Wow! How things can change over time. I ate in that downstairs section in May 2017 and found the fish and chips to be excellent. Whether the management has changed or not I wouldn't know but Gary always gives a very honest, and considered review and I trust him when he says that meal was bad. Very disappointing as my partner and I really enjoyed our meal there. Thanks for the review Gary, very interesting.
@@utherdoul2682 I wasn't brave enough to even watch that bit!!! I was reaching for the sick bag!!! Think I will stick to peanut butter sandwiches!! Have a great evening 😀
I thought it all, except the chips, looked as if they had been cooked in dirty oil, and overcooked. I worked in a chippy many years ago, and that fishcake and fish both looked as I describe.
So glad Gary reviewed this particular chip shop , I'm visiting Norwich as my elderly mum lives near by,,mums favourite meal is , you guessed good old fish and chips which mum still see as a treat, I intended to take mum there on a day out, Mum being 83 and having difficulty with stairs and disliking loud music would have been a dissapointing day especially with tasteless chips and disappointing fish , Thank you Gary 👍
A fish and chip shop in an Anderson bomb shelter. Now that's different. And I'm old enough to have sat in one during air raids. Most ended up as garden sheds except this one. What a pity the food didn't live up to the presentation. Thanks for sharing, as always, Gary.
I spent the duration from February 1940 in and out of our Anderson, nearly dying from pneumonia due to the cold, damp conditions during my first year, during the Blitz, blown off my bunk on to the concrete floor on my bonce by the blast from a parachute mine, a year or so on, then a Doodlebug blowing up a potato clamp, a few hundred yards up the road. Mother decided to up sticks and took my brother and me up to where she was born in rural North Norfolk, until Dad was healed from his wounds from Normandy, and was released from hospital and the army. We returned to "Doodlebug Alley" and their fight path over our house has ceased. Mother used our Anderson for a chicken house. They became my pets until Grandad dispatched two for Christmas Dinner. I flatly refused to eat any!
Wow, this used to be my go-to chip shop when I was at Uni in Norwich in the late 90s! Amazing it's still there. Back then it was a proper chippy. Shame they've gone down the "Instagrammable" route rather than concentrate on the food.
For context, as a local. This was a decent standard chippy for years. Used to always make Lovely golden yellow chips. Then around 2013ish it got taken over by an American (or possibly Canadian) and he made it quite unique (opened up the basement etc) and introduced quite a quirky diverse menu (including prawns and squid rings). It became insanely popular because it was pretty decent fish and very well priced. Since about 2022/23 it’s become so insanely popular and the quality has taken a nose dive. That’s why it was rated as number 1, because for years it’s decent food and very well priced.
Your videos and summaries obviously get the balance of your feelings just right when it comes to scoring, because every time I've watched and listened I've nailed the score myself. Today was no exception. You pondered on the score, and I thought, "well that's only a 3 to 4 mark". You said 3.5. Every time. It's uncanny. 😊
What a shame the food wasn't up to much. The curry sauce was pure gloop, radioactive mushy peas and an MDF fish cake. It's a pity because that sauna you were sitting in looked so promising😆 Thanks for another enlightening video 👍
MDF remark and sauna reference! Very good indeed. And spot on. Those tins looked like something had been operated on. It’s always a red flag when a foodie place resorts to such gimmicks.
See Gary, this is exactly why your reviews should be taken note of. They are objective, non biased and truthfully reflect your experience of the venue. There is never a hidden agenda with any of your reviews. Keep it up my friend. Outstanding work as usual.
On a recent holiday from Ireland I stayed in Norwich for a couple of night's, there was a fish and chip shop nearby called "New Sole Plaice". It was amazing, I tried a couple of different chipper's on my trip, but this was the stand out meal of my holiday. Next time in Norwich give them a go, plus the couple that run the place are lovely.
Hi Gary, I used that place in the 1970s when I was at university. Layout has changed of course. I totally agree with your review. No excuse for what they served. I would rather get a portion of chips and mushy peas off Norwich market.
Gary, you really need to start complaining and sending food back or at least asking for some of the bill to be refunded. Unfortunately I’m finding it harder and harder to find good food at a good price these days. Everyone seems to have lowered their standards and charging through the roof for mediocre food
