@@lordfezerellii Of course. Gender representation is necessary though for many children to understand others who are different from what is considered “normal”.

Rebecca Sugar putting Ruby in the Wedding Dress was the biggest passive aggressive middle finger to the countries that tried making Ruby male to stop the LGBT representation. And Ruby totally rocked the dress by the way, what a queen.
i find it kind of ironic that the main effect of villains being queer-coded for decades in kids animation is that a lot of queer people grew up loving villains and not being sure why
This video shouldn't have been called "in children's animation," it should have been "in western children's animation." The main characters in Patalliro were in a clear gay relationship all the way back in the 70s.
Yesss, although the anime itself was from the early '80s, the manga was the '70s. Either way, it's considered the first anime to show characters openly in that manner.
i love it how the episode Garnet got married was the same one where Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond attacked. Rebecca really said "you cant skip this episode" and went lmao
If Princess Bubblegum & Marceline the Vampire Queen from Adventure Time are an item together, wouldn't that also make Prince Gumball & Marshall Lee the Vampire King from the alternate universe an item too??
The evil enemy Berg Katse of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman [1972] (brought over as Battle of the Planets [1978]) was a great character both male and female!
Not a single mention of Sailor Moon and the atrocious way they treated Jadeite, Haruka & Michiru, Fisheye or the Sailor Strars in the US localisation? I'm german where they kept the characters queer sometimes. So Sailor Moon was the earliest cartoon where I was taking notice of queer people as a child.
Disney was cray-cray far behind in the "other" relationships. Double-Trouble isn't just a non-binary character from "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power", they're also voiced by a non-binary person in real life. That proves once and for all that DreamWorks is better than Disney; they're not afraid to take risks.

Title should be “in the US” In Latin America, for the most part (or from what I remember), they didn’t care if cartoons or anime characters were gay.. they would translate it with the gayness and everything From the top of my head, Sailor Moon, Sakura Card Captor, Saint Seiya were soooo different in the US as they tried to hide the gay parts In Latin America it was there
I remember seeing "Ferdinand The Bull" as a kid. I was always much more peaceful and quiet than the other boys. And seeing this muscular, strong bull being gentle and loving flowers was for me like: "There is no rule in nature that one thing is not combineable with the other!".
Same here. When I was little my mom would let me paint my nails (My dad and her would fight about it) but I did it, and my mom loved me every step of my path :). I’m gay, and a have the most lovely mom :)… I don’t speak to my dad, and that kinda hurts… To end on a happy note my mom used to be called ✨The Faghag✨ because all of her friends were gay, trans or lesbian Now all but 1 of her children are in one way or another LGBTQ+ 💀, and she’s proud of all of us 😊.
@@SamuelSamuelSamuel1 that's such a wonderful story. So many stories queer people tell are sad, because life is hard for many of us, so it's amazing to see stories like yours!

As a Malaysian that watched Steven Universe on TV, I was surprised to find out Ruby and Sapphire actually got married! They actually cut out the scene in my country because I remember LGBTQ+ isn't allowed in my country.. quite sad, but at least I know that the representation are shown!
omg ikr they cut out everything lgbtq+ related, including one major scene of a lesbian wedding from cw supergirl's finale.. but anyways check out She-ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix 🥰

