Does banning Chinese electric vehicles work? Not really, because Tesla would just dominate the market instead. How about banning Tesla? Still no, because the EU’s software industry is lagging, and it doesn’t have enough skilled software engineers. Even blocking other automakers from entering the EU would only delay the decline of the traditional car industry. Worse, it could push EU carmakers to rely on trade barriers for easy profits instead of investing in new energy vehicles, which is basically slow-motion suicide. The full electrification and digitization of cars require strong software capabilities. But the EU has fallen behind in the digital age-it doesn’t have its own major internet companies. Meanwhile, China has Tencent, Alibaba, TikTok, and Huawei, and the U.S. has Google, Apple, Facebook, TH-cam, Oracle, and Microsoft. These companies have cultivated a deep pool of top-notch software engineers. In contrast, almost all of the EU’s internet platforms are dominated by U.S. companies, from browsers and search engines to social media platforms, databases, and operating systems-all American. This leaves the EU far behind both China and the U.S. in software capability, putting it at a significant disadvantage in the digitization of cars, where falling behind at one step means falling further behind at every step.
