in my opinion the Scarecrow is employed. their job is to scare crows. Edit: i would also suggest that the ipad music guy is a freelance worker. not sure if that counts as employed but i feel as though it is worth noting
The old "scientist" that lives in the Observatory is probably a professional contracted by the city. Consider the only way in to the telescope tower is through a tunnel from inside the town walls. It can be considered a municipal annex, and the scientist is paid through funding and grants provided by the city council. That's actually a pretty sweet career to have, as long as the funds keep coming.
Issues I have as a Majora's Mask professor: *The old lady that gets mugged in North Clock Town actually works at the bomb shop, you see her behind the counter on days 2 and 3 *Madame Aroma is stated to be the postmistress by the postman when she receives the express mail from him at the end of Anju/Kafei. The schedule on in the post office also has a message from the mayor stating "The heavens and the wife are watching" *Guru-Guru, or the song of storms guy, works in the Gorman Troupe, as that room in the hotel was booked for the entire troupe *The Happy Mask Salesman live in Hyrule, he's the same character as in OoT, not a Termanian counterpart *The toilet hand was completely skipped over, he likely doesn't pay taxes but should be mentioned *Shiro, or the invisible guard in Ikana, wears the same outfit as Clock Town's guards, meaning it's likely he is part of the force *Romani Ranch could be considered a territory of Clock Town since Cremia delivers milk and some government body must recognize the ranch. This means Cremia, the dog race lady, the cuccoo guy, and possibly the Gorman brothers MAY be considered Clock Town citizens To summarize: 2 characters not listed as employed, 1 character wrongly labeled employed, 2 characters wrongly labeled unemployed, 6 characters TBD
I would argue that all peoples in the Romani Ranch area are not to be counted among Clock Town citizens, as there are no guards stationed out there. Furthermore, what of Anju? He may inhabit the body of a child, but mentally he is an adult and presumably had a job before Skull Kid made him into a child. I would argue he is unemployed. Also, the Goron in the bomb shop should either count as employed or as a non-resident, as he sells goods imported from the Big Goron in Goron City
I remember shiro, but like the goron guy who becomes the mask(haven't played in a few years 😂), wasn't shiro dead, so wouldn't count? And if not, wouldn't he be dishonorably discharged as I think he went to secretly and live and... spy on the not-gerudos lol
@@thejonbrownshow8470 Shiro wasn't dead, just unnoticeable. You solve his problem with a potion, not the Song of Healing, and he's perfectly visible afterwards. The Stone Mask is just a mask, probably a cursed one, it doesn't contain his spirit like the Deku, Goron, or Zora Masks. As for being discharged, that would only apply to MM3D, he's in Ikana in the original, likely as extra security since the area past him is currently ghosted up
I think "nonprofit work" is a good descriptor for the Great Fairy's duties. She evidently keeps the area safe and orderly in some way, because the Skull Kid goes out of his way to destroy all 5 Great Fairies in his mission to cause chaos. She doesn't accept monetary compensation but that doesn't make her work any less important to the community
@silvers5350 you would think taking a non physical space 99.9% of the time not using resources and protecting the state of the world for no fee or compensation and being a godly proxy would make her an exemption she's doing way more than everyone else.
I suppose you also consider the women in Zelda II who invite Link into their homes and "heal" him as technically employed as well. lol I'm just kidding. I kind of agree with that characterization.
The goron selling the powder keg requires you to have a permit, so I would say that he would probably be running an actual business rather than as a "drug-dealer" type scenario, making him employed. Basically, I feel like he is too strict on who he sells a powder keg to, and also I believe he only lets you carry 1 at once (I think some form of law?), to be considered a drug-dealer.
The Goron selling the powder keg is 100% employed. He is sharing the business space with the main bomb shop and is unaffiliated with that business. He's just renting one corner of the space, like how barber shops often have one or two chairs that they rent out to freelancers instead of employing them themselves.
Not to mention that the bomb shop owner probably wouldn't allow him to use his shop if he was doing anything shady. Though ultimately I would say that he probably shouldn't count since his business is likely an extension of the large powder keg selling Goron in Goron Village.
@@davisbowe8668 This. He's basically a licensed distributor of Medigoron's Powder Kegs that is renting a space in a closely related business. I do think he counts as a Clock Town seller, though. He sells them specifically *in* Clock Town, after all, and I don't *think* it's implied that he's some sort of traveling merchant. He's essentially running a shop-stall for Medigoron.
The Goron I say is employed, but most likely a contactor as the powder keg business posesses a liscense while the bomb shop does not. Good chance he could be travelling from Goron city to work rather than living in clocktown. Also being a contracted vendor for the bombshop, rather than being employed by the bombshop directly, I'd say he doesn't count as a resident in clocktown.
Your channel has perfectly encapsulated the feeling of beating a game and then just screwing around because you have nothing left to do. I love it, keep it up!
@@rmeltzer47 Def agreed, especially with stuff like construction. I barely know a hammer from a screwdriver, so I got mad respect for construction workers. Also, manual labour usually means having to endure a tonne of physical pain - especially given how businesses overwork their employees. Just take people in retail. Most people couldn't endure that amount of physical pain unless their livelihood depended on it.
