- Me covering "Fly" , my favorite Nick Drake song from Bryter Layter on my Martin 12 string...
PS this is my arrangement of the tune; how it works best for the 12 string guitar and not necessarily the exact way Nick Drake played it.

amazing skills on 12 string guitar i read somewhere Nick Drake technique was so precise at picking notes you have the same ability in these live recordings
12 string guitars have a magical sound but can be so hard to play ive had few in the past and nearly threw them at the wall a couple of times

Absolutely wonderful amy, I read in one of many book about nick drake that played on a 12 string which was John Cale's and nick fell in love with the sound. It is a shame nick was to poor to buy a 12 string himself, I am sure he would have wrote beautiful songs on one. Great version, I think nick would have really liked this. Ian

Vous avez parfaitement raison. Et vous rappellez ce que beaucoup de gens gens oublient, Nick Drake n'était pas seulement un musicien, mais aussi un poète. Très belle interprétation, et si ce n'est pas son morceau le plus compliqué, ce n'est pas le plus simple non plus à la six cordes. Sublime à la 12 cordes !!!

One of my favorite Nick Drake tunes, along with "Northern Sky", "One Of These Things First", and "Place to Be". Sounds awesome Amy!
well, thanks ! The tuning I use here is CGCGCF. I know other people use another open tuning for this tune, I think most play it in BEBEBE. But I found it worked nicely in this tuning and I'm pretty sure I found the tuning on a NIck Drake site on the web, I didn't just come with it. I think Nick Drake varied his tunings from time to time; he was that versatile with the guitar that he could do that.

Supposedly NIck plays it as BEBEBE with capo on 4th fret. I was just finally learning Things Behind The Sun. It's standard tuning
and Capo on 4th, in that case. The chords aren't that hard, in that case, it's getting Nick's impeccable fingerpicking and timing down on the
rhythm end that's really, really hard. I'm using a 12-string exclusively right now, myself.

Let's try this again. I went and listened to Drake's original and I have to admit I prefer this one. The 12 string adds an ethereal quality and your calming vocal suits the song better, IMO.

Thanks Tobias. You inspired me to get back into my Nick Drake covers. I had previously covered many of his tunes on a different YT channel, but all have been removed, so I am re-doing them now, and I thought "Fly" would sound cool on the 12-string.

Truly fantastic. Can you divulge the tuning you are using. I play with different 12 string tunings and this sounds great on 12 string tuned down like that.
After watching this I found the original version and I have to admit, I like this more. Much more.
The 12 string adds a ethereal touch and your more soothing vocal matches the tone better. At least, it does IMO.

Thanks so much Ian! There is a video on here called Nick Drake Demos vol 1 1967-71, inn which he records himself playing a 12-string for Joey! It's a great listen! I have read a lot of material about Nick and how he was so fussy always tuning and re-tuning. He probably loved a 12 string, but it likely would have driven him mad always having to tune and re-tune for all his different open tunings. I know sometimes, it makes me a little crazy!!! haha :)
