The CRAZIEST FISH AND CHIP SHOP I've Ever REVIEWED - A BRUTAL REVIEW!

- I'm back in Norwich today and I've headed to the best fish and chip shop in the whole city named The Grosvenor. It has to be the craziest fish and chip shop I've ever seen, they've built it into a small grotto... I wasn't crazy about the food on offer though!

Hi everyone. Apologies for the audio in some sections of this video. Unfortunately, the restaurant was playing quite loud music. Hope you enjoy the video!
Recorded the end outside my college 😂
I’ve heard that restaurants do this if they think your going to give them a bad review, no joke
Gary, I can’t believe you’re apologizing for that wonderful music!! Apparently, that’s the best thing at the restaurant, according to your food review. 🤦♀️
@@GaryEats Enjoyed the video a lot more than you enjoyed the food!!!
Your a good man Gary, I live vicariously through your reviews, never eat out but love watching you do it mate 🎉
Don’t ever apologise for giving a poor score for a poor experience. Please keep your integrity Gary. Everyone knows you bend over backwards to be balanced with all of your comments. Hopefully the owners take the comments on board and use the feedback to improve 👍
This.
One of the main reasons Gary has grown so much is due to his integrity and fair judgment…
Take Mike Chen (strictly dumpling) for example. He loves everything and anything. It just gets to a point where what he’s saying holds no weight with fake and loving reviews time after time.
Keep it up Gary 👌🏻
PS. Gravy does go with fish and chips 😉
@GoroTheDog-v5b Yes it does!!! If it's a nice gravy.
@DavidWard-z8x yep 100% gary please don't ever change, we love the way you do these reviews xx
@@GoroTheDog-v5b Well, it goes with chips.
Gary currently has the best job in the world and is also giving so many people a lot of pleasure. Perfect.
Well worth his 19 grand a month!
@@terranceparsons5185 When you earn 19K a month then you shouldn't be worried about the price of the food
I agree, it is a good job most of the time
I admire how Gary still personally replies to peoples comments as his popularity has soared. Really appreciate that, mate. Makes you stand out. Best to you and the cameraman!
I do try my best Paul!
@GaryEats: My late great Mum said "As long as you try your best, that's what counts". Cheers, Gary.
I 100% agree ..not only do we get a great and honest review but Gary goes that extra mile
Well said. I couldn’t agree more!
@@paulc1553 That is one of the reasons why this is my favourite TH-cam channel.
Thanks for taking one for the team Gary, your face said it all !
Agree. Gary really didn't want to eat that, but he has said he hates wasting food. Sometimes you have to - don't put yourself through it Gary. Great video
I appreciate that, thank you... just so disappointing
Gary you are not a idiot but a lovely gentleman, that's why a lot of people love your video and keep watching them,Thank you for your videos

Excellent comment. We all love watching Gary’s reviews. Long may they continue 🥳👏👍

3.5 / 10 The chip shop's reputation has been well & truly BATTERED.
😆
And soggy at that. Pissed on or off..... 😂
An honest review is all you can ask for - without fear or favour!
Lol clever pun but I really do try to be fair and positive
Look up about making up jokes, much training do you require! 😀😀😀
How sad is this? On the doorstep of the once busiest seaport in the country, and you get poor quality, FROZEN fish. Woeful.
This was very disappointing
About 120 miles from London's once busiest docks in the realm. You might have got a Yarmouth kipper, or a Cromer crab, or a herring from further north: Grimsby. In Norwich, the cod may have been sourced from Iceland. The store, not the country, and not thawed out properly.
@@pippin1ful Indeed. I was thinking about Lowestoft back in the day.
Look more closely.. The majority of white fish being served in the UK at the moment comes from Russia of all places!
@@moonchild666 Just what I thought.
Food reviewing is all about being objective and independent each and every time, and our Gary delivers every time. Sometimes he comes across a poor experience and he simply says it as it is - great work!
That is very kind to say thank you very much, Rich
I think they are more interested in interior ahem "design", rather than actual food these days. One to avoid, clearly. Thanks for taking one for the team!
No problem. I think I am the only one who like the interior lol
Got to love the dedication to honest reviews. Not just cherry picking, but braving the dodgy ones so we don't have to.