@@rmeltzer47 It's a skill, but the difference is that unskilled labor can be learned on the job, rather than needing a qualification to get the job in the first place. If you called it something else to remove the stigma then for labor statistics purposes it would still need to be differentiated from jobs like, for example, lawyers and engineers.
Having worked a season as a census enumerator this series feels so spot on to my experience with sometimes having to make increasingly esoteric calls on how to report. Especially for hostile or uncooperative people or locations. I’d love to see more of these. Given how the unemployment in Ul’dah in FFXIV is a major plot point in the story I’d get a huge kick out of knowing the real number.
I feel like assuming shady things about a Goron present in a legal body, and doubling down on the idea there are NO Gorons living legally within Clock Town's walls is a little bit of systemic racism.
Observing that a dime will buy you ten cents worth of product and a quarter will buy you twenty-five cents worth of product does not make you racist. It makes you a sentient individual who is able to experience external stimuli without ignoring facts even if those facts make you super duper sad.
There were a lot of phrases in here I never thought I'd hear but "therefore he pays taxes as part of the municipality of Clock Town" has to be my favorite.
You were quick to call Kafei unemployed, but he's considered missing. I'm sure before he was turned into a child he held a stable job to pay for his wedding with Anju, and would still be considered employed until a certain amount of time has passed since he's gone missing (he's been missing for a month). It could also be questioned whether a missing person still counts as employable to begin with
True! But if you, as the person measuring the unemployment rate, are aware of his existence, that means he is no longer lost, he's still in clock town, and he's not employed at the moment, even if he could be when he turns back to an adult.
@@roryschussler to an enumerator who is just judging based off of physical survey without speaking to the person in question, you would see kafei, the mayor's son who went missing, and the child who wears a mask and presumably lives inside the back of the curiosity shop, is a child and therefore unable to work. and if the enumerator knew that these two people are, in fact, the same person, then kafei would still be ineligible to work as he is in the body of a child. he is not applicable as is the rest of the clock town child population.
Considering you can find actual money literally cutting the grass (not being paid to do it, finding literal denominations of currency just cutting the grass) the economy in the zelda universe is completely out of whack.
I’ve been thinking about moving into Clock Town recently and getting away from the hustle and bustle of Castle Town worries me because I’ve been worried about employment opportunities in the area but your video has shown me there’s still hope to find something and I thank you!
Personally I live by the Bay so I don't know how the main cities' job opportunities are. I'm already visiting Clock Town regularly for errands, but I have been planning on visiting Castle Town at some point to see if it's as good as people make it to be. But I wish you luck with employment at Clock Town. -signed, a hardcore Zelda fan
I don’t think Kafé or the scarecrow should count as unemployed as neither are able bodied. Kafé is currently trapped in the body of a child. While the scarecrow doesn’t count as a sentient creature. Being more of a construct than a member of a race like a Zora or Goron. The scarecrow also seems to be completely immobile. Making them not able bodied. IF you consider them a citizen of clocktown. If videos like these continue I’d like to see a data sheet on the final verdict of everyone. So we are able to argue over the semantics of the verdict over a character’s employment status. Also great video! I really enjoyed this one!
Scarecrow can and should make a living working from home. For someone who enjoys producing and dancing to music, surely he could start up a Twitch stream.
@@loulou3676 Sorry, I’m not American so correct me if I’m wrong, but would the scarecrow count as a citizen? Would they have the required paperwork or access to the required resources to start a business, and file for self employment? As far as I can tell the Scarecrow isn’t applicable to the unemployment rate with these factors in place. If the scarecrow were to put effort into these factors they probably could have a successful stay at home business. Just wondering if in their current state in the game if they would be applicable to the unemployment rate.
@@timmynook Very true, it is definitely confusing territory. Either way, I think that if the scarecrow was willing to work, he could easily work for the shop as a greeter or something like that. lol
I have never combined the words "employment" with "Majora's Mask", EVER in my existence. And to be honest, I think out of the 7 billion people on planet Earth, and some billion in outer space, this is the first time this concept has been thought of. Pretty dope
@@dontmisunderstand6041 not really, they probably stream our shit in their ufos. Their streaming services are super high end I've heard. Scientific purposes
As an econ major I came in SO ready to "um ackshually" you with the correct definition of unemployment since most people get it wrong, but you totally nailed it! The only things I can um ackshually are: 1. Some construction workers are skilled workers while others are considered unskilled. The Foreman for instance is considered skilled whereas the guy moving wood around is probably unskilled. 2. "Desk women" = receptionist.... bruh 3. The Mayor's Wife is not the First Lady as she is not married to the President or Prime Minister of Termina. However it is unlikely she is seeking outside employment so she still wouldn't be considered unemployed. 4. There are actually a lot of people formally employed in the cannabis industry due to it being legal in much of the US, including the most populated state California. Legal status of Powder Keg sales in Termina does not seem to be specified in game. 5. The bigotry of the Curiosity Shop owner is apparent if you talk to him as a Deku, he refuses to do business with you. Actually quite a few residents of Clock Town are blatantly discriminatory against Dekus, perhaps another avenue of research Hyrule Castle town employment rate would be interesting to watch *MAJOR EDIT: So I'm replaying MM right now and just got to the Powder Keg part. I redact my claims regarding its legality. The Powder Keg literally requires a _permit_ to purchase, that you obtain by demonstrating proper usage. Thus it is a regulated firearm that is definitely legal to purchase. You cannot buy the Powder Keg in Clock Town without this permit either so that shop is legitimate too. The Powder Keg can also only be sold to Gorons, but to be fair only Gorons have the physical strength to wield it properly. It could be argued that this is a reasonable form of discrimination, akin to how you can't participate in the Paralympics if you are able bodied, or even to how it's legal for filmmakers to only hire beautiful people as actors and actresses.
