The pill does best taken before ovulation. That said, to a lesser degree it may still reduce the chance of fertilisation & implantation so I wouldn't totally give up on it if thats all you had. Do a test 2-3 weeks after, please. However, for birth control after ovulation that has a good chance, its the copper coil - can be inserted within 5 days after ovulation or sex.

Hi, yes it's possible to get pregnant after taking the pill on ovulation day. Why? Because on ovulation day, the best chance you have is - after having sex, you take the pill BEFORE the time of egg release. But, unless you are in a laboratory, we don't know if you ovulate at 4 am or 4 pm on ovulation day. The pill needs to be in your system MANY hours before the egg is released to work. If you take it AFTER egg release on ovulation day, it's less likely to work. Please watch the video again for my full explanation. Taking another pill the following day may not work because the egg has already been released. And the pill may not be so good at stopping fertilization and implantation. So is it worthwhile taking the pill at all? Yes, it's worth taking it if you do not have an option like the copper coil or Ella, which are more likely to work at that time.

No way to tell till you get your period/ do a pregnancy test. The pill is not considered very effective when taken after ovulation and any chances it works rely on a very small possibility of preventing fertilisation/implantation.

We mostly estimate 2 hours for your stomach to empty after eating - including taking medication. It's likely the pill got into your system before the alcohol - unless you drank so much alcohol you vomited. Alcohol isn't known to affect how effective the pill is.

You can take the MAP any time in your cycle. During the period, most women are outside their fertile window and very unlikely to be ovulating. But some women have a short period, and short menstrual cycle so yes, it is a good idea to take the pill after having sex during the period. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the woman after sex, so there may be a chance - though very small - of pregnancy in some women.

Hi, we can’t accurately predict the moment of ovulation (except in a laboratory), but yes, the pill has good chance of working if taken on the same day and a few hours before ovulation. Also remember, the pill may prevent fertilisation or implantation to some extent. As I explained in the video, the only way you can tell is with the pregnancy test so please remind her to do one especially if her period is delayed by 7 days or more.

Hi, it’s not something we can predict with any statistical accuracy given the fact that we don’t know the moment of egg release on that day and other factors that affect the pill or the user. There’s a chance the pill could work, but we don’t know to what degree. However, the most effective method is a Copper coil, it can be used within 5 days after Sex or after ovulation.

After 48 hrs from ovulation, the egg is most likely dead so a lower risk of pregnancy. However, apps are not 100% accurate, plus even women with normal cycles may ovulate at a slightly different time each month - what if you'd ovulated later than your app suggested? Backing up with plan B ( not so effective after ovulation), the coil or a regular method can help.
What if your period was supposed to start 3 days ago and you took a plan b a day before your menstrual was supposed to start but since you took the plan b, it delayed your period?

Can't predict the chance of pregnancy, sorry, but taking the pill as soon as possible after sex is best recommended for the pill to work. If it's on the day of ovulation, it's difficult to say at which time you ovulated and if you took the pill before it happened.
Vasty, this depends on whether or not you have a regular period pattern. You will have to look at the dates of your periods over the last few months to see if your periods arrive around the same time. If you are regular, ovulation usually arrives 12-14 days from the first date of the last period, and you can easily work out the date. But if your periods do not arrive around the same time each month, it's not so easy to identify ovulation date.

Hi doc. I track my ovulation week with the FLO app. The circled day usually means “highest chance for pregnancy” - I had unprotected the day after this day. Took the Plan B within an hour after the event. Tomorrow marks the last day I’d be on my ovulation phase. Do I still have a chance to be saved? Hello mam! Me and my girlfriend had contact the day she is supposed to ovulate. There's a chance that the pill may work, but taking it around ovulation may reduce its effectiveness. An option is the copper coil if you have any access to that. Otherwise, keep an eye on the next period and do a pregnancy test if it's more than 7 days late.

We can't calculate the chance of pregnancy, the pill should work if taken in good enough time. You should do a pregnancy test in 2/3 weeks after sex or if your period is late.
We can't tell how the pill will work in this instance. As I explain in the video, it may or may not. The recommendation is to take the pill before ovulation as it is most effective then. Do a pregnancy test 2/3 weeks after U/S.

i took a plan b right after unprotected sex, until i heard about ovulation and i was hands down the most stressed I’ve been this past month. but, started my period and no baby. the plan b did cause a cyst in my ovary, and i started my period a week early. plan b’s are not healthy for you, and the cyst in my ovary causes me so much pain. I’m sticking to protection from now on.
There are different options, including condoms, abstinence, coil, etc. Please do stick to what works best for you mentally and physically.

There's a chance it could work by slowing sperm down. On ovulation day, it is less likely to work than if taken at least two days before ovulation.

The pill does best taken before ovulation. That said, to a lesser degree it may still reduce the chance of fertilisation & implantation so I wouldn't totally give up on it if thats all you had.

However, for birth control after ovulation that has a good chance, its the copper coil - can be inserted within 5 days after ovulation or sex.
There's a small chance, but before ovulation usually best recommended.

Hi, yes it's possible to get pregnant after taking the pill on ovulation day.
Why? Because on ovulation day, the best chance you have is - after having sex, you take the pill BEFORE the time of egg release.
But, unless you are in a laboratory, we don't know if you ovulate at 4 am or 4 pm on ovulation day.
The pill needs to be in your system MANY hours before the egg is released to work.
If you take it AFTER egg release on ovulation day, it's less likely to work.
Please watch the video again for my full explanation.
Taking another pill the following day may not work because the egg has already been released.
And the pill may not be so good at stopping fertilization and implantation.
So is it worthwhile taking the pill at all?
Yes, it's worth taking it if you do not have an option like the copper coil or Ella, which are more likely to work at that time.