Sex education on Netflix has an openly ace character! There’s also an aroace character in the anime Bloom Into You though the term aroace isn’t used I think
I still remember when sailor moon was dubbed into English they made edits and cuts to make sailor Neptune and sailor Uranus cousins. I could tell something was off so I looked it up online and saw in the original anime they were partners and lovers. Then Sailor stars was supposedly never dubbed because they didn't knew how american audiences would handle the sailor stars being one gender when transformed (female) and disguised as another when not transformed on earth (male).
@@taxevader5386 there was also a trans woman I believe that was one of their villains in the later seasons and two of the main villains for season 1 were in a gay relationship but that was only in the 1st anime I believe
I never realised just how important representation is (albeit I supported it) until Todd came out as asexual on BoJack Horseman and I broke down in tears because I had never, ever seen another asexual on screen before. It was the most incredible feeling; excitement and happiness, yes, but also an immense sense of... *relief*. If there had been representation like that when I was a kid, it could have saved me so many years of confusion and shame. But if there was I never saw it.
It makes me so happy to hear about people coming into their sexuality and gender identity, I hope you're doing well! Thanks for sharing this story, I'm reading all these comments and feeling so much better after a really hard day.
same! it made me so happy to see asexual representation especially in bojack horseman, i felt so happy that bojack and others accepted todd. it made me cry.
The video is implying that she was always a lesbian or coded as such and that is simply untrue. She was created in the 1960's and, because of the prevailing mindset, it is almost certain that she was not designed to be queer in any way shape or form. Now Scooby Doo has many different versions and iterations that are always exploring new takes on the character. Because of this, it's impossible to say there is a "definitive" or "canon" version of the character that applies across all continuities. In some versions Velma is sarcastic, in other versions she's timid. Sometimes she's white, but one time she was Asian. This variation can, theoretically, also apply to her sexuality. So it is theoretically possible for Velma to be straight in one continuity and gay or bi in another. But again, at best this only applies to that specific continuity. You can't say Mystery Incorporated Velma is gay and therefore Velma in all Scooby Doo media is gay, to assert so would simply be untrue. So now the question is has Velma ever been labeled as queer in any official Scooby Doo media. And the answer to this is honestly no. The closest they got was in Mystery Incorporated where a producer said Velma was gay 7+ years after the show finished airing. Now there is debate about whether something is official if it's confirmed outside the show in a tweet or interview. In my book, the answer is no, if you want something to be canon it needs to explicitly be proven in the show. Not to mention anyone can say something after the fact, but that doesn't mean it was true when that product was actually airing. But even if you don't have a view on canon as strict as me, I think labeling Velma as gay in a social media post completely defeats the point of representation. Representation is about seeing yourself or other people in media and if you need to reveal the truth 7 years later for people to realize that a character was written as gay, that's not representation. Because the fact is, there was nothing in that show that ever confirmed Velma was gay. Ironically, the show makes a much stronger case for Velma being straight given how much screentime is dedicated to showing her relationship with Shaggy. So that is my absurdly long comment about Velma and the whole issue of her being gay. Will Velma be written as gay in the future? Maybe. In fact, WB has hinted that's the plan. But has she been written as gay before? A _very_ generous kinda. At best, Velma was written with the intention of being gay in a single iteration of the tv show but it was so poorly communicated that you wouldn't know it just by watching the show. *TL;DR You cannot label Velma as gay because there are many versions of her and the video is not approaching the issue with enough nuance. In many versions, Velma is straight. At best, the character was gay in a single tv show but even that is debatably canon.*
People watching Steven universe. Genocide: oof, that's sad. Kids will get it. Gay characters: oh my gosh its too adult how r our kids gonna understand its complex stuff just don't talk about it its fine
Well, considering that many Western cartoons have an age rating of 6+, it is not surprising that parents and adults are outraged, because initially companies create a product in order to make money, and money is hard to earn when you risk getting sued by Karens, if cartoons were originally made for teenagers, there would be less outrage, however, this will not happen, because it is difficult to shake the wallet from the teenagers and adults.
Rebecca Sugar changed the game with Steven Universe. Ruby and Sapphire’s love create one of the best characters ever, Garnet. Truly wish Steven Universe was airing when I was growing up. It’s taken this long for representation to evolve in media, and we still have more to go!
Man Arthur was really ahead of it's time. The fact they turn around (granted 15+ years later) and full on screen two men getting married is fantastic. I remember why I loved this show so much
When i started having crushes on boys in schools I thought something was wrong with me and it really screwed me up. I never saw gay couples anywhere, and when i did it was seen as a bad thing. I spent years pretending to like girls, trying to change, scared and with nobody to talk to... if I often saw gay couples treatated as normal I wouldn't have panicked and had a horrible time growing up
Rebecca Sugar has said that she had to really fight for the network to allow her to put the gay characters in the show so while they are better then Disney for agreeing to do this at all, they shouldn't get most of the credit.
The creator has been getting a LOT of bullshit from Disney for The Owl House, recently a trailer aired for the newest season, which included spoilers she wasn't even told would be shown.
This is one reason why I absolutely love Steven Universe, I'm actually glad Rebecca was the first Animator to show an Lgbtq couple and have shows with LGBT characters sky rocket
I was at first, afraid of making stories with characters more verbally saying they’re sexualities. But after watching this,I am confident in making my characters more vocal about themselves.
What's different between now than 30 years ago is we must accept that these people exist and not persecute them. I've watched gay shows before and enjoyed them because they are good shows. If a gay man wants to act out the flamboyant stereotypical gay character then that's his choice. The way I see it today is that straight people have accepted gay men, however there is still hostility towards lesbian women. I cringe when I see other straight men making lesbian jokes, they are just not funny. Most straight people think trans people are basically drag queens, probably because the only experience we have of them is seeing drag queens in gay clubs (yes, straight people go to gay clubs too). I can't comment on non binary / gender fluid, you hear so much about them but I've never actually met one. I think this group will be the hardest for people to accept because despite what the media say, they are extremely rare. It's not that we won't ever accept them, it's just that we don't understand them.
YESSS thank you I'm glad you as a straight man can see this too...gay men are so much more accepted and well represented in media than lesbians it's strange but i think it has something to do with people still holding some sort of entitlement over women's body.
I feel like it's different kinds of non-acceptance. Plenty of straight homophobic men hate gay men but are "ok" with lesbians because they fetishize them and perceive them as less of a threat to their masculinity. I don't think either group has full acceptance or has it much better than the other.
@@taxevader5386 exactly. Like where are gay men mostly accepted but lesbians not. A woman wearing a suit or more masculine clothing is way less controversial than a man doing the reverse. The highest group killed in America is trans people of color especially MTF which transphobes see as men and an attack on male masculinity. We are all oppressed. Idk where this person is coming from saying gay men are entirely accepted.
They obviously meant American cartoons. They can't be assed to look at the rest of the world. They have to maintain an illusion of social progress, even though trans and queer have been present in japanese medias for decades and sex has been around for...well, forever.
Growing up as a bi girl in a Christian household I never had anything to count on and I felt so alone. These characters really helped me find myself. I've always felt like a background character in my own life, but now I feel like I don't need anyone's permission.

