Yes, absolutely that chance exists (though studies indicate that _most times_ the sperm would have died by 5 days so that by the time ovulation comes round - no sperm present). And that's why the EC pill is *not 100% effective* - it can still fail in a small number of cases. That's why we ask users to do a pregnancy test if the period is delayed by 1 week or more - because we know it is NOT 100% effective. * However!!* Since it gives you a chance of preventing pregnancy, it is better to get that chance of protection from using the EC pill than doing nothing, don't you think? A better option to avoid unplanned pregnancy is to use the * regular protection* offered by the regular pills, injections or coils, patches etc. They are more effective in the long term. But in an 'emergency' situation, the EC pills (or coil) could make a big difference to the users. Cheers

Hi, glad the video helped. Regarding your q, the pill before sex is not recommended. The (EC) pill works to delay ovulation, preventing egg release till around 5 days after you took it. This is so that any sperm from sex you had AFTER taking the pill would have died, and your ovulation that was postponed will then happen. (Sperm usually survive ~ 5 days). So, when you take the pill after sex, you are allowing enough time for sperm to die before the postponed ovulation comes around. If you take the pill before sex, you reduce that 5-day window, meaning you ovulate earlier and could have sperm still alive by the time your postponed ovulation happens.

It will be much less effective, there’s no guarantee it will work. However it’s better to take it if you have no other option given that it could prevent implantation to a small degree
Hello Dr, thank you for explaining. I have a question however. My girlfriend and I had intercourse on the 8th of September (4 days before her period.) Ejaculation happened on the outer labia or outer part of the v****. Out of fear and uncertainty we took the pill about 30-45 minutes after the deed. She then got her period two days later than the expected date (the 14th instead of the 12th which is the day on which she gets it.) (6 days after taking the pill) she had a lighter flow (some spotting you could say) that later on turned into a heavier one . On the 7th day she got off her period. It has been a month now and she has not gotten her period on the 12 or today which is the 14th. Could the Emergency Contraception have messed with her cycle or could it be worse and be a result of pregnancy.. your answer would be much appreciated as I am nerve wrecked right now..
Hi, yes it will. It also thickens the mucus and makes the womb less ‘hospitable’ for any fertilised egg. But do remember it’s not 100% effective and you should do a pregnancy test 2-3 weeks after unprotected sex.
Hi Josephine, it (morning after pill) works best if you take it straight away after sex before ovulation. If you take it after ovulation, it's like locking the gate to the farm after the cows have already run away. To a small extent, if you chase after the cows you may catch them - but you can see that the better option is locking the gate before they run. This is how the pill works, there is a small possibility it could work after ovulation by preventing the fertilised egg from planting in the womb. So please keep an eye on your periods and do a pregnancy test if you are over 1 week late. Thanks
Yes, Postinor 2 will work before ovulation - though its best performance is likely taken 2-3 days before your ovulation day if you have sex then. I will *still recommend* taking it even if it's one day before unless you had more effective options like the Ella pill or the copper coil. Best Wishes

Hi doc, my periods ended on 16 january and i had unprotected sex that night. I took morning after pill on 17 january. I started bleeding on 28 january, about 8 or 9 days earlier than my expected period. Bleeding continued for 5 days and its color was initially red and then darkened as the days passed by. Hi Natasha, having sex outside your fertile window (after the period) reduces the chance of pregnancy. I think you are reasonably safe as you also took the pill within 24 hours - remember it is not 100% effective. We can't estimate when your next period will come exactly. We know the pill can affect your period, making it come earlier or even later (usually by around 7 days). It delays ovulation and is most effective when taken before ovulation happens. However, it *may* work by preventing fertilization (egg meeting sperm to make embryo); or implantation (embryo nesting into the womb to grow). So - if the pill is your only option at any point of your cycle, please use it. But after ovulation happens, the copper coil is the most effective (used 5 days after U/S).

Hi, you should take the emergency pill as soon as possible after sex regardless of the brand, they are most effective taken within the first 12-24 hours. While they can still be effective up to 72 hours after for some brands, the recommendation is to avoid waiting so long if possible. Thanks

I’m on birth control pill though and I take it everyday day at 8am always. But I took a take action pill on Nov 7th the next day after just because i still wanted to be safe. Then I spotted like brown discharge on November 16th and it was like that for 2 days. Then it stopped. So I was confused if that was my period or not. I took a test yesterday and today and negative again. So am I okay and just overthinking it? Hi, yes it does work during the fertility window in the days before ovulation. It also has an effect after ovulation to an extent - may be able to prevent sperm travel & implantation.
Hi, technically, no, because the egg survives 24 -48 hrs. However, you can't be sure when you ovulate from month to month - the apps are just an estimate. So please use birth control even if you think you're past ovulation.

It might be due to the pill or not, we can't tell without a pregnancy test. You can do one as early as 2/3 weeks after U/S.

