Agreed, she is stunning, I'm 60 too and remember all this at the time... Caroline was very gracious dealing with some of these questions and comments. The press could have destroyed her career and personally but she showed up and stayed strong! Good for her! and good on her family for their support.
@@traceyreid4585 Me 3!! I am 60! This is my first time watching this episode of Phil, may he R.I.P. Phil was a kind person, and yes, my dear you are quite lovely! Much Blessings to you!!
Ms Cossey, you were the first trans person I remember having a huge impact on me and educating me on your situation. Thank you for being a warrior in an era when there was no support for trans people. You are a hero.
@I'm Tired Of It Too Just to give you a little perspective, trans people who pass effortlessly as the opposite sex (like Caroline and myself) don't need to be loud, obnoxious and volatile, because we don't need to fight for anything. No one gives us sh**... it's the people that don't pass, that look like "men in dresses" that need to be loud and defensive... why? Because people are giving them sh** left and right. Your issue is not with "modern trans people" you're issue is with people who don't pass...... and look at it this way, a lot of trans people can't pass as the opposite sex because they don't have the money or resources to do so. They can't afford hormones or expensive surgeries. Think before you categorize us as "confused," because often there are bigger issues at play. I have the privilege to live my life as a woman, without anyone realizing I'm male... but what if I did look like a man in a dress? I would be confused... I WAS confused. I was loud too back then... give us some slack.
The ginger feminist was raging at Tulas beauty, grace, poise and sense of humor. While trying to be pro women she also made it seem as if women who flirt as “less then” other women.

@@sarahwestmusic I understand you have what is called an opinion. The fact is she was born INTER-sexed. She had the attributes of both sexes. I was about to say! Even the unsupportive people back in those days atleast tried to come off as respectful to Tula, nowadays most people don’t consider anyone trans as human.
It's hard to believe how long ago this was! I took a father/son trip to New York City in June 1990. It's the only time in my life I traveled alone with my Dad. We were at NBC Studios taking a tour when a producer opened a hallway door and randomly chose us as recipients of last-minute tickets to the Phil Donahue Show. As a young gay man, Phil was one of my heroes. Dad was the son of a Baptist minister, and we had no idea what guest was in store for us. It was awkward, but one of those benchmark moments of life. Until now, I've never seen the broadcast! Decades later, after I married my partner of 20+ years during a return trip to Manhattan, my father was surprisingly supportive. I give a little credit for that to Mr. Donahue!
What a great story Edward 🙂. Do I understand You correctly, that the time you and your dad were pulled to be in the audience of the show was the episode with Tula ?
I remember this episode when it aired. I was desperate to find another trans person. I transitioned at 24 in 1992. The introduction to her book ( My Story) still makes me cry like a baby because it hits so close to home.
Likewise for me too, I remember reading the book and highlighting certain paragraphs that resonated with me, it really helped although I knew from the age of about 7 that I should have been a girl
Good for you. I wonder what you think of all these trans woman now. Some don't fully transition and stay dating and married to women. Do you think these trans women are really trans or just want attention?
I read Renne Richards book and Jan Morris book as well. It was those two books that taught me that trans people existed and I was not just a freak for wanting to be a girl.