Low-key kinda disappointed you didn't mention Korrasami more. While it is true that we wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for the groundbreaking work Rebecca Sugar did. Korrasami was literally the stepping stone that started it all and it's kind of annoying that they get overlooked when we talk about lgbtq rep in western children's media.
Korrasami was NOT good representation. Holding hands at the end of the series in the last 5 seconds is not good representation. I’m aware they’re openly together in the comics, but children watching the show (and like 90% of avatar fans) most likely don’t read those.
@@cryptidnip you missed the point. Korrasami allowed for better representation they literally covered so much in terms of LGBT representation that had stereotypes. The point is that when the whole country is against who you are you need visibility no matter what. Korra had there hands tied and could not do much else. Without the brave decision of Legend of Korras ending there probably would not be a Steven universe in the way we know today.
@@cryptidnip well it was in 2014, especially considering the restrictions from the network. I mean they almost didn't even make the show because the creators wanted a female protagonist. It was the representation they could get within the context of their particular time and it contributed to more explicit portrayals being made.
I didn't know Rebecca Sugar was gonna be in this video when I opened it, my heart inmediately went 💜💜💜💖 Steven Universe is not only a good representation of love and kindness but also it's so beatiful.

She said they are “cooler”. She wasn’t erasing any coolness from straight people all together. And it is true that Disney hero’s are meant to be perfect and heteronormative and at times it makes them bland and a little boring. Like aurora for example,. Is there any defining trait to Aurora? @@_Error__ Yaoi is the worst, most of those ships were abusive, toxic, pedophile or incest. Yuri (girlsxgirls relationship), was very underrated back then but most of those lesbian pairings were more healthy and realistic and were not extremely sexualized like Yaoi pairings.
I love all of these examples of representation from my childhood, like Him, Bugs Bunny in Drag, the gems (although they’re genderless), etc. It shouldn’t be prominent to young kids, but it should be something that some of them relate to. Just like romance. Romance and sexuality should never be a huge part of television. It should be treated like a normal thing
I feel like the internet romanticizes stuff to much WITH LITERALLY EVERY CHARACTER BEING SHIPPED WITH ANOTHER. I doesn't matter if it is a show about object OR FRIKIN GODZILLA MOVIES. PEOPLE WILL FIND A WAY TO FORCE ROMANCE IN SOME WEIRD WAY. I remember being shocked when dora was not shipped with anybody in the cartoon.
I don't normally comment but seeing a lot of dense people here I have to share my thoughts: Being gay or lgbtq isn't inherently sexual y'know... just like being straight isn't automatically sexual. Whenever you see a girl crushing on a boy do you go "oh no stop it you're shoving it in everyone's faces". Having crushes on people at a young age is normal and healthy to have. You get to learn about your different relationships with others; and it's not like that boy and girl are gonna automatically end up dating right? It's just normal to show kids that "it's ok to have interest in other people, and have feelings of love for them, someday when you're older you'll find that person to share that interest with". How come it all suddenly comes to a stop when queer kids come into the equation? There are such things as queer kids too, yknow. Why can't *they* be considered normal? Please reevaluate why you think this way and become humble enough to have the compassion to educate yourself. You can end up spitting the same rhetoric that homophobes and transphobes preach that send us backward. The reason lgbtq characters are important in children's animation is to show that is normal for these people to exist; most importantly, that it's normal for kids who ARE lgbtq the exist as they are. Kids learn about straight, crushes, straight relationships, straight marriages at a fairly young age... so why not queer ones? I promise, kids are more intelligent than you think. (Also this is coming from a person who's country their from is doesn't support same-sex relationships or gender non-conforming people; I know people like me need this more than you do)
So, what's happened here is that you've become confused. The language used in normalization is designed to do that. Allow me to break it down for you. "Homophobia" is a nonsense word. Correctly transliterated, it would mean "fear of the same". A "homophobe" would be someone who is frightful of people who are like themselves. Of course that's not what the word is supposed to mean. It's supposed to mean fear of people who are different, or something like that. And of course the accusation isn't of fear, but of "hate". "Heterosexual" is also a silly word because it's redundant. There is nothing denoted by it which isn't denoted in the root word "sex". "Sex" means sexual difference. So, union between male and female is the only sexual "orientation" which is describable as sexual. The only purpose for the word "Heterosexual" is to prefigure a false paradigm by which normal sexuality lies as a point on a gradient coequal with "homosexuality", a word for same-sex eroticism, which is in fact anti-sexual. But