Japan has made a U-turn in its foreign policy. Surprisingly, and despite the fact that the People's Republic of China is the largest client of the Japanese economy, Tokyo seems to have set itself the goal of strengthening the country's ties with Taiwan.

Japan was required to renounce all territory outside of the main island which include okinawa as term of surrender in WWII including the return of Taiwan to China. japan does not have soverighty over okinawa, it has regain administrative control as transfer by the US occupational force (since the US did not annex okinawa, US cannot actually transfer soverighty back to Japan). this is in opposite mirror to China relation with taiwan where China has soverighty over taiwan but no administrative control over it.
Japan already recognise taiwan belong to China. if they were going to oppose China, they would have recognise Taiwan as a country already. it is a done deal. all this pretending is just wishful thinking, especially with the new prime minister being friendlier to china the previous PM, japan's defence ministry will continue to puff on the issue, but they don't make the policy, the PM does.

@@didiermontagnier6114 The one in Arizona is only going to have a fraction of the wafer capacity of TSMC's multiple leading edge fabs in Taiwan. Its also going to be a 5nm fab that goes into operation in 2024 which while great will be a node or 2 behind what TSMC will have in Taiwan in 2024 (2 or 3 nm). One (of multiple) reasons TSMC aren't building cutting edge fabs in foreign countries is its alot easier for trade secrets leaking out, as in any industry a competitor (eg Intel) will have an easier time poaching competitions employees (eg TSMC Arizona employees) if they speak the same language and are in the same country as its easier for someone to uproot themselves and move to another state/province. This lack of language barrier has made it easier for Chinas SMIC to poach hundreds of TSMC employees since they speak the same language, although they only got so far because of all the sanctions on semiconductor equipment with US tech (eg ASML EUV tech while from a Dutch company it contains US tech and has US operations (eg laser maker Cymer)
I think the factory that makes TSMCs machines is in Europe. Manufacturing capacity should be back within two years.
What's very interesting is Japan declaring Taiwan's defense to be critical to Japanese security opens up Japan to protect Taiwan under the current self defense act and also guarantees US defense of Taiwan as US is mandated by law to provide defense for Japan as part of the elimination of Japan's standing army.
Friendly reminder regarding the US providing protection for Japan, those protection only valid if Japan is staying inside its corners just liked a little 🐕 , I just came back from Kuril Islands, Loves all the military upgrades that the Russians have done on the Islands.
How can a Japanese opened their mouth about protection of a foreign land while their country is been Occupied?
I think what's also interesting is the fact that China will be in a must-win situation if they attack Taiwan because the entire cost they will take on will come from the global response of them starting a war. Why would they do it, if not to win? Now understanding that point, they also have nukes.... Nobody is fighting a nuclear war for Taiwan, I know that for sure... Taiwan loses no matter what, China prefers to keep Taiwan intact but will not lose a war to keep it intact if they already started one.

@@yesyes1842 Welcome to Cold War II. The term you're going to want to brush up on is "brinksmanship". It's a dangerous game that both sides have to play and the US is not just going to give up the opening round without a fight.
Having US soldiers killed by China is a situation the US must respond to and China knows this. All the US has to do is imbed troops in Taiwan and the question of "is Taiwan worth a nuclear war?" gets flipped back to China. And as it turns out, the US has already sent some over.
@Jon B I disagree with your assessment. If China nukes Taiwan with American troops inside Taiwan, you believe USA will have no choice but to respond. I believe US values the lives of Americans too much. No war US has ever fought involves their own territory and their own citizen's lives. American soldiers may die fighting and we seen them die in foreign territory but American citizens within USA do not get hurt in warfare. Fighting a nuclear war will change that when both sides can strike each other's country. US is not committing to a conventional war in the past 70 years and we're suppose to believe a nuclear war that risk millions of american lives over the island of Taiwan will happen for sure?
At the end of the day countries all put their own self interest first. If China nukes Taiwan. Taiwan loses everything and China will be public enemy #1 and the world will isolate them. At that point is the best hand for USA to play to nuke China or to just work with the world to make sure China pays maximum price without suffering nuclear attacks? I can't understand what Taiwan DPP is doing, they stand to suffer the biggest loss amongst this love triangle if things really go bad.