@@GaryEatsI don't think it really matters what the Establishment is. If the food is poor complain. But if they have seen the video I don't think there can be left in no doubt what you thought about the majority of the food quality. Another great vid Gary.
I felt your pain Gary-very disappointing. Looked good but no taste, no good. Get back up to Yorkshire for proper fish & chips boys! Hope your tummy was ok on your drive home🤨😘
Gary this will probably be one of my last comments on TH-cam, because I told a disrespectful man what I thought. I wanted to say to everyone I don’t work and I will never work. I also wanted to say to you Gary carry on doing your food reviews because you are always respectful and honest.
That fishcake looked like something you'd find at a bottom of a volcano. I would sent that back just by the look of it. You weren't harsh at all, very honest review.
Yes Gary for experts like ourselves once they start cooking in the wrong fat the flavor disappears, it is critical to keep most mono unsaturated vegetable oils away from fish and chips. Cooking media in terms of quality and outcome in descending order I would recommend the following, duck fat, beef Tallow, lard, peanut oil, olive oil, solid cooking oils made from animal fats.
Duck fat or extra virgin olive oil in my kitchen. I do love some beef dripping on thick toast over a coal fire. A little seasoning and away y'go. Gran has gone, with her fire place, but the memory lingers on. I still collect the drippings from my roasts to spread on toast, but the coal flavour is no more. Still tasty though!
@seamusobrien2675 I use olive oil for shallow frying, but can you use it for deep frying? I was under the impression that you can't use olive oil for frying your chips in, as it starts smoking and threatening to catch fire?
That all looked good to start with. Just goes to show. You shouldn't judge a book etc. I admire how you always look for the positive even with an experience like this.
About 120 miles from London's once busiest docks in the realm. You might have got a Yarmouth kipper, or a Cromer crab, or a herring from further north: Grimsby. In Norwich, the cod may have been sourced from Iceland. The store, not the country, and not thawed out properly.
Frying chips is an art. You need the right potato (Bintje or a few other species), the right frying fat (preferably beef tallow) and the Belgian "double fry" method for really good, crispy chips.
People pay for a decent meal. Why can't places like this produce the goods. I find it's happening more so these days honestly, especially takeaways. Great stuff Gary my friend.
‘Yorkshire folk love gravy’ and it definitely does go with fish & chips. Gary, have you been to Hull & tried a pattie? As far as I know Hull is the only place that actually do them (not to be confused with a fish pattie). They are potato with herbs & sage in batter. I’d recommend trying them at Bob Carvers, one of Hull’s oldest chippies, in the city centre. You could also try the Original American Chip Spice (made in Hull 😂)
@garyEats i have started watching you channel over the past few days and I am absolutely obsessed. I'm from South Africa. And a chef as well. And will happily have you over for a review. You have such a warm and gentle soul and so respectful when reviewing and super entertaining keep it up onward and upward
Yes this venue is very quirky indeed. How unusual in a good way. The fish looks lovely and the batter very crispy. Tiger prawns are delicious by the sounds of it. Shame it didn't taste as good as it looked. Thank you for sharing our Gary again at your expense. Great video sweet x 😊
It was a real different experience but I was let down by the quality Maria. The fish was incredibly mushy!! The sauces were so bland and disappointing, especially the gravy. Onto the next, lets see what is around the corner!
@@GaryEats Shame that our Gary. I always enjoy your reviews though, whether a good score or not. The venues are always different and I know you put a lot of hard work into every video. Thank you again both you and your Son sweet x 😊
I thought it was going to be excellent when it first came out but the chips were dry and bland, the fish was wet and mushy and the sauces... no comment.
If I owned a restaurant....I would be absolutely crapping my pants if I saw you walk in gary. Your balanced, honest reviews carry the truth. Hopefully, the restaraunts that receive negative reviews take it on the chin, and they use criticism as a tool to use for future improvement
You'd only be crapping your pants if you knew you were serving up shite. If you took pride in what was being sent out to every customer, you'd be rubbing your hands when Gary walked in, because like you said - always honest.
@RobertMcguirk-nk1ni I think you'd still be a tad nervy regardless. You'd want and need your chefs to be putting in a solid, reliable performance. Absolutely no mistakes etc
I went to university here and used to love their food but sad to see it’s changed! It used to be a WWII themed restaurant with an Anderson shelter in the basement. Great review, Gary!