She is absolutely stunning here. The fact that she stayed graceful and respectful through all those rude questions and statements from the audience was amazing, something I know I would NOT have been able to do. That entire audience knew damn well that she blew them ALL out of the water and we’re just jealous 💁🏻♀️
I remember watching this interview as a teenager. Back then, talk shows were real instead of just being freak shows. Watching these shows helped me understand transgendered and gay people at a young age. I'm glad I saw these things.
I think the first Donahue show I saw about transsexuals was with Sheila and Gene Reynolds. Remember that one? They married as a husband and wife not knowing either were transgender and they each changed their gender. I know that Sheila died a few years ago, but I think Gene is still alive but was identified as Jean in Sheila's obituary not 'Gene.'
I first saw her, on the Power Station's music video, Some Like It Hot. It wasn't until I saw her, on Donahue, that I knew that she was transgender. I would never have guessed because she's beautiful!
She/you remind me SO much of Princess Diana...facial mannerisms, eyes, body language. I remember this from when I was a young gay kid growing up in Wisconsin. SO glad to find it again!!
Wow. I don’t really know how I ended up finding this video, but I’m sure glad I did. Looking at the closing credits, this was 1990. I was 10 years old and was unaware of transsexuality. I was also unaware of homosexuality or anything other than what my parents were. But I knew I too was different. Growing up, my journey has been completely different to Tula’s, but to see a beautiful, strong, intelligent and warm human being on that stage, taking comments that were both supportive and not with such grace......it doesn’t matter what gender you are....class is clearly something you’re born with. Also, we as human beings constantly have the need to identify as something, be it sexuality, a culture, a religion or a gender....there’s a need to define who we and others are constantly, when in actuality our actions should be the only thing that define us. Before anything we’re human. Thank you Caroline for posting this. You’re remarkable.
Jahna Steele (was a Las Vegas showgirl) was pretty also and even had a naturally feminine voice. She died some years ago, though. I think it was suicide.
I also have XXXY chromosomes, having come out in late June 2022. I also have NCAH with female internal organs, including a uterus and tubes and ovaries. At 28.30 she mentioned the black outs which I also have but she did not mention about being epileptic or autistic which I am as well. I was born, for all intended purposes, a girl but developed into a boy over a period of between 3-7 years. She was the first xxxy I had ever heard of outside of my own condition.
Tula is the real deal. These days many heterosexual male transgenders claim to be intersex but aren’t. Lots of fetishists posing as trans now sadly. Much respect for her! ❤
Wow, she's so beautiful and charming with cute mannerisms. And her HAIR! I love that volume. I love how even though she suffered from gender dysphoria she didn't want the world to change for her she made the money to change herself and live how she wanted. And by putting he past behind her she has a very successful modeling career. I hate that she was forced to talk about her past when she didn't seem to dwell on it at all and completely passed as a woman.

She's so sweet ,,everyone deserves to be loved!!! Love her facial expressions , body language , and voice , if she wasn't ment to be a woman idk who is! So stunning
Phil Donahue was an enlightened, gracious, kind, and supportive human being. R.I.P. Phil. I hope some of those rude, ignorant people in the audience changed their tune after all these years. All human beings want is acceptance. No one is asking for anyone to be gay, trans, or anything different than who they are. Live and let live!
She shook the world on that era of many people who are in their state of ignorance, well we cant blame them! But this Woman is just purely genuine than many other women in the US even in today’s day❤

@@tiagopaes9524 Yes there is. Many people are born intersex. I would encourage you to check out the biology. Whoever told you there are only two sexes at birth needs a biology class.
Tula is male. XXXY syndrome does not mean you are both sexes or that your development 'can go either way' as Tula states in the video. XXXY genes produce a male with sex organs that do not form correctly. They may have small testes or testes that aren't visible or a micropenis, they can't produce sperm, and they may have erectile dysfunction. They're still men. They may also have gynecomastia, which means they may grow some breast tissue. Again, still men.

ugh. just came here after watching Joan Rivers’ interview. Such a stark difference - Joan treated Caroline like a human being, and showed sincere interest and compassion. Donahue and his simple audience treated her like a zoo animal. Unsurprising, but disappointing. Love you, Tula ♥️
I mean, Joan treated her the same in my eyes, her questions were very invasive, the only difference is she didn't hate Tula and was just curious whereas this guy is clearly disgusted by her. Today, asking questions about medical procedures anybody has had and about their sex life would be considered extremely rude and unnecessary, either way she handled it like a pro.

Well spoken Caroline .. your a fantastic role model for all Trans folk... and if people dont like your flirtiness too bad we are each different and you own your sexuality and carry it very well. A point to be made and not aired in this interview is that sexuality has nothing to do with being Transgendered. You can be either gender and be Asexual, Bi-sexual or Heterosexual. ie gender does not determine sexual orientation. its definitely where a lot of people get all confused.
Not true. Tula is a true transexual. Just because heterosexual transvestites decided to lump themselves in and erase the homosexual transsexuals doesn’t mean they are all the same. Read the brain studies. I have. They validate early onset homosexual transsexuals ONLY.