I had no idea normal unemployment was so low. 5% is the highest rate in a US city? I thought we had like 80% unemployment in ghettos. Plus this is an oldtimey fantasy land so you'd expect most households to be single-income.. do homemakers count as unemployed? But actually, the only complete family we see (the carpenter boss - hotel front desk lady family) has two incomes PLUS the older daughter working, probably all to support grandma and the layabout son with the mohawk.
@@KairuHakubi Homemakers (people who spend their day on raising children, cooking, cleaning, maintaining the household) are not considered unemployed. It is actually an interesting issue in economics because the actions they perform are definitely "work" (as seen by the fact that we pay people to do the same actions outside of the household eg restaurant chefs, daycare teachers etc) but since they don't receive a wage for their labor, they are not considered "employed", nor is their work factored into stuff like the GDP. They along with many elderly/retired people, some people with disabilities, etc would be in the category of "not seeking employment".
As much as I appreciate skybox appreciation and enjoy looking at things I've never looked at, I really love these types of videos that aren't part of a series and instead involve you analyzing the details of games in ways people haven't thought about before. Thanks for continuing to try new things; every one of your videos makes me really happy
In defence of song of storms guy he’s coordinating the troupe’s music, which if he does not work for the troupe themselves then he must work for the city in coordinating the event. Even if his job is rather unglamorous it still implies that he’s employed by the mayor or is at least a subcontractor. The troupe could be a local entertainment company too, rather than a travelling one. Kinda like broadway which operates from the broadway theatre
"She's basically a glorified frog" Something about the delivery and the contempt in your tone just had me laughing so hard. I nearly choked on my lunch
3:45 Whoah, dude! Uncalled for! I'll have you know that being magically severed into tens of smaller pieces is a serious problem affecting thousands everyday and the Great Fairy of Clock Town deserves our full love and support in these trying times.
@@starmangalaxy2001 It was very generous of the enumerator to take time out of his day in order to aid her in her predicament, but to then insult her? Now that's unprofessional.
being magically severed into tens of smaller pieces is a serious problem in mexico if there's any cartels around. maybe termina is actually just an allegory for mexico
She's definitely not unemployed. She's a magical diety. You wouldn't say God is unemployed. Or like a wood nymph. At worst they'd be like a religious figure, also not unemployed. The fairy does not participate in the economy at all and so shouldn't be counted as she is neither a consumer nor tax payer
i think if you count the guy running the bomb shop, you should count the goron selling powder kegs. it is a specialty import explosive, which he has to bring as part of his business (and/or create them). both work in the same building
everybody talks about the glorified frog line but nobody talks about the line where he asks about how is the survey was conducted within 6 days when the moon is going to crash into the world in 3
This video is SO nostalgic. It reminds me of the hours I spent in Twilight Princess looking at every detail and wandering aimlessly. Nowadays, I struggle to find that feeling.
As far as I can tell Clergy are considered employed, so I think the Great Fairy would count as Employed since she acts as a healer and a place of worship. Although I'm not sure how we'd count actual Gods or Mythical beings in a census.
tbh it's kinda prostitution. "healing" services have been coded that way in the past in other zelda games, such as zelda 2 where a woman invites link into her home to "heal him". However she's not charging for her services, and as a result is arguably unemployed or out of the labor force. So the question really is about whether she counts as a "person". And to that I say she is a *fairy* not a *god.* While her residence may be a place of worship, she is not working, she is not paid, and she is not a deity.
The only places in the game that are specifically labelled as being places of worship - the temples - are completely absent of Great Fairies, as you can only find her lost pieces that were presumably scattered in the temple for nefarious reasons. So I agree that the Great Fairy Fountain in Clock Town should NOT count as a place of worship. I think unemployed is a fair designation, mostly because it works for the joke.
You mentioned the old lady but forgot to bring her up when you were in the bomb shop. In the notebook, the description says she runs the town bomb shop. You forgot the Keaton in the north district. If you wear the Keaton mask and cut all the bushes before they disappear, it shows itself and quizzes you. You get a prize if you win. You also forgot the hand in the toilet of the inn at night. Kafei is an adult engaged to Anju who was turned into a child by the skull kid. Tingle's father lives in the swamp and Tingle travels all around, so he probably doesn't count.
@@wyssmaster But that's a really strong hand! And I think if sentient plants can be counted, then a magical gameshow fox could at least be considered even if it (they?) has different locations like Tingle.
@@Mollumbus I agree that he is from town, but I didn't mention him because he is 1. invisible to everyone without a lens of truth (how would you work with this guy?) and 2. unable to actually do any jobs without medicine. Is he still getting paid despite not being at his post for a very long time? Who knows. We can only speculate.