We mostly estimate 2 hours for your stomach to empty after eating - including taking medication.
It's likely the pill got into your system before the alcohol - unless you drank so much alcohol you vomited.
Alcohol isn't known to affect how effective the pill is.

You can take the MAP any time in your cycle. During the period, most women are outside their fertile window and very unlikely to be ovulating.
But some women have a short period, and short menstrual cycle so yes, it is a good idea to take the pill after having sex during the period.
Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the woman after sex, so there may be a chance - though very small - of pregnancy in some women.
I have missed my period but I have taken all my active pills in morning except the last pill I have taken late evening. We used pull out method correctly but he didn't urinate when we had sex second time after 20,30 minutes

Hi, we can’t accurately predict the moment of ovulation (except in a laboratory), but yes, the pill has good chance of working if taken on the same day and a few hours before ovulation.
Also remember, the pill may prevent fertilisation or implantation to some extent.
As I explained in the video, the only way you can tell is with the pregnancy test so please remind her to do one especially if her period is delayed by 7 days or more.

Hello Doctor, my partner and I had unprotected sex and realized she was ovulating. I ejaculated outside but she told me a little bit of semen was inside. We took the plan B pill an hour or less after we realized this. We are terrified and know we have to do a pregnancy test 2/3 weeks after that night. Obviously the pill isn’t guaranteed to work 100% but statistically on a rough guess what is our chances of getting pregnant and what more can we do?
Hi, it’s not something we can predict with any statistical accuracy given the fact that we don’t know the moment of egg release on that day and other factors that affect the pill or the user.
There’s a chance the pill could work, but we don’t know to what degree.
However, the most effective method is a Copper coil, it can be used within 5 days after Sex or after ovulation.

After 48 hrs from ovulation, the egg is most likely dead so a lower risk of pregnancy.
However, apps are not 100% accurate, plus even women with normal cycles may ovulate at a slightly different time each month - what if you'd ovulated later than your app suggested?
Backing up with plan B (
not so effective after ovulation), the coil or a regular method can help.

The emergency pill is typically effective when you take it as soon as possible after sex and before ovulation. It is not 100% effective.
What if your period was supposed to start 3 days ago and you took a plan b a day before your menstrual was supposed to start but since you took the plan b, it delayed your period?

Can't predict the chance of pregnancy, sorry, but taking the pill as soon as possible after sex is best recommended for the pill to work. If it's on the day of ovulation, it's difficult to say at which time you ovulated and if you took the pill before it happened.

Vasty, this depends on whether or not you have a regular period pattern.
You will have to look at the dates of your periods over the last few months to see if your periods arrive around the same time. If you are regular, ovulation usually arrives 12-14 days from the first date of the last period, and you can easily work out the date. But if your periods do not arrive around the same time each month, it's not so easy to identify ovulation date.

I track my ovulation week with the FLO app. The circled day usually means “highest chance for pregnancy” - I had unprotected the day after this day. Took the Plan B within an hour after the event. Tomorrow marks the last day I’d be on my ovulation phase. Do I still have a chance to be saved?
I also booked an appointment for an emergency IUD at Planned Parenthood hood on Monday (would be 3 days after the sex) to affirm it won’t happen lol. Just extremely stressed out.

Hi, do please follow the recommendations on using the emergency pill or discuss with a clinician who knows your full medical background.

@@bambam7550 I got my periods 5 days later. Morning after pills have different effects on different people also depending on when you have taken them. Periods come earlier or later than usual and they are either lighter or heavier.

I would prefer doing beta hcg blood test since its easily available in India and you get the results writhing few hours.. That is the most conclusive test.. If she gets periods till then then we are good.. You gave her the pill within 3 hrs so it's good. She must get the periods as expected

3 days after ovulation suggests the egg may not even be present, but the pill could still prevent fertilisation and implantation to a small degree.

Hello mam! Me and my girlfriend had contact the day she is supposed to ovulate. We were very careful and the moment I felt the semen, I pulled right away.(after I pulled, it did not shoot right away, rather we forced it because we were afraid of pre ejaculation, and after a while, the pre ejaculation showed up). 2 hours after, she had a vaginal discharge with a bit of blood. She took the combined pills and used yuzpe method the day after her ovulation (25 hours after the contact), will it still work? Any tips for us? Thanks in advance!
There's a chance that the pill may work, but taking it around ovulation may reduce its effectiveness.
An option is the copper coil if you have any access to that. Otherwise, keep an eye on the next period and do a pregnancy test if it's more than 7 days late.
Doc is it possible for pre ejaculation to show up twice in a row?? My thing is dry when I pulled out so we forced it to try to see the pre ejaculation, it only showed up afterwards.

We can't calculate the chance of pregnancy, the pill should work if taken in good enough time.
You should do a pregnancy test in 2/3 weeks after sex or if your period is late.

i don’t track my cycle. i don’t know when i ovulated/will be ovulating. a condom leaked today, and i took the morning after pill two hours later. my periods aren’t always consistent, and i can’t remember when the last one was.
That seems the reasonable step, though regular birth control may be something to consider in future.