Why, do u think this is natural? The fact that you are changing yr biology is ludicrous in my mind, the world needs to be more tolerant yes, but this is un natural to me and I'm sure to others as well
@@Lordmij Well, does it bother you as much when people have plastic surgery? When someone missing legs get prosthetic ones? What about women who take the pill? Or even when people dye their hair, have tattoos or wear makeup? Because none of these things are natural either. What is 100% natural though is the deep inner feeling of what we are, our identity. Scientific research has proved no amount of therapy could change gender identity, but you can change your body to match it. Why live a miserable life in a body you hate when doctors can help you, just because hormones and surgery aren’t “natural”?

I think CC is a brave person to undergo such a transformation, but I think that was a totally unfair thing to say to that young man in the audience. It came off as a little petty. The audience member started out nicely enough and then just said he wouldn't be interested in seeing the magazine. Most straight men wouldn't, I dare say. He has a right to say that. She has a right to tell him that it's his right not to look at it. And leave it there. He didn't question her attractiveness. He just said he wouldn't be interested in looking at it, knowing she started out as a man. I saw another interview with she and the young stud she ended up marrying, and he was addressing his own sexuality, claiming he is straight. I'm not sure she likes it when people question her husband about his sexuality or make assumptions about it. All the straight men I know would not date much less marry a woman who used to be a man. So it's a fair question and he addressed it. I don't think it was nice of her to make that comment about the young man in the audience like that though.
i remember watching this show live. What a treat to to have you pop up in my in my recommended feed! Beautiful, poised and wry sense of humor. It is fun watching Phil squirm...
It's funny how she was attacked for embracing being an object. I suppose there's no equivalent but no man would protest being a sexual object or sex symbol. I suppose the rub is that men are never exclusively seen as sexual objects and that was the young audience member's point. I must say she had a really beautiful smile!!!! She was also extremely poised and gracious considering some of the audience member's remarks.
She’s a model. Why is she not allowed to be beautiful and embrace her unique innate sexuality? The person who made that comment probably does the same thing as Tula does but somehow because she’s born male it’s wrong? Every woman in the world wants to be feminine, sexy, and desired but Tula can’t? She EARNED the right to be desired. She fought for those like herself and even today you can still be killed for being TS! So yes it was important for her to change the narrative about transsexuals and tell men it’s OKAY to be attracted to them!
@@tula1433 Women don't aspire to, nor do we predicate our femininity on it ie - oh, straight men are attracted to me therefore I am a woman. Women are desired anyway, we're objectified regardless of whether they want to be. MtF transsexuals take up adult work at a much higher rate than biological women. For most women our body is something private and the idea of being reduced to a commodity, known only for our t_ts is degrading. Otherwise every attractive woman would just get her kit off. People are free to make whatever choices they like but they have to live with the consequences. Supermodels have catalogues that are far more extensive and varied than Playboy and a bit part in a Bond movie. Cossey is exceptionally beautiful but middling when compared to the supermodel cohort (the 90s Supers, VS models) Relatively mediocre MTFs receiving more accolades than bio females for doing much less is nothing new. The 'demure' saga is a case in point. If not for the transsexual aspect, Cossey would be forgotten just as 1000s of women who do similar work have been. The proliferation of 🌽 and adult content is demonstrably correlated to the unwanted sexualisation of women. Nude modelling is not ‘empowering’. Empowerment is about having social, economic and political capital. A say in decisions that matter. The men javking off to the 🌽 continue to have a stranglehold on power. We don't 'identify' into it. It's just foisted upon us. Social exclusion, rampant abuse. There are elite athletes, who, in addition to being in the top .0001pct of population thanks to their discipline, grit and sportsmanship, also happen to look like supermodels. There are women bankers, lawyers, architects, doctors, vets who don't become obsolete once menopause hits. She reminds me of Lady Diana, in the way she composes herself. She is so beautiful. I think a lot of people had a problem with her being beautiful, had she been more masculine they would have been OK.
@@kathleenbelickis1456except she doesn’t really have Diana’s class. She says a lot of really vulgar and tacky things, which I think degrade her. I do find she has a rather masculine structure to her face, though. There is something in the eyes, or behind the eyes, where you can see it’s a man. I can always tell, no matter how “great” the surgery is. She looks great however, but it is what it is.

