Thanks for providing this 1978 World Cup preview programme. Again a very good panel and great insights from Keegan and Cruyff into top players. Once more one can feel that sense of excitement and anticipation before a big tournament.

I’m the same age. It was the summer before I started secondary school. It was the first World Cup I was able to follow fully. Had the sticker album, Shoot magazine coverage and everything. I think most people had acquired colour TV sets by then so it was their first colour World Cup.

Because he was a no nonsense Englishman up against bunch of stuffy scared Englishmen, the F.A. You're right, he should have got the job, instead they went for easily controllable and safe option of Ron Greenwood and then Bobby Robson. Nothing against those two, but Clough would have been better. Us English wanted him, the F.A. were scared of him.

Cruyff used to go to the Barcelona youth training ground, take a five minute look at a certain player, then say to the coach something like "move him to center mid" or "move him to the wing." More than one pro got their start that way.

1978 World Cup Preview - Action Argentina 0602am 8.8.23 slower game? watching football these days that bit of waffle has turned out to be a curse, young man. watching england try to create a base from which to launch an attack is tedious. and i mean tedious. we have seen the same formation launch these slothful excuses for precision and poise take the same lacklustre stance against any opposition you could care to mention since the days of ron greenwood... it's that bad!! and now the women's game - once a style all it's own... has now taken on the same boring lacklustre docile goonish style the men's game has clownishy clung to for all they're worth. we want fast paced and entertaining football. watching folk run into spaceto then see their teammates adhere to a flat back formation is as tiresome as listening to clough's hackneyed point of view... we might as well look out the window at those flashing lights they're so eager to flash into one's front room as a poor man's entertainment scenario... wtf!!! get on with it win something ffs!!! is about al needs be said. as i should think they know how to play football by now.... sod text book football...

I remember watching this pre-World Cup episode. Argentina had probably the best opening ceremony of all World Cups and the best goals scored in any World Cup tournament. Cruyff didn’t actually go to Argentina because his home had been raided by burglars whilst he was away and he had death threats the year before which affected him and his family. Regards hosting the World Cup in Argentina, those who didn’t want it hosting there were right, it was proved corrupt and the Argentina Government were killing its own citizens.

    Football is a strange game.
England's national team during the 1970's was packed with accomplished, experienced and skillful footballers and missed out on qualification for two world cups. The 1980's England team was run of the mill and played the hoof-it -high style and yet only Argentina and Maradona and "the hand of God" stopped England from reaching a World Cup Final in 1986.

I disagree on England in the 80's. They had good set-up and some very skillful and solid players. With Hoddle marshalling the midfield, the players passed the ball around, looking to do overlaps against the opposition. And some of the performances were very good

If only the great Kevin Keegan could have played against or with Roberto Dinamite. The Brazilian number 20 in the 1978 World Cup was Brazil’s best player in that World Cup. Zico’s World Cup would be 1982 where he shone like a star. There is a saying in Brazil that if Roberto was in Serginho’s place in 1982 the outcome of that World Cul could have been different.

No chance. Your poor defence and goal keeper were bad. Brazil weren't an actual team more individuals. The midfield was world class. Although people forget that Antognoni had a valid goal not given and the game should have finished 4-2 in 1982 to better team Italy. Also Brazil were fortunate in 78 game against Italy as the Italians hit four posts and should have scored. Result would of have been different if not for those posts.

@@imnhtp2006 What Holland really needed was somebody in the middle snapping up goals. They struggled at times because they played with three wingers - Rep, Rene van der Kerkhof and Rensenbrink. Given a real centre-forward like Ruud Geels, Holland would have been transformed. He was also excellent in the air and would have played havoc with Argentina's central defence, but he declined to go to Argentina apparently because of political reasons.

1978 World Cup Preview - Action Argentina 0632am 8.8.23 sepp mayer? one of the few who could catch a ball - refer to nowadays keepers who seem to have taken on the American style of keeping wherein the goalie isn't deemed a player in his own right, merely some sap who can punch or block ball with his hands as opposed to dictating the play in the box or making sure his defenders are abreast of the situation when on the defensive. not good, is it?

Half an hour of this 'documentary' wasted on the question of Scotland's chances of actually winning the World Cup. Fortunately they were the only British team to qualify, otherwise this would have taken 3 hours. That's the problem of British teams at World Cups or European Championships. They always overestimated their abilities and put too much pressure on the players. Nobody outside Britain would expect Scotland to become World Champions. They were on a level with Peru and Iran, so getting out of that group would be a success. But of course they're 'expected to beat Peru' (they lost 1:3) and Iran (1:1).

Considering that there was a military dictatorship ruling in Argentina from 1976 to 1983, during which time it committed all kinds of human rights abuses, it is an absolute disgrace that FIFA allowed the World Cup to be staged there.
