A documentary on Ernst Happel would be amazing. His life, oh man, oh man. And his achievements as a manager are unique in the annals of the game. Rest in peace.

Good call! one of the greatest managers ever!
He was also, it should be noted an excellent player as well, being considered one of Austria's greatest ever players alongside Sindelar, Hanappi, Pezzey , Prohaska and Krankl.
A documentary on his life would be very revealing and would help to shed light on his tactical innovations as a coach.

The real question is, though: who smoked more cigarettes in the Final - Happel or Menotti? I reckon Menotti, but it must have been close.

If I had a time machine to travel back in time, I would go back to the year 1978, exactly at the time of the World Cup championship in Argentina... I think that the 1978 tournament is the best and most beautiful tournament held so far... A lot of talk and doubts are raised whenever Argentina wins an important tournament!!! I do not know why !!! Argentina won many tournaments, but the 1978 World Cup was the most important.... I loved the matches of this tournament and considered that it was the highest level of competition, and no team deserved the tournament like the Argentine team deserved it.... You are the best, and this video contains a great analysis of what happened in the 1978 World Cup... I don’t know why you don’t have more followers???!!!

The 1978 WC was a manipulated tournament where the Argentine team were above FIFA. It is one of the worst FIFA WC's ever. It should never have been held in Argentina with that government in place

good post. Actually the fix was in earlier as it was important for Argentina that Peru lost against Poland, so that Poland would have something to play for against Brazil. Velasquez claimed that the manager Calderon made a series of strange substitutions against Argentina and that the training camp had been visited frequently by a press circus including Pele and Ramon Mifflin working for US television, and that these intrusions had unsettled key players. It is also speculated that the two players Velasquez alluided to were Chumpitaz and Cubillas, two legends of Peruvian football.Without any question Rodolfo Manzo was deeply implicated and the jury is out on Chumpitaz and Cubillas.
Anti-semitism reared it's ungly head when Argentina protested about the proposed referee for the final, Abraham Klein, an israeli citizen and he was shamefully replaced by FIFA with the Italian Sergio Gonella.

  • @raymcgrath4116

Good point about Alonso, in fact Menotti gave him very little time on the field!!! It could be said that his second half introduction against Hungary changed the course of the match, injecting much needed guile into the midfield.
There were many strange decisions by Menotti during the tournament, his persistence in deploying Bertoni who was often on the edge of a meltdown!!! The lack of minutes for Houseman was a scandal and plunged him into depression. I suspect that Menotti’s under utilisation of Alonso was his way of spiting the Junta as its common knowledge that “Beto” was never his preferred choice for the squad.
In the end Argentina triumphed and it may be best not too ask to many questions as to the manner that this was achieved.
This was a tragic period in modern Argentine history and no one comes out of this with reputations intact.

The painstaking effort put into the detailed analysis is commendable.

Thank you Renk that was a very fair minded and detailed look at a most controversial World Cup. I happen to be of the view that the Argentina team won on merit and that not only did they win but they won with a certain flair and verve that distinguished them from all other teams in that tournament. I would describe the 1978 selección as a near great football team and Mario Kempes as the defining star of that World Cup.

It’s a forgotten and lost fact that Peru had nothing to play for against Argentina. When a team has nothing to play for, players levels drop and of course the manager will make changes to give other players game time and substitutions. Argentina deserved the win, played with attacking flair, and scored the most goals, end of debate imo 🤷🏻‍♂️

What is also often overlooked is the manner in which Boca Juniors and their players were excluded from the 1978 World Cup, the club were denied grants to undertake refurbishments to their stadium and their players who were the current South American club champions had no representation in Menotti's squad. It would seem that the club's history of being aligned with Peronism did them no favours in this respect. When Menotti announced his final squad of 22, the focus was on the exclusion of Maradona and the absence of Boca players was lost in the controversy. Velez Sarsfield and others however received generous grants for refurbishments through a system that was not at all transparent.

    • @raymcgrath4116
      @raymcgrath4116 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Let's not forget that Diego was already the captain of Argentinos Juniors by that time, we have to imagine that this was one of the most notorious periods in Argentine football history! he was the acknowledged leader by the age of 17, the idea that he was unproven doesn't stand scrutiny.
I have often wondered what were actually the real reasons that he was not selected.
According to Osvaldo Ardiles, the majority of the players in the squad were genuinely shocked when he was left out!
Menotti's justification when confronted by the press was always a litany of lame excuses. Indeed General Suarez Mason, a prominent supporter of Argentinos Juniors in this period broke ranks and described the decision as "imcomprehensible!"
      This is merely historical fact.

@@Spectrescup I did mention the grain shipment that was sent to Peru a month after the tournament, definetly suspicious, but collaborations between the military juntas was not unheard off
Like I said at the end of the video, I won't blame anyone who thinks the World Cup was rigged, the military junta had the power to do so, if you believe it was rigged the grain shipment will be part of your evidence, if you think it wasn't rigged the shipment will be just a coincidence, its a matter of perspective
At the end of the day, what I saw on the pitch did not seem fixed or scripted, but that's my perception and I accept different opinions

FIFA and Argentina had a bad relationship from the get-go. Argentina sought in vain to host the World Cup for years and were finally (allegedly and unofficially?) promised the 1962 World Cup, only for it to go to Chile, not a footballing power, who had mediocre stadiums. Chile won 32 votes to Argentina's 10. 14 members abstained from voting. Then in 1966, Argentina got shafted by referees, as did Uruguay in their matches against England. Argentina were given the 1978 World Cup in 1966, but then amazingly failed to qualify in 1970, allowing Peru to shine, then performed poorly in 1974. Peru won the 1975 Copa, they were a very good side, Cubillas was an amazing player, but in 1978, Argentina had a great side, they were so tough, so skilful: Passarella, Ardilles, Luque and of course, Kempes were amazing world-class players. Peru have never been a physical side and Argentina are masters of that style. Was the match rigged? Possibly. But Argentina were, one way or another, destined to win that World Cup. Which Dutch player was it who said,
_"My feeling in extra time was that if we won that match, we wouldn't get out of the stadium alive."_
I think it was Johnny Rep.