You have a Chinese surname, but I am getting the strong impression you have never stepped foot on Taiwan!! China-Japan history is quite different from Taiwan-Japan history. Also very different from Korea-Japan history. I grew up in Taiwan - many Taiwanese felt the Japanese treated them much better than the KMT when they arrived in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese feel closer and warmer to Japan than to China. Having the mainland constantly threatening with missiles and military airplanes doesn't leave Taiwanese feeling very Chinese. The people increasingly feel they are Taiwanese and not Chinese.

@@Funica11 Korean Peninsula is vital for the security of Japan. Japan fought wars with China and Russia over Korea. Today South Korea protects Japan from North Korea (and China and Russia by extension), and serves as a buffer zone for Japan. Although South Korea is very "bitchy", Japan has to tolerate it as much as possible. Japan would be in serious trouble if South Korea falls into the wrong hand.

When I was in the US Navy Section B24 or some section also made sure that a US Navy ship would sail the Formosa Straights at specific intervals decided upon by Taiwan and the USA. The Formosa Straights is the body of water between mainland China and Taiwan. I know because it was my duty to serve on a US Navy vessel which had that duty station. I also had the opportunity to visit Taiwan and it is a beautiful country, I spent time in Kaohsiung City, Tai Pei (the capital) , and also Keelung. I have very fond memories of the country and its people were kind and generous to us.
And that is why we must defend the Democratic independent Taiwan. It’s the right fight if there ever was one. Plus we all hate China so it’s two birds with 1 stone, save Taiwan and bring China’s ego down a notch.

It's normal for them to pick hitchhiker foreigners and take them where they want to go. It was the manner, their was no inconvenience just being really helpful. Made me realise what an asshole of a cousin I am when my relatives came from Taiwan. They would of took me everywhere. In the west i think we get caught up with commercialism & competitiveness which makes us being self centered. Marketing has us believe to feel valuable is to buy something for "yourself". IN theory the US would respond to any nuclear attack against japan, in reality that may be a good question. Regardless, the Japanese currently use weapons grade fuel rods in its nuclear power plans, it would be a trivial matter to create nuclear weapons if given enough time. A surprise first strike against japan may be viable, but I suspect in that case the US would respond and respond big time. The Soviets, back in the 1980's, considered any country with nuclear weapons as totally safe from nuclear attack, but any countries with no nuclear weapons as a viable target. I suspect the Chinese have the same attitude, so its unlikely nuclear weapons will be used.
@@Minerva3 The US hasn't risked its own neck in war for over 150 years. And as soon as they incur any significant losses they pull out - and their idea of 'significant' is laughable. Afghans lost around 300,000 people and kept fighting, the US left after a couple thousand. The Vietnamese lost over 3 million and kept fighting, the US panicked over 50k losses. America fights wars because it never has to face the consequences. If it ever feels the slightest prick, it flees.

Japan and Taiwan are the only two East Asian countries that do not share the Sinocentrism (a culture in which relations are based on their country at the top of the region) like China and South Korea. In the past, we both experienced the era of imperialism that enveloped the world and had a dark history, it is very gratifying to be able to look at history objectively and share friendship.
Aside from the private level, an independent country would have no choice but to confront the CCP, which falsifies both its territory and modern history for the sake of national interests.

There were numerous revolts in Taiwan during Japanese colonialism, and I would argue that Manchuria was much more developed than Taiwan and Japan itself… but yes, Taiwanese has much fonder memories than the other Japanese colonies due to the modernization and self-identity brought about by Japanese Colonialism.

@@covfefe7706 There is tension over territorial claims, but I think they'd put their minor squabbles aside if China became more belligerent. Politically, they are natural allies as they are both threatened by the same powerful, authoritarian regimes.
And, yes I agree that there is lingering resentment in Korea due to Japanese abuses. On the other hand, the close of WW2 brought that to an end. Of those who lived through the war, few remain.

