  • Anthony Bourdain and The Balvenie head to New Orleans, the Birthplace of Jazz, to meet legendary saxophone designer, Steve Goodson, who has been creating and restoring brass instruments for the last 40 years. In this episode Anthony is introduced to the incomparable "category five" saxophone. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
    Name of ensemble: The Glen David Andrews Band
    Musicians:
    Glen David Andrews
    Craig Adams
    Dale Black
    Walter Lundy
    James Martin
    Roje Meyers
    Ron Williams
    Additional music by: Henry Youngblood
    The Balvenie’s longstanding alliance with craft is a result of the distillery’s dedication to the five rare crafts of whisky making, which allow them to achieve their distinctive taste and exceptional quality. The Balvenie still grows its own barley, still malts in its own floor maltings, employs a team of coopers to tend its casks, a coppersmith to maintain its stills, and has in its service the most experienced Malt Master in Scotland.

    I bought a saxophone once and was learning to play it. I was returning from a lesson and went into a 7/11 store and thought my saxophone would be safe in it's case in the back seat of my car, as I was only going in for a minute. When I returned to the car, someone had broken a side window and had left another saxophone in the back seat.

    Steve’s saxophones are made in Taiwan. They do make great horns. Some of the best.

  • @eronan03
    @eronan03 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've heard little positive about this guy; essentially that he uses a Taiwanese sax with his choice of pads and mouthpiece.
    This is not to be confused with the true hand-made saxophones like those from Inderbinen.

    • @gcrav
      @gcrav 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eric from Cincinnati You're full of shit. The horns are manufactured to his specifications, not some generic design as you are implying. The Taiwanese are producing some very high quality horns. There's nothing more overrated than "European craftsmanship." You can pay a lot for a fancy hand made Euro horn and still get crap build quality.

    • @bpkinatl
      @bpkinatl 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Eric from Cincinnati If you don't really have any information about what he does, then don't post gossipy crap. While Steve can certainly be more than a little abrasive at times his horns, and the science/craft that go into them, the quality of his horns are not up for speculation. The quality of what comes out of Steve's shop is first rate.

    Not a fan of Steve Goodson, and would never pay $15k for a saxophone. I don't know any other sax players that have $15k to shell out for a "Category 5". Also, I've never seen a widely, publicly known sax player even demo one of these horns. When Chris Potter/Ernie Watts/Dave Liebman/Joe Lovano/etc demos one of these horns and there's an unaltered clip on YT, then perhaps I'll revisit the topic of Mr. Goodson.

      (at episode 6, and I feel the same). The work is so rarefied that it's hard to be inspired to either attempt it yourself or dream of being able to afford it. They're museum pieces or rich man's toys. The series could inspire regular people to build or support mortal craftspeople.

      Simpthesavage have you even played a saxophone...?
      I'm going to say you have not .! I played an
      Alto saxophone ....I know how it works
      The notes of the music are coming from the read in the mouth piece you use your tongue on the read to make the notes sharper sounding that sound can be changed by the valves that you open and close.
      This is why you wet the read before playing by putting it on your tongue