Thank you for your presentation. If the moon doesn’t fall, I’d love to see you at the city council meeting. The school board is very concerned about the amount of truancy evident in town & we’d love to hear your thoughts
You've earned my subscription with this series. I love the deadpan delivery, really sells the dead-inside auror character. And the summery at the end is actually engrossing to listen to, makes the places you auror like real places and not map geometry made by a developer. In fact, this series could be really interesting to see how much attention to detail the devs put into the world by giving people jobs and stuff. Keep up the good work! Kudos!
@@randomname285 He literally refers to himself as a travelling mask salesman, there's no way he's foolish enough to do that. He would get audited so fast.
@@any_austin What about doing something equal/similar for different franchises? I'd kill to have something like this for Paper Mario 64... but, there's quite a lot to work with over there.
I want to start by saying I love your videos, but the mask salesman is a traveling salesmen so he doesn't live in clock town so he should be treated like the Gorman troupe. and the observatory man has to be some kind of qualified astronomer likely employed by the state so I'd count him as employed or at least retired. He was probably the first to spot the moon's descent, he's providing a public good
The bomb shop goron only sells powder kegs to gorons that have a "license" to buy them, which is issued in the Snowhead region. And it's clear the Bomb shop owner also has a legally installed area for the goron to do his work. So safe to say he is, in fact employed.
Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game so this was incredibly neat to me. Only thing I really have to add is that while Guru-Guru (the organ grinder in the inn/laundry pool) states that he was *previously* part of an animal troupe, he is currently part of Gorman's Troupe (the one that the jugglers and dancers are with), so he would be employed but not counted as part of Clock Town.
This was awesome. Definitely want to see more Bureau of Labor Statistics joblessness reports for other video game municipalities. Recommendation: Wind Waker's Windfall Island!
@@StefveoX right. Always one dude saying something is unique and different when... not really. Like this channel is creative don't get me wrong but... others are just as creative. Just not on the subject of Zelda videos (mostly)
This is an absolutely amazing video. Though I do have some concerns, questions, and rebuttals. The astronomer could both be argued to have a job (being a scientist), and also be retired due to old age, rather than be unemployed. You also forgot about the hand in the toilet, who seems like he's unemployed, but perhaps he performs a service of butt wiping? Likewise I think it's *very* important to discuss the Romani Ranch, who absolutely *are* contributors to Clock Town's economy and provide a very important function of providing milk (and other food items) to the town, and should be included in the census as a result. Do we exclude farmers from our census simply because they live outside of the urbanized city? Or do you consider this a trade partner? Another point of contention is Tingle. Yes, tingle may have a job, but he does not *live* in clock town. He has no property, no residence. Clock town is merely a place he does business. His actual home is with his father in the swamp, which you excluded from your census. Conversely I'd argue in *favor* of the local ~~weed~~ powder keg dealer. If tingle, a wandering merchant, is included, then why not our goron friend? The deku scrub obviously counts because his deed is very explicitly for clock town land. Either way, great video. I loved every second of it.
Very interesting, cool and informative video. :) I did a very similar project some years ago. The thread is called "Counting the Population of Termina" on Zelda Universe. Here are the differences in our definitions, counting and calculations I noticed: *South Clock Town* - counted poster-yelling-guy as employed because I assumed he's also a carpenter - counted his parents (didn't know where in Clock Town to put them) as unemployed (though maybe I have to rethink that) - didn't count the Happy Masks Salesman because I assume he is otherworldly and doesn't live in Termina *North Clock Town* - just as you I counted the bombers as unemployed, but unlike you I added them to my calculation, because they still consume resources in an economic system while adding nothing of value to it (their "helping people"-shtick is literally childsplay for me. Doesn't count as a service!) - counted the Great Fairy as employed because "healing people" for me was enough of a service - I guess this is debatable - while Tingle is definitively employed, I did put him in the Southern Swamps because I assume he lives with his father and just travels to the other regions of Termina *East Clock Town* - disagree with Honey & Darling; I counted them both as employed because they both are capable of running the shop alone and serving customers - counted ??? as unemployed (- Madame Aroma caveat: I did count her as a politician running some of Clock Towns internal affairs like the Carnival Commitee or the postal-service [she gives orders to the postman] - so of course employed) *West Clock Town* - didn't count the Scarecrow (unemployed) towards Clock Town for some reason - might have to change that now that I'm thinking about it - did count Medigoron's apprentice as employed; reasons: 1) him selling stuff still adds value to the economic system of Clock Town - I guess this is my definition here, and yours differs slightly in being more official 2) I think a Goron might permanently be stationed in Clock Town, just like the Deku Scrub *Stragglers* - Guru-Guru (Song of Storms guy) is part of the Gorman Performance Troupe, therefore he is employed - still doesn't count towards Clock Town, as you rightfully point out - counted Shikashi as a Professor or Scientist, therefore as employed - I guess this is debatable, though That gives us an unemployment-rate of *11/49 ≈ 22.45%*
This is literally one of the best things I've watched in a long time regarding video games as someone who spent almost 6 years in school for Urban Planning, it'd be great content to see you put video game cities into context with IRL ideals like this. No idea what games to suggest next, but fallout games would be a pretty easy one, although the nuclear apocalypse isn't exactly a great help in the realm of employment numbers.