48 XXXY is an intersex condition that only occurs in males. Like all other Inter Sex conditions, This one is Sex specific. He doesn’t mention all of the other behavioral issues and cognitive impairments that come with this disorder. And it’s untrue that all 48 XXXY males are transsexuals. That’s a flat out lie. And there definitely are not 25,000 in the UK. Maybe that was true for transsexuals in general in the late 80s, but 48 XXXY is an extremely rare chromosomal configuration.
There was a certain grace with Tula that many of the transexuals today certainly dont have, the deportment, hair and less makeup emphasize a more natural feminine outline, The fact that she was chosen to be one of the bond girls in "For your eyes only" does say a lot as they wanted very naturally feminine girls which Tula very much presented as to the film company. The situation with many transexuals today (not all) seem to decide to become trans and lets face it will never hit the mark as Tula did all them years ago. I feel that to some extent today it is like the new craze with many men to become transexuals sometimes out of the blue and some as we all know will never really reach the standard we see here.
I like watching cis people ask questions (hopefully) with sincere desire to learn, even if some questions are awkward. We need this today bc it seems like our media either panders to us (trans people) or it shuts us down nowadays. I want real bridges built between all sexuality and gender differences with honesty and active compassion ! Anyway I think another show like this will help. Edit: and we can leave behind the assholes 😂
Tula is incredible, bulletproof to some honest but often brutally cruel questions. The host seems surprisingly respectful for the time as well. Ultimately Tula is a trailblazer, as a cis white dude I have so much respect for her.
It’s a very English style. Many English women have that rather coy style. But she certainly speaks with a potty mouth and says really vulgar things. I wish she had’ve acted more lady-like. It’s degrading for her.
The girl in the green dress with dots is the first one to actually have an honest comment on this show. If I passed you on the street I would be very envious [of your looks]. Finally cutting to the chase. That's what a high fashion model does. They could have just ended this show with her comment alone.
Of course trans women are women no matter of chromosomes but even her biological sex according to her chromosomes she was never a boy, but sort off half of her sex was biologically a cis girl xx and one half xy cis boy (in theory). Most transwomen are born with a male sex, she wasn't.
@@teijaflink2226 XXXY syndrome doesn't make a person male and female at the same time. XXXY syndrome causes a male to have underdeveloped or faulty sex organs. I'm Tired Of It Too
But if you keep it a secret you’re putting yourself at grave danger if the guy finds out.

Donahue!

XXXY genes produce a male with sex organs that do not form correctly. I wonder if he is? Usually they KNOW .
Closeted and probably jealous too.
I think he was planted by the producers and told to say that. Manufactured drama.

That doctor ♡ - Loving that he stood up and shared his knowledge so clearly to help people's understanding and acceptance.
They'll discard the old sex object and swiftly move on to a new one.
Thankfully, there are far more women with talent as well as looks pursuing careers based on intellectual competence than ones who have determined that their bits are the most valuable thing about them. Where the challenge goes beyond being eye candy. Look up Nancy Hopkins, a researcher who got sexually harassed by Watson (half of the famous duo Watson & Crick), or Rosalind Franklin who was instrumental to the discovery of the double helical model but whose role was undermined by the two males. www.science.org/content/article/rosalind-franklin-and-damage-gender-harassment
That is what women face every day as a result of our physical limitations and sex. Women contributing something meaningful to society instead of solely serving as sexual fodder for 😈 men.

Especially in the U.K. You came across so genuine, graceful, confident and very smart and classy how you handled the audience members that were obviously transphobic. I read your first edition book in the early 90's and I was very moved by your story. Since then I have always admired you for the beautiful soul you are and helping educate people all over the world by sharing your story. Being your authentic self and a pioneer that lead the way for many others. Beautiful on the outside and inside. I even read your book again a few years back. Happy SUNday darling. May it be filled with an abundance of happiness and everything and more. Glory be to you. : X:-)X
She's beautiful on the inside and outside. She has an awesome attitude.
Okay, it is Caroline’s charm that really is the icing on the cake, but honestly, she is an enviable beauty 💕
And can we talk about how Phil can in his adorable way, navigate through the most controversial issues👏💖
She was the girl in the "Some like it hot"music video by "The power station "....
I think she was in the Bang A Gong video too.
@@TT-rz5td She was also a Bond girl. For Your eyes only. She is wearing a white bikini in the pool scene.