Loud music in an Anderson shelter with disappointing food? Not for me Gary. Thanks for taking one for the team on this one! 🤢 x
No problem Wendy, take care
Thanks Wendy. The Anderson shelter remark made me snort my coffee back through my nose! It’s exactly that.

instagram is so 2010 ,this is for tiktok
I always enjoy how authentic Gary’s reviews are. He took one for the team with this review.
Thank you very much, Karen
As soon as the food arrived, I thought this won't be good. The chips looked awful and the fishcake, like a cow pat. Shocking.
The fish cake looked like an ice hockey puck! 😂
The chips were really poor, very rare to see that
I thought the fishcake looked like a burger.
Wasn’t me.
I thought it all, except the chips, looked as if they had been cooked in dirty oil, and overcooked. I worked in a chippy many years ago, and that fishcake and fish both looked as I describe.
The red stars give it a Soviet ‘vibe’ - Remember, in Russia, the soggy fish eats YOU, and the fluorescent peas were probably from Chernobyl… 😂
That was very funny

If I owned a restaurant....I would be absolutely crapping my pants if I saw you walk in gary. Your balanced, honest reviews carry the truth.
Hopefully, the restaraunts that receive negative reviews take it on the chin, and they use criticism as a tool to use for future improvement
I guess the cheque's in the post?
Some people may prefer the food the way it is. Personally I hate crunch on fries or batter.
You'd only be crapping your pants if you knew you were serving up shite. If you took pride in what was being sent out to every customer, you'd be rubbing your hands when Gary walked in, because like you said - always honest.
@RobertMcguirk-nk1ni I think you'd still be a tad nervy regardless.
You'd want and need your chefs to be putting in a solid, reliable performance. Absolutely no mistakes etc
@@davidmccaffrey4020 agreed
Love this video as you truly exercise your real knowledge of food preparation and deconstruction of the food and what they did wrong. They should be paying you for this advice as you hit the nail on the head, what is wrong, and how they could have fixed it! As Always IMPRESSED!
Thank you Johnny. I think it was just very bland, that was the major issue. The fish too wet and made it unappetising to eat
@@GaryEats The skill is knowing why it was too wet and what they did wrong. That's what makes the difference: You're not some random-tasting food. That's why your comments and opinions have weight! Too many people these days have opinions without the insight and knowledge to back them up! Knowledge without arrogance is a true skill these days of not only character but also being an artisan of your craft! Good Work!
I'm pretty sure that they had frozen the fish from fresh. They probably have one or two deliveries a week rather than daily and keeping it on ice in a box and they've chucked it in domestic chest freezers. Fish needs to be blast frozen to maintain its integrity, if its frozen in a domestic freezer, the ice crystals form and break down the tissue resulting in a soggy mess. So its a storage problem but It could be that their suppliers are doing it.
Your face, Gary, after tasting the mushy peas! Priceless, who needs a verbal review 🙄 by far one of the most entertaining, enthusiastic, trusted reviewer on the tube. 👏👏👏
That is very kind to say thank you
I applaud them using such an unusual space and making it work. Having worked in food for over 30 years, a bad manager and a bad cook can really bring down a restaurant. I imagine that they used to have good cooks but they moved on and now they have someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Hence the review change.
Yeah, I thought the same.
👍
No not harsh at all, fair comment. Food looked unappealing ❤
I agree I think they have done very well to create an unusual space, clearly something has changed in regards to who is cooking the food
Yep exactly what I was thinking, they had good staff and they have gone and not the owner runs it themselves to show how easy it was. Or something like that.
Hi Gary, brilliant as usual, I tune in for the honesty and humility, very much a man of the people telling it the way it is.
I don’t like giving bad reviews, but I have to tell you what it was like
Gary, you really need to start complaining and sending food back or at least asking for some of the bill to be refunded. Unfortunately I’m finding it harder and harder to find good food at a good price these days. Everyone seems to have lowered their standards and charging through the roof for mediocre food
Agreed I keep getting let down anywhere I go.
I understand that Paul but in a fish and chip shop, I'm not sure...
@@GaryEatsI don't think it really matters what the Establishment is. If the food is poor complain. But if they have seen the video I don't think there can be left in no doubt what you thought about the majority of the food quality. Another great vid Gary.
@@GaryEats I have sent chippy food back, you are paying for decent food regardless..
I felt your pain Gary-very disappointing. Looked good but no taste, no good. Get back up to Yorkshire for proper fish & chips boys!