Before watching the video: I've been waiting so long for this video! Can't wait to watch it!! Its such a cool concept and maybe you should do it for every Zelda game where its possible to calculate! Edit after watching the video: I think you forgot the toilet hand and the grandma which gets robbed / works in the bomb shop. But I loved every single second of your video. It is so much fun watching these and I actually can't get enough from your videos. A lot of love and applause to you my friend! + Bonus Fact at the back of the wheelchair from grandma is a tiger, you should check it out its crazy!
I love what your channels has turned into so much. Just talking about and reading into stuff in video games that no one has thought about but when you do think about it it becomes really interesting. Keep this stuff up I really love it
You forgot one citizen! You need to add "???" a.k.a. the toilet hand to the list of unemployed. We can assume he is looking for a job since IIRC he wanted paper to write his resume. Yes.
I love this video but you can't just say the Great Fairy is unemployed. Tatl says upon first arrival into Clock Town: Link is cursed to be a Deku Scrub and the Great Fairy is your first point given for how to potentially fix you. Of course, we know that doesn't work out, but it implies the Great Fairy is known for somebody you can come to if you are in need of perhaps a solution to an ailment you have. Though the point must be considered that this only comes from Tatl, who is herself a fairy, so maybe that's like recommending your cousin Frank to help fix your car. Also consider that somebody who lives within Clock Town must be using its resources in some way; food, shelter, consumer goods, and so on. An employed person would be giving back to the community and the economy as a way to make up for what they consume. What need does the Great Fairy take up? She doesn't need food, her home is protected by her own brand of magic, she just stays in her fountain and doesn't take from the community. In fact I would say she gives more to the community by simple fact that if you're injured, she'll heal you FOR FREE. I argue: Great Fairy should either count as employed or shouldn't count at all.
The ending bit reminds me of that newspaper in Half life alyx that has an economy section talking about how a historic bubble has bursted due to the extra dimensional invasions from the combine and Xen
@@any_austin that is true the population is really small even though the flood happened at least a few hundred years ago. Which is really weird now that I think about it why are they so few people?
Just wanted to drop a comment that I greatly appreciate this channel, perhaps even more so than I appreciate skyboxes. This video is another masterpiece. Love the deadpan delivery while sneakily creating one the most original gaming content around. Keep it up my dude.
The Great Fairy is providing the town Health care. However I don't know if I would go as far to say it's state sanctioned Healthcare, as far as we know the Great Fairy doesn't get paid for her services. Unless you count bringing a Stray Fairy back as payment. However if the town is paying to upkeep her cave entrance and the pathway, then perhaps that counts as her compensation for providing free health care to Clock Town. Or maybe it's entirely of on a voluntary basis and she is just providing free healthcare out of the goodness of her heart
- Song of Storms guy (Guru-Guru) is part of the troupe with the dancers, so if they are employed - so is he. He might also be on some kind of disability benefit after Link broke his brain in OoT. - I think it's likely that both Honey and Darling own the shop. They take turns explaining the games to Link and she says "it looks like WE have a customer". I adore these 'looking at beloved games in unique ways' videos and would like you to do a lot more of it. I had an idea to suggest to you for a video but forgot it.
On the Song of Storms guy again - he WROTE the tune (or Link did, paradox etc etc), so he is doing a lot more than the iPad guy at a dance recital. At worst, he is employed but has plagiarised a child for financial gain
I don't think you should count the guests staying at the hotel because they are most likely tourists and not citizens of clock town. If they were they wouldn't be staying in a hotel.
The old lady isn't a guest, she's the mother of Anju, who owns the inn. The other people there were part of the troupe who he ended up excluding from the census. Really it's only the musician guy who's debatable as to whether he's a clock town resident.
You can live in a cheap hotel. Depending on how much it costs it'll save you lots of money. Rent, light bills, water bills and wi-fi. and don't forget some hotels give you free breakfast and lunch(at least at the ones I stayed at)it'll probably be garbage but food is food as long as it's edible. And in Japan people basically live in manga/internet Cafe's which is basically as big as your average bathroom Wi-fi can be slow as hell tho with so many people and computers. so the guests staying at the hotel could just be really really poor or want to save cash.
I'm 99% sure that every entertainer (except maybe the jugglers) all come in the same group to work during the festival. If the jugglers are not on tour then they are probably the Clock Town equivalent of buskers or resident artists. Oh 7:58 he doesn't mention the music box guy tho, still not sure if he's connected since he does complain about something by the laundry pool.
13:28 At first i was thinking Kafei is a child and therefore shouldn't be counted, however LEGALLY he would be considered an adult. He could potentially register his curse as a disability if he wasn't in hiding, however I'm not sure how that would affect the eligibility criteria for the Bureau.
@@charliesmith1462 if you try to use anything but the sword to stop him, yeah. Hit him with an arrow and the bombs in the sack explode, utterly obliterating him. You don't get the bomb mask, and he doesn't show up in Ikana.
