    Forgive me if you’ve already thought this through, but I think the efficiency of the Tesla turbine is at it’s most efficient only when spinning at very high RPMs. When the turbine is connected to the Lilly impeller via a very normal gear reduction, the viscosity of the water may be preventing the Tesla turbine from reaching it’s peak usable energy output. To compensate for this, you could possibly use a much more dramatic gear reduction, and some form of a clutch to allow the turbine to reach efficiency before translating that energy into impeller motion. But dang, 1700 comments! You probably won’t even see this. Thanks for the fun video :)

    • @manoknisanpedro7431
      @manoknisanpedro7431 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will it not waste energy for that matter? Cause I think if it the turbine reaches its maximum rpm then translate it into a almost at rest impaler would it not put stress on the turbine it self or maybe the gears if he will use gears?
      Sorry I'm just curious😁

    • @SecretionOrb
      @SecretionOrb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Manok Ni San Pedro There are certainly energy losses any time you convert energy, so I would imagine he would want to do that gear reduction in as few steps as possible. I’m not an engineer or anything, just an enthusiast, so I couldn’t tell you what the losses would be in this case.
      But it also seems like this project may have been more about combining two very unique inventions than it was about getting an efficient device.

    So, im a jet boat mechanic. I work with impellers all the time and what I can tell you is that would work a lot better by having the impeller inboard, drawing water from the bottom of the boat and then expelling it from a nozzle out the back. You would probably achieve at least 5x as much thrust.

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This. 100% this!
      MUCH more so than propellers, impellers in particular HEAVILY rely on being enclosed in some kind of housing/channel to help direct/feed new fluid into & the resulting jet of fluid out of them. This DRAMATICALLY increases their ability to drop the pressure of, aka "suck in" said fluid, & thus provide "thrust".
      But if the fins are going to be completely openly exposed to the surrounding fluid (aka no housing/channel), then a propeller will be far, FAR more useful/effective as a pump/means of propulsion than an impeller.

    Some improvements you could make (so its not slower than glue):
    1: Give it a bigger prop (more area=more thrust per speed).
    2: Give it a gearbox for more torque.
    3: Move some of the bottles out of the water (less resistance to thrust and turning).
    4: Move the rudder to the center.

    • @nathanielbrown8438

      Yeah what he did isn’t an impeller. Probably better to research what an actual impeller is first since he had the definition and design wrong

    • @csorrows
      @csorrows 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, that would not work. If he had the impeller facing the right direction (he is using it backward) then it would be pulling water from the sides and pushing it out the back acting as a true impeller. Putting this in a tube would restrict the water from entering the sides. Also, jet boats use a turbine, not an impeller.

    Awesome video, as usual!
    A balloon in the bottle would keep the pressure up while air is exiting.
    That bottle flying and crash should have been followed by a cat angrily saying "reeeeaaaaaaaaaaaawwwrrrrr"!
    EDITED: The impeller was originally tested in a tube. Perhaps more thrust would be generated if the impeller was surrounded by a tube. Note: my original statement of the cavitation was wrong, since no bubbles were generated by the boat when it was moving.

      this was my first thought too, the ultra high rpm seems undesirable without reduction gearing and a larger pushing surface to exploit that increased torque.

    • @nocare
      @nocare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deadeyeduncan5022 I think the flaw is not over complicating. Its bad customer interfacing.
      Yes many many engineers forget about KISS, but its also drilled into you to keep things as simple as possible. I find it much more likely that engineers fail in getting customers to have realistic goals that meet their needs.
      There is another often forgotten trap, just because something works doesn't mean it works well enough. Complexity can add functionality, improve efficiency, add safety.
      A complex system needs to be respected though.
      The real trap is not using the correct tool for the job and giving insufficient time to engineering it correctly.
      TL;DR if the goal can be accomplished simply then do it simply. However do not avoid complexity just because it is complex. Use it to achieve a goal the best way possible.

    I think you may find this interesting, the concept of which the tesla turbine works is also the reason the boat could pick up speed. The bottles resting on the water create a drag and the boat/driving force has to compensate for this. * try the boat again, but with only the Hull of the boat in or touching the water *

    FYI, you can easily snap up to 4mm threaded rod by simply holding it with two pairs of pliers or similar grasping devices. Mark the place you want it broken, place one pair of grips on the line then grasp with the second pair about 2mm away from the first, this allows waggle room and bend the rod back and forth. When it breaks it leaves a thread that is relatively undamaged and does not need to be filed, unless you get a thread spur but you only need to grasp it and waggle for it to break off.

You can also use integza bot to control the throttle to keep the flywheel topped up with power via the valve. You can use your torque meter for sensing when to add to air for the flywheel. Besides encasing the impeller to get a better flow efficiency i would definitely use a reduction from your turbine to the impeller, as a prop/impeller turning too fast in water will only cavitate and produce nearly no thrust. Also, it is very possible that the turbine has speed but not much torque, then the reduction will allow to increase the efficiency of your system.

  • @cptcrazyfingers9639

    I think the velocity of the air is the important variable when driving the Tesla turbine. Velocity tells a lot about boundary layer characteristics because it plays the largest role in calculating kinetic energy. I think the reason the straight nozzle worked best is because it didn’t effect the velocity of the air going into it. The other nozzles ended in diverging sections which act to reduce the velocity of the fluid and increase the pressure. Actually, a converging nozzle should work better because velocity of the fluid increases as the area of the inlet decreases.