there isn't a gradient between these points. There is a dichotomy of 97% normal sexuality and 3% disordered erotic fixations. This normal condition is therefore attacked by the champions of abnormality with another nonsense word, "heteronormativity". "Heteronormativity" is the word cultural arsonists use to problematize normal sexuality. They posit that an injustice is evident in the way children may freely be exposed to images and messaging which normalizes normal sexuality: Things like mom sleeping in the same bed as dad and marriages and girls kissing boys and male-female dance couples and so forth. Why, they demand to know, is it not so for men kissing men or men performing drag or worse. It's not so confounding in reality. "Heterosexuality" is, quite simply, the method by which the human species reproduces. It is not a "kink" or a fetish or a deviation from health and normalcy as "homosexuality" is. One may as well ask why fisting isn't as socially privileged as respiration. With all that understood, perhaps it's clearer that, for people who socially identify themselves by their aberrant erotic fixations, reference to their secondary social identities as such are references to their aberrant erotic fixations.
So, if you are reading this, you came to the wrong part of the comments section. There are people who like to write essays around here. Why? Good question. The first guy could've simply said that heterosexual childhood crushes are considered fine, so why aren't gay crushes? However, he choose to use about 3 paragraphs. So unnecessary. I think he makes a good point, except for that I don't like the idea of LGBT so he must be wrong. The second guy took it way overkill. He wrote about 10 paragraphs. Just to simply say he disagrees and the first guy is wrong. However, I am not sure if that is what he said in the end since it was too long to read. These guys must be on computers, typing up thier college entry essays here. It doesn't matter, just prepare to see lots of "Too Long, Didn't Read" comments or "TLDR" comments. Or from the extra lazy, expect the comment "T" Because this was too long to read.
@@clemtoe he might not be confused but you are certainly confusing him. lol. You can't be a good debater if you don't see things from the opponents viewpoint. Humans (or neologists or whatever) create new words to convey a meaning that cannot be extracted by already existing words. What you were doing in your whole essay was breaking down the terms/words to create new meanings out of them. And when you tried to do that you *confused* yourself even more. Now, here are the things which are most probably wrong in your reply: 1. Homophobia has been defined as "fear, hatred or discomfort with people who are gay". While it does seem like it is some sort of anxiety disorders like arachnophobia or acrophobia, it might not always be associated with it. Like I said, there is no point in arguing if its a non sense word or not. Its definition matters. Besides, there are plenty of other words in english which don't really mean what they seem to convey. 2. Hetersexual isn't redundant. Let me explain this by an example. Centuries ago, mathematicians used to think a number can be either rational (1.23, 0.99(bar)) or irrational (pi, e). Then after some people started giving meaning to numbers like sqrt(-1), mathematicians realised there is a whole set of new numbers whose inclusion can solve many problems. They called them "imaginary numbers". _Now that we have imaginary numbers, what would we classify rational+irrational numbers as?_ Inclusion of new numbers became the necessity to classify rational+irrational numbers as Real numbers! The same thing happened with the inclusion of term homosexual as classifying others as heterosexual. So I don't think its redundant. 3. Have you ever met a gay person irl? You frequently used the words like "anti-sexual", " disordered erotic fixations", "abnormality", "fetish", "deviation" as attributes of homosexuality. If you met any gay person did you find these attributes inside them? There are many examples of lgbt people who have contributed to the development of society as much as other straight people. Like Alan Turing who gave us the algorithms and computational strategies by his Turing Machine, most of which have been used to create today's computers and this digital world. Tell me how he could have done this if he was abnormal or deviated? Tim Cook present Ceo of Apple inc. since 2011. Tell me how he has been running the company for so long if he's been subject to disordered erotic fixations and fetishes? Certainly you are wrong somewhere my dear. Sally Ride an Astronaut and a physicist, who also did researches on nonlinear optics and thomson scattering. Tell me how she was able to do all of this just like any other straight person, if according to you, her mind was polluted by sexually stuffs and deviations? Freddie Mercury, of course, I don't need to tell you who he was. How could such a good person write such beautiful songs if according to you, he is abnormal? What I have come to conclusion is that you are biased, blinded and inexperienced. Biased in the way that you never have took time to think from any single gay's perspective. Inexperienced in the sense that you never actually have any real life experience with lgbt person, blinded by the adult websites you spend time scrolling through to get orgasm, and concluding that all gays are like those pornstars. sry if I said anything wrong. thx for reading. :)