One has to remember that when Japan gave Formosa back to China in 1945, they gave it to the Republic of China, not the "People's" Republic of China, which didn't exist yet. Taiwan never "broke away" from mainland China either. That dispute is the result of a civil war that's been on hiatus since 1949. Basically, when the CCP resumed the civil war (the Chinese "Communist Revolution") after WWII concluded, they forced the Kuomintang government and nationalist forces to fall back several times, until they fled the mainland to Formosa, which would later be called Taiwan, and where the Kuomintang is still one of the island's democratic parties to this day. Taiwan still calls itself the Republic of China, because that's what they always have been, and they'd very much like to have their mainland back from those CCP usurpers one day. That might be a wet-dream at this point, given the disparity in military strength, but anybody who says that Taiwan is a "rebel" or "breakaway" province, is either misinformed, or lying.

Not only Taiwan has not "always" been ROC, but nobody in Taiwan cares about "recovering the Mainland" because they never had it. Chinese inmigrants leaving to Taiwan on centuries XVII to XIX were abandoning China for good, breaking Ming and Qing laws by doing so. After 1949, the newly arrived KMT tried to brainwash the Taiwanese population to become nationalist soldiers that would "recover the Mainland" for Chiang Kai Shek, and until there wasn't freedom of speech in the 90s, Taiwanese had to pretend they cared about China or otherwise be murdered. Nowadays, for most Taiwanese the KMT claims are just old people's stories, they see themselves as an independent small country called ROC or Taiwan, that just wants to be left alone.

As an Australian who's visited both Taiwan and China, they couldn't be more different. Taiwan was clean, modern with fantastic infrastructure, the people were beyond friendly and helpful. I can't wait to visit Taiwan again. My experience in China was unfortunately very sour. The air was awfully bad and the people were rude and pushy. I support Taiwan and Japan.

Check the surveys - only about 5% of the public are in favor of declaring independence as soon as possible. Why? Sure a lot of them are not fond of China, but they know the cost of war. They can't retreat to safety like America can (and did again just recently). They have to stay and deal with the mess, unlike America. Americans are more in favor of Taiwanese independence than the Taiwanese themselves simply because America knows nothing about the horrors of war and never has to deal with the consequences of its actions, leaving that for the local population to sort through.

China's move in on autonomous or Simi autonomous territories has Taiwan and Taiwanese companies scared and diversifying their geographical presence. Partly as a defense against a Chinese takeover or blockade, and partly as a way to more easily defect off the island if needed.

However, Taiwan is still under its own government (Republic of China, ROC) control since 25th Oct. 1945 when Japan surrendered WWII. We have our own government system, military troops, and a very healthy economic body. Though, Taiwan has been isolated from the world since its withdrawal from UN 25th Oct. 1971 for almost 50 years. During the isolation period, it becomes a modernized, democracy, and freedom country. A strong fortress against CCP under their continuous economic, and military threats. The most important thing, Taiwan holds the traditional value of Chinese cultures like a shining light house, giving hopes to all oversea Chinese. Supporting Taiwan means supporting Noble humanity, Democracy, Liberty, and true worldwide cooperation in many areas.
I think *that* is the central question surrounding the rivalry between People's Republic of China and Taiwan, Republic of China. *Who will inherit custody of Chinese culture and civilization for future generations?*

Japan has invested heavily into Taiwan, Okinawa and Korea before and after WWII One became a part of Japan a few decades after WWII. Japan tried their best to support Korea before and after WWII, but Korea's anti Japanese education diminished any chance of amicable friendship. Taiwan has always been democratic and acknowledged the mutual respect. Japan in return helped Taiwan economically. Unfortunately, Japan had also helped China economically after WWII. Go figure.

Many countries has invested into China including Japan and US. Their economy is deeply coupled with each other. Trump tried to decouple Wall Street and China, and he was ousted. So Chinese economy must be decoupled before anything can happen.
With the debacles of real estate in China, the decoupling may gain more speed.

I find it ironic that the CCPs own actions have pushed Japan to this, especially with respect to the proposed build-out of new military facilities in the East China Sea region. Assuming Japan follows through on that, it would be a major thorn in China's side if they are thinking about invading Taiwan in the future, as it would be a serious threat to their eastern flank, able to give missile air defense to a good portion of the island, provide logistics and staging to assist the island, and potentially coordinate with the US on helping Taiwan bloody any attacking force. And the CCP has no one but themselves to thank for pushing the Japanese to do this. :p As with many things in China, the wounds are self-inflicted by their wonderful CCP government.