Hey gary , another top video 👌, sloppy mush , the fish definitely been frozen that's a guarantee. Also love your comment on yorkshire. We certainly do know how to do fish and chips, although I seldom eat them , it's nice to have now and again , and remember the batter matters 🙂

I work in Whitby, people come everyday just for the fish and chips.. Glad you loved the Whitby food Gary. Shame about Norwich though.. We should hold classes up here in Yorkshire
Just how can anyone go wrong with mushy peas? I found a box of Bigga in the back of my cupboard over 10 years past the best before date, but they are dried and no sign of spoilage so why not. I followed the instructions and used the tablets and 24 hour soak and rinse and they were great. There is no excuse for a chippy with modern supplies.
You're not too far from Cromer Gary, would very highly recommend "No.1 fish and chip shop" in Cromer we went there a few years ago and to this day the best chippy we've ever had!

I bet the oil needed to be changed as the food looked a dingy colour and the fish was completely soggy inside, meaning the fish wasn't defrosted completely and probably holding water! Not very healthy 🧐
Gary, greetings from Houston, Texas, USA. I am so entertained by your little skip run at the start of these videos. I also love how you said, "no, that's not good" and then took another bite. Hahahaha. You make the supreme sacrifice for your viewers. Keep up the good work. Very joyful.
There are lots of tributaries to the mighty Mississippi, and bayous. Gary should go to NewOrleans and Cujun country, and review the fantastic food available there. I've been 3 times! Even the catfish stew is great in The Swamp, but he should try Creole cuisine!
Hi Gary. I have been a lurker for a while and seen all your videos. I live in Norwich too. When I saw this video pop up in my notifications, I was hoping it wasn't the Grosvenor Fish & Chip Shop because many highly rate their chips and I have been twice, and they have been poor. The best chips are on the Market called Rons. They have been frying chops for 50 plus years. Also, Lucys is nice too and they fry in beer batter. I do like the honest review and not someone who say they are fantastic when they aren't. I hope you had a nice time in Norwich and hope to see you return soon.
A daughter of Norwich here. Thank you for visiting my home city. Large areas of Norwich are riddled with medieval undercrofts and systems of connecting tunnels. This restaurant is in Pottergate which a very ancient part of the city. What you see now was built on top of 12th century gravel mines. There was a massive fire in 1509, but most of Pottergate was rebuilt by 1650 including access to the original tunnels and undercrofts. Between 1760 and 1820, the Pottergate site was completely built on. What you see in the basement of the Grosvenor is an interconnecting undercroft from the 12th century. Where there is one building now, there would have been several back then. Also there was chalk mining in Pottergate as late as the 18th century. Eating in the downstairs restaurant, you were sitting in a place which is around a 1,000 years old.
Thanks for that informative backgrounder to some of Norwich. I'm getting on in years now and doubt that I'll ever make it back to England. But I can just imagine sitting in that 1000 year old dugout fish n' chip shop. Cheers from BC, Canada :)
I'm originally from Norwich. Shame it wasn't too clever. That's why I love what you do, honesty! Someone like Rate My Take Away would have given that food a 9 or a 10.
@GaryEats Yes, me too. He comes across as an all-around decent human being. I find he is more entertainment value, though, as opposed to a serious food critic like yourself.
@TelThePower Planning to do just that later. 🙂 I usually catch up with Gary and others on a Sunday to wind down. So I'll be watching and commenting there later. Weekend has been brill. I hope you have had a lovely one yourself lovely. 🙂