I'm so happy that Rebecca Sugar came to our life and her Steven Universe show became the stepping stone for push of LGBT representation nore After that, many shows like She-Ra and Owl House followed
My only problem with this is that most of the couples/relationships in cartoons for lgbtq+ characters feel rushed and slapped together in like 3 episodes. A great example of this is Korrasami (Korra and Asami) in The Legend Of Korra.
I didn't felt rushed at all. Actully I felt very represented by Korrasami. Velma is lesbian? Wait a minute I specifically remember her dating shaggy at once point
Maybe that's what made her realize she's gay
Perhaps she's pansexual?? Not sureee
we all have down points
thats either her awakening or shes bi
Growing up with basically 0 lgbtq+ stuff in kids shows, it felt a bit weird seeing it for the first time, but I am glad it is getting more widespread.

YESSS thank you I'm glad you as a straight man can see this too...gay men are so much more accepted and well represented in media than lesbians it's strange but i think it has something to do with people still holding some sort of entitlement over women's body.
Well hello there, I am agender which makes me non-binary. I am also aro/ace. Nice to meet you!
I feel like it's different kinds of non-acceptance. Plenty of straight homophobic men hate gay men but are "ok" with lesbians because they fetishize them and perceive them as less of a threat to their masculinity. I don't think either group has full acceptance or has it much better than the other.

@kqro bassed and red gummy vitamined
I don't normally comment but seeing a lot of dense people here I have to share my thoughts:
Being gay or lgbtq isn't inherently sexual y'know... just like being straight isn't automatically sexual.
@@clemtoe word
finaly
@@clemtoe he might not be confused but you are certainly confusing him. lol. You can't be a good debater if you don't see things from the opponents viewpoint. Humans (or neologists or whatever) create new words to convey a meaning that cannot be extracted by already existing words. What you were doing in your whole essay was breaking down the terms/words to create new meanings out of them. And when you tried to do that you *confused* yourself even more.
Now, here are the things which are most probably wrong in your reply:
