I'm currently playing this game with this exact yarn and I'm about to give up and just use it as a variegated yarn. Yarn chicken is exactly what I've thought of
If anybody had told (still knitting) me a year ago that I would sit here watching a 45-minute crochet video, I would have laughed in their face. I don't know how you make these so entertaining, but dammit, I am so entertained!!
When you said "that hurts me" after reading how they make the granny square. I felt that in my soul. I prefer tight looking granny squares so I usually go down a size in hook size AND i like chaining 2 and starting with a magic circle. Ive managed to make it work fortunately. They sell this at jo anns now.
I feel like they should have added like 4 more inches to the last color. Just to accommodate for weaving in the end. I find myself having to go down a hook size in order to have enough of that color to weave in.
I ended up using a 6.5mm hook & made my own pattern up to make the yarn work. I also used a magic circle & never chained 6 to start the row. I also used the stacked single crochet.
@@paohger Try going a hook size down or use tighter tension when you see that you're running out of color. It just takes a lot of patience, frogging, and practice. You got this!
Hey, I hope you are well. I keep you aware that the same thing is still happening to me but instead of the third color now it’s the last one, but I’m not very worried because I have a lot of white yarn so I can tie there with that color. But I thank you very much for your help again and blessings for you and yours!
This looked really stressful lol..for me I'd rather just stick with separate skeins, but I'd still buy this yarn for just making multicoloured projects, the colors look fun👌🏽

I'm so sorry for your loss! It's super common to lose interest in hobbies when you are going through such a hard time but getting back into it is a very good sign of healing ❤❤️❤️
Your tension obviously relaxes as you speed along, since the the purple row, so you probably should have sized down a hook at that point on the first square. I think this yarn would be great for beginners using the exact pattern given and learning to control their tension and be consistent. It gives a great visual reference for whether they're being consistent. You're not used to having to follow a granny in a way that you don't normally do plus you magic circle start so it may not be a yarn you'll enjoy. (Just finished watching so wanted to say I'm so glad you kept at it! I agree, it makes very pretty squares and yay no ends except beginning and ending ones! LOL. It does require some inital adjustments but then you can really roll!)
this reminds me of planned pooling, sometimes I would just change my tension of certain stitches to make it work haha, its definitely hard to do, you need like perfect tension throughout to make the colors line up correctly
I had yarn like that. It was a bernat blanket yarn? Made like some kinda plaid print?? Something like you had to do EXACTLY 15 sc for each color change. No more no less or it wouldn't work. Even said to go up or down a hook size if you weren't getting it exactly right. But that was it. Worked up really fast. Super soft. But the colors spotted something fierce. I mean. I got it as a gift and my cat decided it was his so. I can't complain lol but definitely wouldn't buy it unless it was on super sale.
I do crochet granny squares just as they are telling you in the pattern. I just bought the yarn so I will see how it works for me but almost everyone pretty much has trouble with it. Wish me luck 😂. Thanks for your video!

Props to you for staying so patient with figuring that out! This was really interesting to watch, I'm so down for your long format videos 💖 I could listen to you chat all day while I crochet lol
At first I was hating the yarn seeing you struggle in the beginning but at the end it grew on me seeing the mostly white square worked up and hearing you say it definitely got easier the more you went on. I think the scarf idea was cute as well! Loved your video.
It’s amazing how much variation there is for each individual trying to get this yarn to work. I needed to use a 4.5 mm for the center row and then switched to a 5 mm for rounds 2-5. On rounds 4&5 I needed to tighten up my stitches but not so tight that I could go back to a 4.5 mm hook. I made sure that i had 3 inches of the 5 th color to tie off. Each skein gave me 15 blocks. With each block it got easier and I had 30 blocks done in a days time. I hate sewing in ends so this concept is awesome for me and if I can buy it on sale the hassle of tensioning is worth it.
I’m 64 and I am truly enjoying your video. I love the way you do the magic circle. And changing the hook size. So you can teach an old dog new tricks😍🤣
I have been making granny squares since I was ten. Some 50 years ago. I used 5.25 hook and two stiches in corners. Yarn seems thick to me. May just be that I just finished a complicated baby afghan. I really like this yarn. Bought all Joanns had left and ordered some. Fun video!
I'm using a 6mm crochet hook, 2 chains in each corner, no chains between clusters, and I start with a magic circle, leaving a 12 inches tail out in the beginning. Works great for me!
@@daniellebastel1778 I found her review after watching this one. 😊 It's interesting that Kelsie's last two skeins worked out perfectly -- I'm wondering whether some colorways have better calibration (for lack of a better term) than others?
I did it like you, but I had a lot of yarn of each left, so I ended slip stitching until I reached the color change because I refused to frog it on my first try 😂 at the end it wasn’t noticeable for me.
@@dianasturcz5 Im sure OP will get back to you- but what I assume she meant was slip stitching by not yarning over going into the next stich yarn over go out of the stich and pull through the 2 loops on your hook, keep doing this around (im assuming in your double crochet stiches that make up the granny) until you are at the right colour then you slip stich into the nearest gap in the granny sqaure chain 2 (counts as first double crochet) and continue your granny as normal
I think it's amazing how many different ways you can do a granny square. I have only ever done the "classic" granny square so want adventure outside of that ❤
I love the idea of this yarn, I'm not a fan of making granny squares with all the ends and carrying around a million balls of yarn so a bit of fiddling with tension sounds like a great tradeoff to have it all in one ball! Can't wait for some colours to come back in stock so I can try it out, thanks for the review!
Come to think of it, I still have 8 skeins of colour pooling yarn I was convinced I was going to master. After about 3 hours, I was ready to set fire to it. I should have known the granny square yarn would be a no go for me lol. I still have it. I will revisit it again some day when I'm feeling particularly sadistic.
Rewatching this video and want to say how much I love this yarn! I have used a TON of it, and when it showed up at Walmart, I was thrilled! It was cheaper than Joann and anywhere else online, but since then about 2 weeks ago, they clearanced it for $4 a skein and now it’s all gone! 😢. I am sad that it had such a short run. I think too many people didn’t try hard enough at first and gave up on it too soon. Not sure if it is going to be still available at other stores, but all I have near me is Walmart and it’s gone from there.
Thanks for your review! All the other reviews of this yarn only made one square according to the given pattern. Using your pattern on the entire thing is very helpful!
You’ve got the patience of a saint! I would have quit after like 2 times of pulling out and restarting. I haven’t seen anyone yet, follow the instructions on the band and have it come out perfect.
Toni, I thank you so much for this video. I was seriously thinking of trying this yarn. In theory, it seems like a dream idea. No colour changes, or end weaving. But you know what they say about things seeming too good to be true. I love grannies too, but not keen on their pattern at all, and I like picking my own colour scheme. This yarn might be great for some people, but it's just not for me. The biggest turn off would be the constant pulling out rounds to adjust tension. That would seriously get on my nerves. Again, thank you. You saved me money and hassle. Cheers!
This is the only review of this yarn that makes me want to attempt it. I love that we got to experience your entire thought process. We do all crochet differently so no rules needed, just make it work for you. New sub here and I've been binge watching while getting caught up on my own projects. You are a joy to listen to.
Hi Kelsie! Happy 2024. These types of threads work our patience! My stitch tension varies like this when I'm in a hurry or my hands hurt because it ends up loosening during work! I love crocheting squares for blankets and this has happened a lot. Today I do it more slowly and always measuring one from the other.
So….what you’re telling me is that these yarn companies can most certainly leave a tail out and they *choose* to make me dig out a clump of yarn every single time 😂
I feel like this yarn would be great for when/if I teach crochet again My class had issues attaching new colours and also with tension control So this would be helpful for both of those
I gave the yarn a fair shot. Tried the pattern, tried my usual way, changed hook sizes, etc. it would take less time for me to weave in every round than frog every round. I used it in a scrappy project so at least it won’t go to waste. Thanks for the review.
I’m interested to try it, and I’m so glad you showed us your thoughts! I might have to hunt down specific colors, but I think I’m going to try making a couple bags. Excited to see if other brands follow with their own versions!
The crochet crowd has a tutorial on TH-cam for that yarn. You need a 4inch tail when you start. I haven't tried it yet but I think the tutorial should be accurate. Looks like you figured it out. 👍🤗
38 minutes, Kelsie, before I realized that I'm just sitting here watching! 😂 I'm making 39 flower type squares for a sweater for my daughter, and it feels like its taking too long. Thanks for a great video! You are thoroughly enjoying to watch!
I’ve only been crocheting about 7 weeks and just got some of this yarn a few days ago. I paint boots/jackets, so as soon as I finish the custom boots I’m working on, I’m going to try the yarn out!! It’s beautiful too!
I’m new to crochet. I’m watching her crochet and thinking she’s sped up the video because her hands are going so fast….then she starts talking while still crocheting. So unless she’s doing some amazing split screen editing, she’s actually that fast. I’m so impressed.
Thanks for making this video. I've been thinking about buying this yarn, but now I will just stick with weaving in the ends of the different colors it's less stressful.
I haven't tried this yarn, however I agree Red Heart varies in texture unfortunately, when I usually get it, it's pretty scratchy 😭 this idea is pretty cool, but it definitely has a learning curve, it seems.
I was at Joanns today and heard a couple workers talking bout this yarn. From snippets of convo I caught it was clear they were talking bout the yarn. So I went up and said "you have to be talking about the granny square yarn. I saw Kelsie review it." Not only did the worker know exactly who I was talking about she went on about how you have perfect tension and loved your videos. I just thought it was cool that all I said was your first name and it was instant recognition!
Welcome back and Happy New Year!! Yeah so I do not have the patience to frog and retry, frog and retry…and the anxiety…omg the anxiety I would experience!! So, this yarn is a no-go for me. Thanks for testing it out for us!
When I saw this yarn I was really excited but also doubtful of how it would work out. Thanks for making this review, I love that you are very honest too! I will try to get my hands on this yarn in the future for sure.
I enjoyed your review on this yarn and love your enthusiasm. I was also struggling with my gauge. I went as high as a J hook and did not want to go any higher. My square was very loosey. After frogging the square, I started from scratch. I use an H/8 5 mm hook. I use the magic ring/circle, I use the stacked single crochet (Marlybird’s technique). The way I make my squares, (Sara Sach says: do what works for you), I am very happy with this yarn and yes, I will be buying more of it in the future. We each have our preferences to techniques that we use and I think with small adjustments, it does indeed work out in the end. Review well done.
A horrible game of yarn chicken haha. I was also yelling at the screen when you were fighting with the last 2 rows to go back down to the 5.5mm hook. But I also think i wouldn't have the patience like you did, BRAVO and thanks for the fun review ❤
I don’t think I’d use this yarn with the intention of perfect granny squares because I would get frustrated and give up 😭😂 but the colors are beautiful
I actually really like this yarn. I was a little nervous but I’m so happy. It’s like $7.12 at Joann Fabric. I’m thinking I need more lol. I also didn’t even look at the pattern included. I did a ch4 and a sl st then a ch5. No ch in between spaces and ch2 in the corners. And I used a 6mm hook. I had so much fun playing with this!!
the struggle of having the right amount for the first couple rounds and then you keep running out on the last two is VERY relatable. for mine, i've taken to using one hook size for the first three rounds, and then actually going down a size for the last two. you can definitely tell that the last two rounds' DCs are shorter, but... that's the best way that i've made it work for me
Hi! you are the first to go in depth with this yarn! and I really enjoyed your review ! And the fact you completed all the skeins you bought is awesome 😊Thank you! I enjoyed it! BTW Joann is having a great sale on this Red Heart yarn $6.99 and if you have additional discount coupon, bonus! anyways, cheers!🤗
i had the same problem when i tried the yarn, where the first 2 rounds were loose and the rest i had to work a lot tighter tension :/ but this makes me wanna give it a second attempt!
its great for non-granny square projects too. I made a 5 skein throw blanket with the soft white shadow! Planning on doing another with the Cyber Leaf one
I am so glad you made this video! I love making Granny Squares, they are my go to project! Like you, I do not chain one between my clusters, and I only chain one on my corners. I will not make my squares any other way, I prefer the tighter look of the square. I have been wanting to get this yarn, but I am skeptical about the color changes matching up with the way I crochet my squares. Good to know I can probably make it work if I finagle with the yarn. I hate weaving in ends so much so, I usually only use variegated yarn to make my squares look colorful but no actual yarn changes.
Very interesting! I've seen this yarn popping up around and it actually makes me wonder what it would look like used in a project other than a granny square. I might have to try it and yes, it made me want to buy some. I love the blue/pink/black color combo.
Just as an FYI, a guy named mikey from crochet crowd on redheart yarnspirations also gives helpful hints and tips as to how you can make these squares turn out. He actually does a demo for you as well. Hope this adds to the helpful advice. I may try it one of the these days myself. I'll start with one skein...best wishes...😊😊
I’ve used this yarn for 4 projects now. You do have to fudge a little here and there. If you adjust the cluster size to 2dc or 4dc clusters here and there, it is less notable than the colors bleeding together.
For the granny square yarn I found that if I use the 5.5 and then with the excess yarn I slip stitch until I hit the next color. You can't tell and I never have to worry about running out of yarn with the larger hook.
There’s a pattern called Spun Gold, a fingering weight shawl pattern that uses one skein of yarn. It relies primarily on sc and really tall stitches. To keep tension the same on those rows of really tall stitches, I was changing hooks sometimes two or more times within the row. Sure, it was a pain, but it is one of my favorite shawls.
I’m glad the yarn ended up working for you in the end, it seems frustrating and not like an idea that would really work but with practice it turned out ok. At first I was surprised you bought so many skeins I was like “try it first before you spend $60 on yarn!” 😂 but I’m glad you used the rest of the yarn and showed us!
you have so much more patience than I would have, by the 3rd pull and retry I would have just made it into a straight stitch hat or something. they did turn out really pretty though, so maybe I'll give it a second thought if I see it in the store.
I just bought some! It took me 11 tries before I got it to work for me. I used the pattern they provided in the label, and I used a 5.5 with tight tension
This yarn seems like a nonstop game of yarn chicken! 😂
Yeah, takes all the relaxation out of crochet
That is very accurate. 😂

I love this concept yarn ~ once I figured out what worked for me, all the squares came out beautifully 🤗💗🧶💗
The crochet crowd has a tutorial on TH-cam for that yarn. You need a 4inch tail when you start. I haven't tried it yet but I think the tutorial should be accurate. Looks like you figured it out. 👍🤗
Yes, Mikey did a good explanation on what you need to do to get the colours lined up.
I would love to see a blanket made out of all the colorways in this yarn.
Thanks for making this video. I've been thinking about buying this yarn, but now I will just stick with weaving in the ends of the different colors it's less stressful.
I seen alot of people struggle with this yarn but you did it great job ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was hoping you'd talk about this yarn!
I adore this yarn! I bought some yesterday after hunting it down for ages, and I'm going to make a cardigan!!
Love the colorway you tried first. I wanna try it now!
I really like the way that second one turned out. ❤
My cheat is that I put in a chain one in the middle of a few clusters. To gain enough yarn to keep the colors together.
