I think because I've heard esse livro or este livro used all the time and never hear isso livrobeing used because it is wrong. For my English speakers trying to learn Portuguese: What helped me memorize these differences is simply when to add the “T”. Esta/Estas | Este/Estes If you add the “T” it becomes This/Those. So Esse is the masculine word for“That” but if you add the “T” and make it “Este” it becomes the masculine word for “This”

Yes, like Bea said in colloquial speech -- many native speakers don't follow grammar perfectly. I read somewhere that this "error" is so common that "este" is not used that much, esse is used much more frequently. Not sure if that is true -- but saw that somewhere. Recommend Bea's excellent video that she suggested.