@@epistteare you sure?
I always loved his show.
Great sense of humour under the circumstances and a big heart.
You go Caroline. Live the life. Muah!
She reminds me of Lady Diana, in the way she composes herself. She is so beautiful. I think a lot of people had a problem with her being beautiful, had she been more masculine they would have been OK.
I thought same! She looks like her especially when she smiles.
Thank you Caroline for being so brave-beyond gorgeous!
We've come so far.
Have we? I'm not convinced.
Katarina S. We have come on a long way, at least in the UK we can now change our birth certificates and passports.
Tula you are one classy woman! I’ve loved watching your videos and reading up on your story. A really amazing inspiration to all, trans or not. Much love to you x
She's beautiful af
48 XXXY is an intersex condition that only occurs in males. Like all other Inter Sex conditions, This one is Sex specific. He doesn’t mention all of the other behavioral issues and cognitive impairments that come with this disorder. And it’s untrue that all 48 XXXY males are transsexuals. That’s a flat out lie. And there definitely are not 25,000 in the UK. Maybe that was true for transsexuals in general in the late 80s, but 48 XXXY is an extremely rare chromosomal configuration.
Tula I wouldn't have been able to be as composed as you with these lynching mobs. You are such an inspiration to so many of us ❤ U
Love how she was right at ease when Phil started talking. She knew this would be a classy interview.
Those happy sailors down in front take the cake. Loved Donahue's shows. RIP great man.
Your the queen I wasn’t even born and look at you telling your truth wen I had no idea it was mine to
So Brave! Very glad you were on Phil for your first American show.
There is something about her that is very reminiscent of Princess Diana. Her pout and the way she holds her head.
It’s a very English style. Many English women have that rather coy style. But she certainly speaks with a potty mouth and says really vulgar things. I wish she had’ve acted more lady-like. It’s degrading for her.
Cultivated Coy behavior....He's acting. He's studied Diana, and rehearsed endlessly/obviously.
Pathetic.
I got to meet her in NYC were I worked and helped her find her address book that she left in a taxi.
A very kind person.
I like how the guy at 20:30 was so freaking rude but she gets scolded for retaliating?

She was right about him tho. He was angry she was living his fantasy! Lol!
It’s 2024. Years later things have changed so much ; but NOT ENOUGH.
The girl in the green dress with dots is the first one to actually have an honest comment on this show. If I passed you on the street I would be very envious [of your looks]. Finally cutting to the chase. That's what a high fashion model does. They could have just ended this show with her comment alone.
So she was actually intersex according to her chromosomes... she is not your typical case of transgender
That doesn't matter chromosomes don't detrime gender. Trans women are women regardless of what chromosomes they have
Of course trans women are women no matter of chromosomes but even her biological sex according to her chromosomes she was never a boy, but sort off half of her sex was biologically a cis girl xx and one half xy cis boy (in theory). Most transwomen are born with a male sex, she wasn't.
@@1991-present they said gender not sex, maybe you should READ the comment
@@teijaflink2226 XXXY syndrome doesn't make a person male and female at the same time. XXXY syndrome causes a male to have underdeveloped or faulty sex organs. Testes, but they're too small or don't make sperm. A penis, but it's too small or can't have an erection. Plus a host of other problems: dental, bone, intellectual, etc.
Many trans women are intersex, more prevalent than in non trans population. Also how does it matter.
Tula we thank you for what you have done for the trans community. I know it's an easy thing to do, i wonder if she is still around
Hollywood needs to produce a movie about her life.
Must of been really hard to sit in front of that audience and endure the cruel comments and ugly looks.
I'm Tired Of It Too there was nothing human about this hateful generation
She should have joined the Miss Universe pageant.
nymet2454 she appeared in James Bond
She feels like a woman, she's got a stunning body, and those who don't perceive her as a woman - it's their problem.
Absolutely well said Alisha ..
Hes not a woman, he’ll never be a woman
@@Winskl9010 Ms Cossey is upset that you think so 😂
Well she's intersex, so she's male and female. That's why she looks like a woman. Most trans woman are 'XY' Males, with all male sex traits.
Actually, things aren’t that simple. There’re people born as women with XY (Morris syndrome), and men with XX (de la Chapelle syndrome). In their pursuit to simplify things, people get themselves into tough frames that sometimes remind a bunker, sometimes so narrow that there’s not enough of space in it. Our world is diverse and complicated in its seeming simplicity.
Stunning class & confidence
