Wood Thrush? Perhaps a Bicknell's? On May 22, 1975, I walked up to Galehead Hut via North Twin. That early in the season there was crusty snow on the north side going up: at every step I broke through the snow and rubbed my calves raw. It was, of course, exhausting. The hut was not yet officially open for the season, so I exchanged cleaning chores for a bunk. After work there wasn't much to do, but I found a beat-up copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles. I can no long backpack, but over the next forty-five years I taught Sherlock Holmes in college English classes. I owe a large part of my career to Galehead Hut--and in retirement I still study and write about the denizens of far-away 221B Baker Street. While I was there, the helicopter arrived with steaks--but there wasn't enough gas to cook them. I didn't actually climb Galehead until a year later . . . You video brings back wonderful memories--although I have to say the hut was a good deal more "rustic" (understatement) fifty years ago.
A new favourite hike for me. My wife was not with me for the overnight along the side of the trail, then to the summit of Galehead the next day, so I shared this this with my her. Thank you
Thanks for the lovely video. The foreshadowing of the weather was a neat effect. I wonder if the Pine Marten was hired to keep the mice population under control over the winter. I'm sure it would like to meet up with that hare!
i love your channel! just had my Sunday breakfast while watching your latest adventure. I really need to stay at a hut sometime as it looks like fun. Maybe you could do a video on what to bring on a stay over? :) I love your jazz music you add, especially "Sunny San Franscisco", I have added to my own playlists. Have a wonderful day Rachel.
Wow this is a great comment because I've been wanting to this gear video and keep giving up and deleting my footage. I've been over-complicating it. Maybe this week I will keep it simple and just get it done! Thank you so much.
Nice! IDing the birdies too! Love it. I stayed there some time ago with the idea of doing the horrors of Owl's HEad from there. Left after breakfast, went down the very interesting Twin Brook Tr. to 13 Falls. When i got to the Slide, I saw I"d be very late for dinner and...turned back! 😆😆🙂
That sounds like a good path if you had more time or if it was one-way. I'd like to see 13 Falls and camp there. Not sure I ever need to see Owl's Head again but people tell me I will change my mind someday.
Bugs, already? Well dang. We usually do a few weeks of trekking the Whites, spring and fall; this year we're late. FYI: The military jets you hear are likely using the special use military airspace called Yankee 1 and Yankee 2 MOA (Military Operating Area). It covers approx one-third of NH, from central to north, very roughly Plymouth to Littleton.
What, no swim? Sorry I missed this hike when you first did, haven't been to Galehead but you have convinced me to add it to my list, hopefully before the snow flies!!
Another great hike Wow that sure is some extreme weather you had. Nice to see all that nice looking running water coming off the mountain. Here in Pennsylvania we are close to drought conditions. Very dry especially this early in the spring
Hi. Yes, I have all the worries but mostly when I am home. Once I am out there it feels just as safe/dangerous as everything else like driving a car, flying on a plane, going to the city alone. I do try to take safety steps to lower the dangers or plan for recoveries from unfortunate events. Also I tend to use common trails where I pass many people. I have communication with the husband frequently. And I sleep at the hut or near other campers, etc. The worry is the worst when I am home planning but getting out there feels mostly good with a shred of excitement and risk. Start with a low risk scenario and build up your comfort range.
I love your videos! You inspire me to get out more! By the way, what hiking shoes are you wearing? They look kind of different! Thanks for another great video.
Altra Olympus shoes. My favorite ever (so far). Large toe box, zero drop "sneaker" but has a Vibram hiking rubber sole that grips rocks like Spider Man. Lightweight. Reg price expensive but you can find them 40 percent off several times per year. I wore heavy boots too many years and this is so much better. Must get the little gaiter too, which keeps pebbles and pine needles out.
A couple of years ago, my fiancée and I saw you in Moose Brook Park on your bike. We didn't know you were a TH-cam celebrity. Would you recommend another campground which is spacious and kind of private?
Hi - I wrote back on your other comment question for this one also, with a list. Always good to call them up because the campground staff can be very helpful and tell you things you didn't even think about asking!

Wow, this is great. You should write it all up and submit your story to the Appalachia Journal.
Thank you for making your videos and sharing them!
Thank you too. The positive comments add to the fun of making the videos.
Nice video of the trail to the Galehead Hut. I’ve stayed there twice. It’s my favorite of the huts. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment. It is a special place for sure!
Thanks for sharing - great editing, pace, and effects!
Much appreciated!

Yes, I agree - great one worth doing again!
Your soup looks delicious and must have been satisfying and comforting.
Ah, thanks. It was great but I guess I was a little hungrier up there than I would be at home. So the cookies were a welcome treat!

The pine marten was going to be relocated but they were having a tricky time catching him. Must be a smart creature.

Yes, She does pick out awesome music for her videos. 👍🏻

Oh wow, that is super interesting about the jets. Thanks for telling me. I love seeing them.

Yes, Galehead is one on my list of "so good I need to go there again."

Hope you get some rain soon! I think of Pennsylvania as a green garden type of place but I've only been through there a few times.
😍❤️
Loved your video this week! Do you ever get nervous hiking alone? I would love to start hiking more, but do worry about safety

@@RachelWhelton Thanks! I’m going to look for them!
Came from Soule's channel!
