer with a looped beat program. Reminds me of a time where pop artists had full bands with them. Luke Holland has the potential, talent and writing chops to be this generations Sugarfoot in terms of being an absolute pop drumming genius.
This is such a beastly performance. Probably watched it a couple dozen times and it’s still just as good as the first time I heard it. Virtuoso level drumming right here.
Just watched through a ton of Luke's videos from when he started posting to now... Biggest thing I noticed is that it's not about just jamming as much complexity in as possible for the hell of it. His early videos he compromised timing and cleanliness for complexity. Now he just knows exactly how to make the drums fit and everything makes sense in the context of the song. Still complex as shit, but just so much cleaner and purpose driven.
It’s actually a cool thing to see out of a lot of new virtuoso drummers. WAY fewer drums and just more creative use of a much smaller kit. Compare Luke or Clay A’s kit to like Mike Portnoy or Neal Peart and it’s such a night and day difference. It’s cool seeing a “less is more” attitude start to emerge from newer drummers. And I bet their roadies and drum techs are extremely thankful as well. Lol If I was given the choice of setting up and transporting Luke’s kit, or Neal’s, I know which one I’d be picking. Lol