@TelThePower We used to always go down to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth on seaside trips back in the day as a family. Good memories. They used to have a Haven park down that way that we went to a couple of times back when I was a lil gal. Not sure if it is still there. Would have been early 90s. I left Norwich and did a stint in London between 2005 - 2012. That ended because of the riots. I wanted out after what happened. Sold up and got out to sunnier climes as you say. I'm going to give the new video a watch now. 🙂
Gary, when you have a disastrous experience, do you then go and find something tasty to fill your tummy? I hate when you don’t enjoy yourself because I know how much you love the food you review. Better luck next time! I’ll be here cheering you on! 😊
One thing i have noticed in the last 3 decades is every time any cafe or restaurant or whatever gets sold on to new owners ,the first things they do is cut costs to increase profit ,the new generation of food merchants are in it for big profits ,pride and concern over quality is forgotten on their quest to get as rich as you can out of what they make and sell, blind freddy can see that ....greed rules the roost ,customers be damned ,they have never ending supply of mugs to fleece
That was more than fair Gary- I'd have given it a 2/10: it looked awful. I'm all for not wasting food, but I agree with the other 'commentors' - send it back! I would say that it was the restaurant wasting the food, not you!
Hi Gary, vegan Liz here. Just want you to know I love your channel! Even though I’m vegan I really enjoy your reviews ha ha. This is down to you, you come across as a lovely chap. It is hard to say only on your vid but that looks more like Pollock than Cod. Pollock is white, flacky and a good Cod substitute. But if fried too long will turn to mush.
Gary normally I agree with you on markings, but that, despite the quirky decor, gets a 1/10 from me, you’re not paying for the decor, you’re paying for edible food and if you can’t stomach it then IMHO your rating was far too high! The peas and curry sauce looked full of modified maize starch to me no wonder they tasted rank!
I understand your point, Bill, but in fairness it was a big portion even though it wasn’t quality and the tiger prawns saved the day, you know I respect your opinion
Hi Gary! Very quirky interior, though the downstairs area does not look claustrophobe friendly. The food looked OK when it hit the table, but as soon as you had a few bites, it sadly looked like it was going to go downhill quickly. When you have beautifully cooked chips & an excellent gravy, it can be such a fantastic treat. The cod seemed like a real let-down & the sauces dreadful. I'm sure you don't like giving harsh reviews when the food is disappointing, but hopefully this restaurant takes note & they can make some improvements. Any good manager or owner should take on fair, valid & honest criticism. I'm sorry this one was not a great experience Gary, hopefully the next is better! Your score was fair because if you know you are going to struggle to get through it, it's not worth more than a few points. Take care & safe travels to you both. 💙

Wow talk about highs then lows… Hopefully they live and learn. Get an expert in to help them up their game. All the elements are there for it to be successful. Here’s hoping 🤞
I applaud them using such an unusual space and making it work. Having worked in food for over 30 years, a bad manager and a bad cook can really bring down a restaurant. I imagine that they used to have good cooks but they moved on and now they have someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Hence the review change.
Yep exactly what I was thinking, they had good staff and they have gone and not the owner runs it themselves to show how easy it was. Or something like that.
They used to be really good before they brought the shop next door for the inside dining, they got a good reputation then changed from beef tallow to vegetable oil to appease the veggies. Never see the people who built the good rep there anymore
Shame its gone downhill. We have been there a few times but not in recent years. Not sure what could have gone so wrong, it used to be really good. New owners maybe???. Appreciate a true review, thanks for taking the time.