Hello Doc, I had unprotected sex during on my ovulation day, I took a morning after pill the next day and had a copper iud inserted two days after the unprotected sex (which is a day after I took the pill) am i likely to get pregnant? will it delay my period? I am experiencing cramps and spotting, my period is due tomorrow according to my flo app, could it be my period on the way or effects of the copper iud?
The coil is the best protection, esp if you take it within 5 days of ovulation/sex. Seems your risk of pregnancy is low.

It will be much less effective, there’s no guarantee it will work. However it’s better to take it if you have no other option given that it could prevent implantation to a small degree

Hello Dr, thank you for explaining. I have a question however. My girlfriend and I had intercourse on the 8th of September (4 days before her period.) Ejaculation happened on the outer labia or outer part of the v****. Out of fear and uncertainty we took the pill about 30-45 minutes after the deed. She then got her period two days later than the expected date (the 14th instead of the 12th which is the day on which she gets it.) (6 days after taking the pill) she had a lighter flow (some spotting you could say) that later on turned into a heavier one . On the 7th day she got off her period. It has been a month now and she has not gotten her period on the 12 or today which is the 14th. Could the Emergency Contraception have messed with her cycle or could it be worse and be a result of pregnancy.. your answer would be much appreciated as I am nerve wrecked right now..

Hi, yes it will. It also thickens the mucus and makes the womb less ‘hospitable’ for any fertilised egg. But do remember it’s not 100% effective and you should do a pregnancy test 2-3 weeks after unprotected sex.

Hi Josephine, it (morning after pill) works best if you take it straight away after sex before ovulation. If you take it after ovulation, it's like locking the gate to the farm after the cows have already run away. To a small extent, if you chase after the cows you may catch them - but you can see that the better option is locking the gate before they run. This is how the pill works, there is a small possibility it could work after ovulation by preventing the fertilised egg from planting in the womb. So please keep an eye on your periods and do a pregnancy test if you are over 1 week late. Thanks

Yes, Postinor 2 will work before ovulation - though its best performance is likely taken 2-3 days before your ovulation day if you have sex then.
I will *still recommend* taking it even if it's one day before unless you had more effective options like the Ella pill or the copper coil.

Hi doc, my periods ended on 16 january and i had unprotected sex that night. I took morning after pill on 17 january. I started bleeding on 28 january, about 8 or 9 days earlier than my expected period. Bleeding continued for 5 days and its color was initially red and then darkened as the days passed by. So now i am confused as to wether this was my actual period and am i safe from pregnancy? Also when will i get next period?
Hi Natasha, having sex outside your fertile window (after the period) reduces the chance of pregnancy. I think you are reasonably safe as you also took the pill within 24 hours - remember it is not 100% effective.
We can't estimate when your next period will come exactly. We know the pill can affect your period, making it come earlier or even later (usually by around 7 days). The bleeding you had does seem like an early period given it lasted nearly a week, but it could also have been a pill side effect.
What this means really is that you should not panic, wait another week or so, do a pregnancy test to check - and simply be watchful for a period that may come mid or later in February if you don't use any more of the pill.

Hi Elvis, most pills recommend use within 72 hrs (eg plan b) or within 5 days (eg Ella).
Outside these recommendations,they are less likely to work.

It delays ovulation and is most effective when taken before ovulation happens.
However, it *may* work by preventing fertilization (egg meeting sperm to make embryo); or implantation (embryo nesting into the womb to grow).
So - if the pill is your only option at any point of your cycle, please use it. But after ovulation happens, the copper coil is the most effective (used 5 days after U/S).

It's possible if you'd ovulated before the 20th. The chances of that so soon after an abortion are low, but not impossible..

Hi, you should take the emergency pill as soon as possible after sex regardless of the brand, they are most effective taken within the first 12-24 hours. While they can still be effective up to 72 hours after for some brands, the recommendation is to avoid waiting so long if possible.

Taking the emergency pill means ovulation is delayed - usually by 5 days.
So if you take it in your cycle a few days before ovulation will usually happen Ellaone will move it forward and you will still ovulate a bit later on in that cycle.

I’m on birth control pill though and I take it everyday day at 8am always. But I took a take action pill on Nov 7th the next day after just because i still wanted to be safe. Then I spotted like brown discharge on November 16th and it was like that for 2 days. Then it stopped. So I was confused if that was my period or not. Usually my period since I’m on birth control it’s not bright red. I took a pregnancy test 6 days before my expected period November 29 today was supposed to come. And the results were negative. I took a test yesterday and today and negative again. So am I okay and just overthinking it? Hi, yes it does work during the fertility window in the days before ovulation. It also has an effect after ovulation to an extent - may be able to prevent sperm travel & implantation.

Hi, technically, no, because the egg survives 24 -48 hrs.
However, you can't be sure when you ovulate from month to month - the apps are just an estimate. So please use birth control even if you think you're past ovulation.