If i remember correctly tingle doesn't live in clock town. He lives in the swamp with his father. So it should be 32 able bodied persons instead of 33. ALTHOUGH, you forgot to count the old lady that is employed at the bomb shop so the numbers cancel out.
there's confusion because Clock Town appears to be a highly nonresidential town, largely business, so tons of people work there and presumably don't live there. and Tinkle flies to various places on his balloon, so he's got a very busy job but yeah no telling where he actually sleeps, if he ever does.
I'd argue that Tingle technically moved out of the swamp as his father clearly hasn't seen him in quite some time. Not to say Tingle automatically lives in Clock Town of course
I love the economy of this town. The one bank in town operates out of a hole in the wall, while half the town's retail tenancies are taken up by carnival sideshows
I like the pen clicks each time you mark someone down haha Also you missed the Bomb Shop Lady who only appears in the bomb shop after you save her on the night of the first day.
For April Fool’s Day or smth I’d love to see a vid where the Enumerator just goes rogue, stops using the “employed in the eyes of the state” test, and collects data solely based off of gut feeling + prejudice, for better or for worse. Let him cut loose a lil!
This was so, so, so funny and entertaining. I would watch a million of these. We're on the same page about the part-time worker, he's the best character in the game
you truly are the king of making videos I never knew I'd want to watch. My only complaint is that there's 6 children, 5 play hide n seek and 1 guards the hideout.
Love your channel dude. I recently came across your videos and binged the hell out of the Eggbusters series and love your style. Looking forward to new videos!
Oh my God I literally got excited when you said "why don't you just say they" at around 2:36. I get so annoyed when people say "he or she" when "they" is both more efficient and more inclusive
Great video, as always! Just a few notes from me: 1. The jugglers, twin dancers and Guru-Guru (Song of Storms guy) are all part of Gorman's Troupe. Gorman being the guy sitting in the Milk Bar. You mentioned removing all of them from the pool but you still included Guru-Guru at the end, who should also be removed then as well. 2. I don't think you included the mother of the Bomb Shop Guy who I believe is employed as the owner of the bomb shop. She is the same lady who gets robbed by Sakon in North Clock Town. 3. Would the Keaton in North Clock Town count? It's clearly intelligent and you can speak to it. I feel like if the Great Fairy counts, the Keaton should count. 3. How'd you miss toilet guy? They are very unemployed
oh that's right! she wasn't leaving town to go home from shopping at the bomb shop, she was leaving to sell bombs elsewhere. There's a lot of sweet little family businesses in Clock Town aren't there? Ki-tan is a youkai, they fit into the same category as hippiefairies and hobos. Barter is carried out, but no true business.

And since the moon is falling from the sky, he probably is under a lot of pressure to solve the problem.
The old guy is a professor. He definitely is employeed.
agreed!
Dude needs spend more time keeping the skulltulas out of his pathway, though.
@@h8GW That isn't his job.
Issues I have as a Majora's Mask professor:
*The old lady that gets mugged in North Clock Town actually works at the bomb shop, you see her behind the counter on days 2 and 3
*Madame Aroma is stated to be the postmistress by the postman when she receives the express mail from him at the end of Anju/Kafei. The schedule on in the post office also has a message from the mayor stating "The heavens and the wife are watching"
*Guru-Guru, or the song of storms guy, works in the Gorman Troupe, as that room in the hotel was booked for the entire troupe
*The Happy Mask Salesman live in Hyrule, he's the same character as in OoT, not a Termanian counterpart
*The toilet hand was completely skipped over, he likely doesn't pay taxes but should be mentioned
*Shiro, or the invisible guard in Ikana, wears the same outfit as Clock Town's guards, meaning it's likely he is part of the force
*Romani Ranch could be considered a territory of Clock Town since Cremia delivers milk and some government body must recognize the ranch. This means Cremia, the dog race lady, the cuccoo guy, and possibly the Gorman brothers MAY be considered Clock Town citizens
To summarize: 2 characters not listed as employed, 1 character wrongly labeled employed, 2 characters wrongly labeled unemployed, 6 characters TBD
It’s so queer, too, that so few people have mentioned the Guru-Guru ordeal.
Agree for most of them EXCEPT for the romani ranch, I'd also add that the guy yelling at the poster is so obviously a construction worker
She works none profit the way that a celestial guardian being works non profit.
I feel she also might qualify as a religious authority, which would be a job
@silvers5350 you would think taking a non physical space 99.9% of the time not using resources and protecting the state of the world for no fee or compensation and being a godly proxy would make her an exemption she's doing way more than everyone else.
I suppose you also consider the women in Zelda II who invite Link into their homes and "heal" him as technically employed as well. lol
I'm just kidding. I kind of agree with that characterization.
@@WilliamHBartSure, prostitution is a job
I'd say he's the only authorised vendor at that store, being the only employee physically capable of holding a license to handle them.

You went to apocalyptic areas?
I feel like assuming shady things about a Goron present in a legal body, and doubling down on the idea there are NO Gorons living legally within Clock Town's walls is a little bit of systemic racism.
And then he called that curiosity shop owner racist, making him a hypocrite as well!
@@nixel1324 maybe the census taker digs that though and him and the racist shop keeper are besties
Systemic racism in the legend of Zelda is a big issue.