The chips were really poor, very rare to see that
I thought the fishcake looked like a burger.
Wasn’t me.
I think you can find better in Norwich
I still love the fish & chips served in the Norwich branch of John Lewis department store...always good...👌
Try Lucy's on the market much much better :-)
Looks like a place made for Instagram - looks all flashy and quirky but the actual food is shite.
I really liked the inside, a bit different
Corrugated iron isn't flash. Most so called up cycling isn't.
instagram is so 2010 ,this is for tiktok
Yup. Spot on. Always has been style over substance.
Or a "Plaice" made for Instagram.... Sorry I'll get my coat.
Loud music in an Anderson shelter with disappointing food? Not for me Gary. Thanks for taking one for the team on this one! 🤢 x
No problem Wendy, take care
Thanks Wendy. The Anderson shelter remark made me snort my coffee back through my nose! It’s exactly that.
Just what I thought. My neighbours had an Anderson shelter when I was a kid.
@@ian230570 Sorry Ian hope you've recovered by now! 🤭
Anderson shelter 🤣🤣👍💯🇬🇧
A fish and chip shop in an Anderson bomb shelter. Now that's different. And I'm old enough to have sat in one during air raids. Most ended up as garden sheds except this one. What a pity the food didn't live up to the presentation. Thanks for sharing, as always, Gary.
Wow are you really? I would truly love to hear your stories.
@@pippin1ful what a wonderful story Richard. I'm a bit younger than you but my best memories as a kid are of playing on bomb sites.
Did you have the snook ?
Thank you for being so consistently honest with your reviews, Gary. You're a cut above the rest.
That’s very kind to say, thank you, James
Wow, this used to be my go-to chip shop when I was at Uni in Norwich in the late 90s! Amazing it's still there. Back then it was a proper chippy. Shame they've gone down the "Instagrammable" route rather than concentrate on the food.
I thought it would be so much better but the recent reviews seem right
For context, as a local. This was a decent standard chippy for years. Used to always make
Lovely golden yellow chips.
@@dcpayne5264 I believe it was sold in about 2022 and its sadly become worse since
Your videos and summaries obviously get the balance of your feelings just right when it comes to scoring, because every time I've watched and listened I've nailed the score myself. Today was no exception. You pondered on the score, and I thought, "well that's only a 3 to 4 mark". You said 3.5.
Every time. It's uncanny. 😊
Thank you very much that means a lot, I try to be as fair and concise as possible. I really do not enjoy being negative
What a shame the food wasn't up to much. The curry sauce was pure gloop, radioactive mushy peas and an MDF fish cake.
It's a pity because that sauna you were sitting in looked so promising😆
Thanks for another enlightening video 👍
MDF remark and sauna reference! Very good indeed. And spot on. Those tins looked like something had been operated on. It’s always a red flag when a foodie place resorts to such gimmicks.
As you can see, this wasn’t a good offering Rosie and that was very funny, thank you as always and have a great end of the week
See Gary, this is exactly why your reviews should be taken note of. They are objective, non biased and truthfully reflect your experience of the venue. There is never a hidden agenda with any of your reviews.
Keep it up my friend. Outstanding work as usual.
Thank you so much Dom, good luck for the rest of the season
@ cheers my friend. No chance of the title now but maybe a cup possibly.
That sounds like a better fish and chip shop than the one I visited
Hi Gary, I used that place in the 1970s when I was at university. Layout has changed of course. I totally agree with your review. No excuse for what they served. I would rather get a portion of chips and mushy peas off Norwich market.
I always use Norwich market when i'm in the city centre as its good fish and chips and much cheaper.
Thank you very much, much appreciated Nigel... wish it was as good as before
Don't forget the mint sauce on the mushy peas...exclusive to Norwich Market...!
Gary, you really need to start complaining and sending food back or at least asking for some of the bill to be refunded. Unfortunately I’m finding it harder and harder to find good food at a good price these days. Everyone seems to have lowered their standards and charging through the roof for mediocre food
Agreed I keep getting let down anywhere I go.
I understand that Paul but in a fish and chip shop, I'm not sure...
@@GaryEatsI don't think it really matters what the Establishment is. If the food is poor complain. But if they have seen the video I don't think there can be left in no doubt what you thought about the majority of the food quality. Another great vid Gary.

