Came here after seeing your original video. It’s going to be a tough choice which of these to build next Memorial Day weekend I have the money and time and tools at my parents’ place upstate.
These videos gave me a great starting point for adding a slide out drawer to my trunk! I even added a sub and two speakers embedded in the cargo area at the front of the trunk. Thanks for the great videos!
I built the previous design you posted on your channel and use a queen size truck mat in the back with no problems falling in the little gaps near the doors. After watching this video i can imagine how nice it would be to have one big drawer like your new version, two really cuts down on the space available. Having the measurements that you gave last time was a big help for me so if you have them handy it might help someone else who is trying to built your new design. Being able to store the double sleeper piece in the drawer is the biggest plus of this new version in my opinion. Great job!
nice design, ive been thinking about a similar design, but i need it to be taller so the sleeper platform goes over the rear folded seats because im 6'1" and cant fit in the back fully. FYI, those turnbuckles will do next to nothing in the event of an accedent or rollover to keep that drawr unit from flying forward / up. in a 30mph crash, g forces can be around 30g, so take however much your drawr unit weighs and multiply that by 30, and think about the strength of those turnbuckles and the anchor rings.
@@PhoRunner I'm curious about planning the headspace above the platform. I'm getting ready to build my first platform and I'm trying to figure out what I can do for storage underneath without feeling like I"m going to sleep in a coffin 😵
Excellent, that looks real clean. I’ve been wanting to build out the back of my 4runner for a while and this seems like a much better design than your previous model. Looking forward to the build video! Thank you for sharing this!
Check out my latest video as it should be cheaper to build. This one is pricey because of dual slides. About $500. My latest build is cheaper and maybe under $300
Awsome work real your videos just getting started on the outlander journey .2000 4runner 3rd gen balance work and building a4 runner is challenging like your vidos ..never thought i would enjoy wrenching as ive been welding most of my life I actually enjoy it wive thinks iam crazy but she'll be suprised someday any joot thanks
Love the box - couple of questions since you've experienced both : 1) do you prefer the one large drawer or the 2 separate. 2) if you thought you liked the 2 drawer system, would you prefer same size drawers or different sizes? 3) How do you feel about losing 2 inches from your platform while you sleep?
1) The large one is definitely nice for bigger items. The lack of dividers makes things a bit of a mess but I’ve cut down on what I carry now. The single drawer is large when it comes out so getting to the side of it is a bit more work. 2) The 2 drawer was nice since I used one side to cook on all the time. Now I have to pull the slide out to cook which can take up a bit more space. 3) 2 inches doesn’t seem like much.
Sweet setup! I was looking for another video but came across this and glad I did. I was actually looking you build a setup similar to this...I'll let you know how it goes
Love the video just bought a 3ed gen so glade I found you on here currently watching all your videos cant wait for you build video on this build this is exactly what I want for mine and I have no skills when it come to carpenter work lol so I'll need all the help I can get haha
I park in the garage and plug it to house power when I'm at home. Or just unplug it completely if I know i'm not using it for a while. Kinda like RV life.
@@jacmaxwell8836 It stays in the car with me! lol. Solo camping! I also have my awning so I could move it under my awning during rain and set it on my table. The cord probably wont reach >_< so I'll need an extension but I guess that's how i would do it if i had to run the whole double matress in there!
Before I follow your lead, I’m curious, what’s the added weight of your fully-laden rig? How much weight does this drawer system add? And, what did you do first to address the limits of your payload rating? As far as I understand, the highest payload rating on a 3gen is 1,810lbs... but it looks like you’ve loaded quite a bit more than that, even before accounting for passengers. I’m sure you took this into consideration, I’m simply interested in hearing your strategy to work around that rating. Perhaps this is a discussion for a future video?
I’d say it’s 300-400lb max loaded so no where near the limit you specified. I can still carry and move the cargo in the back so it’s no where above 500. The roof rack is maybe another 50lb and solar panel 20. I got a few hundred pounds to go ;). Maybe my added bumpers and winch is getting me closer but I don’t think so yet.
Another great video thanks for sharing. I’m trying to do something similar with my GX. I’m probably just gonna go with two sliding drawers though. So if you use different brand slides for the locking and non locking, (so I can have one lock on each drawer like you), there shouldnt be any problems as long as they are the same length correct?
Love it!!! I just subscribed, have the plans come out yet? Also, I am wondering if there has been any sagging with the fridge? It would seem that the two drawer system would be better support, but I love the one drawer option. Very thorough video! Thanks
How much flex or bounce do you get in the center of the tailgate side of that 3/4" plywood for the top slide? I'm thinking of building a platform with a few inch space beneath the platform drawers for flat item storage, like an axe or the second row sleeper pieces. And I'm worried about it splitting under weight when hopping in or out.
That’s very nice are you compact well planned out that’s awesome! I’m trying to get something like that set up for mine, did you think about putting the portion that is behind the seats of building it into the seats and then having it like you don’t have a platform that swings out when you roll the seeds up I was thinking about that so you could have like full platform above the seats and then when you fold the seats down obviously the whole section rolls down and then you have a a partition that pops into place that covers the gap and then you could have both of the seat sections closed off anyway I don’t have a workshop someone have to come up with this on my own somehow anyway very nice definitely would like something like that for my forerunner and I also like to eat phö ha ha anyway very nice I’ll stay in tune!
My apologies, I speak with Bluetooth and Siri and the words are not what I meant; What I meant to say was, if the portion behind the rear seats when they fold up was curved so then when it folded up it had a piece that lift it out of place then you could make the portion behind the seats and then you could make the portion where you put your tables and all of the cookware that you have and then the portion that’s behind the seats would be structured and it wouldn’t need the deep pieces of wood did you put in place that your feet would normally touch against, and then the only thing that would be moved is once the seats are down then there would be some of it’s some thing that a piece of a board that would be put in that gap so then it would be completely flat that’s what I meant to say for that. But I will watch your other video and I’m not sure if you have a blueprint but I need to and I don’t have a shop either but I would like to construct one to put in my forerunner and then maybe more along the lines of what I was thinking anyway excellent videos I really appreciate it and keep up the good work I might have to come down and visit and eat some pho and have you help me with some ideas ha ha!
I wouldn’t do this build and may consider just spending the cash for the fridge slide. I got an updated build I’ll be sharing soon. It’s similar to my old build with a few improvements. Much more utility for me.
I’m having a real hard time finding an actual air mattress with the right length? My 4Runner build only goes like 70 inches max (back of car to the folding seat) which one did you buy?
This is what the 4Runner was always meant to be
yeah! the storage is nice!

Nice. I like my original storage better than this design hehe. The top slider hasn’t been too useful so that’s what I’d change
This the best setup I’ve seen especially incorporating the sleeping platform also. Thanks for the video
No problem!!
Great build. It looks store bought.
