An impressively well-produced, edited & engaging show. Congratulations. I'm a poorly travelled birder compared to most of my peers visiting few places outside Europe; USA/Canada, Australia - Queensland, stopovers in HK & Singapore and, just before the Covid lockdown, Japan). The latter had four of my Holy Grail birds - Red-crowned Crane, any albatross (we had 3 species), Blakiston's Owl & Steller's Eagle (amazing bird!). So your task, should you chose to accept it, is to get Mark Brazil on talking about Hokkaido - it has the best winter birding on this planet!
Thank you for watching and for your feedback John. As Chris says “I’d bite your arm off” to get to Japan. And a super-thank you for sending your challenge. Our producer, Camilla, and the guys will check Mark out for sure. The dream is to be able to move the studio to various parts of the world to cover local people and patches like Top Gear-but for birders. Japan would be a pretty epic place to do that. Cheers!
@@TheBirdersShow - That's great. I'd also suggest as a good interviewee my old birding pal Phil Gregory (Sicklebill Safaris & previously of Cassowary House, author of PNG FG & Birds of Paradise & Bowerbirds book). I'd also suggest several guys who could ramble on about Tarifa/Cadiz Province - Simon Tonkin (Inglorious Bustards), Peter Jones, etc. PS - just took the plunge & changed from 8x to 10x; the Swaro NLs are ludicrously expensive BUT have same FoV as my old 8x Zeiss.
Thanks for commenting John, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Plenty more coming up! Your Japan trip sounds like an absolute dream: albatross (any albatross!) is also a dream bird of mine, along with the eagle. How incredible that you can see all of those species in one place. I'm ever so slightly jealous. And we will absolutely try to get Mark Brazil on the show.
ey @@johncantelo, indeed... I have been birding and co-leading 3 times with Mark Brazil here in Colombia and he does it of course in our list of invited guests for future episodes... we also have some of those other more inglorious names like Simon ;-) and Peter only of he attend s wearing a white shirt!!! jajajajaj, you know what I mean ;-) my NL pures are here in town but I still need to wait until early next week to get my hand on those... can't wait tho I am a bit nervous to compare weight/size with my tiny and lovely ELs8x32 that I do love! --- GLAD you enjoyed the show mate!
I am a guy who fled Sweden to live in Peru for the last 22 years because I hate cold weather. Yet, I have been to Japan four years in a row I spite of the snow and the cold, and I just love those Steller's Eagles you saw in my video from this year, and like you John, I just got out before COVID hit. I am sad not to be able to repeat our yearly tour in 2021 because Japan will remain closed to foreign visitors throughout the season. Come 2022, and I shall run our 5-day tour again. Meanwhile, studying Japanese with Duolingo and Pimsleur. Great Show guys. I finally catching up after being in the field guiding here in Peru most of November.
I normally don't watch interviews like these till the end. But this was something different!!! Really amazing stories and insights shared. My eagerness for a neotropics trip is growing and if i ever do go there I would want to spend time with one of these guys!
Just as an aside, for those who want an "easy" ground cuckoo, look no further than the Greater roadrunner of the southwest of the US and northern half of Mexico. While not exactly conspicuous, its not stalking the undergrowth giving glimpses, either. Great vid guys, as usual, thanks.
Thanks for the tip. Greater Roadrunner is a bird I really want to see, hopefully we can come and film in the southwest US one day and get our ground cuckoo 😁
Definitely enjoyed this video. I have been lucky enough to have birded in Panama, Colombia (4 times), Ecuador (2 times), Guyana, Peru, Brazil (2 times), Antarctica. I am so excited to have birding content at this time when many of us from the US are in lockdown with travel.
You’ve certainly been around the block a few times! Thanks for giving this episode a watch. Our goal is to keep producing global stories with great guests like Rich and George. Let’s keep the dream of international travel and birdwatching alive!
Glad you enjoyed it Joshua and thanks for commenting. That's quite a destination list - Guyana is very high on my 'want' list for future birding destinations. Whereabouts did you visit during your four Colombia trips, and any big targets you're still missing over here?
I think that's true up to a point, and that's the importance of local guides working alongside the company guide: they provide the local knowledge to complement the guiding skills and knowledge of the main guide. A good team of guide and local guide makes for a successful trip for sure :) thanks for watching and commenting
Absolutely wonderful watching and listening you guys. :) Always welcome to do some birding in Bulgaria! Will be happy to show you around :) Take care and keep the spirit!
Thank you for your feedback. We will keep Bulgaria in mind-Nikolay, who’s part of our production team, is from Sofia-some of us went to his wedding over there last summer!
So glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching. Bulgaria would be another absolute dream, all those thousands of wintering Red-breasted Geese, I bet that's quite a sight. A Dalmatian Pelican would be pretty sweet too! Hopefully we can all bird there one day and even film an episode direct from Bulgaria!
@@ChrisBell01 Excellent! Looking forward to hearing from you! I will be responsible for the monitoring of Red-breasted Geese at the southern black sea coast this winter on behalf of the Bulgarian Society for the protection of Birds/ BirdLife Bulgaria and will have quite up to date info
Dream job indeed! It was such great fun catching up with Rich and George, hopefully we'll see them both here in Colombia sooner rather than later. George and I have got a ground-cuckoo to find after all.
Without a doubt, a great contribution for all those passionate about birds, excellent video. And especially when experts speak of my Bolivia as a wonderful destination for bird watching, due to the large number of unique habitats that the country presents. I am particularly a staunch supporter of the new species of Tanager being named Apolo Tanager, in recognition of what this town in Bolivia has, also the residence of Palkachupa Cotinga. Congratulations for this great space, to Chris and particularly to Diego, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in the U.S. just when, together with Sebastian Herzog, the Bolivian Bird Guide began to be written. Greetings...
I really admire the work of these guys. It's not easy to travel around the world recognizing sounds and identifying many species of birds for a group of clients. They must be great professionals. Also, Diego is a great birder. I'd like to learn birds as well as birders do, but that's so hard. I just know some of them. Greetings from Panama 🇵🇦
Another great episode with fab anecdotes! I loved hearing that both Rich and George like to have slow days where they spend time really exploring the bird life around them. Wonderful!
Thanks for watching, love your podcast too :) It's great to hear those little behind-the-scenes tidbits, right?! Even though I am a bit of a 'fast' birder, it's also so nice to just sit in one spot and immerse yourself in the wildlife around you.
@@ChrisBell01 Slow birding is really my vibe, but I also find it really interesting to hear all experiences. I love how you have made shareable segments for your show. Wonderful! And thank you so much for listening to my show. 😊
@@CasualBirderPod I really tend to oscillate between the two, it depends on my mood that day I guess. How lucky we are to have a hobby that allows us to do both, right?! :)

I was hoping for more women birders as well. There are so many experts that I have become aware of through the Women Birders Happy Hour Podcast, and the recent Swarovski Live Feeds. Love to hear from them too.
@@CasualBirderPod Our next guest is an amazing female conservationist and bird advocate, I'm sure you will love her stories and the work she's doing with migratory bird species :) I won't give any more away haha! Hey Andrew! I would say that the best start would be to look into the possibility of leading some bird walks in your local area, or even set up your own. Or contact your local bird organization and investigate the possibilities of you doing some guiding. Most guides start locally then gradually start leading regional tours, then maybe internationally.