I am so excited to try this yarn! I also watch your videos where you review yarn just to make sure it is Kelsie approved ✅✅
A horrible game of yarn chicken haha. I was also yelling at the screen when you were fighting with the last 2 rows to go back down to the 5.5mm hook. But I also think i wouldn't have the patience like you did, BRAVO and thanks for the fun review ❤
I have been doing the same thing! I would just drop a hook size instead of fighting with the tension.
I don’t think I’d use this yarn with the intention of perfect granny squares because I would get frustrated and give up 😭😂 but the colors are beautiful
Love those colors!! Got used to watch your vlogs while crocheting, you give me motivation, and inspiration😍 thank you for that!!
I had so much fun playing with this!!
the struggle of having the right amount for the first couple rounds and then you keep running out on the last two is VERY relatable. for mine, i've taken to using one hook size for the first three rounds, and then actually going down a size for the last two. you can definitely tell that the last two rounds' DCs are shorter, but... that's the best way that i've made it work for me
I love the white one for a sweater ❤
Hi! you are the first to go in depth with this yarn! and I really enjoyed your review ! And the fact you completed all the skeins you bought is awesome 😊Thank you! I enjoyed it! BTW Joann is having a great sale on this Red Heart yarn $6.99 and if you have additional discount coupon, bonus! anyways, cheers!🤗
Love the soft colors... The one that was one skein!
i had the same problem when i tried the yarn, where the first 2 rounds were loose and the rest i had to work a lot tighter tension :/ but this makes me wanna give it a second attempt!
I was on the fence, but you have made me want to at least try it. Thanks for your videos ! Great job. ❤
as a planned pooler, this yarn seems fantastic to me!
its great for non-granny square projects too. I made a 5 skein throw blanket with the soft white shadow! Planning on doing another with the Cyber Leaf one
I watched another fellow review this yarn and his suggestion was to size up or down your hook in the last row if you needed to stretch or shrink yarn
yass kelsie uploaded guys! 🙌🏼
🤗🤗
I am so glad you made this video! I love making Granny Squares, they are my go to project!
Like you, I do not chain one between my clusters, and I only chain one on my corners. I will not make my squares any other way, I prefer the tighter look of the square.
I have been wanting to get this yarn, but I am skeptical about the color changes matching up with the way I crochet my squares.
Good to know I can probably make it work if I finagle with the yarn.
I hate weaving in ends so much so, I usually only use variegated yarn to make my squares look colorful but no actual yarn changes.
I like doing things my way. When you said that I was 🤔 thinking the same thing, I hate the fake magic ring
I had to go down to a 4.5 for the first 4 rows and a 4 for the last to make it work. I have loose tension though. I did follow their pattern.
Very interesting! I've seen this yarn popping up around and it actually makes me wonder what it would look like used in a project other than a granny square. I might have to try it and yes, it made me want to buy some. I love the blue/pink/black color combo.
I honestly can't wait to try this yarn! I haven't had the extra funds yet, as well as trying to stash bust before I buy new
Thank you very much for giving this yarn a review. You got me curious and I think I will give. 😊
Thank you for another awesome video. Never underestimate your talent. ❤
I am definitely interested in trying it as I usually shy away from granny squares due to all the color changing
Welcome back, I haven't tried this yarn yet, but perhaps in the future. I like the pink one, Can't wait to see what you finally make with all of them.
I like it for any patchwork or color variated projects!
Now I want to try this granny square yarn!!!!
Thank you for this thorough review.
I can't wait for you to get the other colors, they are so pretty
you have so much more patience than I would have, by the 3rd pull and retry I would have just made it into a straight stitch hat or something. they did turn out really pretty though, so maybe I'll give it a second thought if I see it in the store.
I just bought some! It took me 11 tries before I got it to work for me. I used the pattern they provided in the label, and I used a 5.5 with tight tension
I tried Kelsie’s method with a 5.5, and it actually worked out perfectly for me this 3 tries only!