Hi Gary. You’re honesty is refreshing. You tell it what it is. That’s why you have so many people watching youre videos. You’re a proper gentlemen thank you👍👍

It’s amazing what the difference between the eyes and taste can be…usually a place going downhill is either change of owner or chef..what a pity…
I thought it was going to be excellent when it first came out but the chips were dry and bland, the fish was wet and mushy and the sauces... no comment.
What a real shame.. 5 years ago this was BY FAR the best chippy in Norwich but I had some about 2 months ago and I have to agree with you Gary.. they have indeed dropped the baton here! Unfortunately they’re surviving on an old reputation which won’t last long in a small place like Norwich
@mitchybooooy I'm assuming they are under new management, do you know? Such a shame
I'm very sorry to hear that, I thought it was going to be a hit!
@@GaryEats you’re just a few years too late lol! Maybe they will have an epiphany and sort things out.. us folk of Norwich do hope so!
@@lmoein no it’s the same couple that have owned it for years.. it may have new managers but I couldn’t tell you

I’m pleased you enjoyed this one Martin. I didn’t. lol 😂
A fish and chip shop in an Anderson bomb shelter. Now that's different. And I'm old enough to have sat in one during air raids. Most ended up as garden sheds except this one. What a pity the food didn't live up to the presentation. Thanks for sharing, as always, Gary.
Wow are you really? I would truly love to hear your stories.
I spent the duration from February 1940 in and out of our Anderson, nearly dying from pneumonia due to the cold, damp conditions during my first year, during the Blitz, blown off my bunk on to the concrete floor on my bonce by the blast from a parachute mine, a year or so on, then a Doodlebug blowing up a potato clamp, a few hundred yards up the road. Mother decided to up sticks and took my brother and me up to where she was born in rural North Norfolk, until Dad was healed from his wounds from Normandy, and was released from hospital and the army. We returned to "Doodlebug Alley" and their fight path over our house has ceased. Mother used our Anderson for a chicken house. They became my pets until Grandad dispatched two for Christmas Dinner. I flatly refused to eat any!
@@pippin1ful what a wonderful story Richard. I'm a bit younger than you but my best memories as a kid are of playing on bomb sites.
Every person in that kitchen needs to be sacked.

Your videos and summaries obviously get the balance of your feelings just right when it comes to scoring, because every time I've watched and listened I've nailed the score myself. Today was no exception. You pondered on the score, and I thought, "well that's only a 3 to 4 mark". You said 3.5.
Every time. It's uncanny. 😊
Thank you very much that means a lot, I try to be as fair and concise as possible. I really do not enjoy being negative

Wow, this used to be my go-to chip shop when I was at Uni in Norwich in the late 90s! Amazing it's still there. Back then it was a proper chippy. Shame they've gone down the "Instagrammable" route rather than concentrate on the food.
I thought it would be so much better but the recent reviews seem right
Haha aww the bending of the fish cake really cracked me up. It didn't snap in half, it didn't break to pieces - it bent. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you, The Bending Fish Cake!!!!!!!
I was a bit surprised, Robert
Aye, and me 😂😂😂😂😂
What a shame the food wasn't up to much. The curry sauce was pure gloop, radioactive mushy peas and an MDF fish cake.
It's a pity because that sauna you were sitting in looked so promising😆
Thanks for another enlightening video 👍
MDF remark and sauna reference! Very good indeed. And spot on. Those tins looked like something had been operated on. It’s always a red flag when a foodie place resorts to such gimmicks.