@@nixel1324 The curiosity shop owner is racist tho. Try talking to him as a goron, zora, or deku

How high could Hyrule's Castle Town's (TP) unemployment rate be? And BotW's towns after Calamity
@@tsuki3752 Fair. But I think -an adult in the body of a child- is probably a situation that census regulations have not yet had to deal with.

@@loulou3676 Sorry, I’m not American so correct me if I’m wrong, but would the scarecrow count as a citizen? Would they have the required paperwork or access to the required resources to start a business, and file for self employment?

Just wondering if in their current state in the game if they would be applicable to the unemployment rate.

The amount of effort put into the employment situation summary... I love this so much
As an econ major I came in SO ready to "um ackshually" you with the correct definition of unemployment since most people get it wrong, but you totally nailed it!
The only things I can um ackshually are:
1. Some construction workers are skilled workers while others are considered unskilled. The Foreman for instance is considered skilled whereas the guy moving wood around is probably unskilled.
2. "Desk women" = receptionist.... bruh
Actually quite a few residents of Clock Town are blatantly discriminatory against Dekus, perhaps another avenue of research
Hyrule Castle town employment rate would be interesting to watch
*MAJOR EDIT: So I'm replaying MM right now and just got to the Powder Keg part.
I would add that the astronomer is employed considering he introduces himself as a professor of Astronomy (Professor Shikashi).

Hey you're verified now cool

@@jacobg14 oh for sure I agree with that

16:51 There's a really obvious answer to how they conducted a six-day survey in only three days... They played the Inverted Song of Time.
The Termina Government will not indulge information on this subject as it is considered highly classified.

I did a very similar project some years ago.
The thread is called "Counting the Population of Termina" on Zelda Universe.
Here are the differences in our definitions, counting and calculations I noticed:
*South Clock Town*
- counted poster-yelling-guy as employed because I assumed he's also a carpenter
- counted his parents (didn't know where in Clock Town to put them) as unemployed (though maybe I have to rethink that)
- didn't count the Happy Masks Salesman because I assume he is otherworldly and doesn't live in Termina
*North Clock Town*
- just as you I counted the bombers as unemployed, but unlike you I added them to my calculation, because they still consume resources in an economic system while adding nothing of value to it (their "helping people"-shtick is literally childsplay for me. Doesn't count as a service!)
- counted the Great Fairy as employed because "healing people" for me was enough of a service - I guess this is debatable
- while Tingle is definitively employed, I did put him in the Southern Swamps because I assume he lives with his father and just travels to the other regions of Termina
*East Clock Town*
- disagree with Honey & Darling; I counted them both as employed because they both are capable of running the shop alone and serving customers
- counted ??? as unemployed
(- Madame Aroma caveat: I did count her as a politician running some of Clock Towns internal affairs like the Carnival Commitee or the postal-service [she gives orders to the postman] - so of course employed)
*West Clock Town*
- didn't count the Scarecrow (unemployed) towards Clock Town for some reason - might have to change that now that I'm thinking about it
- did count Medigoron's apprentice as employed; reasons:
1) him selling stuff still adds value to the economic system of Clock Town - I guess this is my definition here, and yours differs slightly in being more official
2) I think a Goron might permanently be stationed in Clock Town, just like the Deku Scrub
*Stragglers*
- Guru-Guru (Song of Storms guy) is part of the Gorman Performance Troupe, therefore he is employed - still doesn't count towards Clock Town, as you rightfully point out
- counted Shikashi as a Professor or Scientist, therefore as employed - I guess this is debatable, though
That gives us an unemployment-rate of *11/49 ≈ 22.45%*
This is literally one of the best things I've watched in a long time regarding video games as someone who spent almost 6 years in school for Urban Planning, it'd be great content to see you put video game cities into context with IRL ideals like this.
I think he missed Anju's mother too.
I did earnestly forget about toilet hand guy but I maintain that the lady who got robbed doesn’t count.
@@any_austin toilet hand guy is very likely a ghost. doesn't count.
Of course toilet hand is employed, they're always chasing that paper.
@@any_austin Why wouldn't the old lady count? Her son is the bomb shop owner and she was making a delivery to his shop.
Your videos continue to be the definition of "didn't know I needed this in my life" - absolutely stellar stuff!
This is exactly the type of content I hunger for. Please make more like this along with unremarkable and odd places. ❤️ New favorite TH-camr
Very very good! I really like that you actually write up a report that your viewers can actually read! Fantastic work!
Finally, what I've been waiting for, thank you Austin for your survey taking skills and reporting
I love what your channels has turned into so much. Just talking about and reading into stuff in video games that no one has thought about but when you do think about it it becomes really interesting. Keep this stuff up I really love it
"she's basically a glorified frog" oh my goddesses dude you can't just say that
i glorify frogs without beinh asked
Especially since the frog who lives in Clock Town is part of a professional choir.
As a frog person myself, I am mortified! 😱
But really, amazing work, Austin! 😁👍
Absolutely love that you settled on “desk women”
Seeing the Great Fairy and the Observatory Old Man with a red “Unemployed” banner slapped on their face never ceases to make me laugh 😂
Thanks I appreciate the update on Clocktown's economic situation.