It looks like a Hockey Puck!
Hi Gary, brilliant as usual, I tune in for the honesty and humility, very much a man of the people telling it the way it is.
I don’t like giving bad reviews, but I have to tell you what it was like
Yes Gary for experts like ourselves once they start cooking in the wrong fat the flavor disappears, it is critical to keep most mono unsaturated vegetable oils away from fish and chips.
Thank you very much for all the information Seamus. I agree.
Just keep telling the truth, this is why so many people are watching ...
As far as I'm aware this chip shop only cooks in animal fat- as a veggie in Norwich, I haven't been able to try their chips because of this.
@seamusobrien2675 I use olive oil for shallow frying, but can you use it for deep frying? I was under the impression that you can't use olive oil for frying your chips in, as it starts smoking and threatening to catch fire?
This is 100% the very BEST channel in this niche on all of TH-cam nothing comes even remotely close!
You are being incredibly kind

How sad is this? On the doorstep of the once busiest seaport in the country, and you get poor quality, FROZEN fish. Woeful.
This was very disappointing
About 120 miles from London's once busiest docks in the realm. You might have got a Yarmouth kipper, or a Cromer crab, or a herring from further north: Grimsby. In Norwich, the cod may have been sourced from Iceland. The store, not the country, and not thawed out properly.
@@pippin1ful Indeed. I was thinking about Lowestoft back in the day.
Look more closely.. The majority of white fish being served in the UK at the moment comes from Russia of all places!
@@moonchild666 Just what I thought.
Frying chips is an art. You need the right potato (Bintje or a few other species), the right frying fat (preferably beef tallow) and the Belgian "double fry" method for really good, crispy chips.
Thank you for the information
Love your honest reviews Gary!
Thank you very much
People pay for a decent meal. Why can't places like this produce the goods. I find it's happening more so these days honestly, especially takeaways. Great stuff Gary my friend.

Plaice? 😊
It`s been there for decades
I think you might be right Calvin although I will say its been there a long time
‘Yorkshire folk love gravy’ and it definitely does go with fish & chips.
I have not been to Hull yet Dean, but I will be visiting in the future so I will give it a try

I will be returning to do the marketplace as it looked really good, I was hoping this was a bad day at the office
This is a video about fish n chips
I like the history😊
It's about Fish and Chips.and they were Shite. It's not the History Channel.
Thanks for that informative backgrounder to some of Norwich. I'm getting on in years now and doubt that I'll ever make it back to England. But I can just imagine sitting in that 1000 year old dugout fish n' chip shop. Cheers from BC, Canada :)
Thank you very much for all the information about Norwich. It’s great to get some history.

After eating as much as I could on this occasion, I did not have anything else for the day and thank you very much
One thing i have noticed in the last 3 decades is every time any cafe or restaurant or whatever gets sold on to new owners ,the first things they do is cut costs to increase profit ,the new generation of food merchants are in it for big profits ,pride and concern over quality is forgotten on their quest to get as rich as you can out of what they make and sell, blind freddy can see that ....greed rules the roost ,customers be damned ,they have never ending supply of mugs to fleece
Unfortunately, I think you could be right
That was more than fair Gary- I'd have given it a 2/10: it looked awful. I'm all for not wasting food, but I agree with the other 'commentors' - send it back! I would say that it was the restaurant wasting the food, not you!

It is hard to say only on your vid but that looks more like Pollock than Cod. Pollock is white, flacky and a good Cod substitute. But if fried too long will turn to mush.
I think you could be right as the fish disintegrated too easily
It is probably cod. It has been battered and fried frozen which causes the "mush".
I applaud them using such an unusual space and making it work. Having worked in food for over 30 years, a bad manager and a bad cook can really bring down a restaurant. I imagine that they used to have good cooks but they moved on and now they have someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Hence the review change.
Yeah, I thought the same.
👍
No not harsh at all, fair comment. Food looked unappealing ❤
I agree I think they have done very well to create an unusual space, clearly something has changed in regards to who is cooking the food