@@anth1111 hahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes Gary for experts like ourselves once they start cooking in the wrong fat the flavor disappears, it is critical to keep most mono unsaturated vegetable oils away from fish and chips. Cooking media in terms of quality and outcome in descending order I would recommend the following, duck fat, beef Tallow, lard, peanut oil, olive oil, solid cooking oils made from animal fats.
Duck fat or extra virgin olive oil in my kitchen. I do love some beef dripping on thick toast over a coal fire. A little seasoning and away y'go. Gran has gone, with her fire place, but the memory lingers on. I still collect the drippings from my roasts to spread on toast, but the coal flavour is no more. Still tasty though!
Thank you very much for all the information Seamus. I agree.

Eww quote ' the mushy peas were vile'. Vile is a very strong word for Gary
It wasn’t good unfortunately
Just how can anyone go wrong with mushy peas? I found a box of Bigga in the back of my cupboard over 10 years past the best before date, but they are dried and no sign of spoilage so why not. I followed the instructions and used the tablets and 24 hour soak and rinse and they were great.
There is no excuse for a chippy with modern supplies.
As a northerner I can promise you whatever that nonsense was, it's nothing like the chip gravy we have up here!

Gary normally I agree with you on markings, but that, despite the quirky decor, gets a 1/10 from me, you’re not paying for the decor, you’re paying for edible food and if you can’t stomach it then IMHO your rating was far too high! The peas and curry sauce looked full of modified maize starch to me no wonder they tasted rank!
I understand your point, Bill, but in fairness it was a big portion even though it wasn’t quality and the tiger prawns saved the day, you know I respect your opinion
What I like about Gary's reviews is his genuine excitement in going to try the food and then the disappointment when it doesn't match up to expectations, it's clear that he doesn't take any pleasure from a bad experience. He's not going in with ridiculously high standards either, but just giving it a go. It's valuable consumer advice on the British food industry, unfiltered and honest. If Gary's not happy, then I certainly won't be giving it a go.

This might be a myth but I heard that back in the day, certain fish & chips shops in Scotland used to sell single cigarettes to smoke while you waited for your fish supper. If true it sounds delightfully grim but it certainly adds character to a takeaway (like wrapping your chips in newspaper).
This was true in parts of Lancashire and Merseyside as late as 1991 when I lived there.
how is that grim?
Interesting, didn't know that
Am from Glasgow, and most places back in the day used to sell a single ( as they were called) for 5p. Unfortunately, it was mostly underage children who bought them. My friends and I used to buy ours from the ice cream van that sat outside our high school. Ah!, those were the days. Now it's back to the fish.