You forgot one citizen! You need to add "???" a.k.a. the toilet hand to the list of unemployed. We can assume he is looking for a job since IIRC he wanted paper to write his resume. Yes.
Nah disability he fell and couldn't get up or out of the toilet
Wouldn't she need to be looking for a job as well to be considered unemployed? I would agree that she does not count.
The Great Fairy _clearly_ has emeritus status at this point.
...Either that or she's a registered NGO.
We can say it. Unemployment doesn't mean a person has no purpose. Amen. If the great fairy is unemployed, I say more power to her.
Thank you for including the menacing wiggle at 11:39
The ending bit reminds me of that newspaper in Half life alyx that has an economy section talking about how a historic bubble has bursted due to the extra dimensional invasions from the combine and Xen
This was really good. You're asking the questions nobody would have ever thought to ask. I would absolutely love to see this done at windfall Island
Great idea. It’d be fun to do one for the entirety of Wind Walker’s world, given that it’s sort of post-apocalyptic.
@@any_austin that is true the population is really small even though the flood happened at least a few hundred years ago. Which is really weird now that I think about it why are they so few people?
@@dissonanceparadiddle Not enough arable land and the sea is nearly fishless. Ruthless population control.
Thank you for investigating these matters of public interest. You help keep the phony politicians in this country honest ✊😤
"She's basically a glorified frog" greatest sentence i've heard this week
Well now I’m expecting the unemployment rate of the entire game for an upcoming video 👀
Imagine if breath of the wild 2 had a clock town. I’d be so happy.
The podium really brings this to the next level. Please keep embracing the absurdity it gives me life
ive watched this video so many times and i just now noticed the memoria plug
10/10, almost moved to Clock Town but changed my mind after this video 👍🏻
13:28 At first i was thinking Kafei is a child and therefore shouldn't be counted, however LEGALLY he would be considered an adult.
He could potentially register his curse as a disability if he wasn't in hiding, however I'm not sure how that would affect the eligibility criteria for the Bureau.
I can't believe how entertaining I found this despite how mundane the topic. Amazing.
C’mon, astronomer is a job. And the old lady works at the bomb shop, she was bringing back a shipment of big bomb bags.
Don’t forget that one guy stuck in the toilet…
She’s not employed she’s just doing a favor for her boy
And the astronomer isn’t employed formally and he’s drunk all the time and he’s old
But what about the old lady from the bomb shop? Should we count her along with her son? The thief clearly isn't employed though..possibly
The thief lives in ikana valley tho so he wouldnt count anyway
Also he's potentially dead because the kid doing the survey accidentally blew him up by trying to intervine in his robbery of a sweet old lady.
@@keiyakins HE DIES?????
@@charliesmith1462 if you try to use anything but the sword to stop him, yeah. Hit him with an arrow and the bombs in the sack explode, utterly obliterating him. You don't get the bomb mask, and he doesn't show up in Ikana.
@@keiyakins bro holy fuck 😭😭😭 LMFAO thank you for explaining,I had no idea
This is my favourite video you’ve ever done. So entertaining lmaooo I loved this so much
12:10 Any Austin's Termina counterpart. He's just about ready to leave that goofy shop to pursue making videos and funky jams full-time.
The comedic timing of the pen clicks absolutely broke me.
I like the pen clicks each time you mark someone down haha
Also you missed the Bomb Shop Lady who only appears in the bomb shop after you save her on the night of the first day.
For April Fool’s Day or smth I’d love to see a vid where the Enumerator just goes rogue, stops using the “employed in the eyes of the state” test, and collects data solely based off of gut feeling + prejudice, for better or for worse. Let him cut loose a lil!
Back here today. In my mind, I’m always hanging out in Clock Town
This was so, so, so funny and entertaining. I would watch a million of these. We're on the same page about the part-time worker, he's the best character in the game
you truly are the king of making videos I never knew I'd want to watch.
My only complaint is that there's 6 children, 5 play hide n seek and 1 guards the hideout.
guarding the hideout is a job
@@Scribblersys child labor laws not in effect my apologies

These are pure art. Thank you for producing them.
In love with this series. Big subbed.
wake up babe new any austin vid
Love your channel dude. I recently came across your videos and binged the hell out of the Eggbusters series and love your style. Looking forward to new videos!
i was on powder kegs real bad for a few years. lost a few limbs from that addiction. really blew my life up and also a few department stores, rip
Thanks for your published findings. Very educational and I will be sure to spread awareness!
Oh my God I literally got excited when you said "why don't you just say they" at around 2:36. I get so annoyed when people say "he or she" when "they" is both more efficient and more inclusive
Great video, as always! Just a few notes from me:
Guru Guru isn’t employed by the troop he’s a groupie
oh that's right! she wasn't leaving town to go home from shopping at the bomb shop, she was leaving to sell bombs elsewhere. There's a lot of sweet little family businesses in Clock Town aren't there?
Ki-tan is a youkai, they fit into the same category as hippiefairies and hobos. Barter is carried out, but no true business.
@@any_austin except he clearly is, do you really think they just rely on a groupie to provide the music for Jura and Rosa's dance routine?