My cousin lives at Norwich. Unusual and quirky settings. Portion size is great. Chips don’t look crispy at all. Prawns are crispy as I heard the crunch. Crispy cod. Batter should not be wet on the inside. Agree with you about the fish being frozen and not patted dry before placing it in the batter for deep frying. I am sure mushy peas shouldn’t be sour. Thanks for your review Gary. I do like your honesty.
Thank you very much for your excellent comment. It’s really appreciated.
The chippys on Norwich market are superior to that rubbish.
I visited a seafood stall in Norwich Market, and he was selling delicious seafood I'd never seen before in seafood superior France. As I was embarking on my 800mile drive home the next day, there was nothing I could buy. Sadly.
Thank you for the information
you could tell before you even tried that the chips were under done and stale (seen it too often myself). You are too nice to be honest - that was more like 1.5 out of 10. No way was that edible.
It was a very poor offering, and for the first time I did not eat everything
I know there are other reviewers out there but I don't bother to click on any of their advertising thumbnails, I just stick with you due to your presentation style and honesty. Your review of this chip restaurant seems spot on to me and now one to avoid which is a pity because it's their job to put good food on the table, easy as !
That’s really appreciated thank you Richard
Hi Gary! Very quirky interior, though the downstairs area does not look claustrophobe friendly. The food looked OK when it hit the table, but as soon as you had a few bites, it sadly looked like it was going to go downhill quickly. When you have beautifully cooked chips & an excellent gravy, it can be such a fantastic treat. The cod seemed like a real let-down & the sauces dreadful. I'm sure you don't like giving harsh reviews when the food is disappointing, but hopefully this restaurant takes note & they can make some improvements. Any good manager or owner should take on fair, valid & honest criticism. I'm sorry this one was not a great experience Gary, hopefully the next is better! Your score was fair because if you know you are going to struggle to get through it, it's not worth more than a few points. Take care & safe travels to you both. 💙
Gary and Son are doing a great job for the catering industry. Restauranteures need to heed his reviews and get a grip! (did I spell that right?)
@@pippin1ful Totally agree Richard. Anyone familiar with this channel knows that Gary will only give an honest, quality review. I've watched all of his vlogs & have never seen him rate something down, unless it was deserved. With the growing audience here, I'd hope that restauranteur's do take note if the food is below average or poor. PS: I just let spell check take that one! 😅
Spot on Erin. Great comment and I really do not like giving negative reviews!
@@GaryEats Thanks Gary. We always know that you are going to provide a genuine review... One of the many reasons your channel gets more & more popular. Enjoy the rest of your week. 😊
Those peas looked like guacamole. What a disappointing meal.
Wasn’t the best
Hi Gary. I am a Yorkshireman and I have to agree we do put on a good show when it comes to Fish and Chips. I have relatives in Kent who rave about their local chipy but they do look and taste very similar to what you have just experienced. Can't fault you for your honesty and you always look for a positive .
We do struggle to find good fish and chips down south
The Only Good Thing Is The Music Playing in The Background ! Not Rapping Crap Or Radio 1
😂😂🤣🤣
Not harsh at all Gary it looked terrible
Thank you very much, Gary
Wow, this place seems like the ultimate plot twist of fish and chips! Quirky grotto vibes, but I guess the fish need a bit of Yorkshire magic! Hope they bounce back!!
The fish looked like a melted shoe…👞
He did not taste that good Deborah
Please don't listen to people who say gravy doesn't go on fish and chips. Pray for them instead, they are not well.
As we saw , it seriously depends on the quality of the gravy😊
@@catherineparr5489 Well fish and chips depends on the quality of the fish as well as we saw :P
Depends on the gravy!
He'd of stood a better chance up north for gravy with fish and chips.
@@carltonlambert7608 I always assumed it's normal. I'm from Manchester originally. We always had gravy with it.
Awww, and u still find a positive 😊you are a true gentleman Gary x
That’s very quick to say, thank you x
Did I make it first Gary?
Sad sad mug 😂
You did indeed Philip
You sound like a 14 year old 😢
I think your dad was first or you wouldn't be here to write that comment 😅
@@PaulBrady-tz7ph 🤣 I know. Would you believe I’m 61 and I’ve being trying to get first for ages! I’ve no excuse, I’m a sad old man. 🙄👍
When I saw the fish and fish cake I immediately thought that the colour of the batter didn't look right so it's no wonder it didn't taste right.Yesh I am with you on fish n chips from Yorkshire 😊
Thank you very much, Stephen
Its a shame when people let their standards possibly slip and then they lose their reputation, but a fair and honest review.
I do understand your point and hopefully they improve
That's a 2 from me. You've just done them a huge favour with that post mortem, Gary. A real shocker. They'll have to up their game.
I really hope they do up their game, Dale
Not every meal is going to score 10 but you are there to review what you were presented with. I sense you being reticent in giving a low score but having followed you from the early days you always demonstrate fairness so maintain your integrity and score it "as it is".
Great content as always.
Thank you very much, Michael. As you know I do struggle to give poor scores to independent restaurants.
